“Brian, honey,” said his mother worriedly, “what happened to your sweater?”
Her hopes for her son’s first day of school had not included battle wounds.
“A girl,” said Brian, squirming a little as she removed the aforementioned sweater — sporting a large, ragged rip that had definitely not been there in the morning. “Called Pepper,” he added helpfully.
“A girl named Pepper? Tore your sweater?!”
“Gonna call her Pepper,” Brian clarified.
“Okay, but—”
“She’s my friend now,” he added cheerfully, to his mother’s total bafflement. “An’ Adam an’ Wen’ley.”
“...That’s great, honey.” She rubbed her eyes. The sweater would need mending.
