A long jump to be dead?

Summary:

Set during season two episode two of Star Wars the Bad Batch

Whatever happened to Captain Wilco after Vice Admiral Rampart shot him?
Did he really plummet to his death, simply because doing the right thing?
Or, was there perhaps, a saving grace present there, during his fall?

A fixit tale.

Part of The Bad Batch Scenes and Fixits series

Notes:

I know, I know, don't get attached to the clones!
But, I do and so I wrote this little fic to change the ending of TBB S2/E2.
Gotta love the clones and I don't like to see them dying. Imperial or not.
So, there.

Chapter 1: It’s a long way down

Chapter Text

‘The whole short life flashing in front of one’s eyes when death, is upon.’

“Sir, I will not falsify an official report.”

“I understand… I will.”

That last exchange between the Captain and his commanding officer echoed in Wilco’s head, as his body kept on falling ever downward. Towards the inevitable. His death.

The brief life as he had knew it to be. First serving for the Republic, then the Empire, playing the good solider. Never really doubting his orders, always complying to it all. All of it flashing there somewhere in the back of his mind.

It had not really bee much of it and certainly, not long, the brief time in service before the war ended and then Wilco having become part of the imperial regime. But nothing had really changed for him, not really. It was just different times, but the same old job.

Always, following the given orders.

That was, until now.

Now, Wilco had finally decided to disobey a direct order. Finally, having grown on a pair to put it harshly? Having finally acted on his own doubts, that the Empire wasn’t all that great?

Well, as it turned out, it was simply too little and and way too late.

Because he was going to die in a few short moments.

Regrets?

Sure, there were plenty.

Having seen how the Empire had taken over more and more worlds. All in the name of order and peace. But, the truth was something else completely. As Wilco had come to realise.

The missions he had been sent on for supposed peacekeeping… Well…

It was the exact opposite of all of that. All those local people rejecting the Empire shot on sight? Just because they were redeemed to have become the enemy of the Empire? Because they did not comply?

But the least of all, having seen so many of his brethren, his kin, treated like they were nothing. Unworthy. Expendables they had become, to be discarded like used toilet paper.

And now? This mission?

They were there hauling off the spoils of a war having devastated not just the planet, but its people no less. Most likely other planets as well. And now, the Empire was reaping the benefits of that?

Then only having ended up in a shootout with a renegade group of clones. Most likely wanting to steal some of it for themselves. Their cause perhaps? If the rumours were true. They had all heard them after all.

The infamous Clone Force 99 and then making the ultimate mistake.

Reporting it to Vice Admiral Rampart.

And so, here he was, flying across time and space itself.

Light as a feather even if his body felt heavy because of the shot raising havoc on the inside. Loosing all sense of self, as the cold grip of death was getting a hold of him.

Before Wilco’s body hit the ground, his final thought being that of:

“I wish, to have never told him about them.”

The thud of the body landing in a heap of broken bones and flesh the only thing heard in the deep crevice of the lush greenery of the devastated and abandoned planet.
