Chapter 1: Grian

Chapter Text

Grian took the plunge off the ledge, dying on impact.

He died

Correction: he should have died.

Grian gasped awake, clawing for air like someone would take it from him. He looked around, noticing that he was in a small RV. Grian pushed himself off the bed, and almost immediately fell to the floor.

As Grian pushed himself to his feet he noticed an unfamiliar weight on his back. He strained his head to look at his back, where all he could see was a colorful, feathery mass. The feathers fluffed up as he internally panicked. Anyone would be able to point him out from a distance with how vibrant the feathers on the wings were.

“Oh!” An unfamiliar voice gasped, Grian’s attention snapped towards the stranger who was wearing a Hawaiian shirt, and sported a mustache, “You’re awake!” The stranger seemed happy. Grian took a cautious step back, he didn’t have a weapon, and he couldn’t tell what life the stranger was on.

“Stay back!” Grian growled, his wings flaring open and getting caught on the walls of the RV.

“Oh pants. I’ll be right back,” the stranger said, walking out of the RV.

Grian took a deep breath, he couldn’t believe that worked! Grian didn’t want to stick around whenever they got back, so Grian booked it out of the RV. There was another building, that being an upside down ship. The builder in Grian wanted to inspect every detail of the build, but Grian didn’t have the time to stick around. He booked it into the distance.

“Grian?” A familiar voice asked, causing Grian to stop dead in his tracks.

“Scar…?” Grian asked, “but I killed you!”

“I got better, apparently,” Scar said, clearly forcing a smile.

Tears formed in the two’s eyes, and Grian pulled Scar closer, wrapping his new wings around his best friend and fellow science bro.

“Grian!?” Another voice called out, it was the stranger from before.

“He’s over here!” Another voice called out, this time new.

“Oh thank the gods,” The first stranger sighed.

Grian turned to the strangers, using his new wings to hide Scar from them, he just got Scar back, he wasn’t losing him again.

“Who are you and how do you know my name?” Grian spat, he didn’t trust these two strangers as far as he could throw them.

“So it’s like X said, none of you remember us,” the second stranger sighed, “My name is Pearl, and that's Mumbo, we were all friends before you and a few others vanished in the change of seasons.”

Mumbo and Pearl, those names had a ring of familiarity to it, but that meant nothing, Ren had seemed familiar, and everyone knew how that ended. With an arrow through Ren’s chest.

“Who’s X?” Scar asked, from behind Grian’s wing. Scar thankfully hadn’t mentioned them yet, but Grian knew the minute they were alone, there would be questions.

“X is Xisuma, Hermitcraft’s admin,” Mumbo explained, “he revived you and the others.”

“Why?” Grian asked, he didn’t know what an admin was, but if one had the power to revive people, he didn’t trust them.

“Because he’s your friend,” Pearl said, “we don’t know what happened to you guys, or why you’re all so hostile, but we hope we can make amends,” she added.

“Who’s to say we wanted to be revived?” Grian spat. He wasn’t sure how the others felt, but Grian didn’t want to live with the guilt of everyone he killed.

Mumbo took a deep shuddering breath, and without warning hugged Grian.  “I’m sorry it had to happen like this, I’m sorry you don’t trust or remember us, but we’ll figure out a way to make things right.” Mumbo said, and Grian knew it was a promise, and Grian wasn’t sure what to think.

A few days passed and Grian and Scar were inseparable, to an unhealthy degree according to someone named False, who they had also met. But Grian and Scar couldn’t put it off forever, they had to meet the mystery man himself, XisumaVoid.

When Xisuma entered the house that Grian and Scar had spent so long building, the duo were cautious. Unsure of how to react to someone who could apparently revive people who were on their final death. Xisuma hadn’t taken the duo’s silence well, but not badly either. Xisuma simply took a deep breath, taking off his helmet and explained his visit.

“You probably already know, but my name is Xisuma, I’m a friend, and I promise to do whatever I can to protect you two,” he started, before pulling out two small devices, “These are communicators, since both of your’s, along with the other’s are nowhere to be found. These will allow you to communicate with others no matter where you are, and will also alert you of certain… events. ” The admin was clearly dancing around the word death.

“Why are you just giving us devices as powerful as that?” Grian asked, “people don’t do that.”

Scar had remained uncharacteristically silent throughout the whole exchange. Normally Scar was the aggressor, but Grian had taken up that role recently. Maybe it was Grian trying to make up for killing Scar, or maybe it was a newfound confidence in Grian that came with his new wings (although Pearl and Mumbo insisted he always had them). Grian wasn’t sure himself, all he knew is that he had to protect Scar at all costs.

“Because we’re friends,” Xisuma said, resigned, “I know you may not remember it, but me, you, Scar, and the others have all been through a lot together, and have healed together. As an admin it's my duty to protect my players, and I’ve already failed at that once, I don’t intend on failing you two, or the others again.” Xisuma said before getting up and turning to leave, “and one last thing, if you guys need anything, anything at all, just message me.” And with that Xisuma left.

“I don’t trust him,” Grian declared.

“I think he’s nice,” Scar said.

Grian hummed, but didn’t reply, this wasn’t an argument he wanted to have now, that's a problem for future Grian to deal with.
