Work Text:

Wednesday Addams doesn't like hugs or other physical forms of affection. She has known this since she was a little girl. Wednesday Addams doesn't fit in with other people, they never truly like her. She has known this since she was a little girl. Wednesday Addams doesn't fall in love. She has known this since she was a little girl.

Everything changes with Enid. It's peculiar. Wednesday's heart starts to beat a little faster when she's near Enid, that's the very first sign that something has changed. Wednesday desperately wants Enid to like her, even though she pretends she doesn't. The thought of Enid hating her hurts. Wednesday has never concerned her with such issues before but now it's suddenly the most important thing.

The thought of touching Enid and hugging her… it should be terrible but it's not. Wednesday constantly wonders what Enid's hugs are like. Enid looks so soft and sweet and Wednesday wonders if her hugs are like that, too. She dreams about it sometimes. She actually likes those dreams. It's all terribly confusing.

Wednesday hugs Enid after fighting to protect the school, after Enid saved her. Enid's hugs are just as soft as Wednesday thought they would be. Even when they are both in a terrible state.

They sit down on the ground together. It's cold, even though the school still burns behind them. Around them people are doing everything they can to contain the chaos, to make things right and call people's guardians. Wednesday isn't focused on them, much of it is a blur. Enid is not a blur. Enid is right in front of her, perfectly visible. Perfect, in general.

"I like you," Wednesday whispers. "I would like to hug you again."

Enid smiles at her. She isn't beaming like she usually is, she's clearly as tired as Wednesday is and tonight was hard. Still, she smiles at Wednesday and hugs her and it fills Wednesday with unimaginable joy. This is better than murder and poison.

"Do you like like me?" Enid asks softly.

Before Wednesday would make fun of such phrases, now she can't.

"I do," she says.

She brushes a strand of hair away from Enid's face.

"You are beautiful and amazing and so brave," she tells Enid. "I would like to romance you."

Enid gently presses her lips against Wednesday's.

"I would like to be romanced by you," Enid says.

"My family has a tendency to go all out when it comes to these things," Wednesday warns her.

"I can take it," Enid says, the hint of a grin on her face. "We handled all of this, didn't we? I can handle you, Wednesday Addams. I want you."

Wednesday nods. She waits for a few seconds and then gently kisses Enid again. Next, she suggests another hug.

Wednesday had never been one for hugging until she met Enid but it feels right. Especially tonight. To herself Wednesday can admit that she actually needs Enid's hugs. They make her feel safe and they make the adrenaline leave her body.

Everyone else is still rushing around. There's panic and stress. Wednesday doesn't feel any of it. As long as she's focused on Enid, everything is alright. Eventually they are allowed to go to their dorms and Enid holds Wednesday's hand as they walk there. At some point they do give a statement about what happened but Wednesday barely remembers what she says. Enid's hand is so warm. It's all Wednesday can think about, all that she wants to think about.

They lie down on Enid's bed together and cuddle. They fall asleep that way. Enid's warmth is so comforting.

Wednesday knows she will never be the same. She's not the girl she was before she met Enid. She's surprisingly okay with this. Because it's Enid and Enid is wonderful and Wednesday wants to romance her forever.

She dreams she dances with Enid on their wedding day. Enid is dressed in a rainbow dress and Wednesday is dressed in black. It's a wonderful dream. Wednesday wouldn't mind if it came true one day. She is turning into her parents and she actually doesn't hate it. When you meet the right person, romance isn't such a gross thing. It's just nice.

Wednesday is still holding Enid when she wakes up. Enid is beautiful. Wednesday knows they'll have to say goodbye today, at least for the rest of the semester. She doesn't really want to. She doesn't like the idea of there being distance between them.

"We can keep in touch," Enid says. "I will write letters, if that's what you want."

Wednesday nods. "I could be convinced to use technology for you, if that's what you want."

Enid rewards her with another hug.

Later that day when their parents arrive and it's time to leave Nevermore for the time being, they have a proper goodbye. Hugs included, of course. Wednesday catches her parents looking at her from the corner of her eye. They look so proud.

"Not a word," she tells them.

Then she looks at Enid again and tells her how much she will miss her in the most Wednesday way possible. She knows Enid gets her.

"I will see you soon Wednesday Addams," Enid says. "And we will stay in touch, I promise."

They share one last hug before they really have to go. It feels like a promise of more.

Wednesday likes it. She can hold onto this feeling until they see each other once more.
