Work Text:

The full moon glistens in the distance. Enid has not shifted again since that night in the forest, she has not reconnected with her wolf. Her parents are going to be disappointed, she knows. She wonders if Wednesday is going to be disappointed, too. Enid was only able to rescue Wednesday because she wolfed out. Now she can't. She can't protect Wednesday when the next awful thing happens. Enid hates that.

"Is there any particular reason you are hiding out in the forest?" Wednesday says, suddenly appearing behind Enid.

"I thought I might wolf out," Enid admits.

"And then you didn't," Wednesday says.

"Then I didn't," Enid says.

Wednesday sits down besides Enid and reaches out, linking their pinkies together.

"Don't fret," Wednesday says. "I know you do but it's not needed. You are perfect the way you are."

"Thank you," Enid replies. "I worried you might be disappointed…"

"I can't be, not when it comes to you," Wednesday confesses.

Enid smiles at her. "Thank you," she says again.

She doesn't need to wolf out. She has Wednesday and Wednesday accepts her for who she is. Wednesday doesn't want her to be anything else, not like her parents do. It's good. It feels safe.

"Do you want to keep looking at the moon together?" Wednesday asks.

Enid nods. It's nice. Kinda romantic, actually. Now that's a thought. Romancing Wednesday. Enid thinks she wants that more than wolfing out.

"I really like you," Enid says.

Wednesday blushes, Enid can just about see it in the moonlight.

"I like you, too," Wednesday says.

She properly links their hands together. They are warm and soft. Enid is happy. As long as she has this, life is good. No one can take away this joy from her, this love. She won't let them. Ever.
