“Sometimes it feels like we’ve been doing this forever.”
“This?” Josh asks.
Donna lifts her hand from its place on his bare chest to gesture in the space between them. “This. Us.” When he doesn’t immediately respond, she adds, “You know what I mean.”
“Yeah.” She can hear the smile in his voice. “I do.”
They’ve always had an uncanny ability to know what the other is thinking, to fill in the end of one another’s unfinished sentences, and it’s only grown stronger in the three months since their romantic relationship began.
“In a way we have been doing this forever,” he muses after a moment. “We’ve always been us, just without the…”
“Sex?” she supplies, feels laughter rumble through his chest.
“I was gonna say explicit acknowledgement of feelings. But the sex is good too.”
“Just good?”
“Great,” he amends. “Incredible. Earth-shattering, even.”
“Bet your ass.”
Teasing aside, she knows he’s right; they’ve been Josh-and-Donna since that first day in the Manchester office. Their relationship may have evolved over the years, but the heart of it is still the same.
Like now when, using that same unspoken language, they agree there’s a better way to continue this conversation than with words. Just as Donna tilts her head up, Josh tilts his down, their lips meeting in the middle. She lets him roll them over and press her down into the mattress as his mouth moves against hers and she thinks she’d like to keep doing this forever.
