A Witch Goes Green

Summary:

Someone’s got a new job. It’s supposed to be a secret.
Pity it’s not much of a secret to her friends.

“But her hair? I mean, that mask can’t possibly fool anyone. With all that hair?”

Work Text:

It's something of a regular thing, where the group of childhood friends and enemies gather together at one of their homes to watch Quidditch. Nothing like surviving a war then sharing dorms for a year to bring them together, no matter who they were before. The new Wizarding Window displays make home viewing possible; attending a match in person as a group had drawn so much attention that they had to Apparate away before it even started.

Playful banter, cries at bad plays, and yells at missed shots all end when the match abruptly switches to a special broadcast showing three people. Everyone boos and then wonders how this is appearing on a Wizarding channel. Then they see who is on the display, which answers that question, and then they get silent.

The two figures speaking on the screen are recognisable to... well, everyone on the planet really, even those in Wizarding Britain. The third person, they say, has recently been inducted into their ranks. Evidently this announcement is to let everyone know, so governments and other agencies will recognise her as part of the League.

She is, however, already quite recognisable to these people. They’ve known her for years. Everyone shouts, whispers, or laughs out the same name when the image zooms in on her. There is a pause, and then much discussion as glasses are refilled and quickly emptied.

“Always the swotty showoff. Couldn’t she have at least waited until the match was over?”

“Merlin’s Beard. So that’s what she’s really been up to.”

“Months she was gone. Months! ‘Special training for a new job and all’ my arse.”

“Technically correct, as she does appear to have a new job.”

“Someone owes me some galleons. She’s certainly hasn’t become an Unspeakable.”

“I did tell you she had joined the order of the blue guards and learned their daily rhyming ritual.”

“You also said the nargles had stolen all her clothes, dear.”

“Don’t joke, she could be right. Those clearly aren’t dress robes she’s wearing.”

“Yes, thank you sister mine! Is that some sort of Muggle exercise leotard? It’s quite… inappropriate… for public display.”

“Hot though. She’s seriously fit.”

“The bloke with the cape next to her can juggle pyramids and that’s a real-life Amazon at her other side. I suspect there are high physical standards for that lot.”

“Explains why she left her wand behind.”

“I’d say she traded up for that ring.”

“But her hair? I mean, that mask can’t possibly fool anyone. With all that hair?”

“I for one approve the new style. Green looks good on her.”

“Second. The glow makes it even better.”

“Well, she is the brightest witch of her age, remember?”

Notes:

Thank you so much for reading! I hope you enjoyed it.

This came into being while working on another story (“Whatever Happened to the Brightest Witch of Her Age?” coming to an internet near you). The combination of the common phrase about her along with a famous superhero oath seemed too good not to use together. I imagine others have already done so, and so apologies if I’ve stepped on toes.

Each character was assigned their own bit of dialogue. See if you can guess who says what.

And there's now a sequel!
First Interrogation

Look for a much longer, multi-chapter story called The Adventures of… coming next for this series, with segments in the life of the new Green Lantern of Sector 2814. Secret Origin and more. And a follow-up to that is already in work.
