Asami studied her reflection in the mirror appraisingly. A touch more lipstick, and she'd probably hit the balance between casual and celebratory. This was just a college party, after all, not exactly a formal event. She reached for the gold-capped tube, and caught Korra's eye in the mirror.
Her girlfriend was watching her with a dreamy look in her eyes that made Asami want to laugh and also catch her breath because it was still pretty wild to her that Korra was looking at her like that. (Side effect of pining after her best friend for four years before either of them said anything, she guessed.)
“Everything okay?” she asked, carefully applying another coat of dark red.
Korra blinked at her like she'd forgotten how to speak, then managed a faint, “Yeah. I'm good.”
Asami shot her a smile, capped the lipstick tube and set it back down, turning away from the reflection to face her girlfriend. “What do you think?” She spun in a circle, letting Korra appraise her outfit.
“I think you're the most beautiful person I've ever seen in my life,” Korra said softly, her cheeks flushing like she still wasn't used to saying that sort of thing aloud.
Asami felt herself blushing, too, and traced her eyes over Korra's outfit in return. Her girlfriend had opted for jeans and a tight blue tank top that showed off her muscles to perfection. Asami felt her mouth go dry, but managed a “Says you.”
Korra smiled shyly at her, reaching for her hand and interlocking their fingers. “I'm pretty sure you're actually a goddess, Asami Sato.”
Asami shook her head and grinned, leaning in to kiss her, freshly-done makeup be damned. Korra tilted her face up to kiss her back properly, one hand winding in Asami's hair, and Asami drew her in closer, tracing a hand slowly up her arm (because... did she mention Korra has muscles?). She deepened the kiss, and Korra made a soft sound into her mouth, and literally who cared about the freaking party?
“Korra! Asami!”
They had all of one second to register the voice and break apart before their very dear and very unwelcome friend Bolin burst into the room without even knocking.
Korra visibly caught her breath, and Asami looked away from her awkwardly and ran panicked fingers through her hair, sure it was a total wreck, but luckily their very dear, very unwelcome friend was also very oblivious, and he merely looked between them in confusion.
“Guys, are you nearly ready–” he began, then broke off, studying Korra closely. Asami looked across at her as well, and oh. Oh, shit. She'd forgotten about the whole, you know, freshly-applied lipstick plus kissing equals... well, this. Korra's lips were smeared with dark red, and it looked a little like when Asami was four and got into her mother's make-up kit, because a kiss is not exactly the optimum way to apply a cosmetic product.
If they were alone, Asami might laugh. Then she'd probably want to back Korra up against the wall and kiss her some more, because there was something about her like this, kiss-tousled and lipstick-smudged, that was way, way hotter than it probably should have been.
But they weren't alone. And Bolin didn't know they were together. No one did, yet, except Korra's pseudo aunt, Kya, who guessed months before they even actually confessed.
And now, now they were totally busted and she didn't want it to come out like this and– “Korra, did you borrow Asami's lipstick?”
Wait. What?
Korra echoed her confusion somewhat more visibly, her eyes widening, one hand flying to her mouth. Her voice was maybe two octaves higher when she asked, “What?”, but even that didn't seem to tip Bolin off.
“You guys seem to be... matching,” he said, blithely oblivious. “Not that I'm not all for you trying a new look, but, uh... no offence, you might want to try using a... mirror?”
Oh god. Asami couldn't help but let out a barely stifled laugh. Were they seriously going to get away with this? Like, honestly? Bless Bolin and his obliviousness, but also, what the fuck?
“Oh. Yes,” Korra said after several beats, her eyes still wide with the kind of horrified confusion that would be better suited to having seen a vengeful ghost. “We're... matching! It's a... BFF thing!”
Asami bit her lip in an effort to keep a straight face. She didn't think she'd ever heard Korra say the word 'BFF' in her life.
“Cool!” Bolin said, still with apparently absolutely no idea what was actually going on. “Maybe you should check in the mirror, though. Right now, you kind of look like you just made out with someone.”
Korra laughed, very high and very strained. “Haha. What? Making out? Pfft, no, with who? I'll fix it!”
She went to stand in front of the mirror, staring at herself in abject horror, and Asami joined her there and touched up her own make-up and waited for Bolin to figure it out. There was no way. There was no way he could have brought up 'making out' and still not know.
Apparently, he could. What in the heteronormativity–
“Guys! Are you ready yet?”
Opal, another very dear and very unwelcome friend, burst through the door, stopping dead when she seemed to figure out that she'd interrupted something or other. “...What's going on?”
“Korra and Asami are wearing matching lipstick now!” Bolin told her enthusiastically.
Opal raised an eyebrow slowly, and looked from Korra, who still hadn't fixed her face and was now eyeing a tube of lipstick like it might actually bite her, to Asami, who had put the finishing touches to her own make-up but probably still looked startled. Her eyes seemed to take in every detail, from the blushes on both their cheeks to the way Asami's hair was still rumpled, and then she nodded, slowly, surely, a smug grin spreading across her face.
“Matching, huh?” she said, a gleefully knowing look in her eye. “I see.”
Asami shot her a glare, daring her to say anything, and Opal smiled back at her, shaking her head minutely. “Bolin, give us a sec, would you? I want to ask these two for... make-up advice.”
“Sure! See you in a minute!” He shot all of them a smile and stepped out of the room.
“So...” Opal began, her eyes tracking slowly between the two of them.
Asami sighed internally. They were totally busted.
Their very dear and very not oblivious friend grinned at them, enthusiasm written all over her face. “Tell. Me. Everything.”
