Work Text:

Luz woke up covered in sweat and with a pounding headache. She breathed in and immediately realized that she definitely needed to blow her nose.

This was not good. She was sick.

“Guys,” she said, trying to wake up Amity, Willow, and Vee. When all she heard was the sound of one of them turning in bed, she said louder, “Guys!”

Finally, Amity stirred. She got up and looked at Luz through bleary eyes. “Luz, are you okay?”

“Get my mom,” Luz whispered, her voice hoarse. “I think I’m sick.”

Worry sparked in Amity’s gaze, and she nodded and left the room. Luz sighed and let herself relax in her bed. Being sick was not a pleasant experience, but she would have to deal with it.

Camila came in soon, Amity following her. Luz’s mother knelt down at her side and pressed a hand to her forehead. “Your temperature is high,” she murmured gently. “We should move you to my room. I’ll have the couch.”

“Thank you,” Luz whispered as Camila helped her get up from the bed. Amity got on her other side, and together, the two of them supported Luz to Camila’s bedroom.

As Camila left to get cold medicine, Amity asked, “Is there anything I can do for you? Do you want your palisman?”

Luz coughed and said weakly, “No, I don’t want to risk getting it sick too. Take good care of it for me, though.”

Amity smiled, but Luz could tell she was straining to keep it on. “I will.”

Camila came in with the medicine and glanced at Amity. “You should probably keep a distance,” she suggested, pouring a small cup for Luz. “You shouldn’t catch it too.”

Amity gave her a nervous look. “But Luz…”

“Will be fine,” Camila reassured.

Amity nodded stiffly. She looked at her girlfriend and said, “I’ll come back later,” then hesitantly, she left.

Luz drank the cold medicine, and Camila took her temperature. It was higher than Luz expected. Closing her eyes, she tried to fall asleep, but she believed that it took longer than normal.

When Luz woke up, Amity had returned, and she had brought Hunter with her.

Luz smiled weakly. Amity and Hunter were her significant others, and she was glad to have them with her, but… “You do know the sickness is infectious, right?”

Hunter nodded. He had clearly been filled in on everything. “Yeah, I know.”

“And you’re still here…?”

“We love you, Luz,” Amity said, and Luz felt her heart rate speed up at those words. Or maybe it was because of the sickness. “We wanted to make sure you’re alright.”

“I’m glad you’re here,” Luz admitted. “I’m just worried about what could happen if you get sick too.”

“We could wear those facemasks,” Hunter suggested.

“The facemasks are better at keeping the illness from infecting anyone else than keeping you from getting sick,” Luz said, but Hunter and Amity were giving her a determined look, so she sighed. “Alright, but only if my mom says it’s fine. I don’t want to risk…”

“We’ll be fine,” Amity reassured, and Luz nodded. She hoped her girlfriend was right.

“Willow and Gus are outside, standing guard,” Hunter told Luz, sounding a bit confused. “I’m not sure what exactly they’re guarding against, but…”

Luz sighed, then coughed. “They did this last time, too. When I was sick in the Owl House.”

Hunter looked a bit alarmed. “You were sick before?”

“Eclipse Lake,” Amity supplied, and Hunter breathed out a soft sound of acknowledgement.

“They don’t need to stand guard,” Luz said. “Or, well… did they even stand outside last time? Didn’t they just basically turn the Owl House into a fort?”

Amity shrugged. “I don’t remember too well. Most of my memories of that day are about you and Eclipse Lake.”

“Most of my memories are of being restrained with abomination goo,” Hunter muttered, and Amity shot him a superior look. Luz knew she had to get the full story later.

Luz burst into another coughing fit, and Amity and Hunter shot each other a worried look. Luz’s girlfriend got up. “I’ll go make… that soup your mom told me about,” Amity said, and then she was out of the room.

“She doesn’t know how to make it though,” Luz muttered, but felt a swell of affection in her chest anyway.

“She’s trying,” Hunter said, smiling lightly, and Luz knew he was right. They both were trying.

Even after eating Amity’s soup (which tasted surprisingly good, for Amity’s first time making it), Luz felt horrible. “I’m going to sleep,” she announced to her partners.

“Will you wake up?” Hunter spoke as if this was a genuine concern. Most likely, Luz just had the common cold. (Yes, people could die from common cold, but Luz hadn’t yet, so she thought she’d be alright.)

“I will, I promise,” Luz said with a smile, then settled into bed and closed her eyes, allowing herself to drift off into sleep with Amity and Hunter’s worried murmurs nearby.

The next day, Luz found that she felt better. Maybe not perfect yet, but much better than before.

She told as much to Amity and Hunter when they entered, and her heart warmed when she saw them smile.

“We were so worried,” Amity murmured, stepping closer to Luz.

“I wouldn’t get too close yet,” Luz suggested with a small cough for emphasis. “I’m still a little sick.”

“But you’re better.” Hunter’s smile was as bright as the sun. “You- you’re better.”

“I am,” Luz grinned.

Camila came in as well, and Willow and Gus, and Vee, all glad that she was now alright. And even after they all left, Luz’s significant others remained.

“Thanks for staying with me,” Luz said. “I hope you guys don’t get sick.”

“Would human sicknesses affect us differently than they did for humans?” Hunter asked.

Luz shrugged. “Witch sicknesses didn’t affect me too differently, so the reverse should be the same.”

“Don’t get careless though, I guess,” Hunter said with a sigh. “Carelessness leads to injuries.”

Luz and Amity both gave him a worried look at that until the latter turned her gaze back to the former. “Rest well,” she said.

Luz grinned. “I will.”

And she would.
