Work Text:
Chuuya had a feeling that it was some special occasion today.
Nothing of the sort that appeared to be of patriotic importance, but just one of the celebrations that the regular civilians seemed to enjoy to indulge in. There were many reasons that had led to the mafia executive having such suspicions.
Firstly, the trains and roads were overcrowded today. More so, than usual. Now, Chuuya almost never used public transport; considering he had a perfectly good, pink bike of his own which was perfectly capable of transporting him to work and back. But while driving through the streets on said bike, he couldn't help but notice the immense flux of crowds.
Moreover, every other confectionery shop on the streets were overflowing with people. There were promotional posters stuck to every door, bus stop, lamp post and so on. Not even the occasional tree along the sidewalk was spared from being used as a bulletin board. Besides that, one of the employees at all these stores were assigned to 'standing-outside-and-yelling-for-customers' duty.
Chuuya has lost count of exactly how many times he's heard the screeching, all too cheerful, "Chocolates on discount! Confectionaries for sale! Get yours today at the low cost of...!" He's lost count already, and really the commute to his workplace from home was merely of fifteen minutes. Strangely enough, none of these people yelled out exactly why there were such delightful sounding discounts.
Other than all these noticeable things on the roads, there was so much more to pay attention to in his workplace itself. That, obviously being the Port Mafia building. The newer recruits were complaining about the trains being too crowded, and how it was yet another year being all alone today with no surprises to be expected.
The older members were a little more tired, apparently completely used to all this bullshit over the years. They were just glad that there seemed to be fewer missions today, and that they had more time off. Something about the boss being busy with Elise-chan today? Chuuya wasn't really sure what that was about. Not yet, at least.
Besides, some people actually walked in carrying flowers and chocolates, which naturally attracted the envy of their colleagues and such. If all of that wasn't enough, the biggest give away was the way that Higuchi was acting.
She's been nervously flittering in her seat all morning, running her fingers through her hair all too often, and checking the mirror to ensure her appearance was perfectly way too frequently than normal. It was around post-lunch in the afternoon, that all of it made sense when she finally greeted Akutagawa with a small bag of homemade cookies.
As if to cover up her efforts for her superior, her other friends and colleagues- Tachihara, Gin and old man Hirotsu- got a bag of cookies each as well. All of this had successfully taken place right after a meeting had finished. Basically, it was a meeting that Chuuya had had to conduct with Black Lizard, along with Higuchi and Akutagawa. The other executive, Kouyou had dropped by as well, but it had been rather brief as she dropped off some documents before stepping away.
Since everyone was getting cookies from the blonde mafioso, she dropped by Chuuya's seat as well. Well, for some reason, didn't she appear way too nervous as compared to her state of mind when she approached the others?
Higuchi held out a cute little pink bag of cookies in both of her palms, bowing down gently, "Um, Chuuya-san. I made cookies yesterday so, if you want... I mean! If you would be kind enough to accept them... Um, that would-"
Chuuya chuckled as he picked up the bag easily, "Thank you, Higuchi-kun."
Taking the liberty to taste a cookie then and there, he hummed appreciatively, "They're really good! I didn't know you could bake."
Obviously relieved now, Higuchi explained with her hands waving about, "My sister used to work at a bakery before; she helped me out."
Behind her, Tachihara tried some out as well, "Whoa, they're good. It actually makes more sense if Nee-san didn't bake them herself."
Higuchi whipped around to face him indignantly, "Hey! What is that supposed to mean!"
Gin chuckled as well, trying to convince her brother to give the cookies a chance. It was amidst all this chaos that Chuuya finally asked the question that has been plaguing him all morning.
Looking up at the others, he sighed, "Alright, I'll ask it. What the fuck is today? Am I missing something? Is it some kind of occasion?"
Tachihara peered at him from behind the blonde, "Eh? Chuuya-san, you don't know?"
Coming to his superior's defense, Akutagawa spoke up, "I don't either. What is it today then?"
Higuchi blushed bright red before answering, "It's White Day today!"
Chuuya turned around to look at his calendar, "Oh? It's 14 March already? Ah, I see. It's White Day then."
Tachihara commented, "I can't believe you actually know what that is."
The mafia executive waved his hand to brush it off, "I have my methods. Certain people I know are usually very aware of such stupid days."
Unknown to the others in the room, that clearly clicked something within Higuchi. She turned to look at her executive with curious eyes, "Oh, that's right! Don't you have plans today then, Chuuya-san? Maybe you'll be receiving chocolates?"
He sighed in response, "Ah that. Believe it or not, I haven't even heard anything about today being White Day. That guy has probably forgotten all about it, honestly. Not that I mind; it was such a pain last year."
Gin and Akutagawa were just staring at him in blatant confusion, but Tachihara took it upon himself to ask the important questions, "Hm? Do you have someone to celebrate White Day with, Chuuya-san?"
Gin asked, "Who's that guy you speak of?"
Chuuya stilled for a brief second. Clearly, he'd forgotten that the others weren't exactly aware of his home situation. He shook his head, "Oh that..."
Before he could continue however, the group collectively heard footsteps paving their way towards the meeting room. Falling right into their expectations, the main door to the room opened a mere few seconds later, revealing their other redhead executive with a guest in tow.
The preceding laughter that accompanied the footsteps up to the point when the door was opened gave away absolutely misleading clues about who this distinguished guest could be.
Standing behind Kouyou, stood none other than the infamous traitor of the Port Mafia.
Considering that the Port Mafia now had a truce with the Detective Agency, and the Boss seemed to be on fair terms with the former Demon Prodigy; there was no reason for anyone to be alarmed. Nonetheless, such an incident inspired curiosity. Especially since Dazai seemed to be engaged in perfectly amiable conversation with the executive.
Higuchi waved at him with no reservations, "Oh, Dazai-san! Long time no see. Have you been alright?"
Dazai went ahead to grasp the blonde's hands within his, "Ah, Higuchi-kun! I'm doing great, thank you for asking! Say, have you considered my proposal of committing a double suicide together?"
Naturally, this warranted him getting smacked away from the woman by his rival. Chuuya shot him a glare before turning to the other executive, "Ane-san. Why is this asshole here and exactly why are you entertaining him?"
Kouyou twirled around the apparently new umbrella in her hand, "There's no need to be so worked up, lad. It's a good day today, after all. Dazai is just dropping by for a bit. We've had tea, but he insisted on saying hello to the others before leaving."
Chuuya's eyes focused on the umbrella, before he turned to hiss at his rival, "You little-! I can't believe you bribed Ane-san with gifts!"
Dazai scoffed at him, "Ane-san was more than happy to indulge me in tea and cakes."
Chuuya huffed at the redhead woman, "I hope you know you're spoiling him! And for no reason too!"
Kouyou chuckled behind her hand, "I wouldn't say it's for no reason. Kyouka is in his care now, after all."
Dazai nodded sagely, "And she's doing wonderfully."
His rival scoffed, "No thanks to you, I'm sure. If anything, Yosano-kun and Kunikida-kun should be the ones who should be thanked. And that weretiger, of course."
The infamous traitor complained, "Wha-! Chuuya, that's mean! How could you! I'll have you know I'm a perfectly good mentor who's been taking very good of the kids."
Chuuya rolled his eyes, "I'm sure Akutagawa and Gin would disagree strongly."
While Akutagawa spluttered in his stead, his sister laughed before making her point, "Don't drag us into your spat, please."
Her superior ignored her successfully as he continued, "Anyways. Oi shitty Dazai, why are you really here?"
Dazai sighed exaggeratedly, as if it bothered him so much to have to answer such silly questions. Soon after, he procured gift wrapped boxes from somewhere, "I'm just here to drop off White Day chocolates, of course."
That was all that was said before he went around personally handing it out the boxes to every single person in the room- the Black Lizard members, and Akutagawa. Even Kouyou got a sparkly box, despite having been already gifted before. Naturally, the only one left out of this whole ordeal was Chuuya, who remained empty handed even after the end of the whole show.
He gritted his teeth when he realized the situation, "Of course you're here just to be an annoyance to me. It's almost as if you have no other purpose in life."
Dazai beamed at him, snapping his fingers together, "You're absolutely correct!"
Between all of this, the other executive decided that she'd had enough, choosing to step away from the 'youngsters' now. She was nice enough to say her goodbyes, and reprimand Chuuya, warning him to play nice, before taking her leave. Of course, Dazai got an equally stern warning. Clearly, she was too used to mediating between the two halves of Double Black for all these years.
Once she was gone, Higuchi meekly spoke up to the detective, "Um, thank you for the chocolates, but... Shouldn't you be giving something to Chuuya-san? You know, because-"
Chuuya huffed in annoyance, "I already told you, Higuchi-kun. This guy probably forgot all about it. And now that he clearly remembers it's White Day, he's being this annoying on purpose."
Dazai teased, "Eh? Is Chuuya saying he wants chocolates too?"
His partner scowled at him, "Okay one, who the fuck wouldn't want chocolates. Two, you know best that I deserve chocolates today, damn it."
As those two continued to bicker, outside of their own little world, Gin nudged Higuchi, "So, 'that guy' Chuuya-san spoke of. It's Dazai-san?"
Tachihara blinked, "Oh yeah. Why does it sound like Chuuya-san is expecting White Day celebrations from his old partner?"
Higuchi spared the couple one last resigned look before explaining to her peers, "About that. I found out last year that those two are actually married."
The silence that descended clearly did not affect the married couple in question. But they were snapped out of their own little world by a confused yelp from Tachihara, "You two are married?!"
Behind him, Akutagawa hissed softly, "Is it necessary to cause a scene?"
Gin stared at them as well, "I had a feeling there was something there, but to think you guys got married? Without telling us?!"
Her eyes turned accusing as she faced the traitor, "Just how long have you known us now, Dazai-san? To think we weren't even invited to your wedding?"
Experiencing accusatory glances from certain two people, Higuchi nervously sighed in explanation, "I didn't think it was a secret..."
Chuuya was quick to reassure her, "It's not, don't worry. This is just, ah, sudden."
Meanwhile, Dazai was on his way to reassure the two kids he'd taken in tot he Mafia himself, "Now, now, Gin-chan! Naturally, if we got married under natural circumstances, I assure you that you would be my maid of honor. And there's no way Chuuya would leave out Akutagawa-kun. But the situation was really complicated and-"
Gin spoke flatly, "Excuses, excuses."
Next to her, Tachihara stared at everyone blankly, "Are none of you going to question this?"
As expected, he went ignored as Chuuya went ahead to explain the circumstances, "We got married when this loser defected from the Mafia. The circumstances were dire."
Gin softened at that immediately. She nodded at her two well-known superiors, "Well then. Congratulations are in order, I suppose? And Happy White Day to you two."
Double Black lost all their edge on being congratulated like that. Somehow, they were standing closer together, their arms touching. Dazai tugged on his partner's sleeve gently as he thanked the girl in front of them, "...Thank You."
Clearly over such a sentimental situation, Chuuya changed topics soon after. He accusingly glared at is rival, "Speaking of White Day, where are my chocolates, damn it!"
Dazai lied a little too easily, grinning the entire time, "The shop was out of chocolates."
Chuuya yanked his arm away from the other's, "Oh fuck you. I'm leaving and I'll be buying a boat load of chocolates for myself."
That was all that was said as the gravity manipulator actually flew off, out of the door and through the corridors of the Mafia building. Dazai laughed out loud at the situation and bid his goodbyes to everyone else before following him out.
They ran into each other again a little away from the Port Mafia headquarters.
Chuuya had found a bench to perch upon, and he glared at his partner venomously as soon as he was approached. Completely expected, of course.
Dazai pushed the hat off the other's head before resting his hand atop red curls, "Ne Chuuya. Let's go get lunch again this year."
Chuuya looked up at him with narrowed eyes, "Are you paying?"
Dazai confirmed, "Yes. With my card."
Chuuya huffed, "Fine then."
Dazai just chuckled to himself as he leaned forward to kiss the top of his partner's head, "You're so fun to annoy."
Chuuya spoke dryly, "I'm sure it's a delight."
Another laugh, "Indeed so."
For a while, neither of them spoke a word. Then, Dazai reached his hand into his pocket, retrieving something before he dropped it into the other's hands.
Chuuya regarded the sparkly, red package with suspicious eyes before asking the question, "What's this?"
Dazai merely shrugged, before changing tones, "Happy White Day, Slug."
Unwrapping the present only to reveal wrapped gourmet chocolates, Chuuya rolled his eyes a little too excessively before decisively speaking aloud,
"Oh fuck off, Mackerel."
