Work Text:

Luz jumps, sitting bolt upright in her and Amity’s bed. Her hands tremble and she feels her breath pick up in pace, growing shaky and strained. She tries to calm herself down, to slow down her racing mind, and get back to sleep, but she can’t quell this. Her brain is already starting to slip, scaring her even more. A sob hitches in her throat, and she tries to catch it–she’s a big girl. She’s been big all day, she’s gotten so much done, not to mention she has a lot to do tomorrow. She needs to get some sleep, she can’t have this happen right now.

Another sob wracks her body, escaping her lips, and finally the dam breaks. Luz wails loudly, curling inwards on herself and tucking her fists into her chest. The sobs had stirred the witch sleeping next to her a little bit, but the sound of Luz crying makes Amity leap from the pillow to wrap her arms around the other woman. A hand dashes into Luz’s mess of hair, stroking slowly and the other squeezes tight around the human’s chest.

“Shh,” Amity coos, resting her head on top of Luz’s. She pulls her girlfriend in tight, keeping the other woman’s arms pinned down in place. The last thing Luz needed to do right now was try and hurt herself. “It’s okay, baby, I’m here.”

Another wail fills the room and Luz turns her head to muffle her cries into her witch’s shoulder. She’s already shivering, and while Amity did her best to keep the woman still, Luz’s body had other plans, making her kick her legs in a fit. Amity whispers more soothing words, starting to rock the human in her arms back and forth, as gently and as slowly as she can. The witch was groggy, but she knows how to care for her Luz.

Slowly, very slowly, loud desperate cries fade into small, hitching sobs and small sniffles. Luz’s legs stop moving, and she falls limply into Amity, burying her head further into the crook of her neck. Shivers still make her whimper, but seeing as she’s at least calm now, Amity brushes some of her hair out of the way. “What happened, sweet potato?”

Luz just whimpers, hiding her face from her girlfriend. “‘ad dream,” she manages after a few moments, and Amity sighs. It had been a few years, Belos having long been defeated and the entirety of the Isles rebuilt. But, in the time that Luz and Amity spent together creating a home for themselves, Luz had revealed more of what happened when Amity and the others got collected. Her meeting King’s father, being blessed with the Titan’s magic, her finally casting spells like she had seen every other witch on the isles do.

She was also sure to share that she had died. Amity admits that she had sensed it back then, but she couldn’t be sure. But, considering what it had done to Luz, she needed to talk to her about it. The witch was supportive, of course, she would be–Luz deserved nothing less, and Amity cares about her more than she cares about breathing on most days–but there were nights that got incredibly rough for the poor human, and some things kept rearing their ugly heads. She didn’t need to ask many more questions to know which dream Luz probably had.

Tugging at soft fleece, Amity pulls the blanket that had been thrashed around on their bed back up to them, wrapping it around Luz. She makes sure its snug enough before adjusting a pillow behind her, giving herself space to lean back with her human on her chest. She casts a spell circle, the gentle chimes of her magic bringing a small wave of calm over Luz. Carried by the witch’s magic, a soft plush toy in the appearance of a human realm otter floats over to Amity’s grip, who passes the animal onto Luz. She grabs it and holds it tight, her breath finally starting to regulate.

Along with the stuffed animal floats a pacifier. Amity looks down at Luz as she hands it to her, the human hesitating for a moment. In any other circumstance, Amity would’ve expected to hear something about how big girls don’t need pacifiers, and that Luz was okay without one–even if Amity caught her sneaking one after saying those things more than a few times–but whatever it was that was trying to make her human not take the pacifier loses very quickly, the woman parting her lips just enough for it to be popped into her mouth.

“You’re safe, Luz,” Amity whispers, pressing her lips to Luz’s crown. “You’re safe with me, baby. Do you need anything else?” Luz shakes her head. “Okay, sweet potato. It was just a dream. You’re still here, I’m still here. You’re okay.”

Amity begins to rock again, and Luz melts a little. While small trembles and quiet sniffles still work their way out of her, she’s calmed down enough to let the security of her witch take over her mind. Another kiss is pressed into her forehead, and then her cheek and Amity tucks her head down, yawning slightly.

“He’s not coming back ever again. You’re okay, baby, you’re okay.”

It takes quite a few minutes of this, soothing words and gentle touches, the slow rocking of her human, but eventually Luz dozes off, leaving sleeping soundly–if a little drooly–on Amity’s chest. Amity doesn’t stop whispering words, even after she casts another spell to move the pacifier and stuffed toy aside. She continues to whisper and hum to Luz, rocking her and soothing the other woman for as long as Amity can, until eventually her own lack of sleep catches up to her. Her eyes flutter shut, and she presses one last kiss to Luz’s head.

“Goodnight, Luz,” Amity whispers, before sleep takes her, too.
