Slip Away Between the Trees

Summary:

Drabble. “Wasn’t spring just yesterday?”

Work Text:

"Summer's just around the corner." Yuu said aloud, as she and Touko walked through the park; they knew it like the back of their hands, and yet there was much to see.

Touko nodded. "It certainly is, isn't it? Wasn't spring just yesterday?"

Yuu shrugged, and she looked forward, with Touko following suit.

She was quite certain it was spring just moments ago; she had noticed the temperatures rising, almost unbearable, and in between then and now, she and Yuu saw more of each other. They were working on the student council play, with so much unsaid until the last possible moment.

They walked under the shades of the looming trees, close, side by side.

Touko thought she didn't feel anything, especially for Yuu. She kept her distance, to not get hurt, but Yuu saw right through her. She wanted to be seen, she knew that, and Yuu knew that as well.

Yuu leaned close to Touko, gentle and familiar, and she couldn't help a smile. She was falling back into this feeling already, far from the agony of uncertainty, and with her feet walking on solid ground.

"How swiftly things change," Yuu said, turning to face Touko with her soft smile. "Isn't that right?"

Touko thought, and she nodded, leaning close to Yuu, wringing their hands together.

"Right."

"So, I guess we'll just have to see where it takes us." Yuu said.

"Yes, let's." Touko replied, firm and ready.

Yuu nodded once more, and Touko smiled.

That said, Touko and Yuu looked back out towards the sky, their hands threaded together.

They then walked on the trail, under the canopy of trees, with the sun waiting to greet them.
