Summary:

[“Jase, the cops are looking again, you gotta start keeping it more lowkey.” Daniel slipped into their dorm room, where Jason was standing between their beds, both covered with stacks on stacks of goods stuffed into ziploc baggies.

“Eh, you worry too much.” Jason waved off the worry, attention honed in on the list in his hand as he compared it to his stash, wondering if he would be able to make it through the sales without having to make another batch. ]

OR

Jason and Daniel are running a... business out of their dorm.

Notes:

So- I wrote this almost immediately after I published the last chapter, and then I sat on it for MONTHS trying to get it longer and better and just, trying too hard to make it something its really not haha. I'm not in love with this, but I've decided to just publish as is, and work on some other piece for this universe in place of this that hopefully flows a little better.

Hope you guys enjoy this bite-sized peek into the 'tales from campus' verse!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Wow this is addictive! When can I get more?”

“We’ll have another batch next week.”

“God, I’m gonna have to portion this out to last me until then.”

-

“You’re charging how much for this?”

“$10 a bag, 18 for two.”

“What- no way, I can get it way cheaper at that place down the road.”

“Fine, do what you want, but you know that it’s not gonna be nearly as good.”

“...Damn it, fine, give me 4.”

“Jase, the cops are looking again, you gotta start keeping it more lowkey.” Daniel slipped into their dorm room, where Jason was standing between their beds, both covered with stacks on stacks of goods stuffed into ziploc baggies.

“Eh, you worry too much.” Jason waved off the worry, attention honed in on the list in his hand as he compared it to his stash, wondering if he would be able to make it through the sales without having to make another batch.

“You say that, but campus security was poking around the lobby again, asking about our product.” Daniel sighed, long tired of this argument, but he made his efforts nonetheless. He swiped a hand through the excess stash, and Jason smacked at his hand, but he moved too fast, shoving his stolen goods in his mouth.

“I’m taking that out of your cut, I hope you know that.” Jason growled, flipping Daniel’s hat off his head in retaliation, and Daniel nearly choked on his mouthful of chocolate chunk cookies as he dove to catch it.

Cradling the hat close to his chest, checking it over for any scuffs, Daniel pouted up at Jason, “Th’ i’ min’ ‘ro!, he whined, unintelligible.

Jason snorted, raising an eyebrow at him over his clipboard, “You wanna try that again?”

Daniel chewed furiously, “I said, this is mint, bro! Look, stickers and everything! Don’t touch the swag, dude, or else you’re replacing it.”

Jason glanced over at the wall behind them, on which there were at least ten more hats mounted carefully that looked almost identical to Jason, and rolled his eyes.

“Alright, alright, Danny, fine. Sorry.” Jason laughed, and stuck out a hand to haul Daniel back to his feet. “But seriously, stop worrying about me, there’s no way anyone will be able to find me. I bake in the middle of the night in the comm kitchen, all the deals happen in the middle of the busiest areas with the least camera cover, and no one is gonna risk losing access to my stuff to snitch me out. The only danger to our business is that you keep sampling the merchandise right before drop days.”

Jason was no amateur, he knew how to run an under the table operation with the least risk possible, as long as Danny kept his cool.

“Well, maybe you should stop organizing the world’s best cookies right in our room right after I come back from a workout- you know what they do to me!” Daniel, like a good 70% of their campus (including the faculty), was helplessly weak to Jason’s baking.

Finally, Jason took mercy on Daniel and swept away the temptations, dumping all the orders into a giant IKEA tote, zipping it up and pushing it into the back of his closet.

“Where else do you suggest I manage the extremely illegal cookie business we run?” Jason asked dryly, throwing him onto his bunk as he lobbed a foam football directly into Daniel’s face.

Daniel barely caught it from where he was draped backwards on his desk chair, and he scrambled to keep a hold of it. “Why do you keep calling it that? They’re not even fun cookies, which like, would make sense.”

“I’m pretty sure I’ve explained this to you multiple times, while you were on fun cookies,” Jason laughed, remembering how many times Daniel had forgotten this explanation, “But, we’re not a qualified organization with food handling permits, so we aren’t allowed to sell out of our dorms.”

Daniel was silent for a minute, “Is that why I deliver on my skateboard?” he said, suddenly sitting up and launching the ball back at Jason.

“Yeah, dude,” Jason smirked, arching up to grab the ball out of the air with one hand, “That’s not technically out of our dorms, and that way, there’s no way anyone catches us in the middle of a transaction to pin anything on us.” He tossed the ball back at Daniel, who was staring closely at him, and barely managed to stop it before it smacked into his face.

“You… are a devious little man.” Daniel stated finally, “You get that from your step-mom or your dad?” He asked casually, but Jason could see Daniel hold his breath as he waited for Jason to react.

“Definitely both, ha.” Jason said after a breath, laughing a bit at the thought, “My dad taught me how to identify all the loopholes in rules, but my step-mom taught me how and which ones to break for my benefit.”

“Wow, that sounds like a hell of a childhood.”

Jason smiled fondly at some distant memory, silent for a second as he remembered a long past gone part of his life, “Y’know… it really was.”
