    “I don’t hate you,” George murmurs. He realises as the words leave his mouth that they’re the wrong thing to say. Sure enough, Sapnap scoffs.

    “Whatever, George. I don’t really give a shit any more. I’m over it.”

    He’s very obviously not over it, but George isn’t stupid enough to provoke him further right now. Instead, he turns the music up, up, drowningly loud.

    I love you. The sentence sits in his mouth like a lozenge, harsh and saccharine. He swallows it slowly, the sharp bitterness lingering long after it has been dissolved. He can taste it. He can taste it on his tongue. He can feel the sugar sinking into his teeth.

    He just needs to figure out how to get it past his lips.
