Work Text:

“What do you need for curry?”

Akito doesn’t know if he wants to lecture his clueless boyfriend about the basics of cooking or to kiss him for being so cute. And clueless. For God knows what reason, Akito decided today is the day Toya finally learns how to cook without burning the kitchen down. So here they are, Akito with a kitchen knife in his hand and Toya with a Hello Kitty apron, hoping to make some curry without offending all of Japan with Toya’s atrocious cooking skills.

Akito tries to start, “Well, first we should cut up some vegetables like potatoes and—“

“Carrots?”

“Hell no.”

Toya sighs. “Akito, you have to try eating carrots one day.” Akito feels his eye twitch. He loves Toya, he really does. But he doesn’t think he’ll be able to stomach carrots even with Toya’s puppy eyes and cute pleas.

“The day I try carrots is the day you try squid.”

“…Nevermind.”

Thought so. Akito goes over to place a small kiss on Toya’s forehead, albeit on his tippy toes, before manoeuvring behind Toya to guide him through the cutting process. He feels Toya stiffen a little when he placed the kitchen knife in his hand, but his body relaxes almost immediately when Toya realises Akito’s arms are wrapped around him, providing a warm reassurance.

“Hold the knife like this,” he positions the knife in Toya’s grip, “Position your left hand like this so you don’t slice your fingers off.” Akito pushes Toya’s hand down, helping him slice through a potato. Toya’s hands are nearly limp, letting Akito control his every move due to his uncertainty.

Akito can already feel Toya’s excitement over a goddamn potato.

“I did it.” He hears the amazement in Toya’s voice. It makes his heart flutter, such a simple act.

“You did it.”

They continue like this, chopping vegetables (except carrots) one slice at a time. After a while, Akito leaves Toya to it, going to prepare everything else because he trusts Toya, but not enough to believe he won’t burn the kitchen down.

Scratch that, even vegetables were a line he shouldn’t have crossed.

“Ouch!” He hears his boyfriend yelp, the sound of the knife clanking on the chopping block. Akito immediately rushes to Toya, looking for signs of a stray finger or an entire leg chopped off. He sees Toya clutching his finger with a cut barely visible with the gushing blood.

Okay, he’s exaggerating. It’s not that much blood, but it’s enough to send Akito into emergency “treat Toya immediately” mode. “This might hurt a little,” he warns Toya as he grabs his hand, applying pressure and running it under the tap water. Toya hisses at the cold contact, but it’s almost inaudible with the running water washing the blood off.

“You okay?” Akito asks, hoping he isn’t hurting Toya too much.

“Akito, you’d make a great husband.” Toya replies.

“Are you proposing to me with a bloody finger?” What the fuck he’s so cute what the fuck, “With a bloody finger that’ll look better with a ring on it.” The response was so natural that Akito froze for a moment, regretting ever teaching Toya how to flirt.

Akito blushes a red that’s awfully similar to the blood being washed away, and he’s pretty sure he can see Toya grinning at him. Focus, Akito. Bleeding finger. Dying boyfriend. “Keep your finger there.” He commands and Toya nods wordlessly, still amused.

Akito grabs the medkit, ensures the cut is no longer bleeding before cleaning and bandaging it up with a plaster with cute dog patterns. Toya stares at him the whole time, awed by Akito’s skill and preparedness.

“I’m sorry, Akito. It seems I still have trouble cooking.” Well, technically he didn’t really cook. But of course Akito, being weak for his cute and clumsy boyfriend, lets it slide and comforts him instead.

“Just sit back and watch, I’ll do the rest.” He knows Toya will probably just stare at him and force the Hello Kitty apron on him at some point, but he just lets it happen. Akito’s just a weak man.

And when Toya compliments his cooking for the thousandth time? When Toya kisses him and offers to wash the dishes as thanks? When Toya walks around proudly with his bandaged finger, showing the cute plaster to An and Kohane and gushing about their cooking experience?

Akito thinks it’s all worth it.
