Chapter Text
L.A. was its usual sunny weather and Buck, Eddie, and Christopher were at the park to catch some sunlight. It was an evening where the world seemed to have washed away its worries, leaving behind a sense of renewal and freshness. Eddie found himself in need of bonding time with his son, a rare moment of respite amidst the chaos of their demanding job.
With Christopher by his side, they engaged in a playful game of catch. Laughter filled the air, the sound filling the warm air/ Buck had joined in the impromptu game, his infectious grin spreading joy like wildfire.
"Nice throw, Christopher!" Buck's voice was a mix of genuine enthusiasm and encouragement as he tossed the ball to the young boy.
Eddie watched, a fond smile tugging at his lips, as Christopher's eyes lit up with excitement. Simple delight of being in the company of his two favorite people.
As the ball soared through the air, Christopher lunged for it, his small hands closing around it just in time. The victory in his eyes was undeniable, and he turned to Eddie with a triumphant grin.
"Dad, did you see that?" Christopher's excitement was contagious, and Eddie couldn't help but chuckle.
"I saw it, champ. You're getting really good at this," Eddie replied, his heart swelling with pride for his son.
Buck, his own grin unwavering, added, "Yeah, you're becoming a pro!"
At that moment, as Eddie glanced at Buck, the golden orange sun rays shone on his hair and on the side of his face. Buck didn’t look real at that moment. He looked as if Apollo himself had become human. Buck’s wide smile made his eye crinkle.
And it was like a switch had been flipped, and suddenly, he saw Buck in a new light. The laughter, the camaraderie, the genuine affection they shared – it was all right there, laid out in front of him like an open book. Everything he was looking for and more in the form of his best friend.
"Oh," the word escaped Eddie's lips before he could even process it, a realization washing over him like a warm wave.
Buck looked at him with a curious quirk of his brow. "Oh? What's up, Eddie?"
Eddie's heart raced, his cheeks warming with a mixture of surprise and realization. He met Buck's gaze, a playful twinkle in his eyes, and he couldn't help but chuckle. "Nothing, just... enjoying the moment, I guess."
Buck's grin widened, a knowing glint in his eyes. "Yeah, me too."
And in that shared exchange, amidst the sun-warmed grass and the echoes of laughter, Eddie knew that his feelings for Buck weren't just those of friendship and partnership. They were something deeper, something that had been growing quietly amidst their shared moments of happiness.
As the game of catch continued, Eddie's heart thudded hard; what should have been a joyful realization. Made dread grow in him. And as he laughed and played alongside Buck and Christopher, he couldn't help but feel terrified of what this meant.

The rain beat against the windows of the firehouse, a relentless rhythm that seemed to mirror the turmoil within Eddie's heart. He sat alone in the dimly lit break room, a heavy silence enveloping him as he grappled with the truth he had recently uncovered. The truth is that he was in love with Buck.
The realization had struck him like a lightning bolt, leaving him reeling and conflicted. It wasn't a joyous revelation; it was a weight that settled heavily on his shoulders. He had spent years building a friendship with Buck, a bond that had become the foundation of his life. And now, the specter of his own feelings threatened to shatter that foundation.
Eddie had always prided himself on being practical, on putting the needs of his family and his team first. He had buried his own emotions beneath layers of responsibility, convincing himself that he had moved on from the loss of Shannon. But the truth was, the scars of his past still lingered, and now they had been stirred by a new emotion he hadn't anticipated.
Buck's carefree demeanor, his infectious laughter, his unwavering support – they had all burrowed their way into Eddie's heart. He had watched Buck's own journey of healing, his pursuit of happiness, and somewhere along the way, he had fallen in love. But Eddie was gripped by fear – fear of ruining what they had, fear of tarnishing their friendship with the complexities of romantic emotions.
He had seen it happen before, relationships torn asunder by unrequited feelings, by the strain of desires unspoken. And he couldn't bear the thought of losing Buck, not in any capacity. So, in his desperation to preserve their bond, he had begun to pull away.
Conversations that once flowed effortlessly between them now stumbled over awkward silences. He found excuses to avoid spending time together, to avoid the magnetic pull that seemed to intensify whenever Buck was near. He had become an expert at evasion, a master of deflection, all in an effort to protect his heart and their friendship.
As he sat in one of the bunks, staring at his hands clenched tightly in his lap, a knock at the door pulled him from his thoughts. The door creaked open, and Buck's familiar voice broke through the heavy silence.
"Hey, Eddie, mind if I join you?"
Eddie's heart skipped a beat, a mix of relief and trepidation flooding his veins. He managed a tight smile and nodded, his voice gruff as he replied, "Sure, Buck."
Buck stepped into the room, his presence filling the space with an energy that was both comforting and unsettling. He settled into a bed across from Eddie, his gaze gentle but searching.
"You've been acting a bit distant lately," Buck began, his words cautious. "Is everything okay?"
Eddie's chest tightened, the weight of his emotions threatening to spill forth in a rush of honesty. But he held back, his gaze dropping to the table as he mumbled, "Yeah, just... dealing with some stuff."
Buck's brow furrowed, concern evident in his eyes. "You know you can talk to me about anything, right? We're partners, Eds."
The words struck a chord, a reminder of the bond they shared, a bond Eddie was so afraid of losing. He looked up at Buck, his expression a mix of turmoil and resignation. "I know, Buck. It's just... complicated."
Buck leaned forward, his voice gentle as he said, "Complicated how?"
Eddie's throat felt dry, his heart pounding in his chest. He knew he had a choice to make – to open up about his feelings, to risk everything for the chance of something more, or to continue down the path of avoidance, preserving their friendship at the cost of his own happiness.
He glanced into Buck's eyes, those eyes that held a depth of understanding and a warmth that had always been there for him. And at that moment, Eddie made his choice. He chose to safeguard their friendship, even if it meant sacrificing his own heart.
"It's just personal stuff, Buck," he said, his voice steady, his eyes avoiding the intensity of Buck's gaze. "I'll work through it."
Buck's expression shifted, a mixture of disappointment and acceptance. He nodded slowly, his shoulders sagging as if he understood the weight of Eddie's unspoken words.
"Alright, Eddie. Just remember, I'm here whenever you're ready to talk."
As Buck got up to leave, Eddie watched him go, a knot of conflicting emotions tightening in his chest. He had chosen to shut Buck out, to protect their friendship, but in doing so, he couldn't ignore the ache in his heart. Love had a way of defying logic, of persisting even when it wasn't welcome. And as the rain continued to fall outside, it seemed to echo the tears that Eddie refused to shed – tears for a love he couldn't embrace, tears for the friendship he was afraid of losing, and tears for the heart that remained caught in the storm of his own emotions.
