Chapter Text
One thing that the boys were looking forward to in high school that April had raved on and on about, was prom. Ok, maybe she didn't rave about it per say, but whenever she brought it up, they couldn't help but get excited.
Mikey had seen countless teen movies depicting what prom would look like, and honestly, he just wanted to dance. You're telling him he gets to spend a whole night just letting lose with a bunch of his classmates and eat a bunch of snacks? Where does he sign up?
Another thing that came with prom- prom dates. Apparently, some people were lucky enough to be asked to prom, and even participated in some sort of slow dance if they liked each other enough. Mikey thought it was an incredibly romantic gesture, but he surely didn't expect he would be one of those lucky people to have a date for himself.
It has been over a good month since the boys had started high school, and Mikey had honestly made friends with more than half his grade. People loved him, a lot, he had chemistry with all types of people. And, honestly, he's actually been asked to prom more than once by the time Friday rolled around.
First, he actually got a note from a boy in his locker. Yeah, he was finally given his own locker! It had that Mario bros sticker he found a long time ago on it, as well as a bunch of other colorful ones his classmates had given him. Anyway- back to that letter. Mikey's face bloomed a dark green at receiving a letter at all.
But he turned him down, feeling a twinge of guilt when he noticed the frown on the student's face. He would eventually get used to seeing this, since throughout the day, no one chose to leave him alone. A month ago, he would have been completely oblivious to the idea of someone falling for him. Now he found it hard to ignore the fact that it seemed like half of his gym class was fawning over him. His brothers teased him about it, saying things like 'guess you can choose whoever you want, huh' and 'look at you, Casanova.' Mikey would reply, 'guys, this is literally so embarrassing can we please change the topic.' He didn't think he did anything special, he just knew how to be nice to people!
Anyways, that brings us to the now. It was Friday morning in his theater class, and he was going over a sheet of a new script the teacher handed out. The class had a decision to study over the scripts of either the Titanic, or the notorious Romeo and Juliet. The class unanimously decided on Titanic. This would be interesting.
He hadn't noticed his good friend Evette enter the classroom yet, her folder pressed against her chest as a few of her friends crowded around her. They weren't from this class, so many of the students were looking up to them in confusion as to why they were there. Evette had her brows bunched together, heat gathering in her face as she walked closer to Mikey's desk.
"You can do it!"
"Come on, you've been reciting it all night. We believe in you!" Mikey, of course, heard them despite their attempt at whispering. He turned up from his paper to find Evette looking down at him, her face completely red. He set down the paper, giving her all of his attention.
"Oh, hey Eve! What's wrong?" He stood up from his seat, a bit worried at the nervous look on her face. She held her folder tighter, looking him in the eyes before the words fell from her mouth.
"Mikey, w-would you like to go to prom with me? Maybe-" That was all she could get out. She pulled the confidence from deep in her core and did her best to form a question. Now she eagerly wait for his reply.
Every other memory of being asked that before this was thrown out the door, his mouth hung open in shock when he realized what she said. And he knew, oh he knew how much it took for her to ask that. He wasn't the oblivious little kid he was a month ago, he now understood his friend well enough to know she had feelings for him. Yet, she still hadn't expressed them in detail yet, so this was a starting point for her. Who was he to refuse?
"Of course I'll go to prom with you!" He smacked his hands against his desk as he said that, maybe a tad bit too dramatic. It was as if he'd been waiting for her to ask him this the whole time. The class immediately erupted in cheers after he spoke his answer aloud, the group of girls pulling Evette back to them with smiles on their faces.
"Oh my god, he said yes!"
"Eve, I'm so happy for you!"
They held her hands, and Mikey noticed the way she had a nervous, yet excited smile on her face that she was attempting to hide from him. He fell back down to his seat, picking up his script, but not really reading the words. His fingers crumpled the edges of the page as a bashful smile spread on his lips. He was glad her friends pulled her away before she could see the heat in his face. That made him a lot happier than he expected it to.
So what was the plan? They had settled down by their last class, exchanging friendly conversation at the entrance of the school. Mikey was waiting for his brothers, Evette was waiting for her ride. They both had their script packet in their hands.
"Hey, maybe I can go to pick you up from your house for prom night. That's how they usually do it in the movies I've watched, like true gentlemen." He grinned up to her, she pressed her script to her lips.
"Really? You wouldn't mind doing that?" Mikey was so sweet for that, she felt so lucky he had said yes at all. But if Mikey was going to be her 'date' for prom, he wanted to be a good one.
"For you? Anything!" He would say he didn't know how his words affected her, but deep down he did. She faced ahead to the street, unable to hide the redness in her cheeks any longer. Mikey was smiling to himself, beginning to say something more before an arm wrapped around his shoulders. He turned to find Casey looking down at him, flashing his crooked teeth that reflected his brother's.
"Hey, Mike. Your brothers not here yet?" He smiled up at him.
"Not yet, I'm surprised Raph isn't with you."
"His last class is p.e. His friends are probably holding him up in the locker rooms." He turned to Evette, who gave him a shy glance in his direction. Casey raised a hand in greeting, having seen her before in one of his classes, but never actually speaking to her.
"Hi. Casey Jones. Friend of Mike's?" She nodded, motioning down to her script.
"Yes- we have theater together. I'm Evette, nice to meet you." Casey looked down at Mikey, a knowing smile spreading on his face. Mikey still talked about her a lot to his brothers, and Casey eventually joined those conversations. He gave Mikey a pat on his back, a silent exchange of 'nice, bro.' Mikey went green.
"Tell Raph I have to head home early. You guys have a good one, I'll see you Monday, yeah?" He saluted to the both of them, not wanting to disturb the beginnings of whatever the two of them had going on. Mikey wished everyone would stop trying to embarrass him, but he knew that wasn't possible. When a familiar truck pulled at the entrance, he turned back Evette.
"Then, 7 pm. Just send me your address, and I'll probably show early." Evette let out a small chuckle.
"Ok, then- I'll see you Monday night." She waved her hand to him before going to the truck. It was soon after that his brothers finally appeared, Raph asking if he had seen Casey anywhere at the entrance. He looked rather disappointed to learn he already went home. Mikey pulled the straps of his backpack down his shoulders, taking in a breath before he broke the news to the three of them.
"So- Eve asked me to prom on Monday." The three of them were blinking at him, they were right in the middle of a nonsensical conversation when he said that. Donnie was the first to react, his hand flying in the air and going to pat against his back.
"No way! She did? We thought she'd never ask, wait- you said yes, right?" His brows furrowed, and Mikey couldn't believe he was asking him that question. Had he no faith in him?
"Of course I said yes! I even said I'll pick her up from her house!" Leo nodded sagely at this revelation, his fingers resting at his chin.
"How kind of you Mikey, I'm sure she'll be happy about it. Hey, I can go with you! We can even get her a bouquet of flowers, wouldn't that be nice?" He suggested, and Mikey's eyes were sparkling.
"You'd help me with that?" Raph was grinning.
"Damn, didn't know you were the cheesy type." Mikey puffed his cheeks out at his brother.
"She likes that type of stuff! I don't mind getting her some flowers- it's my first prom. And, like, my first date ever. I have to make a good impression!" He was dead serious, so Raph decided to lay off the joking. Instead, he placed his hand over his back, bringing him to walk with them.
"Yeah yeah, I'm sure she'll love it big guy."
"We gotta go to the thrift to find nice outfits for ourselves, actually. You all are going, right?" Leo turned to his brothers, no one denied him. He nodded to himself, sending a message to April.
"Alright, cool. Then we can go out tomorrow morning. We have to look our best, dad wants pictures." They all groaned, knowing full well their dad was going to hang pictures from their prom around their home or put even put them in frames. That's what he did with pictures of Mikey's first play, and it was beginning to get embarrassing for even him. But maybe they shouldn't complain too much, their dad was just happy for them.
They spent that Saturday looking for some nice clothes. They weren't exactly sure where their dad was getting the money from, but he always came back with a full wallet after visiting the other mutants. Leo hoped they weren't robbing banks or something, but he chose not to ask, just accepting the wallet with a smile.
Mikey found a nice plaid button up, with an orange tie. His brothers sort of judged him for it, Mikey always chose different patterns and bright colors when it came to clothing. But he wanted to stay true to himself, he wasn't about to slip on some boring suit like everyone else there would! The suit coat he found complimented the lighter orange in his button up, then he found a pair of light brown dress shoes.
Raph ditched them somewhere in the middle of that day, setting his outfit over his bed. But Leo collected everyone's clothing, handing it all over to April who said she would take them home and wash their clothes for them. They had learned that was supposedly a rule when thrifting. Always wash your clothes after you buy them, never know where they've been through.
The next day, he went out with Leo and Mondo to look for some flowers. The gecko decided to tag along after hearing about how Mikey got himself a date, he was so excited for him.
"Brah, you's got to get her the biggest bouquet. Everyone's gots to be zealous." Mondo poked at one of the large bouquets at the front counter of the store they were in. It was a mix of gorgeous flowers, and Mikey can't deny he was tempted, but then he thought about it more.
"Well- actually, I think the smaller ones would be better for her." The gecko stuck out his tongue, taking a look at the smaller ones Mikey was admiring.
"What gurl likes a small bouquet?" Mikey smiled to himself.
"Eve does." Leo took a closer look at the flowers as well, noticing how serious the contemplating look on Mikey's face was.
"Well, you're the expert here Mikey. Which one do you think would be best?"
Mikey's eyes were drawn to the colorful bouquets. The ones with flowers of bright yellows and whites, large sunflowers, those were his favorites. But this wasn't his bouquet, this was Evette's. So he directed his attention towards the bouquet of roses.
He knew Evette loved roses. Was it a common choice? Yeah, maybe. He sort of wished she gave him more of a challenge, but she was a simple girl. And sometimes, simple was a nice change. The lady behind the counter caught him staring at one of the bouquets.
"Is there a certain type you're looking for?" Mikey smiled to her, pointing to the roses.
"I want a rose bouquet. These ones look really pretty." She nodded, noticing the bundle of red roses.
"Are you sure you want this one? If you'd like, I can make a custom bouquet just for you. We have many different colored roses in the back." Mikey looked as if she just handed him the golden ticket to the Wonka Factory.
"You can do that?" She laughed a little, pulling out a chart that showed the variations of the different colors of roses they had.
"Roses and their colors are a good way to express certain feelings and desires of another person. Look here, red with pink roses are usually a really good choice. I'm sure it would make your girlfriend happy, no?" Mikey's lips pressed together, his face beating in a dark green color. His fingers tangled together as he looked down at the chart.
"Well- she's not-" Leo placed a hand on his back, smiling to the lady.
"Not his girlfriend, it's his prom date. A really good friend of his."
"Oooh." She smiled down at Mikey, going back down the list with an apology.
"Then, let's take a look at these ones here. The yellow is a good color to symbolize friendship. I think it would look nice paired with some white roses. Don't you think?" Mikey was scanning over the chart, his eyes were glued to the orange roses. Right under them, a small word. 'Desire.' He pointed at the picture.
"Can we add one or two of the orange ones?" She looked where his finger pointed, shutting her eyes with a smile as she realized the meaning behind his question.
"Of course, maybe two of each will make a nice sunset-looking bouquet. I think she'll love it." Mikey smiled to himself, proud to have made a custom boutique just for his friend. An idea popped into his mind, and before she could disappear to the back of the store, he called out to her.
"Uh, wait, Miss? Actually, can we take one red rose on the side by itself?"
"You're actually getting the red rose?" Leo whispered to him, Mondo cut between them to whisper too.
"Dawg, are you gonna confess to her or something?!" Mikey blushed honestly, swatting away their assumptions.
"No! What? It's not for me." They both tilt their head in curiosity, wondering what he meant.
Mikey set the flowers beside his bed that night. Donnie gave him a small spray bottle full of water so he could keep them alive and well until prom night. He sprayed at the roses, before remembering that he still had that red one. Mikey picked up the red rose, spraying some water on it before he ran to his brother's bed.
Raph was in the middle of an essay he had been assigned on Thursday. He actually had a whole week to complete it, but he said he wanted to get it done as soon as possible so he wouldn't have to worry about it. Mikey could hear a familiar Drake song sounding from the headphones he wore. Raph turned up to him, his eyes glancing at the rose in his hand before he moved to take off his headphones.
"Hey Raph-"
"Mikey, I know you love us to death and all, but this is just straight up weird."
"What?"
"I decline." He was about to pull back on his headphones before Mikey snatched them away from him. Raph was about to start complaining before he shoved the rose into his chest.
"No you genius- This isn't for you, this is for Casey!" Raph rose a brow, still not picking up what he was putting down.
"You... want to give a rose to Casey?" Mikey threw his hands in the air.
"Are you out of your mind?!" He dropped the rose in Raph's lap, who picked it up like it was an estranged object to him. To be honest, it was quite pretty.
"You give it to him, Raph. He's your boyfriend, right? I saw it at the shop today when I was going to get a bouquet for Eve." Raph examined the rose closer, as if he wasn't sure what he was supposed to do with it.
"Should I?" He questioned, mostly himself. Mikey gave him a reassuring smile, placing his headphones back on the bed as an apology for taking them.
"Yeah, I think he'll like it. Plus, it's supposedly really romantic. So why not?" Be romantic? Him? It was an embarrassing thought- but was it impossible? Mikey left his brother to contemplate to himself on his bed, his essay seemingly forgotten. He went back to tending to the roses near his own bed, smiling at the wonder of what her reaction will be.
And then came the long awaited Monday. Students were talking about nothing but the night's prom in every one of his classes. He found out that there were be a couple photo booths set up outside the gym for pictures, and a DJ coming to the school for the music. It was all sounding more exciting to him by the minute, he felt he couldn't keep still in his seat.
He had tried to talk to Evette multiple times throughout the day, but it seemed like everyone would butt in their conversation or steal her away. Now he was moping at his desk in his science class, watching one of the tubes bubble with a blue liquid.
"Cheer up Michael, you'll get to see her tonight, won't you?" His classmate asked, writing their hypothesis for the lab. Mikey frowned, going to add a clear liquid to the tube.
"Yeah, but I don't get why that means I'm not allowed to talk to her at school until prom starts." His classmate giggled when he flinched away from the tube, the bubbles were riding to the top.
"It's prom, Michael. It's like, what every girl waits for their entire school year. At least most of us do. She's probably just getting the emotional support she needs from her friends to hype her up, don't take it personally." But Mikey was taking it personally, he just wanted to talk to her. That shouldn't be a big deal, should it?
He wondered that the whole way home, hurriedly putting on his outfit for the night and just wanting to get the ball rolling already. He hadn't even been able to tell her 'goodbye, see you at 7' because a friend of hers dragged her straight out of the school gates before he could say anything.
He pulled over his suit's coat, feeling warm and snug in his layers of clothing. He turned to Leo to get an opinion, and his brother examined him over with his fingers to his chin.
"You know, honestly. It's works for you. I don't think it would work for anyone else." Donnie nodded his head in agreement, struggling to tie his dress shoes.
"Good. Hey, where did you guys put that one perfume?"
"Oh, it's right here." Leo handed Mikey a small bottle of clear liquid. He sprayed himself a few times and covered his mouth to cough. The perfumes smelled nice, but sometimes they were too strong.
"Are you guys both going to pick her up?" Leo nodded his head, turning to Donnie.
"Yeah, why? Do you wanna come with?" Donnie shook his head.
"Nah. I'm going with Raph and Casey. I'm gonna meet up with my friends there, I'll see you guys when you get there." He finally succeeded in properly tying his shoes, feeling a sense of victory.
"Sounds like a plan. You ready to go Mikey? Have that screenshot of her address?" Mikey searched through his gallery, stopping on the message she had sent him a day ago of her address.
"Yeah! Let's go, the maps say it's about a ten minute walk from here." Mikey picked up the bouquet of flowers next to his bed, poking at the colorful petals.
Before they walked out of the living room, Splinter squished both of their faces between his hands, pressing a kiss against their foreheads.
"You boys have lots of fun, and I want pictures! Don't forget, or I'll text you to make sure." Leo shook his head.
"Yes dad, we promise. Come on, let's get going before it gets even later." Splinter gave Mikey a thumbs up, wishing him good luck with his first 'date'. Mikey smiled as they left their home, starting their route to Evette's.
Was he nervous? Well, maybe just a little. Mikey was more excited than anything else. He would be spending his first prom with all of his favorite people! It doesn't get much better than this, he had a smile glued to his face the whole walk, Leo couldn't help but smile with him.
When they finally stopped at her front door, Mikey was the one who rang the doorbell. He hid the bouquet of flowers behind his back, standing up straight and proud, ready to greet her on her way out.
It was a moment before the door inched open, being stopped by a lock as an eye peeked through the space. It was shut again before they heard the lock being messed with, and out came a woman in a flowery apron, her hair big.
"Oh my! You must be here for Eve, I'm assuming?" Mikey gave the woman a polite nod.
"Yes ma'am! I'm Michael, I told her I was picking her up today for prom!" Leo waved to the woman.
"I'm his brother Leon." The woman pressed her fingers to her mouth, smiling at their adorable green faces.
"My, of course. She was telling me all about it. One moment, I'll go call for her. She should be ready by now." She shut the door again, so as not to let any flies inside. Mikey could feel the anticipation rise up in his chest. He couldn't wait to give her the flowers. Leo placed a hand on his shoulder, he was also excited for his little brother.
Evette was the one who opened the front door this time, and Mikey could swear to you his heart stopped for just about a second or two. She had a nervous smile on display, pressing a small purse to her legs as she greeted the both of them.
Mikey had never seen her dress this way. Not in the entire month he's known her. She had a short gold dress on that glittered with the setting sun. The dress didn't have any long sleeves like she'd normally wear, only thin strings that hung around her shoulders. She was even wearing small heels, heels! They made her even taller than she was before! The only thing that showed her more young and youthful character was the way her hair had been done, half of it pulled up with her naturally messy bangs.
Mikey was rendered completely speechless, his mouth hanging open and ready to catch flies. He was then reminded that Evette was in fact a whole young woman. He thought she belonged on the cover of some of his favorite albums, next to Beyoncé! He forgot she could be so bold. Evette was practically a different person when she was on stage, honestly, what should he have expected? She tucked some hair behind her ear, her lashes fluttering closed and he realized she wore light makeup.
"Is it too much?" Her voice sounded nervous, he felt his brother's hand pat his shoulder. He turned to find Leo with an awestruck look. He smiled at Mikey, knowing that his little brother was, in every way the phrase meant, shell-shocked.
"I think she looks like a proper young lady, don't you boys think? Her bangs were a bit of a struggle to get down though." The woman, who they now recognized as her mother, had her hands placed on Evette's shoulders. Evette blushed at the mention of her hair, feeling embarrassed for being unable to get them to sit right. Mikey's mouth struggled to form a proper sentence, before he just forced himself to blurt something out.
"Eve! You look gorgeous!" Leo nodded with his words, watching her face go a light shade of red. Her mother whispered close to her ear.
"Isn't that nice?" She turned back to the two boys, pointing her finger at Mikey.
"I'm expecting you to take good care of her tonight. Don't let any of the boys bug her." She gave a wink to Leo, because they both knew the boy who would be bugging her tonight was Mikey.
Mikey nodded, forcing down the lump in his throat. He didn't know what to do for a few seconds, before he remembered he had a bouquet in his hands. He held it out in front of him, an innocent smile on his face.
"Uhm- these! I got these for you... I thought you might like them, they're pretty, right?" She pressed her hands to her cheeks before accepting the flowers from him. Then she opted to hiding behind it, her red face making even Mikey nervous.
"T-They are so pretty, thank you. I've never gotten flowers before..." Mikey caught an older man walking behind her mother in the house. He gave Mikey one look, stern eyes letting him know to not try anything. Mikey knew his face was bursting with color.
"You kids have fun, I don't mind when you bring her back, as long as she doesn't come back alone. Have a nice time, dear." She gently pushed her daughter away from the door, handing her over to the two turtles at her doorstep. They all heard the lock click, nervously glancing in the space between them. Leo clapped his hands, attempting to break the awkward tension.
"Well... alright! Let's go then guys, Don and Raph have probably already gotten there. Can't have them stealing all the cupcakes!" He knew there would be a lot of treats at the prom, Sanjay had told him about it because he helped set up.
"Yeah, Leo's right. Raph literally eats a box of pop tarts a day if we let him. We had to start telling April to give them to us in secret so we can hide it when we get home." Evette chuckled, pressing the bouquet against her chest as they started their walk to the school.
"Pop tarts are pretty good, have you ever tried putting them in the toaster?" Mikey shook his head, his eyes becoming large.
"Does it taste good?"
"So good. That's how my brother and I eat them all the time. You guys should try it." Leo made a mental note do so next time.
"Yeah, for sure. I'll tell Raph about it, he might really like it." They listened the rest of the way to the food hacks Evette gave them. Her brother always came up with weird combinations, like pretzels and Nutella. Or peanut butter on Oreos, Mikey thinks he saw that in a movie once. He would be sure to try that next time.
When they reached their school, they headed towards the gymnasium. They could already hear loud music booming through the walls, flashing colors of light pooling out from the entrance. Leo led them both inside, already seeing swarms of students gathering in the middle of the gym. There was a DJ and his equipment set up at one end, taking requests from a few of the students.
"Wow, it's like- really loud in here!" Mikey called, pressing two fingers against the sides of his head. Evette came up beside him, pressing her ear in.
"What?" She asked, but Mikey just laughed at her, not really hearing her question. Leo tapped his shoulder, motioning over to a corner where he found some of his classmates.
"Hey, Mikey, I'm gonna go find Bobby and Angie, you guys good on your own?" Mikey stuck his thumb up, letting Leo run off to his friends. He turned back to Evette, his head pointing towards the snack table that had been set up.
"Wanna get some cupcakes? Looks like Raph didn't get to them yet!" She chuckled into her hand, nodding and following close behind him to the long table set against a wall of the gym. Where should he start? The table was stacked with cupcakes, milk, even those sugar cookies you could get from the local grocery store. The kind that made your mouth dry but you just can't stop eating.
"These are my favorite, I used to eat these all the time at birthdays!" She picked one of the cookies up, the dough and icing crumbling in her fingers. Mikey picked a cupcake for himself, lighting up when he realized they used buttercream frosting instead of whip cream.
"Hey! They used real frosting!" He took a big bite of the cupcake, his teeth dragging out the paper cup that held it together. Evette chuckled softly at his face, taking a nearby napkin and bringing it to his lips.
"You have a mustache now." She patted the napkin over his lips, and Mikey could feel the wires in his brain short circuit. He stood still so she could clean him up, throwing the napkin in a nearby trash can.
"Here, try this one. It's a strawberry sugar cookie." She broke a piece off of the cookie she tried, handing it to him. It was from a side her mouth didn't touch, but it still made Mikey blush. He ate the cookie without another word, the artificial flavoring coating over his tongue.
"It's delicious, I've never tried the strawberry ones before."
"They have other ones here too, look!" She was trying to show him the other flavors of cookies before a group of girls appeared beside her. They turned her around to look at her dress, squealing in excitement.
"Oh my goddd yes Eve! You look so pretty, you have to get some pictures with us!"
"Not even any tights? Scandalous~" Evette covered her face in embarrassment, thanking them for the compliments. Mikey recognized that group of girls, they were the ones that had ratted her out right in front of him weeks ago. Apparently they apologized to her and everything turned out good, but they still weren't his favorite people.
"Hey, Michael. We know you both are on a date and everything, but could we take her for just one picture? Prettyyy please?"
"We promise to bring her right back, this will be the only chance we get to capture this memory!" Oh, so they were pulling that card on him. Mikey wanted to frown, say no and pull her back over to the dance floor. Instead he forced that friendly smile of his.
"Yeah! Of course, I'll just be... waiting here, I guess." Evette wanted to say something, but a hand stopped her from moving closer to Mikey. One of the girls ripped the bouquet from her hands.
"These are gorgeous, no way did you get these for her? Sooo cute, and you guys aren't even dating yet. Good for you, Eve!" She handed the bouquet back to Mikey and winked at him.
"We'll be right back, take good care of her flowers!" Mikey looked at the bouquet in his hands, the corner of his mouth twitching down. They left him standing there, alone by the snack table. He must of had a real mug on his face for his brother to smack him on the back, breaking the stare he had at the floor.
"Yo. What the hell's got you looking all mad." He turned up to both Raph and Casey, the flowers hanging in his hand.
"Some girls took Eve away for some photos. Not that it's a problem or anything, but..." He shrugged, not really sure why he was feeling this way. They said they'd bring her right back, right? What was there to be mopey about? He snagged another strawberry cookie from the table.
"What the hell? They dragged your date away from you? I'd be pissed too." Casey chimed in, his elbow resting over Raph's shoulder. He leaned closer to Mikey.
"You jealous she's not taking photos with you?" Mikey jumped on his feet, accidentally biting his tongue instead of the cookie.
"I'm what?" Casey grinned, Raph just rolled his eyes at his antics.
"You're jealous, right? She is your prom date. Why let everyone else take her away from you? Look, you even picked her up from home and brought her some flowers! They can always take pictures after, this was supposed to be your guy's night, yeah?" He used his free hand to tap over Raph's chest.
"If someone stole him away from me tonight, I'd probably just start beefing." Raph swatted his hand away.
"Don't, you'll get us kicked out of prom! I actually want to go dance." Mikey let the words sink into his person. Casey was right, Evette was his prom date. And maybe, yeah- maybe he was starting to get jealous. Is that what you would call it? It's not like he's never been jealous before, he's been jealous of his brothers multiple times. Especially when they were given the last slice of pizza and not him. But this type of jealousy felt a bit different.
"Oh my god. I think I'm jealous!" It was like he solved the last equation on his math sheet, the cookie in his hand dropped back onto the table.
"Wow, really? Crazy- never would have guessed." Raph's voice held nothing but sarcasm, and it managed to somehow tick off Mikey more. His hold on the bouquet tightened, Casey pointed to the back entrance of the gym.
"Go get your girl, Mike. The photo booths are out back." So Mikey did, after taking one more bite of the sugar cookie for good luck.
He was stopped a few times, students greeting him left and right, telling him how cool his outfit looked and how different it was. He complimented a few outfits too, almost getting distracted himself and going back to his original plans. He stepped out of the gym, finding the booths set around the basketball field. He wondered when they brought those in, maybe this morning?
It was the one farthest away from the gym where he spotted Evette, one of the girls urging her to get into the small space of the booth. Mikey ran up to their group, holding the flowers tight so they would slip out of his hands. The girl next to Evette turned to him with a frown.
"What? We told you we'd bring her right back, it's literally just for one picture."
"Oh come on, you're already looking for her again? We just got here!" Evette was hesitating to go into the booth with them now, turning to Mikey with a guilty look on her face.
"I'm sorry, Mikey..." She felt bad for letting them drag her away, her eyes glued to the flowers he had given her. Mikey pursed his lips, choosing to ignore the girls around them and taking a hold of Evette's hand.
"Dude, what are you doing? You said we could take a picture with her!" Evette raised her hand to stop them from arguing, but Mikey gave the girl a hard glare.
"You can do that later, right? I want to dance with her... she's my prom date. Not yours." He handed Evette her flowers back, apologizing to her for his behavior. One of the girls crossed her arms over her chest.
"Uh- what the hell? Are you trying to be possessive over her? That's like, toxic or something. Eve, are you really just gonna leave?" Mikey turned to Evette, his hand squeezing hers.
"Did you want to take photos with them?" If she did, he really would have felt like a huge jerk for coming all the way over here to steal her back. Evette squeezed his hand back, hugging her bouquet of flowers with her hand. She shook her head, indicating that she'd rather go to the dance floor than stay here any longer.
"Let's go then." Mikey pulled her along, it felt like he was a knight in shining armor who had saved her from a secluded castle... Or something like that? He's not too sure, that was the first thing his mind came up with.
When the girls started calling for her to come back, Evette turned over her shoulder. Her face was red, but she was much more comfortable by Mikey's side. She gave the girls a shrug of her elbow, smiling to them before hiding away into her flowers. Honestly, she wasn't a fan of them either.
The bass of the music drowned out every other sound. Mikey felt his hand tighten around hers when even more people joined the middle of the gym. He looked back to Evette, and realized she was staring down at their hands. He reluctantly let go in a fit of panic, yelling out to her.
"I'm sorry I dragged you away from you friends!"
"What!?" It was a really loud song they were playing, Mikey stood on his toes to reach closer to her ear.
"I said, I'm sorry I dragged you away from your friends!" She smiled sweetly at him, shaking her head as her fingers wrapped around his arm. She didn't want to lose him.
"Don't worry, I only know them from one class!" Mikey placed his hand over her fingers.
"Then why do they keep bugging you all the time?!" She shrugged, leaning close to his side.
"I don't know! It's weird!" Mikey started laughing, it looked like people never wanted to leave Evette alone either. He could relate to that. He felt someone bump against his shell, turning to see a random student whip their head back up to look at him.
"Bro, I'm sorry! I was just getting into the beat, you feel? Damn your shell is hard!"
"I'm sorry!" Mikey apologized back, stepping away from the guy who repeatedly banged his head to the music. He realized Evette was laughing even more than before, covering her mouth with a hand. Mikey was grinning up at her, he shrugged his shoulders because he didn't know what else to do.
"Do you want to dance?!" She nodded her head, her hair falling over her face.
"Yeah! Yeah, I want to!" They were both laughing now, Evette realized she was still holding her bouquet. She rose up a finger to him, walking over to the bleachers that were set up in the gym. She put her roses down in an empty spot, along with the purse she had on her, hiding it under the bouquet.
When she was done, Mikey held out his hand to her with a smile, inviting her to join him back on the 'dance floor.' She accepted his hand, and he pulled her straight to the middle, where it was crammed with the most students dancing back to back.
Mikey was the one who encouraged her to let loose. At first, she made small side steps, but Mikey said that the song was too loud and too 'lit' to be doing such a thing, so he started kicking his feet and head banging along with the other students. Evette eventually got confident enough to follow his movements, although not as dramatically. They were laughing in the middle of it, bumping sides with multiple students next to them.
At one point, Donnie and Mikey bumped shells, he turned with a cringe and found Donnie in a circle with his friends. They all smiled when they recognized him, Donnie turned with a push of his glasses.
"Sorry Mikey! There's like, no space here!" Donnie pulled out his phone, opening up his camera app. "Mikey, you should throw it back! Let's get it on video!"
"You did not just tell your brother to shake ass in front of a camera." Cody snorted into his hand, quickly realizing that Mikey was far more than down for it.
"Bet! Hey Eve, watch this!" Evette gave him some space, her hand flinging up to her mouth to hide her laugh when Mikey attempted to twerk in front of the phone his brother was holding. His arms moved in a wave at his sides, and everyone beside him lost it. Donnie was hyping him up like no tomorrow.
"YEAHH! He's still got it!"
"Hm, ok, get it I guess!" Carly laughed, she and Ray started clapping their hands in an attempt to encourage him. Hannah jumped into the free space, patting Mikey's shoulder.
"Hey dude, I could do that to!"
"Oh no, someone get her out of there-"
"Hannah, no! Stop- girl put your ass away!"
"Oh god, this is embarrassing..." Donnie laughed, covering the camera of his phone so no one had to pay witness to Hannah's dancing. She looked like she was snapping her back in two before Ray pulled her away, shaking their head with an exasperated look.
"I think it was ok!" Evette laughed, trying her hardest to be nice to Hannah amongst the haters surrounding her. Hannah wrapped her in a hug, tapping their heads together.
"Aww see, this is why she's so much cooler than all of you. Come on, Evette, let's dance with Mikey away from these losers."
"Awe come on, we were just kidding!" Donnie complained, Cody bumped his shoulder.
"No we weren't! You actually suck at dancing, never do it again!" They were sharing more banter before the song drowned out their voices again.
They went back to dancing together as a large group, and Mikey could tell that Evette had finally begun to really enjoy herself. When she strayed too far and hit the back of some male student, he pulled her back with a hand pressed to her back. She turned to Mikey with a blush, the green in his face matching the red in her own. They just went back the groove with a few smiles, Mikey forgot to let go of her for a minute.
At some point, the DJ had instructed that the students leave the floor and make way for any couples to share a dance for the night. They would be playing a song or two especially for them, so the majority of their group walked over to the bleachers. Mikey looked back to find a few people already gathering together behind him, and he blushed, wondering if he would be one of them in the future. He glanced to Evette as she took a seat next to her bouquet, wondering if she was thinking the same.
Donnie and his friends sat beside them at the bleachers. He looked out to the much smaller group of people, spotting his brother and Casey in there. He smiled, glad to see that his brother was enjoying himself. Evette tapped his shoulder, he turned to find her holding up her phone.
"Mikey, is it ok if I get a picture of us? My mom wanted to print one." Mikey's face beamed, he patted down his shirt before nodding.
"Oh- Yeah! Of course, I wanted to get a picture with you too! Do I look alright?" He asked, motioning to his outfit, hoping it didn't look worn.
"Of course! You look Han-" Her face went pink, her phone flopped in her hands as she pushed back her hair. "-You look good. I really like your outfit..." Mikey's head was spinning, he suddenly felt a rush of embarrassment out of nowhere.
"Oh! Ok, good. Thank you! Uhm, you too..." She looked back at him, they shared their nervous smiles before she scooted in closer to to raise her phone in front of of them. Mikey tilted his head towards hers, smiling bright in the camera to show the color at his teeth. She did the same, and at the last second, Mikey held a peace sign with his fingers.
She brought her phone back to look, a smile stretched onto her face as she examined the photo. Mikey leaned closer to look himself, pointing to her phone.
"You'll send it to me, right? My dad wants photos of us too!" She nodded her head, pushing her phone against her chest.
"Yeah... I'll send it right now!"
They were mostly chatting amongst themselves as the slow songs started playing. Mikey got up to get some soda cans for himself as well as Donnie's friends. He gave Evette a capri-sun, she wasn't a fan of most sodas. Donnie had pulled out his phone to record Raph and Casey from where they sat, Mikey knew his dad would be excited to see that one.
It was a good fifteen minutes until the more upbeat songs began again, and Mikey was already excited to get back to dancing. He heard a small crack, and Evette tumbled down in her seat beside him, her brows knitting together. She reached down to her feet, checking her heal.
"Oh..." Mikey watched her remove one of her heels, it had snapped in two pieces, suddenly unsafe to walk on. A large frown appeared on his face.
"Oh wow! You went so hard that you broke your shoe!" She laughed, setting the heel next to her.
"I know! But... I didn't bring another pair. I cant go back with one heel..." Mikey deflated in his seat, not really wanting to go back to dancing without her. When Donnie patted his shell, asking him to go with them, he noticed the disappointment on their faces.
"Hey! What's wrong? They are gonna start playing the other songs now!" Evette showed him her shoe, and Donnie gasped.
"You broke your heel?!" Hannah peeked out from beside him, then Carly peeked out beside her.
"What. No way, let me see!" They handed her the heel, and Hannah shook her head with a bite of her lip.
"Oh no no, this won't do. Too much damage."
"I thought so." Evette was sinking in her seat, but Donnie sat up with a push of his glasses.
"Wait! Carly, didn't you bring extra shoes in your bag?" Carly snapped her finger, already going to reach for her backpack.
"You're right, I did. What size do you wear, Evette?" Evette was fiddling with her fingers, trying to see what she was doing.
"Uhm- about a size 6." Hannah sighed.
"That's perfect, Carly wears 6 and a half, that should be fine, right? Here- boys! Out of the way, this is a serious situation. Go over there and wait, she'll be with you guys in a minute!" Hannah shooed the two turtle boys off the bleachers, before going back to Carly and Evette, who had moved closer to them.
"You guys- it's ok! Don't you want to change your shoes too? It must hurt to dance in heels?" Carly let out a huff of breath, pulling out some flats from her backpack.
"Tell me about it. But I don't mind at all, us girls have to look out for each other, yeah?" She placed the flat shoes onto her lap. "Sorry they don't match with your dress though, most of my stuff is just black. But they are comfortable to wear! You can go crazy in these."
"Yeah, you'll be able to have fun with your date~" Hannah gave her a wink, and Evette went red. She slipped on the shoes, setting her other heel aside. There was a bit of space at the tips of her toes, but nothing too dramatic.
"It's like a perfect fit! Awesome, looks like we saved the day."
"You go have fun with him, ok? We'll leave you guys alone now. Don told us how you got the guts to ask him out tonight, you go enjoy yourself." Carly bumped her shoulder, wanting to push some confidence into her. Hannah held her hands.
"Yeah. Also, just so you know, he hasn't looked twice at any other girl than you so far. You got this one in the bag, sis." Hannah pulled her up from her seat by her hands, carefully leading her off the bleachers. She gave her back a small push towards the dance floor.
"Go get your man- turtle... guy!" She laughed, Cody whistled through his fingers. She glanced to Ray, who held out two thumbs up with a grin. Evette snuck two thumbs up back to them, not looking where she was going and bumping straight into Donnie.
He turned to her, stopping his glasses from falling off his face. He looked around before leaning close to her, leading her to where Mikey was waiting.
"My brother is a little slow at times, sometimes he's head empty. No thoughts." Then he gave her a much lighter push in his direction, a small salute of his fingers.
"But I think it'll work out just fine for you!"
She stumbled over to Mikey, and he opened his arms in an effort to catch her. She landed against his chest, pulling the bottom of her dress down with a self conscious laugh. He got the memo, removing his suit's coat and handing it to her.
"Here! You can tie it around your waist! You know- for like... extra layers, or something." He was too embarrassed to explain it any further, but luckily she understood what he meant. She tied his coat around her waist, now wishing she had worn some sort of leggings. Mikey looked down at her feet, a smile spreading on his face.
"The shoes fit?"
"Yeah! They are really comfy too!" He clapped his hands together, getting excited again. Evette held onto his hands, a spur of confidence in her chest as she pulled him back to the center of the floor.
"Come on! I really like this song!" Mikey let himself be pulled, watching the way the colorful lights in the room painted on her face and skin. He didn't want her to let go.
"No way! Me too, I love Beyoncé!"
"I know!"
So they spent most of the night dancing. Evette found out that Mikey knew the whole choreography to 'Single Ladies', and he absolutely ate up the entire dance floor with that one. She got most of it on video, promising to send it to him so he could show Mondo.
They also danced to Super Bass, and Mikey watched Evette pop her chest to the music. She was a fan of Nicki?! She should have told him this a long time ago! A few people shoved them closer together, but they were too busy dancing to react in any way.
Mikey was in the middle of showing her an epic breakdance move when the music suddenly fizzled out to static. He turned towards the DJ, who held up a microphone to his mouth.
"GLITTER CANONS!"
Mikey has never seen a crowd of young teens go more wild in his life. The canons at every corner of the gym shot out large sprays of glitter, some of the students getting coated from head to toe. The loud popping noise they made had him jump back on his feet, and suddenly the students around him were screaming, he noticed some of them had small poppers in their hands.
He turned to Evette, watching her pull out a cylinder tube from behind her back, and he gasped. He brought his hands up to shield his face.
"Where did you get that?!" She grinned, pointing to the front door of the gym where a large tub was set next to it. He wondered what was in there when they first walked on, he now knew the answer.
"Wait! Wait! Not fair, I didn't grab one! Nobody told me there was glitter poppers!" She showed no sign of mercy, pulling back a string and watching a ball of glitter pop in Mikey's face. A few of the students near him did it as well, and now his back was covered in glitter dust.
Evette was losing it now. She covered her mouth with her hands, Mikey was shaking his head, but the glitter was sticking to his green body. He was sure a single shower after tonight would do nothing to get it off. He sought for revenge, stealing one of the poppers from a student he knew.
"Hey! Get your own, Michael!"
"Sorry, I'm borrowing this! My date chose war tonight!" He aimed the tip of the popper at her, and she tried to duck for cover. It was too late, the glitter exploded into her hair, mixing in with the gold glitter of her dress. She gasped, watching glitter fall down her arms.
"Mikey!"
"You did it first!"
"Hey, Michael! Evette, I don't think either of you got enough glitter on you." That was one of their theater classmates. He was holding two poppers in his hands, aimed straight for them. Mikey took one look at Evette.
"We make a run for it?" She nodded, and he pressed his hand to her back, leading her out of the entrance of the gym. They were laughing amongst themselves as their classmate chased them down, Evette almost tripped over the doorframe, but Mikey caught her.
"Who's idea was it to add glitter canons!" She laughed, running along the gym walls with him.
"I don't know, it was posted on the school's page!"
"The what?!" But it was too late to explain anything further, their classmates had cornered them. Mikey and Evette had both drowned in a pool of glitter outside of the gym.
"This is never going to come off!" Mikey screamed, Evette was shaking her head, glitter falling below her.
"Good! That's the point!" The students were laughing together. Mikey would be throwing a fit, but he was just laughing harder when he looked at Evette's face, glitter stuck in her lashes and bangs.
"We look terrible!"
"My mom's gonna be so mad!" But she was laughing too, so now they joined the circle of students, wheezing out at the mess everyone had become.
