Chapter Text
*** (Captain)
It starts with a click. Several clicks, to be exact, someone is clearly not doing their job at that very moment as well as risking to get the company’s assets damaged. Or worse – broken. Because why would one even need to click their pen at that pace if they were doing something, anything work-related? The Captain does not think so.
Unless.
He freezes in his tracks, just as he was about to pass the neat lines of cubicles, checked them just this morning, he did, the positioning is perfectly symmetrical to promote corporate culture. He, certainly, appreciated the structural nuances since they directly affected the employees’ morale, hence, contributing to the business or providing hindrances to the operations. It was his job as ranking–
Well. Not an officer anymore ever since he was retired following an injury. But still, he was an officer in a way. An inspector, if he may, sounded quite alright all things considered.
Click!
The clicking doesn’t cease, however. Short snaps of the pen, then longer ones – it couldn’t be, now, could it? The Captain couldn’t quite believe it at first, yet the more he listens, the more he’s sure of it. Morse code.
“Now, why would anyone,” quietly muses the Captain to himself, “resolve to send messages in such a manner?”
He appreciates the gesture – it’s the thought behind it that he can’t quite grasp. The Captain disapproves of texting, the unreliable and unsafe thing that is where anyone is likely to read your personal correspondence. However, he’s fairly aware that in that belief he’s quite alone. Or so he thought before this day. Before this second when he entered the office and stopped barely getting past the first neat line of cubicles.
Fascinating.
*** (Patrick)
Pat clicks his pen because he’s bored. Or because he hates his job. Or because it’s boring and that’s why he hates his job, certainly wasn’t his first choice after the radio station he worked at got downsized. Netflix and YouTube, eh, no one seems to care much for the radio broadcasts these days!
Ugh. Pat hates his new job and the cubicles they are stuck in. He grabs his pen from the desk and clicks it. Just once. Uh? The sound seems to remind him of something. Something…
Patrick frowns and clicks it again. And again.
“Hey, this is actually…” – he doesn’t finish out loud getting a pointed stare from the other side of the cubicle. “Sorry, Fanny,” he mouths regardless that she’s turned away already.
Huh. The pen, however. Now, the pen is now interesting, and this day couldn’t have been less boring seconds ago! So Patrick clicks again. A long one, a short one, a pause.
“Brilliant,” he grins.
Another pointed look from accounting, and he might be out.
“Sorry!”
Pat clicks the pen again. Who knew you could click out Morse code?..
