You've Told Your Parents?

Summary:

Follow-up to "When The Nights Are Long They'll Be Easier Together".
----------
“¿Evan durmió bien?” (Did Evan sleep well?) Eddie froze. Did his father know something? Had he heard them last night? He hadn’t come out to any of his family, too much Catholic guilt in that house to do so. Plus, while he’d been living at home, he’d been with Shannon, so the topic had never come up.

“How should I know?” He muttered as Ramon sat the mug in front of him. “I haven’t seen him yet.” His father just gave him one of those looks, the one that said “bullshit”. He didn’t say it out loud, but Eddie knew what he meant.

Work Text:

Eddie left Buck to sleep the next morning and ambled down to the kitchen, half-expecting everyone else to be sat around the table, but when he got there, the only person there was his father, who had just started making the coffee.

“Edmundo, café?” He asked gruffly, and Eddie managed to grunt out a “yes” as he sat on the nearest chair. “Black, one sugar.”

“Recuerdo.” Ramon replied, and Eddie glanced at him worriedly. Why was he speaking in Spanish suddenly?

Papá, ¿estás bien?” Had he had some sort of stroke? Watching him pour the coffee into the mugs, he discarded that theory. He wasn’t slurring, he was using both his hands, there was no weakness there.

“¿Si porque?” Why? Why? Because his father literally only spoke in Spanish to his older relatives, the ones that had English as a second language, and were more comfortable speaking in their native tongue. He had never, ever had a conversation in the language with him, or any of his sisters, that he knew of. "No quiero que tus amigos escuchen.” (I don’t want your friends to hear) Ramon tried to explain.

“Do you think I am estúpido, Edmundo ?” His voice was quiet, almost too quiet for even Eddie to hear. “Let me tell you something. When you get to my age, you do not sleep all night. You have to get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Last night, I passed Sophia’s room and the bed was empty. And I know that your friend Henrietta has a wife, so I’m guessing he wasn’t there. So, where did he sleep, son?” Eddie just stared into his coffee, wrapping his hands around the mug to stop them from fidgeting.

“Dad, I...” He started, then let out a breath.

“I overheard him talking to your mother last night when they were making dinner. She asked him how long he’d loved you, and he said two years. So, now will you tell me?” Eddie’s head shot up at his father’s words.

“I love him too.” He eventually whispered. “I, um...I’m bisexual, dad, and I fell in love with him." He confessed, awaiting for the fallout. The yelling, the name-calling, the looks of disgust that his son could ever fall in love with another man. That it wasn’t natural, that Christopher should have a mother and a father, not two fathers. But it didn’t come. Just a wistful sigh and his hand over his son’s. He opened his mouth to say something, but then just cleared his throat and nodded towards the door, behind Eddie. Craning his head to look, he watched as Buck walked in and sat in the chair beside Eddie.

“Hey.” Eddie murmured, a dopey grin on his face at the sight of the, unfortunately, now fully clothed man. “Didn’t want to wake you.” Buck’s eyes flicked at Ramon, who gave him a fond smile.

“Coffee, hijo?” He asked, scraping his chair on the tiles, but Eddie stood up before him and assured his father that he’d get it. Buck was very particular about his coffee, and only he could make it correctly.

“Isn’t that right, mi amor?” He asked, leaning down and kissing the top of his head, his soft curls ticking Eddie’s nose.

“Right. Sorry, Mr. Diaz, your son is right. He looks after me well.” He smiled, silently groaning as Eddie stepped away. “And I promise I’ll look after him, too.”

“I know you will. My sister has told me what a good man you are. Now if you’ll excuse me, I am going to get out of these pyjamas and into my clothes. Plenty to do today in the garden. I would appreciate some help if you boys would like to.” Ramon hinted. Eddie knew it wasn’t so much of a suggestion as an order, so he nodded and assured his father they’d give him a hand after breakfast.

Once they were alone, Buck stood up from his chair and crept over to Eddie, wrapping his arms around his waist and kissing him on the cheek as he made the coffee.

“You’ve told your parents?” He murmured.

“Just dad. And he’ll tell mom. But it’s your fault, you left your door open last night, he passed and you weren’t there.”

“How is that my fault? I said I’d go back but you wouldn’t let me.” He reminded Eddie, who sighed, knowing that Buck was right, for once.

“And you told my mom you were in love with me.” He countered.

“Well she caught me staring at your ass, what can I say?” Eddie snickered as he stirred the coffee in front of him, and in reply, Buck placed his hand on Eddie’s ass and gave it a squeeze.

“I’m guessing you got your charger last night, Buckaroo...and by the looks of it, a whole lot more.” Hen’s voice came from behind them, and Eddie felt himself blush as Buck untangled his arms from his waist and turned around.

“That’s between me and Buck.” Eddie smiled, staring at the crack in the tile in front of him.

“Nah, we can tell her if she really wants to know all the details...” Buck grinned. “And I mean every detail.” He started, turning back round and grabbing his coffee, taking the opportunity to steal a kiss on the lips as he did.

“Please don’t! And don’t tell me you two are going to be like this the whole way back to LA!” She shrieked, and Buck laughed.

“Nah, only when you’re driving.” Eddie shot back. “Can’t kiss and drive at the same time.”

“Great, I’m calling Bobby to ask if I can fly.” She murmured jokingly as the two of them sat back in their chairs. “In fact, no I’m not, because I’m not entirely sure that Buck 1.0 is completely gone.” Eddie had heard enough about Buck 1.0 to know what Hen was talking about, and made a mental note to tell Buck that under no circumstances was he going to risk his job by stealing the rig to have sex in it. Now, on the roof, or in the showers, or in the supply closet that locked from the inside, now those would all be fair game, he thought as he grinned at Buck, who looked at him confused, but smiled back and reached under the table for his hand. Their fingers intertwined, Buck used his thumb to trace patterns on the back of Eddie’s hand. A simple “I love you” without speaking. Eddie squeezed Buck’s hand ever so slightly. “I love you too.”
