Work Text:
Kambe Daisuke stared at Haru, his heart beating rather fast. The man looked ethereal, even though he was dressed in that same old Beige jacket of his.
He had fallen asleep, his shoulders slumped into a fetal position- his hair falling on his face made it seem like he wore a halo above his head.
They had an argument prior- which led to Kambe leaving once Haru screamed at him for bribing some drug dealers to provide intel.
He attempted to wake Haru up- "Katou-san?" Not a single stirring or movement from the man usually on high alert like he would get attacked any second. Putting his hands on his shoulders he ruffled his hair slightly, just below- his fingers brushed with his forehead. And that's when he realized- his forehead was burning fire. Katou had a fever.
He sighed- given his hectic lifestyle, this was to be expected, of course. He was not surprised at all.
(And yet, his heart ached, worry nuzzled him at the thought of Haru suffering with a fever that left his body with a temperature so high he was burning.)
"HEUSC." He commands. "Arrange the best pharmaceutical company in Tokyo currently to drop off their best doctor and their team on site with necessary precautions for a patient with a high fever. Include that required payments be already made."
"Understood, Daisuke-sama." HEUSC said in his sleek, monitored tone.
Kambe waited- sitting on the chair next to the desk Katou was sprawled on. He kept looking at him, shaking his head. "You are far too reckless. You need to care for yourself." Kambe said, his tone gentle in a manner he found himself being surprised at.
Katou shivered slightly- and he shaked vigorously for a few seconds as if he was very cold and disoriented. Kambe immediately took off his coat and wrapped it around the older man. "What will I ever do with your reckless, careless self?" He sighed, exasperated.
Putting his hand on his forehead at the lack of response, he realized Katou's fever had only increased. He was burning up. Panic dwelled on Kambe, "Haru?" he shook him rather with too much force than he intended to.
"Daisuke." is all Haru can manage, which came off very slurred though, much to Kambe's dismay.
"How far is the ambulance?" Kambe asked, his hands shaking at Haru's voice being slurred.
"Estimated Time of Arrival: 30 minutes."
"Make sure the Traffic police creates a traffic for every vehicle on the street today so that the Ambulance can pass through. Make as much as reimbursement as they want."
"Understood, Daisuke-sama."
"Ugh, you have got me panicking." Daisuke said, shaking his head fondly and some tears residue at the corner of his eyes- Katou's nose scrunched at that. And that made Daisuke smile just a little.
Just a few seconds later, HEUSC states, "Ambulance has arrived in 5 minutes following the steps Daisuke-sama instructed earlier."
"Thanks, HEUSC." Kambe said softly as the medics with their team entered the TMPD room. "You must be Mr. Kambe Daisuke right?
" Yes, that's right"
"Greetings, sir. I am Dr. Nakamura Shouji. How may I assist you?"
"My partner there," Daisuke said pointing at Haru, "has a very high fever. The fever is rather very high. I believe he must be relocated to a hospital as soon as possible."
"Alright, sir. We will do that. Rest assured, your partner will be provided the best care and support by our staff.", the medic said approaching Haru.
" Thank you." Kambe said, moving away from Katou.
Putting his hand on Haru's forehead, he ushered the other medics to bring in a stretcher.
Kambe's stomach was in knots with anxiety.
When he makes sure Katou is safely taken by the ambulance, he calls Suzue, "hey."
"Daisuke-sama what's up?"
"Katou. It's Katou."
"What happened to him?" Suzue asked through the phone, her voice laced with concern.
"He has a fever. And I- I sent him to a hospital."
"I am so sorry to hear that Daisuke-sama. I am sure the medical staff with care for him. Please stay strong, he will be fine."
"Yes, I hope so. I called to inform I will be at the hospital till the day he is released by his side."
"Understood, Daisuke-sama. You don't have to worry one bit about work. Me, Mahoro-chan and Kamei-san will take care of everything. You can count on us."
"Thank you Suzue, goodbye. I'll go now."
"Goodbye, Daisuke-sama. Take care of him and yourself. Ask HEUSC to mail me the address of the hospital, please!"
"Will do," Daisuke said and made HEUSC send in the address as he drove to the hospital.

When Haru woke up, he was to say the least, pissed. "Kambe!" He snarled, shaking, looking at the IVs and needles perched on his skin. "Was this necessary?"
"You had an acute case of pneumonia, so yes you being admitted was necessary." Kambe said, blankly. (Though on the inside he was seething at the recklessness of the man before him.)
"Well, whatever. Pretty sure this could have been treated with some saline. There was no need to waste one whole working day and God knows how many over some stupid feve-"
"Shut up." Kambe said, abruptly, and seriously. A pin-drop silence ensued as Katou was stunned at his tone.
"Doctors said," Kambe said, inching closer to Katou, "you have had the fever for roughly two days- How dare you? How dare you, not take care of your health?"
Katou was shocked at the sudden outburst. To hear Kambe shout was something new, and he was so seriously concerned and so genuine Katou's heart fluttered.
"What if." Kambe's ocean blue eyes pierced into his warm brown eyes as he said, "what if your condition worsened and no one was at the office? Given your tendency to self sabotage, what if your condition worsened? And God forbid- something severe happened?"
"Daisuke…" Katou said, weakly. Averting his eyes he whispered rather self deprecatingly "If something were to happen, who would remember?"
"Really, Katou? I would care. I would care and you know- nevermind. I more than care.."
"I… I am sorry, Kambe. I realize, I have been too careless. It's too hard you know? Being in your thirties with no major life goal or life events- trailing down rabbit holes with chases after chases is what keeps me sane. I wouldn't have it any other way."
"I wouldn’t have it any other way either, Katou-san." He said. "Every rabbit hole you go down stumbling, I will be right there for you. I'll be there to venture every mystery there is to solve. But for that, to uncover the wonderland you need to take care of yourself."
"I will." Katou said, reassuringly.
"You say so every time and you never do so." Kambe said.
"But-"
"The deal is, Katou- I brought the entire TMPD. For you. So that you do not have to be insulted for chasing every rabbit hole that is considered pointless chasing. Yet, you dont take things at your own pace, you jump headfast, careless."
"Okay, how dare you-"
"Haru, look. We can argue some other day over how I should be considerate with my finances- that is of less significance. But what really is important is." Kambe said, interlocking his fingers with Katou's. "Is that you are inconsiderate of your own safety- and thus proving you do not consider me important as well. Disregarding yourself is the same as disregarding me- us, your friends and family too."
"I am sorry, Kambe." Haru said, his voice soft. "I am so glad you care, you know? Your concern, I am so glad you voiced it. It means so much to me."
"Me being concerned is the least you deserve. You deserve so much more."
"I'll be careful next time."
"You are not allowed to say, 'next time.' Starting today, starting now actually- we will consume only balanced food according to the food chart by your assigned nutritionist."
"Ughhh, fancy salads and stupid veggies."
"Shut up. Fancy salads in exchange for closed cold cases every three months for you to solve."
"1 month, Kambe. You and I both know if I probe around to solve a case it will take me less than a month."
"No."
"Kambeee." Haru whined. "Fine, 2 months?"
"No."
"Ugh. 2.5?"
"No, no and no. You will go about cases in a healthy manner without jumping headfast and I will make sure of it."
"Heh. We both know cases find me, I don't find them. So yeah, your opinions are irrelevant." Katou grumbles, and slightly puffs his cheeks.
Such an adorable 30 year old, Kambe mused.
He hummed, satisfied and poured water over the cup from the jug on the table and handed it to Haru.
Haru held his hands instead and smilingly, he said, "you have been rather….considerate. Kinder. "
Kambe smiled back.
"So, what's your agenda, Kambe? Surely there's a catch? An investment? "
"Well, that's for you to figure out, Detective Extraordinaire. Think over it well, come to a well rounded conclusion. Then inform me."
Katou hummed,"Hm."
"I must leave now. Sayonara. I'll be back in a while. Eat. Don't fight off doctors."
"I can't promise that."
"I'll be watching you." Kambe remarks, putting his coat on.
"Pervert." Katou growls.
Kambe only smirked and left, a blush coated on his cheeks. He was smiling at every passerby that day.
