Work Text:

“you say it’s the little inconveniences that make you an adult, right nanamin?” yuuji says as they walk, one day. “but what about the little positives? seeing the person you like wear your favorite color, or… uh… maybe the bread that went out of stock gets re…stocked- say, nanamin, what is your favorite color? y’know, it’s funny, ‘cause, like, i don’t know fushiguro’s favorite color either. it’s probably green. or something like that.”

“blue,” says nanami, shortly. he doesn’t elaborate, only adding “like the summer sky.”

“like gojo-san’s eyes,” yuuji muses, then wilts after nanami gives him a sharp look. “i’m not implying anything,” he whines, and nanami certainly hopes he isn’t. gojo’s still clinging on to their past. nanami can’t say he isn’t doing the same, but it leaves little in the area of affections. “it’s like… it’s not your favorite color because of that. but you get to see your favorite color in everyone, you know? you see it in all the little things and doesn’t it make you happy?”

yuuji keeps rambling on even as the two of them stop at the crepe stall and order two — strawberry cream for yuuji and matcha with pear for nanami. yuuji berates him briefly for this combination, and returns to his color speech.

“like, my favorite color is gold,” yuuji continues through a mouthful of crepe. “like your hair, nanami-san! and the sun at five o’ clock and the edges of fushiguro’s eyes-” he cuts himself off, reddening. he takes another large bite of his crepe. “you know what i mean!”

nanami hums, pointedly swallowing the last bite of crepe before speaking. “mm. what does gold remind you of, yuuji-kun? not where you see it. what it reminds you of.”

“ehh…” yuuji makes a face. “is that important?”

“it can’t possibly be your favorite just because you see it in fushiguro-kun’s eyes,” nanami says pointedly, and yuuji flushes an even deeper red. “shouldn’t there be another reason? everything that makes its way into your life should have a reason to be there.”

“not really,” yuuji says after much thought. he wrinkles his nose slightly. “i mean, you could be right, but i just like it. it’s not really wrong to like something just because. why, does blue remind you of anything, nanamin?”

nanami stops and sighs, briefly closing his eyes. blue summer, awkward first-years. an effervescent senior, his quieter companion. “summer,” he says finally, after a long pause. “summer, rain. rays of the sun resting on plants.” he continues walking, and yuuji has to hurry to keep up with his long strides.

“that’s really poetic of you, nanamin,” he grins, finishing off his crepe. “maybe i’ll find a cooler reason to like gold, then!”

nanami pushes his glasses up on the bridge of his nose. “don’t forget we’re here on a mission, itadori-kun. grade 1 curse. let’s see how well you can do.” he points his wrapped blade at the vaguely pulsating creature in the shadows — he watches yuuji get into a fighting stance, radiating cursed energy, and thinks maybe pink isn’t such a terrible color either.
