Chapter Text
Today was like every other day, except it really was not, and Phoenix Wright was dying inside. Today would be the day he proposed to the love of his life, Miles Edgeworth.
The spiky-haired man paced back and forth in his office, the weight of the ring box burning a hole in his pocket. His usually boisterous demeanour was subdued, replaced by a nervous energy that made every tick of the clock echo through the room. Today was supposed to be like every other day, but it held the weight of an entire lifetime in a single moment.
He couldn't shake the anticipation coursing through him. The words he rehearsed felt foreign on his tongue, and his heart raced at the mere thought of the upcoming proposal. It wasn't just about popping the question; it was about professing a love that had withstood trials, a connection that had deepened through shared victories and defeats.
The sun cast a warm glow through the window, painting the room in hues of amber and gold. It felt like the universe was conspiring with Phoenix. It was as if nature itself was encouraging him to take this leap and seize the moment.
Phoenix's fingers traced the edge of the ring box, the metal cool against his skin. He pictured Miles' reaction, that subtle yet unmistakable smile that graced his face whenever they shared a moment of genuine connection. It was that smile he longed to see today, a smile that would make this nerve-wracking wait worthwhile.
For Phoenix, it wasn't just about the grand gesture; it was about the perfect timing. He felt it in the air, sensed it in the rhythm of their conversations, and saw it in the way Miles looked at him. This was the moment to solidify their future, to weave their lives together in a promise of eternity.
Taking a deep breath, Phoenix straightened his tie, trying to muster the courage he knew he possessed somewhere within. He glanced at a picture on his desk. It was a beautiful picture of his entire family.
It was Sebastian's graduation, and everyone showed up in support of him. On the left were his daughters Kay and Trucy (Kay was basically a daughter to him) followed by Miles and himself on the other side, sandwiching Sebastian in the middle. Apollo, Athena, Klavier and Raymond were all assorted in various angles of the photo, Raymond of course feeling the need to pose directly in front of Sebastian. Kay gave him a mouthful for that afterwards.
Phoenix could not help but let out a chuckle while looking at the photo. It was a reminder of all they had been through and all they could be. He was truly thankful for his found family.
Unbeknownst to Phoenix, his employees, Apollo and Athena were watching him through the window on his door that led to his office.
“Do you think Mr. Wright’s finally gone insane?” Athena asked the shorter man.
“I don’t really want to assume anything, but he has been pacing around that room for over an hour. But, honestly knowing him that's probably normal behaviour,” Apollo took a swig of his coffee and continued staring at Phoenix.
Athena leaned against the door frame, her eyes fixed on Phoenix. "I mean, Mr. Wright has a flair for the dramatic. Who knows, maybe he's planning a surprise defence strategy for a case or concocting a new 'Objection!' pose."
Apollo chuckled, shaking his head. "Knowing him, he could be rehearsing a speech about the importance of finger-pointing in court."
They both shared a laugh over that absurd idea. They then both went back to watching their boss until Athena seemed to have finally cracked the code on what was causing their boss so much distress.
Athena leaned in closer to Apollo, her eyes wide with mischief. "Hey, do you think Mr. Wright's been hit with some troll magic?"
Apollo raised an eyebrow, trying to stifle a laugh. "Troll magic? Seriously?" He placed his finished coffee mug down to provide his full attention to whatever astounding idea Athena had come up with.
"Think about it! Last night, he might've watched the new 'Trolls movie with Trucy, and maybe the glitter and happy tunes got to him!" Athena said, waving her hands in the air, imitating the exuberant characters from the movie.
Apollo could not help but chuckle at his co-workers' outlandish ideas.
“Apollo, please do not laugh. This is a very serious matter!” Athena glared at the shorter man who did not realize this was an important moment.
“Oh, sorry, I didn’t know you were being serious…”
Athena stared at the man for a little longer, which caused him to stare back at her uncomfortably before she burst out into laughter.
“Of course, I’m not being serious, you big lug!” Athena giggled at the expense of the other defence attorney, who was not happy with being laughed at.
“Haha, very funny, Athena. You got me good. So, what, you're saying that he’s pacing around the office because he’s been hit with troll magic?"
"Exactly!" Athena put her hands into fists and looked as though stars were going to form in her eyes. "And maybe he's trying to figure out the perfect 'hair-up' dance move!"
"Or he's secretly crafting a troll-inspired defence strategy. 'Your Honor, my client may have a bad hair day, but their happiness is protected under the Constitution!'" Apollo joked, mimicking Phoenix's courtroom dramatics.
They both burst into laughter, imagining their boss incorporating troll-themed arguments into court. Despite the absurdity of their conversation, it eased the tension lingering around Phoenix's unusual behaviour.
"Okay, okay," Athena said between giggles. "But seriously, he might just be planning something big. Remember, this is Mr. Wright we're talking about. His weirdness always has a purpose."
They had both gotten serious now and felt comradery towards their boss. Well, that’s what they thought until Apollo had to get one more joke in.
Apollo nodded, still grinning. "Yeah, you're right. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if he shows up with a glitter wig and starts handing out troll dolls in court!"
They once again burst out into laughter. Their playful banter provided a moment of lightness, easing the worry they felt about Phoenix's unusual demeanour. Deep down, they knew their boss was unpredictable but always managed to surprise them in the best possible ways.
Amidst their laughter, another presence had entered the room.
“Hey guys! What are you both laughing about?” Trucy asked as she tilted her head to the side.
"Hey, Trucy!" Athena greeted with a grin, trying to stifle her laughter. "We were just... speculating about Mr. Wright's mysterious behaviour today."
Trucy's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Ooh, is Daddy up to something again? Did he find a secret compartment in his office filled with bunnies or something?"
Apollo chuckled. "Not yet, but we're convinced he might surprise us with a troll-inspired courtroom appearance."
Trucy's expression shifted to one of sheer amusement. "Troll-inspired court? That sounds like a Dad thing to do. But hey, if he starts wearing a glitter wig, I've got the perfect matching cape for him!"
“I was just talking about a glitter wig, Truce! We have the same mind,” Apollo stated to the young magician as he patted her shoulder.
“Real sees real Apollo! And, honestly, glitter wigs just seem like a Daddy thing to do. Arts and crafts and all the jist,” Trucy laughed, and the pair joined in.
Athena grinned. "That would definitely make court sessions more... colourful."
Trucy turned to Apollo, nudging him playfully. "So, where did this idea of trolls even come from?"
"Apparently, according to Athena's theory, Mr. Wright might be under the spell of troll magic. He's been acting a bit off, you know?"
Trucy nodded a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Hmm, maybe he's plotting a grand illusion to surprise us all! Or maybe he just found my secret stash of cash that he doesn’t recall having!"
As they exchanged playful theories about Phoenix's behaviour, Trucy's infectious energy brought a sense of warmth to the room. Despite the uncertainty surrounding their boss's antics, their shared laughter and togetherness made the moment lighthearted and fun.
The laughter in the room gradually subsided as the door to Phoenix's office creaked open. He emerged, wearing his usual composed expression, though there was a hint of curiosity in his eyes. "What's all the laughing about, guys?"
Athena, Apollo, and Trucy exchanged quick glances, a momentary pause hanging in the air as they searched for a response. It was as if they had been caught in the middle of a secret they weren't quite ready to reveal.
"Oh! Hi Daddy, uh, it was just... a funny video of Mikeko that Apollo took yesterday," Trucy quickly improvised, flashing a bright smile.
Athena nodded vigorously. "Yeah, a really silly cat video! You know how those always get us laughing!"
"Absolutely, Mr. Wright. Just good ‘ol Mikeko being a silly cat!" Apollo jumped in, trying to keep a straight face.
Phoenix arched an eyebrow, a faint smirk dancing on his lips. "A video of your cat, huh? Well, as long as it's not affecting your work." He gave them a knowing look, “I am going to be leaving the office a little earlier to pick up something from the prosecutor's office. Do you guys want me to tell Edgeworth anything or perhaps pick you all some treats up?”
“Tell Papa that I say ‘I love you!’ and also could you pick up some doughnuts? Pretty please, Daddy!” Trucy gave him puppy dog eyes, which stifled a laugh out of her father who squished her cheek.
“Yeah, sure, I can do that. Athena, Apollo, anything you guys want to say?”
The pair looked at each other before looking back at their boss.
“Tell him we say hello,” They both said in unison, they had gotten better at freaking people out with that fun party trick.
Trucy and Phoenix shared a laugh over the pair's undoubtful charm. “Yeah sure, I can do that. I’ll pick up some extra doughnuts for the two of you as well. Well, I’m off now. Don’t get into any trouble,” Phoenix stated before picking up his coat and keys.
As the door closed behind him, the trio let out a collective sigh of relief, exchanging amused glances mixed with a tinge of nervousness.
"Phew, that was close!" Trucy exclaimed, shaking her head.
Athena giggled nervously. "I can't believe we got away with that!"
"Seriously, a cat video? We should consider a career in improv!" Apollo chuckled.
They shared a moment of silent laughter, relieved that their impromptu explanation had managed to divert Phoenix's suspicions. Yet, in the back of their minds, they wondered if their boss had seen through their ruse or if he was simply content to let them have their laughter-filled secret for the time being.
They had no clue what the real reason for their bosses' worrying was. With renewed determination, Phoenix pocketed the ring box, ready to face the uncertainty of the future with the unwavering hope that Miles would say yes.
The weight of the ring in his pocket grounded him, infusing him with a newfound sense of purpose. Today was the day he would take that leap of faith, trusting that their love was ready to weather any storm that came their way.
He navigated the bustling streets with a mix of determination and a touch of uncertainty, thoughts of his impending proposal swirling in his mind.
With each step, he felt the gravity of his decision and the depth of his emotions. The streets seemed alive with the energy of the city, bustling with people going about their day, completely unaware of the monumental moment unfolding within Phoenix's heart.
As he approached the prosecutor's office, a surge of nervousness washed over him. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for the encounter. This wasn't just about picking up something; it was about laying bare his heart to the person who meant the world to him.
Stepping into the prosecutor's office, Phoenix greeted the familiar surroundings with a mix of familiarity and a touch of apprehension. He quickly talked to Miles' secretary who let him go to his partner’s office. He made his way to the office, his heart pounding a bit faster with each step.
Knocking on the door, Phoenix hoped his composure didn't betray the torrent of emotions within him. "Miles, it's me," he called out.
The door opened, revealing Miles, who looked up with a hint of surprise. "Phoenix? What brings you here?"
"I, um... I came to pick something up, a document for an upcoming Trial. Oh, also before I forget, Trucy said to tell you she loves you," Phoenix said, trying to keep his tone casual despite the nerves threatening to overtake him.
Miles' eyebrow arched in amusement. "Trucy never fails to brighten my day. And what about you?"
A small smile tugged at Phoenix's lips. Miles wasn't just a friend or a lover; he was the anchor in Phoenix's tumultuous world. With an unwavering presence, Miles had been a constant through the highs and lows, a guiding light in moments of darkness. His intelligence, integrity, and unwavering dedication to justice were qualities that Phoenix had always admired.
But it was more than that. Miles held a special place in Phoenix's heart, a place reserved for someone who understood him in ways that surpassed words. Their bond was a blanket woven with years of shared experiences, victories, and occasional clashes that only strengthened their connection.
This was definitely the man he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. He was already imagining the wedding and future together.
"Oh, and, uh, Athena and Apollo say hello," Phoenix quickly blurted out, not knowing why he did that. His nerves were really getting to him, and he was nervous he was getting lost in his thoughts.
Miles chuckled, a glint of curiosity in his eyes. "That's quite the message. Is there anything else?"
Phoenix hesitated for a moment, his heart racing. This was it, the moment he had been preparing for. "Actually, there is something else." He reached into his pocket, feeling the weight of the ring box, and took a deep breath.
But before he could continue, a commotion outside the office caught their attention. Voices, laughter, and a sound that seemed unmistakably like a group of people entering the building interrupted the moment.
Miles glanced past Phoenix, a knowing look crossing his features.
"Ah, lunchtime is over. Everyone will now be coming in, and it will be quite noisy. This is my least favourite part of the day,” Miles sighed before looking back at his lover, “Sorry about that Wright, please come in, hopefully, we can talk better in my office.”
Phoenix's heart sank slightly at the interruption but nodded in understanding. "Of course, Edgeworth. Thank you for inviting me in."
As the noise grew louder outside the office, Phoenix’s mind swirled with a mixture of relief and slight disappointment. He entered the office, the moment postponed, but the determination to propose burning stronger within him.
Outside, he couldn't help but wonder if fate had intervened, delaying his proposal for a reason. Maybe this was a bad idea. Most people have elaborate proposals that consist of out loud and proud declarations of their love for their partner. Should Phoenix have thought of something more fancy? He can’t help but doubt himself.
Inside Miles Edgeworth's office, Phoenix felt the weight of missed opportunity pressed upon him. Doubt gnawed at the edges of his confidence, questioning if his simple, heartfelt proposal would ever be enough.
“Edgeworth, I... um, I needed to ask you about those procedural papers for the upcoming case,” Phoenix stammered, his voice wavering slightly. He struggled to maintain composure, attempting to redirect the conversation to business matters instead of the personal milestone he'd initially intended to cross.
Miles nodded, a hint of concern flashing across his face at Phoenix's sudden shift in demeanour. “Of course, Wright. They’re right here.” He reached for the papers on his desk, passing them to Phoenix. “Is everything alright? You seem... different today.”
Phoenix couldn't meet Miles' gaze, his mind still clouded with uncertainty. "Yeah, everything's fine. Just preoccupied with the case, you know how it goes."
Miles observed Phoenix for a moment, a subtle furrow forming on his brow, sensing something was amiss. However, respecting Phoenix's apparent discomfort, he didn't push further.
“Alright then, I understand how it can be. Take care of yourself, and if you need anything else, do let me know,” Miles offered with a tone of understanding.
“Thanks, Edgeworth,” Phoenix muttered, a sense of regret flooding his thoughts as he hastily gathered the papers. How does he get out of this situation now, the moment’s ruined, and now he's doubting if this proposal is what his lover would want. He needs to go home and re-evaluate how he’s going to do this.
"Oh my! Trucy's been bugging me about those doughnuts I mentioned. She's been calling non-stop, so I should probably head out now!" The spiky-haired man chuckled, his laugh slightly strained and punctuated by a nervous glance towards the door, a hint of unease shadowing his eyes.
Miles raised an eyebrow, his expression a mix of surprise and suspicion. "She's been calling you? I didn't hear your phone ring, and did you not tell her you were coming over to visit me? You’ve hardly been here for 20 minutes, and you already need to go?"
Phoenix felt a pang of guilt for the half-truth, but he pressed on, his mind scrambling for an excuse. "Oh, she's probably using that new silent ringtone thing she found. You know how teenagers are these days, always trying out new tech stuff. Well, I gotta go!" Phoenix applied a quick kiss on his partner’s cheek. With that, he hastily made his way out of the office, a whirlwind of doubt and indecision spinning within him.
As he stepped into the corridor, Phoenix couldn't shake off the sense of disappointment and self-doubt that gnawed at him. Doubt, combined with the fear of not measuring up to what he thought a proposal should be, had gripped him.
Walking briskly through the hallways, Phoenix felt a mix of frustration and regret. He'd missed an opportunity, a chance he'd meticulously planned but couldn't muster the courage to execute.
He found solace in the fabricated urgency of Trucy's fictional doughnut cravings, using it as an excuse to escape the situation. Yet, deep down, he knew he was just running away from his own insecurities and fears.
Phoenix leaned against the wall, taking a deep breath to steady his racing thoughts. The ring box weighed heavily in his pocket, a silent reminder of his unfinished intention. Regret filled him as he contemplated the missed chance, wondering if he'd ever gather the courage to try again. For now, he resolved to bury his doubts and muster the confidence for another moment, another opportunity to express his love for Miles in the way he truly wished.
He let out a heavy sigh before going to pick up those doughnuts he promised. He wonders how his employees and Trucy are doing.
At the Wright Anything Agency, Apollo, Athena, and Trucy were gathered around a table, engaged in a playful yet mischievous atmosphere.
"Okay, Apollo, here's the deal," Athena said, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Trucy, and I bet that you can't juggle these foam stress balls while wearing a blindfold!"
Trucy grinned, adding, "And we bet 20 dollars each! So it makes a whopping $40. You're up for the challenge, right, Polly?"
Apollo glanced between Athena and Trucy, his eyebrow raised skeptically. "Wait, seriously? Juggling blindfolded? Isn't that a bit... risky?"
"It's all in good fun, Apollo!" Trucy chirped, holding up the blindfold and the stress balls.
Athena nodded eagerly. "Yeah, come on! We've seen you do amazing things in court. This should be a piece of cake!"
Apollo hesitated, looking at the foam stress balls and the blindfold. He knew this was probably a bad idea, but the competitive glint in Athena and Trucy's eyes was hard to resist.
"Fine, but if anything gets broken, you two have to take the fall for me," Apollo said, and the two women nodded in agreement. He then accepted the challenge. He tied the blindfold securely around his eyes, took a deep breath, and began juggling the foam stress balls.
Athena and Trucy cheered him on, their laughter filling the room as they watched Apollo's valiant attempt at juggling while blindfolded. The stress balls bounced in unpredictable patterns, causing Apollo to fumble for a moment before catching them again.
"Almost there, Apollo! Keep going!" Athena encouraged, giggling.
Trucy added excitedly, "You got this, Polly! Don't let the blindfold defeat you!"
Despite the challenging task, Apollo managed to juggle the stress balls for a decent amount of time before one slipped from his grasp, causing the others to fall to the ground.
"Aww, so close!" Trucy exclaimed, pretending to be disappointed.
"Nice try, Apollo!" Athena chuckled, patting his back.
Apollo removed the blindfold, shaking his head with a grin. "Well, I tried. But hey, I'm not giving up my day job for a juggling career anytime soon."
As they laughed and bantered, the friendly camaraderie between the three of them filled the office with warmth and joy, momentarily overshadowing the worries and doubts that occupied Phoenix's mind elsewhere.
As the laughter settled from Apollo's blindfolded juggling attempt, Athena, caught up in the playful atmosphere, decided to add her own quirky twist to the moment.
"Okay, my turn!" Athena announced, scanning the room for inspiration. Her eyes landed on a stack of empty paper cups nearby. "I bet I can build the tallest tower using these paper cups in under a minute!"
Trucy's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Challenge accepted! You've got one minute, Athena!"
Athena hastily began stacking the cups, her fingers moving swiftly, as she assembled the tower. With each cup placed atop the other, the tower grew taller, but the seconds ticked away faster than anticipated.
"Thirty seconds left!" Trucy counted down, grinning from ear to ear.
Athena's focus intensified as she attempted to stabilize the wobbly tower. However, in her haste, the cups swayed precariously, threatening to collapse.
"Come on, Athena, you're almost there!" Apollo cheered, joining in the excitement.
With mere seconds remaining, Athena hurriedly placed the last cup atop the tower. For a brief moment, it stood tall and seemingly victorious. However, just as she lifted her hands in triumph, the tower tumbled down, cups scattering across the table.
The trio erupted into laughter, Athena included, despite her failed attempt. "Well, that didn't go as planned!" she exclaimed, chuckling as she gathered the fallen cups.
Trucy playfully patted Athena on the back. "Nice try, Athena! But I think the cups won this round."
Athena grinned, nodding in agreement. "The cups may have won, but I'll be back for a rematch! Next time, I'll conquer the tower challenge! Can you both quickly help me clean these cups up before Mr. Wright gets back? I know Mr. Wright doesn't get mad often, but I rather not be the reason he snaps."
“Yeah, no worries Athena,” Apollo said before they all started collecting the various cups scattered across the floor.
After they had cleaned up, Apollo and Athena looked towards Trucy. Signalling that it was now her turn. With a mischievous glint in their eyes, the young magician was feeling worried.
"Alright, I'm ready for your challenge! What's it going to be?" Trucy asked the pair of lawyers in front of her.
Athena exchanged a knowing glance with Apollo before she grinned mischievously. "Let's see... I bet you can't perform a magic trick that includes making one of those paper cups disappear and reappear somewhere else in the room!"
Trucy's eyes widened with excitement. "Oh, that's an easy one! Consider it done!" She took a moment, assessing the room, before pulling out her wand from seemingly nowhere.
With a flourish, she tapped the paper cup in front of her and whispered a few words. The trio watched in anticipation as she covered the cup with her hand and dramatically lifted it, only to reveal... it hadn't moved an inch.
Athena and Apollo exchanged amused glances, trying to stifle their laughter. "Looks like the cup didn't want to go on an adventure," Apollo teased the magician, who raised her eyebrow knowingly.
Trucy's expression turned thoughtful for a moment before she grinned mischievously. "Oh, you think so? But what if the cup was just hiding somewhere unexpected all along?"
She twirled her wand in the air, chanting a few more magic words, and pointed dramatically behind Apollo. When he turned around, a paper cup was mysteriously perched on the top of a bookshelf.
Athena and Apollo erupted into laughter, thoroughly impressed by Trucy's sleight of hand. "Okay, you got us there, Trucy! That was pretty magical," Athena exclaimed, applauding Trucy's quick thinking.
Trucy bowed theatrically. "Thank you, thank you! The great Trucy Wright never fails to amaze! I will be here all night!"
They once again cleaned up any miscellaneous things lying around and got back to working so as to not upset their boss. Trucy however kept them both company, asking about their cases and if she could assist them in court. How the judge allowed her to appear in court as an assistant still is mind-boggling. But, they think he just really likes her enthusiastic personality and thinks she adds a sort of joyous atmosphere.
As Phoenix walked back into the office with a box of assorted doughnuts, Apollo, Athena, and Trucy looked up expectantly, ready to greet him. However, the forced cheer in Phoenix's smile did not escape their notice.
"Daddy! You're back pretty quickly. How did it go?" Trucy chirped, eyeing his demeanour with concern.
Phoenix attempted to maintain his facade of normalcy. "Oh, you know, just the usual prosecutor's office visit. Everything's fine," he replied, though his tone lacked its usual conviction. But, he offered his daughter a smile as he pulled her cheek in normal father fashion.
"Are you sure everything's okay, Mr. Wright? You seem a little... off,” Athena observed him closely, her worry growing.
Apollo nodded in agreement. "Yeah, you're not your usual self. Did something happen at the prosecutor's office?"
Phoenix hesitated, glancing at the box of doughnuts before giving a small, forced chuckle. "Nah, nothing serious, just some case discussions. But, hey, I brought back some treats, dig in!"
Trucy's eyes sparkled at the sight of the doughnuts. "Ooh, doughnuts! Thanks, Daddy! You're the best!"
Despite their attempts to engage Phoenix in conversation, he seemed distant, lost in his thoughts, as he retreated to his office without much elaboration. Once inside, he let out a heavy sigh, the weight of his emotions becoming too burdensome to bear alone. Thoughts of self-deprecation and anger washed over him.
Outside, Apollo, Athena, and Trucy exchanged concerned glances, feeling the palpable shift in Phoenix's demeanour.
"Something doesn't feel right," Athena murmured, furrowing her brow.
"Yeah, it's like he's trying to hide something. Hopefully, everything went well between him and Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth," Apollo stated.
Trucy, ever the optimist, chimed in, "Maybe they just ran out of his favourite doughnut, and he's upset about it!"
Athena chuckled softly. "Could be, Trucy, but I think it might be something else. Maybe it's about a case or... something personal? Has he mentioned anything to you?”
“I don’t think so… everything was alright until now. But, he has seemed more nervous and jumpy lately. Sometimes I catch him stuck in thought, and it’s always in the most random places,” Trucy thought, putting her hand on her chin while she thought.
They continued to whisper speculations, their concern growing as they tried to decipher the mystery behind Phoenix's unusual behaviour. Despite their lighthearted guesses, the worry for their mentor and friend lingered beneath the surface.
In his office, Phoenix sat in silence, scared and nervous. Is he even enough for Miles Edgeworth? Could that be enough for him? He’s just some clumsy defence attorney while his lover was the Chief Prosecutor and an amazing one at that. Maybe Miles should be with someone smart and sophisticated, someone who is on his level of excellence. Because Phoenix knew that couldn’t be him.
Phoenix found himself consumed by self-doubt, his thoughts spiralling into a whirlwind of insecurity. He sat there, lost in a cascade of apprehensions, his mind a battleground of conflicting emotions.
"Maybe Miles deserves someone better than me," he murmured to himself, the weight of his self-criticism echoing in the empty room.
He glanced at the ring box nestled in his pocket, the symbol of his unspoken intentions. Yet, at that moment, it felt more like a testament to his inadequacy rather than a token of love and commitment.
"Could I really be what he needs?" Phoenix mused, his fingers tracing the edges of the box absently. He admired Miles' brilliance, his unwavering dedication to justice, and his refined demeanour, qualities that seemed galaxies away from his own perceived shortcomings.
"Maybe I should just forget about this," Phoenix whispered, the weight of his doubts pressing down on him. He wondered if it was better to spare himself the heartache of potential rejection, to protect himself from the possibility of not being enough for someone as remarkable as Miles.
The seconds stretched into minutes, each passing moment reinforcing Phoenix's internal struggle. He battled with his own insecurities, unsure whether to follow his heart's longing or to yield to the fears that threatened to overpower him.
Outside his office, Apollo, Athena, and Trucy shared their concerns, oblivious to the turmoil Phoenix was experiencing.
In that moment of solitude, Phoenix grapples with a pivotal decision, torn between his desire for Miles and the fear that he will never be an adequate enough partner. The weight of uncertainty hung heavy in the air, leaving Phoenix to navigate the storm of his own emotions, unsure of which path to choose.
In the midst of his inner hatred, Phoenix's thoughts were interrupted by a faint knock on his office door. Before he could respond, the door creaked open, revealing Athena cautiously peeking inside.
"Mr. Wright, can we come in?" she asked softly, exchanging a concerned glance with Apollo and Trucy, who stood just behind her.
Phoenix hesitated, unsure if he wanted to burden them with his problems. But seeing their genuine concern in their eyes, he managed a faint smile and nodded.
"Sure, come on in," he replied, his voice tinged with a hint of resignation.
As they entered, Apollo closed the door behind them, and they gathered around Phoenix's desk, their expressions a blend of worry and support.
"Is everything alright, Mr. Wright?" Athena inquired, her voice filled with genuine concern.
Phoenix hesitated for a moment, unsure of how much to reveal. He felt a lump form in his throat as he struggled to articulate his feelings. "I... I'm just dealing with a few personal thoughts, that's all."
Apollo stepped forward, his tone laced with empathy. "You've been acting a bit off since you came back. Is it something to do with Mr. Edgeworth?"
Trucy chimed in, her voice a mix of curiosity and concern. "Did you guys have a fight or something?"
Feeling the weight of their concern and sensing their genuine desire to support him, Phoenix took a deep breath, steeling himself to share the turmoil that had been consuming him.
"No, we did not fight. Actually, I... there's something I have been grappling with," he began, his voice betraying a hint of vulnerability. "I went to the prosecutor's office today to... to propose to Edgeworth."
A hushed silence filled the room, broken only by their collective gasps of surprise. Athena's eyes widened in excitement, Trucy's mouth formed a silent 'wow,' while Apollo's expression shifted from concern to genuine joy.
"You're proposing? That's amazing, Mr. Wright!" Athena exclaimed, unable to contain her excitement. She swept the spiky-haired man into a strong hug where she lifted him off the ground. Phoenix’s eyes widened when this happened. He still could not believe how strong she was despite the fact she mentioned going to the gym and being 5’10.
Trucy's eyes sparkled with enthusiasm as she also joined in on the hug. "Wow, Daddy! That's so romantic and exciting! He will officially be my Papa!"
“Congratulations, Mr. Wright! That's incredible news!" Apollo grinned, a glimmer of excitement in his eyes. He just applied a soft pat on his boss's shoulder, not feeling too comfortable hugging everyone.
Despite their initial shock, their faces lit up with warmth and encouragement, their eagerness palpable as they waited for Phoenix to continue.
"But..." Phoenix hesitated, his gaze dropping to the ring box in his hand. "I got scared. I backed out, and now I can't shake this feeling that maybe I'm not enough for him."
Athena placed a reassuring hand on her mentor’s shoulder. "Mr. Wright, you're more than enough. You and Mr. Edgeworth have been through so much together. He loves and respects you deeply! Even a kindergartener could see that you two are meant to be together."
"You're amazing, Daddy! You've faced impossible odds and come out on top! You are definitely enough for Papa!" Trucy chimed in, her voice filled with unwavering confidence in her father.
Apollo nodded, offering his support. "You're one of the most genuine people I know, Mr. Wright. You and Mr. Edgeworth make a great team."
“Wow, Apollo, great team. Could you be any less uncomfortable with gay people?” Athena shakes her head in disappointment.
“I am gay?! How am I showcasing signs of being uncomfortable? I am trying my best to still be a little professional!” Apollo crossed his arms at the statement made about him.
Trucy laughed at the pair in front of her, “Says the man who juggled stress balls at work, blindfolded, may I add.”
Athena and Trucy began laughing at Apollo, who had a frown on his face. Phoenix was incredibly confused but smiled at their carefree nature.
“I can’t believe you just outed me like that Trucy. You both said you would have my back. Now this feels like a hostile environment. Anyways, we are straying away from the conversation. Mr. Wright, you really need to believe in yourself. It is obvious to anyone with a pair of eyes that he wants to be with you forever. As Athena said, you two are meant for each other,” Apollo smiled at his boss, and Phoenix let out a soft sigh.
Their words of encouragement started to chip away at Phoenix's doubts. He looked up at them, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. "You really think so?"
"Absolutely!" Athena affirmed, her conviction unwavering. "And hey, we're all here for you. If you want any help or ideas for the proposal, we're game!"
Trucy's enthusiasm was contagious. "Ooh, we can brainstorm ideas! Maybe some magic could make it extra special! I’ll go get the whiteboard in the office area!" She said while running out the office door.
"We could help plan something grand or even just lend a hand with the details. Whatever you need, Mr. Wright,” Apollo chimed in, his mind already buzzing with possibilities.
Their collective excitement and unwavering support filled Phoenix's heart with a newfound determination. A small smile crept across his face, a glint of hope flickering in his eyes.
"Okay, then. Let's do this together," Phoenix said, a newfound resolve in his voice. "I want to make this special for him."
The room buzzed with excitement as they started brainstorming ideas, their collective energy focused on making the proposal a momentous occasion. Phoenix felt a surge of gratitude for their unwavering support, realizing that with his team by his side, maybe, just maybe, he could muster the courage to take that leap once more.
Miles Edgeworth sat in his office, a slight furrow on his brow as he puzzled over the odd behaviour of his partner, Phoenix Wright. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss—Phoenix's abrupt departure from his office earlier had left him puzzled. As he sat, his eyes wandered to his desk drawer, where a small velvet box lay hidden, holding a ring he'd been keeping for a special occasion.
Curiosity tugged at him, and with a sense of intuition, he gently pulled the drawer open, revealing the box nestled inside. He gazed at it for a moment, contemplating its significance. Could this be the day? Miles pondered, his mind racing with thoughts of a future he yearned for with Phoenix.
A knock on the door interrupted his reverie, and he quickly closed the drawer, tucking the ring safely inside. "Come in," he called out.
Detective Gumshoe stepped into the office, saluting in his usual awkward manner. "Uh, Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth, Sir! You called for me?"
Miles nodded, gesturing for Gumshoe to take a seat. "Yes, Detective. I wanted to ask you something." He paused, carefully choosing his words. "How did you propose to your wife, Maggey Byrde?"
Gumshoe's eyes widened in surprise. "Oh! Well, Sir, it's not really a grand story or anything. I'm not too good with words, you see."
Miles listened attentively as Gumshoe recounted the heartfelt yet clumsy proposal. The Detective's genuine sincerity touched Miles, resonating with the sincerity he himself felt towards Phoenix.
"It was a quiet evening, Sir," Gumshoe continued, a nostalgic smile gracing his face. "I didn't plan much. I just stumbled over my words and... it just sort of happened, but she said yes! I guess it was the genuine feeling that mattered most."
—
It was an ordinary evening in the bustling city, the twinkling lights casting a warm glow as Detective Dick Gumshoe nervously fumbled with his pocket, ensuring the small box was secure. He and Maggey had planned a quiet dinner at a cozy restaurant they both adored.
However, everything seemed to be going wrong that day. They couldn’t get a taxi which made them late for the reservation so they were not able to go to the restaurant, and It even began raining as they arrived. So, now with nowhere to go and the whole day ruined, he questioned whether or not he should even propose.
But, Maggey, beautiful, sweet and incredible, Maggey. She made everything seem alright.
“Don’t worry, Hunny! It’s not your fault,” She offered her partner a soft smile as she pulled her phone out, “I can look for some things around here that we can do instead. Oh! There’s a roller rink 5 minutes away from here. We could do that if you’d like!”
Even in the worst situations, she kept an optimistic outlook and reassured him that everything would be alright. He was so grateful for her, and he couldn’t handle that he was not married to the woman in front of him. He took a deep breath, steeling himself to express his heartfelt emotions.
"Maggey," he began, his voice trembling slightly. "I know I'm not great with words, and I might not say things the way others do, but..." He paused, meeting her eyes, which sparkled with curiosity and affection.
He got down on one knee on the disgusting and cold floor. Even if it was not the most romantic place to propose, he wanted to show Maggey how deeply in love he was with her. His cheeks flushed with emotion. "I've got something for you."
Maggey's eyes widened in surprise as Gumshoe opened the box, revealing a delicate ring, nestled inside. Her gasp of astonishment turned into a radiant smile.
"Dick, is this..." she trailed off, her voice filled with emotion.
He nodded, his heart pounding. "Maggey, I've stumbled through life in my own clumsy way, but every step has led me to you. You're my guiding light, my support, and my best friend. Will you make me the happiest man alive and spend the rest of your life with me?"
Tears welled up in Maggey's eyes as she nodded fervently. "Yes, Dick! A thousand times, yes!"
Gumshoe slipped the ring onto Maggey's finger, people walking by clapped for the two of them, and the happy couple thanked them for their support. Their laughter and happy tears filled the air as they embraced, surrounded by the warmth of their love and the joy of a future together.
It wasn't a grand gesture or a meticulously planned affair, but in that moment, amidst the cold and rainy weather and the shared love between them, Dick Gumshoe and Maggey Byrde embarked on a beautiful journey of love and commitment that would last a lifetime.
As Gumshoe's story unfolded, Miles couldn't help but draw parallels between their situations. His thoughts drifted back to the ring in his desk drawer, his heart racing with the prospect of a future with Phoenix.
"Thank you, Detective," Miles said, a subtle smile playing on his lips as he contemplated his feelings and the idea of proposing to Phoenix. "You've been most helpful."
Detective Gumshoe looked slightly perplexed, scratching his head as he tilted it to the side. "Um, Chief Prosecutor, Sir, I hope I didn't bore you with my story. I know you're not one for these kinds of things."
Miles gave a small, genuine smile. "On the contrary, Detective. Your story was quite insightful."
Gumshoe's eyes widened in surprise, clearly not expecting such a response from his typically stoic boss. "I-I'm glad to hear that, Sir! But, um, why did you wanna know about that, if you don't mind me asking?"
Miles hesitated for a moment, deliberating whether to share his thoughts. Finally, he spoke, his voice tinged with a hint of vulnerability. "I'm considering proposing to Wright, Detective."
Gumshoe's jaw practically dropped, his eyes widening in disbelief. Just a couple of years ago, the Detective was surprised to learn that the two men were in a loving relationship and taking care of Trucy together. He always felt like something was going on, but he never wanted to intrude.
"You're going to propose to Phoenix Wright, Sir?! Wow, that's... that's incredible news!" His excitement was palpable, his face lighting up in a huge grin. Gumshoe exclaimed, unable to contain his excitement. Without a second thought, he jumped out of his seat and lunged toward Miles, enveloping him in a massive bear hug.
"Congratulations, Sir!" Gumshoe boomed, his jubilation echoing through the room. "You and Mr. Wright will be the happiest couple ever!"
Miles, caught entirely off guard by the sudden bear hug, stiffened in surprise. "Gumshoe, put me down this instant!" he protested, his voice a mix of surprise and embarrassment. But Gumshoe was too caught up in his happiness to notice, his laughter drowning out Miles' plea.
"Sir, this is the best news ever!" Gumshoe exclaimed, his voice booming with excitement. "You've gotta tell me more about it. When's it happening? Are you going to do it grand or keep it simple?"
Miles tried to compose himself, attempting to gently extract himself from the bear hug. "Gumshoe, please, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but if you could please put me down so that I can breathe properly!"
"Oh! Yeah, of course. Sorry about that Chief Prosecutor, Sir! I just got so excited! The larger man said happily.
Despite the awkwardness of the moment, Miles couldn't help but crack a small smile at Gumshoe's uncontainable happiness. As Gumshoe finally released him from the bear hug, still beaming with joy, Miles let out a faint sigh of relief, grateful for the Detective's genuine support and ecstatic enthusiasm.
They both sat in their respective seats before delving back into conversation.
“So, Sir! Do you have anything special in mind?” The Detective asked with curiosity.
Miles thought for a moment with a neutral face before opening his mouth and speaking.
“I have no clue.”
“You have no clue? What do you mean you have no clue, Sir?”
“It’s exactly like I stated Detective. I have absolutely no clue how I will be proposing.”
The two men looked at one another with a blank expression. Neither of them were sure what the other was implying.
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU HAVE NO CLUE?!” Gumshoe yelled, and practically anyone in a 5-mile radius would be able to hear his howling.
Miles stuck his fingers in his ears to stop the ringing in his ears from the strength behind Gumshoes yelling. “Shh, Detective! I don’t want anyone else to know about this!”
“Sir, I respect you deeply. I would take a bullet for you and excuse my language here, Mr. Edgeworth, Sir, but this might be the silliest thing I have ever heard you say to me.”
As Miles raised an eyebrow, his composure remained unfazed, but a faint hint of amusement danced in his eyes at Gumshoe's exasperated reaction.
"I understand your concern, Detective, but sometimes the heart doesn't align with meticulous planning," Miles replied, his tone steady.
Gumshoe scratched his head, trying to comprehend the situation. "But Chief Prosecutor, this is... big! It's gotta be grand! It's gotta be special, like fireworks or a surprise on a yacht or something!"
Miles couldn't help but chuckle softly at Gumshoe's exaggerated suggestions. He did sometimes miss the times the two would work on a case together. Even if his time is now required somewhere else, he holds those memories close to his heart.
"I appreciate your enthusiasm, Gumshoe. However, sometimes simplicity can hold its own kind of magic. I just need to find the right moment."
Gumshoe's expression showed a mix of understanding and concern. "But, Sir, you two have been through so much, you know?"
Miles frowned slightly, puzzled. "What exactly are you implying, Detective?"
"It's just, you know," Gumshoe hesitated, struggling to articulate his thoughts.
"No, I don't know. That's why I'm asking," Miles insisted.
"You know," Gumshoe repeated, clearly grappling with how to explain.
The room felt tense, like a heavy fog of unspoken thoughts. Miles wanted clarity from Gumshoe's cryptic words, but the mystery remained, lingering in the air.
"I really don't, Detective. Please, enlighten me," Miles pressed, trying to decipher Gumshoe's cryptic hints. There was a little bit of annoyance behind his words, but he hoped the man in front of him was too naive to catch it.
“You two have such a history together. Childhood friends, to strangers, to rivals, to friends to one-sided crush to enemies to friends to best friends to strangers/enemies to friends to best friends to lovers, too–”
“Gumshoe, I am a very busy man. Get to your point already.”
"Yeah, sorry for overstepping. You both have so much going on it’s hard to keep track of, but considering everything you both have faced, wouldn't a grand gesture be more fitting to show how much you care? Not that a simple proposal wouldn't be amazing, but Mr. Wright might appreciate something a bit more–uhh–extravagant, you know?"
Miles pondered Gumshoe's words, his mind racing with conflicting thoughts. Perhaps he hadn't given enough thought to what Phoenix might truly desire in a proposal. What if Phoenix yearned for something more elaborate? The prospect of not meeting Phoenix's expectations in such a significant moment weighed heavily on Miles, sending his mind spiralling into anxious doubts. What if he hates the proposal? Miles was freaking out now!
Before he could dwell further, Gumshoe's interruption snapped him out of his reverie.
"Snap out of it, Sir! Don't let yourself freak out!" Gumshoe urged his voice a mix of concern and determination.
Taking a deep breath, Miles attempted to compose himself, the echo of Gumshoe's words reverberating in his mind. "You're right, Detective. I shouldn't let myself get overwhelmed."
"You're the Chief Prosecutor, sir. You've faced tougher things than planning a proposal!" His expression is a mix of reassurance and concern.
Miles managed a weak smile. "Thank you for your support, Detective. But I'm at a loss here."
"I think you know what's next, sir," Gumshoe suggested, a hint of mischief in his tone.
"I do?" Miles questioned, puzzled by Gumshoe's cryptic words.
"Yes, it's time for backup."
"No... You can't mean..."
"Yes, they're the missing piece in this puzzle."
The realization dawned on both men as they exchanged a resigned look, acknowledging who they needed to call. At the speed of light, the individuals showed up without missing a beat.
Between the time when they called the two individuals and the time it took for them to get to Miles' office, Gumshoe took his leave. He wished his boss the best of luck on his journey, and Miles thanked him for his advice.
"We're here!" a familiar voice chimed in. It was none other than the dynamic duo of troublemakers, Sebastian and Kay.
As they appeared, Miles and Gumshoe exchanged a mix of anticipation and apprehension. These two were a whirlwind of unpredictability, sometimes more chaos than help. Yet, in their own peculiar way, they often managed to bring a different perspective to situations, even if it meant a touch of madness.
Miles knew their unconventional ideas might just be what he needed to figure out this proposal conundrum.
"We're here!" Kay burst in with her usual enthusiastic flair, a wide grin on her face.
"Yes, we've arrived. Kay, I told you to stop bursting into doors. You got kicked out of Chilli’s because of that," Sebastian followed with a sigh, his demeanour slightly more composed, yet a glint of excitement sparkled in his eyes.
“Pssh, Chilli’s can suck a big one! They wouldn’t know an amazing entrance if it slapped them in the face,” The dark-haired woman giggled.
Miles managed a faint smile, though he couldn't help but feel a mix of relief and anxiety at their arrival. They had grown up so much in these years he’s known them. He feels like a proud father every time they meet.
"Thank you both for coming on such short notice. I know it must have been surprising,” Miles said as he adjusted his glasses.
Kay bounced forward. "Oh, come on, Mr. Edgeworth! We wouldn't miss this for the world! You're about to pop the question, aren't you? That's so exciting!"
"Indeed, congratulations are in order," Sebastian nodded, his usually reserved nature betraying a hint of enthusiasm.
Miles nodded, appreciating their genuine joy. "Thank you. I'm just not entirely sure how to proceed, but I am happy that the two of you are here."
"Leave it to us! We've got plenty of ideas to make this proposal epic!” Kay practically bounced on her toes, "Proposals are my specialty, especially the extra-special ones!"
Sebastian nodded in agreement. "We'll brainstorm and come up with something that'll make Mr. Wright's heart soar."
As Miles observed Kay's effervescent spirit and Sebastian's steadfast demeanour, a swell of gratitude enveloped him. These two, once vibrant and headstrong youths under his guidance, had evolved into remarkable individuals, their growth showcasing their resilience and determination.
He reminisced about the moments spent mentoring them, guiding their paths in their pursuit of justice. Witnessing their transformation into capable and compassionate people filled him with immense pride.
Miles marvelled at their presence, grateful for their unwavering support and infectious energy that brightened even the most challenging of days. They were not just colleagues or proteges; they had become like family, and their bond strengthened through shared experiences and mutual respect.
Miles sighed softly, knowing that these two, despite their wild ideas, held a unique perspective that might just make the proposal unforgettable. "I appreciate your enthusiasm, but please... be mindful of the 'epic' part."
Kay giggled, already brewing with ideas. "Don't worry, Mr. Edgeworth, we'll make it grand, yet personal. Just you wait!"
"Just... keep in mind, we're not aiming for fireworks on the courthouse steps," Miles couldn't help but chuckle at their enthusiasm.
“Aww man, that was the number one proposal idea on my list!” Kay laughed. It was obvious what she had said was sarcasm, and her laid-back personality helped contrast Miles' introverted and anxious side.
Sebastian interjected with his calming presence. "We'll aim for something memorable and meaningful. Let’s get to the planning team!" The curly haired man took out a clipboard out of completely nowhere and began writing things down.
Kay pulled out a pinboard from somewhere as well and began taking out red thread from her pockets. They wanted the board to look like a crime scene board so that if someone happened to see it, they would be confused about what was going on.
As the trio delved into planning, Miles couldn't help but feel a touch of gratitude for these two, who saw him not just as a mentor but as a paternal figure. Their unorthodox approach might be the key to unlocking a proposal that would capture the heart of the man he loved.
While the Edgeworth Team seemed to be chaotic, it could not match the chaos that was happening at the Wright Anything Agency.
Athena excitedly waved a brightly coloured whiteboard marker. "I've got it! We should arrange a flash mob at the courthouse! Picture this: we all burst into song and dance, and Mr. Wright pops the question in the middle of it!" She said as she drew out the image on the whiteboard.
Apollo and Trucy exchanged a glance, their raised eyebrows aimed at Athena, silently conveying their shared curiosity and questioning toward her.
"A flash mob? Really? How about this: we hire a skywriter to spell out 'Marry Me, Miles,’ in the clouds during court recess!" Apollo said as he showcased the image of the sign with his hands.
"No, no, no! What if we rig up the whole courtroom with confetti cannons and have a giant rabbit pop out of a hat with the ring?" Trucy, twirling a deck of cards, chimed in. She put the cards down to draw a picture on the whiteboard as Apollo and Athena continued to argue about whether they could even afford a skywriter.
They kept coming up with the weirdest ideas, all of them talking over each other, and the spiky-haired man was unsure he was even hearing them all correctly.
As they all fired off their increasingly bizarre ideas, Phoenix attempted to interject. "Guys, maybe we should consider—"
But his words were drowned out by the cacophony of suggestions. Athena waved her marker around, Apollo conjured imaginary clouds, and Trucy simulated an exploding confetti cannon with her cards.
"Come on, everyone, let's decide!" Athena exclaimed, while Apollo countered, "No, mine's more romantic!" Trucy added, "Imagine the magic of a giant rabbit!"
Phoenix attempted to regain control of the conversation. "Wait, maybe we should—"
But his attempt was futile as the trio continued, each one trying to outdo the other with their outlandish proposals. The office buzzed with their creative chaos, leaving Phoenix shaking his head, unable to get a word in with the whirlwind of absurdity.
Athena leaned against the desk, arms crossed, a determined look on her face. "Okay, guys, let's focus! We need a solid plan here."
"How about a proposal on a roller coaster? Think about it: Daddy at the peak, ring in hand, screaming 'Will you marry me?'" Trucy said with excitement!
"What about a proposal with a surprise witness testimony? Mr. Wright calls Mr. Edgeworth to the stand and, bam! He presents the ring!" Athena said with enthusiasm.
"Or how about a proposal during a live courtroom drama? Daddy delivers his closing argument, and then, voilà, the ring appears!" Trucy drew out the picture of the courtroom on the board.
Apollo shook his head, trying to steer the conversation. "Guys, those ideas are... unique, but maybe something more heartfelt and you know, not immensely nerve-wracking?"
Athena waved off Apollo's suggestion. "No, no, we need something dramatic, something that embodies 'Phoenix Wright'! Something everyone will be able to remember! Something that will cause Mr. Edgeworth’s jaw to drop and go ‘wow.’"
Trucy clapped for Athena’s description and threw in another offbeat suggestion. "Imagine a proposal with a sudden earthquake drill! They take cover, and Daddy hands over the ring!"
Phoenix attempted to get a word in. "Guys, what if we—"
But his voice was swept away by their rapid-fire ideas.
Athena countered, "What if it's a proposal during a surprise evidence reveal, but—"
Trucy interjected with another concept, "Or a proposal in the midst of a sudden paper chase—"
"Guys, perhaps we could—," Apollo raised his voice, attempting to regain control.
Yet the torrent of ideas surged forward, creating a whirlwind of unconventional suggestions that left Phoenix and Apollo standing there, overshadowed by their enthusiastic brainstorming.
As the commotion continued, Apollo turned to Phoenix, his expression apologetic.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Wright. They got carried away with their... uh, creative ideas. We both know they mean well, but honestly, I would rather not interrupt and get my tongue sliced off,” Apollo shivered, at the thought of Athena telling Simon that he hurt her in any way and him dicing him up into several pieces. He knew Athena was more than capable of crushing Apollo into a small basketball and dribbling with him, but sometimes, she wanted others to do her dirty work for her.
"It's alright, Apollo. I appreciate their enthusiasm, but I'm not sure how practical some of those ideas would be,” Phoenix managed a small smile.
Apollo nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I don't think we'll find a courthouse equipped for a surprise earthquake drill or a sudden witness testimony anytime soon."
"Exactly. But I appreciate their effort to make this memorable,” Phoenix chuckled softly.
Phoenix leaned back, a faint smile on his lips as he observed the two women drawing god knows what on the whiteboard. He looked over to Apollo who seemed lost in thought but also had a smile on his face.
"Hey, Apollo, you seem to be getting lost in your ideas. Everything okay?" The spiky-haired man asked.
Apollo’s thought was brusted, and he looked quickly over to his boss. He scratched the back of his head, trying to regain his composure. "Yeah, it's just... you know, relationships and all that. Just gets you thinking about your own life."
"Ah, I see." Phoenix nodded knowingly. "How's Klavier doing anyways?"
His boss curled an eyebrow at him with a smug expression on his face. Apollo's embarrassment seemed to come rushing back. The shorter man forgets that he had mentioned being in a relationship now with the former rockstar and prosecutor, Klavier Gavin.
The embarrassment, however, was replaced by a subtle warmth as he thought of the happiness Klavier brings to his life.
"He's good. We've been... good. Actually, really good. He's been supportive with work, and... well, he's great. Sorry, I am not the best with words, but I am grateful to have him by my side. It’s also just sort of embarrassing to talk about this with my boss of all people, you know," He rubbed his arm in nervousness.
Phoenix smiled warmly at Apollo's genuine happiness. "Don’t worry about it. I didn’t expect you to share more than you’re comfortable with anyway. But, that's wonderful to hear, Apollo. It's good to have someone you can trust by your side. Klavier’s a good kid."
Apollo nodded in agreement, a small grin tugging at the corners of his lips. "Yeah, definitely. It's been... different, but good different, you know?"
Their conversation was interrupted by Athena and Trucy, who bombarded them with questions about the recent brainstorming session. Caught off guard, Phoenix and Apollo exchanged puzzled glances, momentarily lost in the whirlwind of ideas they had just heard, struggling to recollect any specifics amidst their own conversation about relationships.
"So, you guys seriously didn't hear any of our ideas?" Athena leaned in, her curiosity piqued.
"You didn't hear about the surprise courtroom witness or the sudden paper chase? Oh, and what about the earthquake drill proposal?" The young magician said with her hands in front of her in the shape of fists.
Apollo scratched his head, shooting a helpless glance at his boss. "We were... um... a bit preoccupied discussing other things."
"Aw, come on! You're not curious about the surprise witness or the magical paper chase?" She asked her father.
Athena joined in, her eyes wide with anticipation. "Don't tell us you're not intrigued by the earthquake proposal! It's so out-of-the-box!"
"Well, it all sounds very imaginative, but I'm not entirely sure half of those are doable in a real courtroom setting or doable in general," The lawyer in the blue suit rubbed his neck as he wore a defeated-looking expression.
Apollo nodded in agreement. "Yeah, some of those ideas might be a bit... challenging to pull off, especially in a professional environment."
Athena and Trucy exchanged disappointed glances, realizing their fantastical proposals might not be as feasible as they initially thought. They simply wanted the defence attorney to showcase his love proudly and loudly but seemed to have made an impossible standard.
“But hey, I really appreciate the effort! The enthusiasm for making the proposal special means a lot to me, even if some of the ideas are a bit... unconventional. I just know the two of you can come up with some more… manageable?” Phoenix, ever the diplomat, tried to soften the situation and make sure that the women knew how important their contributions still were to him.
Apollo glanced around the room, observing the disappointment on Athena and Trucy's faces. He felt a spark of inspiration igniting in his mind, a notion that seemed promising.
“That's it!” Apollo said, finger in the sky because of his epiphany. This startled the other individuals in the room and they looked at him with a confused look.
“What is Apollo?” The spiky-haired man asked, and Apollo asked them all to huddle around. In true Agency fashion, they did so without asking questions.
As they gathered closer, Apollo leaned in and whispered his idea. The spark in his eyes matched the sudden gleam of excitement in Trucy and Athena's expressions. Their huddled discussion intensified, their voices barely audible as they plotted the next steps.
Trucy decided to take the lead on the planning after Apollo finished explaining the idea.
"Okay, Athena and Apollo, you guys will take on the 'stalking' duty. Keep an eye on Papa’s schedule tomorrow. We need to know his every move!"
Athena and Apollo exchanged determined nods, ready to take on their assigned roles.
Phoenix raised an eyebrow, mildly concerned. "Stalking? Really guys, isn't that a bit... intrusive? I don't want to make him uncomfortable or feel on edge"
Trucy waved her hand around dismissively towards her father. Phoenix couldn’t help but smile a little. She had gained a lot of his small quirks and gestures.
"No, no! Not like that, Daddy! Just a bit of observation, that's all. We need to make sure our plan aligns with Papa’s schedule! Can’t have anything going bust and ruining it simply because we weren’t in sync with his schedule!" His daughter said, and he could see her point. He still felt awkward with it, but he knew his team would be courtesy of the grey-haired man.
"Alright, just keep it respectful, please,” Phoenix nodded hesitantly, not entirely convinced but willing to trust their intentions.
They all agreed to the simple rule and seemed incredibly excited to be a part of such a big event.
"Alright, team! We've set up this beautifully mastered plan! Tomorrow's the big day, and we've got to make sure everything's as perfect as it can be," Trucy declared, her voice ringing with a hint of exhilaration.
"We've got our roles locked in stone. Everyone remembers their role?" Trucy continued, glancing at Athena and Apollo. "Athena and Apollo, you're on Papa duty. Watch every step he takes, every meeting he attends, and every move he makes."
Athena nodded enthusiastically at the young magician. "You can count on us, Trucy! We'll make sure everything's meticulously noted down."
"Absolutely, we've got this covered. You got the right people on this task,” Apollo said with a smile.
Trucy beamed at the reassurance. "Great! And don't forget, we're meeting here tomorrow afternoon to put the final touches on our plan. Let's make this proposal one for the history books!"
With their roles clear and their determination high, the team dispersed, ready to fulfill their assigned tasks and ensure that the proposal plan for Mr. Edgeworth unfolded flawlessly. As the two attorneys and magician walked off, discussing something relating to tomorrow, Phoenix stood there aimlessly.
As Phoenix watched the trio vanish down the hallway, he couldn't help but feel a bit lost in the shuffle of their plan. "What am I supposed to do?! This is my proposal, yet I have no role?"
The spiky-haired man said in pure confusion. He was completely baffled. Phoenix let out a sigh before going back to his office to continue his work and hopefully take his mind off this plan.
The whole situation seemed a bit surreal to him. He was supposed to be the one proposing, yet he found himself on the sidelines, unsure of where he fit in this covert mission. He had entrusted his team with the task, but now, he felt a pang of uncertainty about his own part in this grand scheme.
Before Phoenix knew it, it was already midnight, and everyone had already gone home. Phoenix could never believe how Apollo and Athena got their work done but still had time to indulge his daughter in her shenanigans.
Alone with his thoughts, surrounded by the stillness of midnight, Phoenix sat back on the sofa, staring at nothing in particular. He sat in the living room and noticed that it was getting quite late. He wonders why his partner has not come home from work yet. His partner… he really can’t wait until he can say his husband.
The defence attorney smiled to himself. He felt a sudden rush of warmness all over his body. He wonders if he will take Miles's last name or if Mile’s will take his. As Phoenix thought more about if he concluded that they would either hyphenate their names or he would take Miles. Phoenix Edgeworth, now that has a ring to it. God, he was acting like a schoolboy who just got his first real crush. Maybe next he should write their names inside a big heart in a diary.
But all the fuzziness and happiness seemed to fade away when he realized the man still wasn’t his husband. He felt a mix of emotions swirling within him, a cocktail of excitement, nervousness, and a tinge of overwhelmed confusion.
"I'm supposed to be the one proposing, but I'm completely in the dark about the plan," he murmured to himself, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "I want this to be special for Miles. I want to show him how much he means to me, but now, it feels like I'm not even part of my own proposal."
The weight of the impending proposal sat heavily on his shoulders. He longed to express his love and commitment to Miles in the perfect way, yet he found himself sidelined, unsure of where he fit into the intricate plan his team had concocted. Their help was supposed to elevate his stress, so why does he still feel nervous?
With a sigh, Phoenix reached for his phone, scrolling through his contacts until he found the name he was looking for: Maya Fey. She was in Khura'in, but a late-night call wasn't unusual between them. She probably was getting up right about now anyways.
He hit the call button, and three rings went by.
“Maybe she’s busy?” Phoenix thought to himself but without skipping a beat, Maya picked up the phone like she knew he had said that.
"Nick! Just give me one moment!” The younger woman said. She seemed to be moving something around in the background, “Hey, Nick! Long time no talk," Maya's cheerful voice echoed through the line.
"Hey, Maya, sorry for calling you out of the blue. I hope I didn't interrupt anything," Phoenix said.
"Come on, Nick! You know you're never an interruption. I'm just in the middle of 'borrowing' a few snacks from the kitchen here. They keep hiding the snacks from me, but they forget how smart I can be when it comes to food,” She laughed, and Phoenix smiled. He missed her immensely, it was good to hear her voice.
“How's everything on your end?" Maya replied with her usual cheerful tone.
"Well, things are... a little hectic, I guess. There's something big happening," Phoenix said, trying to sound casual but failing to hide the underlying nervousness.
"Ooh, big news! Do tell, Nick. Is it finally time for Edgeworth to put a ring on it?" Maya teased, giggling on the other end.
"You've got a direct line to the spirit world, huh? I never could hide anything from you. You can read me like a book even when you can’t see my face. But yeah, I'm considering it," Phoenix replied, smiling despite the slight embarrassment in his tone.
"Nick! That's fantastic! I'm so excited for you guys!” She yelled through the phone, and Phoenix had to take the phone away from his ear as he winced at her yelling.
“You know, Edgeworth is lucky to have a great guy like you. Just go with your heart, Nick. It always works out," Maya encouraged, her voice full of warmth.
"Thanks, Maya. You're always the voice of reason in times like these," Phoenix stated gratefully.
"No problem, Nick. Just remember, even when things seem complicated, the best decisions come from the heart. So, are you going all out with roses and candles or keeping it subtle and sweet?" Maya asked, her curiosity piqued.
"Um, I'm not exactly sure yet. It's been a bit chaotic. My team's taken the reins, and I'm... well, a bit left out," Phoenix admitted, a trace of uncertainty in his voice.
"Nick, you're a pro at this! Don't worry too much about the details. It's the sentiment that counts. Trust your instincts and make it special in your way," Maya advised, her words comforting.
Phoenix felt a weight lift off his shoulders after the conversation. Maya always had a way of calming his nerves and offering insightful advice. As they chatted a bit more, exchanging stories and catching up, Phoenix found himself feeling more confident about the impending proposal and the importance of following his heart.
“Also, should you really be screaming that loud in the morning? Won’t they get mad at you?”
Maya blew raspberries through the line, and Phoenix couldn’t help but laugh. Even now they were grown up, she was still like his younger sister.
“They can’t get mad at me. I won’t allow myself to be ridiculed by such people!” The spirit medium said confidently over the phone. Phoenix smiled. She really hadn’t changed at all.
“Never change, Maya, never change.”
“Will do!” She giggled, “I hope everything goes well with the proposal preparations, Nick. Take care of yourself, and don’t stress out. I know that's more said than done, but you’re an incredible guy, and I have utter faith you will make an amazing proposal.”
“Thanks, Maya. I appreciate this talk. You calmed me down,” Phoenix said, and he meant every word.
“No worries Nick. That's what I'm here for anyway. To be a great friend, amazing spirit medium, and be the best person alive," She said, and the pair giggled at this comment, "Also, I better be the maid of honour at your wedding or I will riot,” Her words were firm and stern. Phoenix laughed and agreed.
“Of course, I wouldn’t have anyone else be my maid of honour. If you aren’t there, I simply can’t get married without feeling fulfilled.”
“Awhh, Nick! You love me! You silly man, I am so lucky to have you!”
“I could say the same for you. Thank you for everything,” The dark-haired man smiled and the two friends shared their goodbyes. Talking to Maya always helps calm his nerves and makes him feel way better. In times of need, she was always there to support and stand by him. He’s indebted to her in many ways.
The night continued to go on, and Phoenix kept looking at the clock. Right on cue, Miles entered their home, carrying an air of mystery about him. The day had been quite eventful with his team's secret mission to plan the proposal for Phoenix, and yet, he managed to maintain a composed façade.
Despite his curiosity about why his partner was late, Phoenix chose not to pry, opting instead to welcome Miles home with a warm smile and a simple, "Dinner's waiting in the kitchen, love. Trucy already went to bed, she has school tomorrow."
Miles' eyes lit up at the sight of Phoenix, a flicker of relief flashing across his face. "Thank you, Phoenix. I apologize for running late, work kept me a little late."
As Miles set his briefcase down to take off his shoes, the subtle tension hung in the air, a quiet acknowledgment that something was brewing beneath the surface. Miles was careful with his words, trying to evade any hint of the plans taking place without revealing too much.
"Anything interesting happening at the office today?" Phoenix asked casually, trying to probe without being too direct.
Miles hesitated, his mind racing to fabricate a plausible story that wouldn't arouse suspicion. "Just the usual chaos. Some unexpected developments required my attention. You know, regular Chief Prosecutor duties."
Phoenix nodded understandingly, but his mind was occupied with possibilities. He trusted Miles, yet his instincts hinted that there was more to this evening's lateness than met the eye. The lingering doubt tugged at Phoenix, making him wonder if something was going on in Miles' life that he wasn’t telling him about.
Phoenix had not realized, but the grey-haired man had already taken off his shoes and walked over to him to apply a soft kiss to his head. He was snapped out of his trance due to the kiss.
The defence attorney looked up, meeting Miles' gaze, surprised by the unexpected gesture. "What was that for?"
"Just making sure you know I'm here," Miles replied softly, his hand resting on Phoenix's neck. He brought their foreheads together, and Phoenix felt content in the moment. They weren’t the most overly affectionate pair, but they had their moments.
Phoenix managed a small smile, grateful for the reassurance. "I appreciate it. Just been one of those days, you know? Lots going on in my head right now."
"Of course." Miles' tone carried understanding. "If there's anything on your mind, you know you can tell me, right?"
"Yeah, I know." Phoenix leaned into Miles' touch, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. "I trust you, Miles. Sometimes my brain just gets carried away."
"We all have our moments. But I'm here for you, just like you're always here for me. Please feel free to talk to me if you need it, alright?" His partner reassured him, placing another kiss, but this time on his temple.
As the weight of uncertainty lifted, Phoenix felt warmth flood his chest. His doubts didn't vanish entirely, but the connection between him and Miles anchored him in that moment. No matter what tomorrow brought, their bond remained a steady foundation. He hopes that Apollo and Athena will not get caught because that would be very embarrassing to explain and also ruin the entirety of his plan.
Phoenix exhaled, a mix of relief and lingering concern. "Thanks, Miles. I appreciate that. Anyway, let’s forget about all this stress tonight. Your dinner is ready for when you are ready, I’ll put on some Steel Samurai for us to watch."
Miles smiled, grateful for the shift in focus. "That sounds perfect. You know I would never say no to watching Steel Samurai with you. Time to explain the rest of the episodes."
The spiky-haired man could not help but laugh at the comment. He had learned more about Steel Samurai than he thought he ever needed to know. But he is not complaining. He loved learning about his partner's interests and finding a common ground to discuss things that weren't their respective work.
Eventually, they settled at the table, Miles enjoying his meal and Phoenix watching Steel Samurai with intense focus. The quiet comfort of each other's presence was pleasant for both of the men. At that moment, amidst the warmth of their home and the simple joy of being together, the worries of the day slowly dissipated.
With a glance, a smile, and a soft touch of their hands, they communicated a silent promise to face whatever challenges lay ahead, hand in hand.
The night wore on, the city outside dimmed into slumber, and the two men found solace in the tranquillity of the evening. As they retired to bed, their fingers intertwined, Phoenix whispered a heartfelt goodnight, hoping for a day that would bring clarity and joy.
And so, as the night settled, they drifted off into dreams, both with their thoughts, hopes, and uncertainties tucked away in their hearts, awaiting the dawn of a new day.
