[There’s a theory about friends, especially best friends, and it postulates that true friends can go long stretches of time - years, or even decades - without seeing each other or talking to each other, but all of that time is wiped away the moment they are together again. Talking, laughing, and caring for each other, as if they were together just yesterday.
Lydia and Betelgeuse were those friends, and this was their moment.
They stayed up, late into the night, talking about the time they were apart. Betelgeuse’s hair became an ever-shifting rainbow of colors as Lydia talked about her life during their time apart. When she talked about her marriage, though, his hair was washed with a persistent orange haze over the reds, blues, and purples it cycled through.
When it came to the later years of her marriage, and the reason she was back at her parent’s house, his hair flamed a solid blood red. Listening to her recount the repeated miscarriages she suffered, and the lengths she went to give her husband everything he wanted - with every attempt failing in the end - even his golden eyes darkened to a deeper, brown-speckled, hazel.
"I was in near-constant pain, physically, emotionally, for the last couple of years, before we gave up. Between all of the hormone shots and the treatments, I never had a chance to breathe."
Until this moment, until he saw the kind of deep pain that can only be inflicted by someone you love and trust unconditionally in his best friend’s eyes, Betelgeuse thought he’d been the one tortured all these years. He’d seen his fair share of pain, knew he deserved a good portion of it, but Lydia didn’t deserve any of this. She never deserved to be hurt by someone who loved her, not even by someone who loves her half as much as he does.
Loves. His train of thought had raced through that word before he really had a chance to think about it. He’d enjoyed things before - scaring the breathers, pulling elaborate pranks, grifting the gullible, and scamming anyone who would take the bait. He wasn’t even sure he loved his own mother, the mother who was instrumental in his banishment and the curse that kept him invisible and tethered to the Netherworld - unless he was summoned by a living person. But there was no hesitation when it came to Lydia, he loves her.
"...And that’s how I came to be, I think the kids call it, ‘thicc’." Lydia giggled at the word. "I’ve grown up, and out, since we last saw each other." She gestured at the curve of her hips. "Don’t get me wrong, I like the new look, personally."
"I can see why." Betelgeuse’s head tilted slightly, as he looked toward where she gestured, and his eyebrows unconsciously jumped as his eyes widened. He felt his scalp prickle and realized, to his embarrassment, that he’d said that out loud.
"Eyes up here, big boy!" Lydia teased him and laughed. She was reading Betelgeuse like a book already - no thanks to his hair that he was certain was turning from green to pink. "I think that’s enough trauma-dumping from me tonight, don’t you? I could use some sleep."]
[Lydia took off out of the kitchen, grabbed her handbag, and stormed out to her car. Every mirror in the house seemed to flash darkly as she passed, like a shadow was moving on the other side, tracking her.]
[“Lyds?”
“Hmm?”
“Please don’t send me back again.”
His words almost sounded like a whispered prayer, her heart soared and shattered as he spoke. The loneliest man she’d ever met was tired of being lonely.]
[“You’re more man than I know what to do with,” she spun around in his arms and pressed her lips to his, “I just don’t want you to feel like I’m holding you hostage.”
“Oh, make no mistake, Lyds. Yer locked in here with me, not the other way around.”
“Well, if you change your mind, I-I would be open to doing the whole wedding thing again. Now eat, before it gets cold.”]

Mix between musical and cartoon. Lyda and beets have been fried s before the whole musical timeline, then the events of the musical happen cuz lyds was slowly forgetting beets. After events, she had selective amnesia and after coming back home during a separation from her abusive husband she meets beets again. They eventually fall in love after resuming their friendship when she remembers, then drama etc. renew their vows, ex becomes homicidal, they have a baby, beej becomes human at end.
