“Can he take us?” She asks, her eyes pinched shut, hands pressed hard against the filthy brick wall.
Joel scoffs. “He ain't got a place for us here, but he gave me directions to someplace he says should be safe for a few days.”
“Whatever, we don't have time to be picky, let's go.” Joel sidles up to her, and she takes his arm. They hobble the few blocks it takes to get from Malik's place to the hideout, having to stop periodically so Tess can lean against Joel and catch her breath. Finally, they round the corner, and there it is. A low building, a light still on in the window, Joel and Tess can both hear the sounds of animals.
Tess laughs suddenly low and a little maniacal, pressing against Joel. When she's finally able to control herself again, she looks up at him, her eyes filled with tears, his filled with confusion.
“Don't you get it, Joel? It's Christmas Eve in the Boston QZ, and there's no room in the fucking inn. But we were able to find refuge in the stables.” Tess’s hand goes to rest on the heavy swell of her abdomen, and she pulls him forward. “Let's go, Texas, this baby isn't gonna wait much longer.”
IE: Joel and Tess are looking for a place to stay on Christmas Eve.
