Chapter Text
Sonic was reclining in one of his ornate chairs, a discarded book laying in his lap, he’d tried to pick up reading like he usually did to relax but he couldn’t really get into them. He had met with lady nimue a few hours prior to talk about getting back to his world. Don’t him wrong he was excited about getting go home and seeing everyone again but he couldn’t help but feel bad for the people he was leaving behind. He was king after all, and these folks had been relying on him for months now and he felt guilty just up and leaving (abandoning) them.
As he sat in thought he looked out the grand window overlooking the town. It was nighttime and slightly overcast, the clouds gradually dispersing. He stared at the moon peaking through the clouds and hummed, it was full. As it came into view he started feeling…odd? It was a cold feeling deep in his chest, like there was ice piercing him to his core. It was familiar in a way that made him feel a sense of dread, the more he stared at the moon. The realization hit him like a truck.
Again. It was happening again. How in the world could this possibly be happening here, now? The tell tale feeling of his entire body stretching, bones slowly cracking and shifting, his quills growing wildly. The panic had already set in, his brain becoming fuzzy with the mixture of pain and anxiety. At this point the only thing he could do was run, run as far as he could from the castle. The dread sonic was feeling was different from his usual transformation, he could feel his consciousness slipping.
Usually becoming the werehog was just physically taxing but this time his mind was being affected, he was becoming feral, which only solidified his need to get away from everyone. He had a short amount of time to get away, the moon slowly coming out from behind thick clouds. He immediately took off, going as fast as he could into the darkness of the forest. The more he ran the more he felt himself slipping away, the more frantic he became. He sped up as much as he could, the sound barrier cracking as he raced into the woods.
Lancelot was doing his nightly rounds, inspecting the halls of the castle, insuring the safety of the king and all his servants when he heard the deafening sound of someone going an impossible speed, startling him. He knew there was only one other than him that could reach such speeds, the alarms began ringing in his head. He races towards the nearest window looking out into the still of the night, the full moon being some of the only light that shone on the sleeping town below.
As he looked he saw the dust being kicked up as a blue figure speeding towards the forest and immediately gave chase. He used chaos control to teleport to the entrance to the woods, inspecting his surroundings, looking for any signs of the king. For a moment he thought he had missed him entirely before hearing the rustling of the woods and seeing the glint of something gold in the light filtered through the foliage. He quickly followed the sound, pushing through the brush as he followed the sound. He could make out a large figure as he reached a small clearing, it was breathing heavily, its beastly claws gripping at something.
A red cloth…no a mantle, ripped and torn at the edges, a gash going down the center. Lancelot stopped in his tracks as he stared, not wanting to believe what he was seeing, the sense of dread becoming and unbearable weight in his chest. His grip on Arondight tightened and he slowly creeped closer towards the beast. It’s hearing must’ve been incredible as it’s turned around to stare at him. It seemed surprised, its bright green eyes almost glowing in the light of the full moon. The mantle was trapped under its huge claws, and as lance inspected it he knew immediately, that was the kings. His king. This beast had attacked the king. He knew what must be done.
