Chapter Text
The day Cody met Obi-Wan Kenobi, he hadn’t expected it to go as well as it did. Cody was expecting a cold and impersonal officer, whom Cody could perhaps grow to respect, but never trust.
And yet….
"Jedi Master - and High General now, I suppose - Obi-Wan Kenobi," the Jedi introduced himself.
I know, they wanted to say, but knew better than to do so, instead staying at attention and waiting for a prompt to speak.
"And you are?" the general continued.
"Commander CC-2224, sir."
General Kenobi hesitated, seeming to search their visor as if it were their eyes, before asking, "Is that what you would prefer to be called?"
Cody didn't let himself react. They knew better than to show that they, or any of their brothers, were anything less than perfect, obedient soldiers, just as ordered.
"'Commander' is also an acceptable form of address," is all they said.
The general looked at him for a little while longer, then nodded and smiled.
“Well then, it is very nice to meet you, Commander. I look forward to working with you.”
The general sounded sincere enough when he said it, but Cody wasn’t going to hold their breath.
When that first briefing went well – the general open to suggestions and willing to modify his plans based on those suggestions – Cody had decided that yes, they were going to take a chance.
If this went poorly, he could blame the Prime (aiwha chum that he now was) having a spontaneous need to name Cody specifically. He'd say he was the only one who was like this; his brothers were perfectly obedient little drones who only had numbers.
But if the warmth which seemed to shine in the Jedi’s eyes each time he introduced himself to the troopers was genuine, then – perhaps – they could all be safe enough to use their names here.
So when, after the briefing, General Kenobi turned to him with a smile and said, “Goodnight, Commander,” Cody took a risk.
Taking off their helmet and tucking it under their arm, they said, “Actually, it’s Cody, sir.”
The general beamed with delight. “A pleasure to meet you, Commander Cody.”
