“Who are you?” Hunter demanded into the darkness.
The cadet turned, his face lit on one side by the light streaming in from the open door. A reg. He was about Hunter’s age, equivalent of a natborn fifteen, maybe sixteen, with a cocksure smirk and a curious gaze that looked Hunter up and down. “I’m Cody,” he said, as if that was supposed to explain everything....
The Bad Batch was not always a well-oiled machine. When they were cadets, they had trouble meshing their styles, and Hunter was a reluctant leader.
They were well on their way to being deemed ‘failed experimental clone force 99’ when they caught the attention of a certain cadet. -

In the waning months of the Clone Wars, trooper CT-8774 saves a Republic cruiser from a Separatist attack and earns himself a promotion to ARC trooper. Being on his general’s radar, however, turns out to be unlucky when he gets an assignment to escort uptight Jedi Oahke Dhara behind enemy lines. When their cover is blown, they find a way to escape Separatist territory...and find common ground that leads to more than either of them expected.
Each bound by duty that will pull them apart, they must decide their fate as the war ends: the Jedi to live according to a code that forbids attachment, and the soldier to follow orders...

By the time Cody stepped onto the bridge, the general was already there, hooded and cloaked and staring out the front window, contemplating whatever it was a Jedi contemplates, probably some long-winded excuse for the half-baked Rako Hardeen stunt. Cody stood next to him, his helmet tucked under one arm, observing at the stars outside. He ignored his general for a moment. He wasn’t actually upset about the deception – he understood duty as well as anyone, but he didn’t mind making Kenobi sweat a little.
Slowly, he let his eyes shift to the side, finally meeting the general’s…
...and snorted a laugh so loud, it echoed off the windows.

“My name is Cody.” He announced. “I have spent many years serving the Galactic Army of the Republic as Marshal Commander of the 7th Sky Corps and I have spent my whole life as property of the Jedi. I am not here to fight you, I am here to collect the bounty on High General and Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi.”
Obi-Wan pulled away from his grip once more, yanked out of it really, and so Cody shoved him harder, causing the General to stumble but not fall. He felt guilty but didn’t let it show, they had to make this look real. The Commander didn’t have time to feel guilty then, he had to focus on giving a convincing performance.

OR: following Obi-Wan and Quinlan’s fight with Cad Bane, Cody and the two Jedi come up with the genius plan for the Commander to hand Obi-Wan over to the separatists in exchange for credits, only for Quinlan to make a daring rescue! … it doesn’t go quite as well as they planned.

And that was the answer to it all, really. When you're built to die for someone who just as stubbornly insists upon dying for you, too, the normal formalities of the chain of command tend to become a little hazy.
Cody pines for something that he knows he couldn't, shouldn't, have. He's been good enough at ignoring it, mostly, but when Obi-Wan is invited to a Senate ball and asks to bring Cody as a plus-one, he suddenly finds that his rising feelings for his general might not quite be as easy to suppress as he'd hoped...
