Chapter 1: chase me

Chapter Text

Jason was in a bit of a mood tonight. It wasn’t like it was a bad patrol either, it was relatively quiet for Gotham. He only had to step in to stop a few muggings and busted a drug deal. He did witness a couple kids booking it from a superstore, with clearly stolen items stuffed in their clothes.  As soon as he saw that it was some snack bags, he helped them find an open shelter and slipped some money in their pockets.

He hoped it would help them get by for a few weeks, and it’s not like he need his allowance anyway. Bruce more than provide him with enough stuff, and he usually use it to buy food for him and his friend during patrol. Speaking of which, his friend was the reason he was in a bad mood in the first place.

Timmy or Tim, as he preferred, ditched him for the third night in a row. The little stalker (he caught the younger boy taking photo of him a couple months ago) usually met up with him at least once week. He liked seeing the cool shots that Tim would take of him and the rest of Gotham’s night life. They would share what they’d been up to lately and exchange any information that found out lately.

It was cool to have a friend and nice to have a break when he was out at night. Plus, he has an excuse to buy some food and get the kid to eat with him. There was no way a kid only a few years younger than him would be that tiny. He always felt like he was channeling his inner Alfred and felt the desperate need to feed him every time he saw him.

Except the kid hadn’t been around lately. He did mention that his parents were around so he might not be able to sneak out as much, so Jason wasn’t too worried. He could always check up on the kid since he figured out that he was the Drake’s kid. He didn’t want the kid to know he found out who he was and was scared that if he approached him outside of the mask, he’d figure out his identity. However, he couldn’t get the nagging feeling that something was wrong out of his mind.

Maybe he’d stop by his neighbor’s house just for the piece of mind.

He debated heading back for the night but decided to check back at their usual meet up spot just in case. He nearly slipped off the rooftop when he landed, the rain and jumping rooftops did not mix. He let out a sad sigh when he didn’t see any bright-eyed kids with a camera hanging off their necks.

He looked down and caught the sad look on his face. He scoffed at his reflection and kicked at the puddle below him, “Pull it together Jason, you’ll check up on him tomorrow he’s fine.”

He turned around to head back home, missing that for a few seconds the refection changed to the face of a young boy.

As the face faded away the puddle began to let out a few ripples. The first three flowed out quickly, the next three came slowly, and the final three followed quickly once more. The water settled once more but, it was too late.

No one was there to see it.
