Work Text:
Atsumu remembers what today’s date is as soon as he opens his eyes. Today is their anniversary. He and Rin have been together for twenty years . They started dating back in highschool, and simply never let go of each other from that point on. They were fourteen year-old awkward teenagers with their heads full of volleyball dreams and professional careers, and now they’re thirty-four and they’ve been retired for about two months from said volleyball professional careers.
It’s been a little more than two months that Atsumu is living the life he’s always dreamed to have with Rin. They bought their house a few months before retiring and have been slowly bringing their stuff over the past weeks. Their schedules being way less packed compared to the beginning of their careers, they found themselves having more free time than ever. They decided on a house in the countryside, and are now completely settled in. They’re surrounded by fields, forests and lakes and Atsumu couldn’t have dreamed of a better view to wake up to every morning. (Minus the view of Rin sleeping next to him of course.) Their house isn’t too big but not too small either, and it has a big garden so that their dog can play at her ease. Indeed, they adopted an eight-months-old Australian Shepherd named Maki who has way more energy than Atsumu and Rintarou combined have ever had. They also adopted a two-year-old black kitten that they named Scar after having discovered their common simping for The Lion King ’s infamous villain. So they were now parents of three children, as Rin already had a cat of his own when he was in his previous apartment, a female orange cat named Nami.
As Atsumu looks fondly at the sleeping figure next to him, he allows his memory to take him back to one of the happiest moments of his life. Eleven years ago.
🌹
Atsumu had never really thought about it before that day. Other people’s opinions never really mattered to him – unless they were coming from his mom, Osamu, or Suna. Naturally, he never thought about other people’s view on his relationship, or life in general. Anyone who was close to him knew, and that was enough for him. But weirdly enough, he never envisioned the possibility of someone not knowing. Which was why Hinata’s question took him by surprise.
“Why don’t you go dancing, Atsumu-san?” He asked during one of their Friday team nights out. “The person of your dreams might be on that dance floor and you might miss them by staying on that booth!”
Atsumu had frozen at that, unable to adapt his reaction as he truly found himself taken aback. “What?” He blurted out.
And Hinata must have misinterpreted this because he suddenly looked guilty, as if he had overstepped by taking a sudden interest in Atsumu’s romantic life. “Sorry! I just meant that you’re the only one of us who’s single and I was afraid you might feel lonely on friends’ nights! Even Omi-san found someone.”
Atsumu frowned. He heard Sakusa scoff unbelievably not too far from him, also sitting at their table, but Atsumu paid him no mind. He glanced at the dance floor where Bokuto was dancing with a very awkward Akaashi and he smiled fondly at the sight.
It’s true that Suna was very rarely with them due to the fact that EJP and MSBY weren’t really close, but Atsumu never felt lonely. He enjoyed his time spent with his teammates and their partners nonetheless. Yes, he might have sometimes felt a bit envious of them for having their partners close to them, but it never stopped him from having fun. He was physically alone of course, but not once has Suna made him feel lonely. Plus, all their time apart was made up for tenfold everytime they got the chance to see each other. In Atsumu’s philosophy of life, absence made the heart grow fonder and always made the reunion better. It’s been like that since they left high school, five years ago, and he’s never once doubted that logic.
He drew his eyes back on Hinata and replied, “I’m not though?”
Hinata tilted his head to the side like a lost puppy. “Oh. I’m glad you don’t feel lonely. But still I–”
“No,” Atsumu interrupted him. He raised his hand and shook his head. He remembers how he offered a soft smile to the red-haired man so that he’d know that Atsumu wasn’t mad at all about the conversation, just frankly surprised. “I’m not single is what I meant.”
“What?!” Hinata screeched. Even Sakusa let out what sounded like a “Huh” in surprise.
“I–” Atsumu’s eyes widened and his eyebrows rose so high that they were hidden behind the blonde strands that fell on his forehead.
Hinata interrupted him before he could continue. “With who?! Since when?! Oh my god! Atsumu-san, why didn’t you tell us?!” The smaller man blurted out all too happily, forgetting to breathe.
“I– I thought everyone knew?” He replied dumbfounded. Even he sounded unsure about that, though. Visibly, no one did know.
“What do you mean you thought everyone knew?”
“Well… I’ve been with Sunarin since high school.” He shrugged as he stated what he thought was common knowledge but he might as well have said that he danced naked in front of the Queen of England with how dead the silence that followed felt.
Someone at their table choked on their drink. “Sunarin as in the EJP middle blocker Suna Rintarou?”
Atsumu couldn’t help but snort at the formulation of the question, a sense of pride filling his chest. “Well yeah, who else?”
“I–” Never in his life Atsumu thought he’d make Hinata Shouyou of all people speechless. “But… You guys don’t act like a couple.” The red-haired man started rambling before Atsumu could even utter a word. “I’ve seen them hug several times but Atsumu-san hugs everyone so I just thought that they’re close friends. I have also never seen them kiss on the mouth.” He looked as if he wasn’t even aware of the fact that he was voicing his thoughts aloud. Atsumu remembers how he found the sight rather endearing.
He always found Hinata to be a rather cute person, somehow like a little brother. Then he found himself smiling as he thought about how, if Rin were there, he would have called Atsumu out for being sappy and protective over his younger teammate — nevermind the fact that Hinata was only one year younger.
Rin has always been able to read Atsumu so easily and accurately — it freaked him out at first, but then he realized that he, too, was the only person able to read Rintarou as accurately as he could. The realization filled his stomach with butterflies at the time. (It still does.)
Although, being transparent to someone felt uncomfortable at first. He already had a deep, strong bond with Osamu. They knew each other like the back of their hands and could understand each other without even needing to talk. And he thought that was enough already, he didn’t need anyone else able to read right through him like that.
But then Rintarou barged into his life.
He’s just like that. Rin arrived in his life like a hurricane and had all of Atsumu’s walls crumble one after the other. At first it was scary, terrifying even. But then it felt freeing . It was a mix between how nothing made sense anymore, but at the same time everything fell into place. In no time, Rintarou carved himself a place in Atsumu’s chest, holding his heart in the very palm of his hand and Atsumu didn’t even feel scared anymore. No one had ever had that much power over him. Not even Osamu. As he’s linked by blood to Osamu, he knew that, inherently, he could never lose him. But Rintarou was different. Rintarou arrived and stole Atsumu’s heart without having to stay around. He did not have an unbreakable bond with Atsumu as Osamu did; Rintarou could leave Atsumu’s life. He could. Because he wasn’t obliged to stay. And if he did leave, it would be with Atsumu’s heart still in the palm of his hand. But even with that, Atsumu didn’t feel scared.
He remembers the day he confessed to his best friend in their third grade and how Atsumu didn’t even think of the possibility of his heart being ripped out of his chest by a possible rejection. Instead, it just felt right. It felt like it was something he needed to do, and something he wouldn’t have any regret over, even if Rintarou ended up rejecting him. That day, he found out that he didn’t mind having his heart ripped out of his chest if it meant that Rintarou was the one keeping it. That day, he realized that his heart belonged to Rintarou. It had since the moment he first saw the man, and it will until his very last breath.
That realization felt liberating .
And that realization led him to another one. The one when he learned that he, too, held a heart in his palm. Because just like his heart belonged to Rintarou, Rintarou’s heart belonged to him. And that has been the most precious and powerful realization he ever had.
Since that day, they never left each other’s side — figuratively , since they were playing in two different teams. But that didn’t matter, because they knew that a part of them was always with the other.
It’s not that they loved each other in secret. They never made an announcement, but they never hid it either. They never denied it nor they never lied to someone who asked. They were both proud to be each other’s boyfriends, and that was enough. They never really were into grand gestures and liked the sort of cocoon they found themselves in. Now that he thinks about it, Atsumu finds that maybe that’s why Hinata looked so shocked back then.
Both he and Rin were professional volleyball players, they were famous nationwide, maybe even worldwide. Due to that, they didn’t have that much privacy. Was it selfish of them to want to keep their relationship from the public? Atsumu didn’t think it was.
Very early on, they both knew and acknowledged the fact that volleyball, their professional career, was very important to them and that nothing – read: no one – could make them change their opinion on that. And maybe that was another reason why they just worked . Because never, not even once, Atsumu imagined himself asking Rin to adapt his professional career for him. Not even if it meant they could have been closer if Rin had chosen MSBY, or Atsumu EJP for instance. He wanted Rin to follow his own dreams and aspirations. Because no matter where those led him, Atsumu would always feel nothing but genuine pride and love for his boyfriend. And he knew that Rin felt the exact same towards him.
Their relationship would definitely be qualified as nontraditional to anyone’s eyes. But it worked for them, so they didn’t care. They hadn’t cared for the first nine years of their relationship, and they won’t care for the rest of their lives either.
“–san? Atsumu-san?” Hinata’s voice accompanied with the latter’s face and furrowed eyebrows resting way too close for comfort to his own face were what got Atsumu out of his thoughts. “Are you okay, Atsumu-san? You spaced out for quite some time.”
“You had a disgusting lovesick smile on your face, too.”
Atsumu glared quickly at Sakusa before directing his gaze back on Hinata. “Yeah, sorry about that, Shouyou-hun.” He chuckled sheepishly. “I got lost in thoughts.”
Hinata nodded and Atsumu noticed how his expression seemed to have changed compared to earlier. The red-haired man somehow didn’t look as shocked as before. “Omi-san is right, you did have a lovesick smile on your face.” He smiled and wiggled his eyebrows.
Atsumu found himself blushing at that, although he wasn’t able to deny it because he was , indeed, lovesick. Hinata barreled on, “Awww I can’t believe I never realized before!”
Atsumu chuckled and scratched the back of his neck. “Sorry, Shouyou-kun. I guess we just like to have our moments to ourselves ya know. Rin has never been a huge fan of public attention, and while I do enjoy it, it’s only about volleyball. I like having the public attention on me when I play, but I like havin’ my private life fer me.” I like having Rin for me, he thought but didn't say. Before he got lost in thoughts again, he looked up to Hinata and grinned. “I’ll properly introduce Rin as my boyfriend to ya next time we play against EJP.”
That seemed to satisfy Hinata, if the almost blinding grin he sent him in response was any indication.
Now that he reminisces about that, Atsumu remembers how he couldn’t help but think back to what Hinata had told him as he was on his way to Osamu’s shop for their usual weekly twin meeting the next day. Not only did Hinata feel shocked by the revelation (Atsumu didn’t know it was one), but he wasn’t the only one. Actually, there wasn’t a single person who knew that Suna was his boyfriend. He knew he never told them and so of course not all of them could know, but he at least thought maybe they’d have some doubts.
It’s the way Hinata said that they don’t ‘act like a couple’ that just kept running around in his head. What did that “acting like a couple” thing mean? Was there even such a thing?
Atsumu is a naturally tactile person, therefore he probably does touch his friends more than other people do, and he likes to tease and joke with them, but still, it’s different from the way he acts with Rin. As for Rin, he isn’t a fan of physical touch in the first place, so surely people should have noticed that he was touching Atsumu — a privilege that Atsumu will absolutely never get tired of. He loves being the only person who benefits from those wonderful Sunarin hugs ; with the exception of the very rare times Suna hugs his parents or sister. (He always looks constipated when doing so, Atsumu never misses the opportunity to make fun of him for it later.)
He was still thinking about all this when he stepped into Onigiri Miya, and he was so lost in his thoughts that he remembers almost bumping into the counter’s chair.
“Oi scrub, watch where yer goin’!”
He raised his head at the voice and couldn’t help the small rictus that took place on his face upon seeing his twin. “Well damn. What happened to hello? That’s some shitty customer service here.”
Osamu just rolled his eyes and went back to his onigiris at hand. Atsumu didn’t add anything and sat at the counter to watch his brother work.
As always, it had taken Osamu only one look at Atsumu’s face to figure out that something was running around his head. “Stop thinking so hard, your tiny brain will explode. Spill.”
Atsumu scoffed and placed his hands on the counter, playing with his fingers. The restaurant was still empty as it wasn’t lunchtime yet so they had a bit of time to chat. He cleared his throat before opening his mouth. “Whaddaya think about me and Rin?”
He snorts as he recalls the way Osamu paused his movements to look at him weirdly. The gray-haired twin put the rice ball he had in his hands on the plate to his left and raised an eyebrow to his brother. “...Is that a trick question?” He asked.
Atsumu, honest-to-god, pouted and groaned before dropping his head dramatically on his hands. Osamu, the ever bastard that he is, just snorted. “What brought this on?”
Now that Atsumu thinks of it, it was weird that Osamu didn’t tease him more, but he was so stuck in his thoughts that he can only realize this now that all of it is long past.
“Yesterday the team learned that I’m dating Sunarin.” He mumbled, his forehead still resting on his arms on the counter.
“Huh? Yesterday?” Osamu replied, genuinely surprised.
“Yeah,” he huffed.
“They didn’t know?”
He finally raised his head. “Well duh. Otherwise they wouldn’t have learned it yesterday .” He looked at his brother’s face to search for any mocking or teasing expression but when he just found genuine confusion, he continued. “They were all so shocked, it was weird. And then Shouyou-kun said that Rin and I don’t act as a couple. And…it got me thinkin’. I dunno what ‘acting as a couple’ means Samu, I never had any other partner before Rin.” He groaned again, desperation clear in his tone.
Osamu only hummed – again, he shouldn’t have known something was up – and Atsumu was about to call him for his complete uselessness but he refrained himself when he saw his twin’s face. The latter seemed to be seriously thinking about what he just said, if the small creases between his eyebrows were any indication.
“Do ya not like how yer and Rin’s relationship is?”
Atsumu remembers how taken aback by the question he’d been. He never even thought about that before because the answer was obvious to him. “Of course I like our relationship, and ya know it. Why d’ya ask me that?”
Osamu nodded and the wrinkles between his eyebrows disappeared as a small but genuine smile took place on his face. “Then that’s all that matters. If yer happy with yer relationship and if Rin is happy with it as well, then what others think don’t matter, Tsumu.” Atsumu was about to reply but the surprise of the sudden seriousness in his brother’s made him too slow, and so Osamu went on.
“Yer relationship has never been traditional, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a beautiful one. Anyone who looks at Rin and ya fer more than a few seconds can immediately see how much ya love each other.” He paused to take a breath and continued, determination clearly present on his face. Atsumu didn’t even know why his brother was suddenly so determined. (Atsumu from the future feels very dumb once again. He really should have known that something was up.) “Well, I guess it’s easier fer me and anyone from Inarizaki ‘cause we saw ya two pining like idiots fer too long, but it’s there Tsumu. It’s actually disgusting. Ya look and act like an old married couple.”
Atsumu never found himself so flabbergasted before and he couldn’t reply anything to what his brother had just said, so he just snorted at the last bit. Osamu ignored him and kept going as he, very surprisingly, had a lot to say that day. “Maybe that’s why they haven’t realized it. They all have partners, but some of their relationships are very recent. Ya and Suna have been together fer almost ten years, Tsumu!”
“Nine.”
“Whatever. My point still stands,” Osamu rolled his eyes. “Ya can’t act the same way as them when ya’ve both been together fer that long. But that doesn’t mean yer love is any less big than theirs. Any relationship is different, Tsumu. I dunno much about romance and shit, but Suna and ya are meant to be. I know that much.”
Osamu had apparently then finished his rant and Atsumu was still utterly speechless. He’s pretty sure he’s absolutely never heard his brother talk to him for that long about such a topic. It’s very out of character and he kind of wanted to joke about Osamu’s hidden romantic self but he’s cut by his twin mumbling a small “I’ll kill him” that Atsumu didn’t understand the reference to.
Atsumu can’t help but grin as he remembers his brother’s next sentence. Indeed, Osamu then raised his head to lock eyes with him and tried to appear as nonchalant as he could manage but he was betrayed by the very obvious embarrassed blush on his face. “I will never, ever, repeat any of that so you better have it memorized and we shall never talk about it again. Ever.”
Suddenly, another voice – one that Atusmu knows all too well – sounded in the room. “Don’t worry, I have it all recorded. I'll make sure you both never ever forget about this conversation.”
Atsumu turned his head so fast that he heard his neck crack. Rin was there. He was leaning against the doorframe, with his duffle bag thrown over his shoulder and his signature mischievous smirk on his face. He was there when he shouldn’t be because he supposedly had an important game that day. “Rin!” Atsumu exclaimed cheerily.
No matter how many years they’ve been together, seeing Rin never failed to make his heart jump out of his chest – it still does – and no matter how many surprise visits they’d done to the other, they somehow still never expected them. And the way they were both blindingly smiling at each other was proof enough.
Osamu groaned next to them. “ That is what I was talking about. Disgusting.” He said with no real annoyance in his voice as he faked a gagging sound. Although both Rintarou and Atsumu ignored him as they ran in each other’s arms the second the restaurant’s front door closed behind Suna.
“Yer here!” Atsumu grinned before he surged forward and captured his boyfriend’s lips with his own.
“Could ya not have waited like five more minutes?” Osamu screeched.
Suna snorted when he drew back from the kiss. “And miss yer corny as fuck speech?”
Atsumu laughed softly, still snuggled up in Suna’s arms, while Osamu turned red again. “Yer a shithead Rin. I panicked ‘cause of his stupid questions when I remembered yer visit!” He whispered-yelled, even though no one was in the restaurant except for the three of them, and pointed at Atsumu accusatively.
Atsumu frowned slightly at the weird formulation of his twin’s sentence but he didn’t get the chance to ask about it because the first clients of the day stepped into the restaurant at the exact same time Suna told Osamu to shut up. Weird.
Osamu only huffed in response, “Whatever. Get yer shit together Rin, and make sure ta thank me later.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Suna rolled his eyes. Atsumu definitely had no idea what this conversation was about anymore. “Let’s go, Tsumu. We don’t eat here today, I have somewhere to take you.” Then they left the restaurant to take Osamu’s car, in which there was already a basket on the backseat.
Atsumu still remembers that day as if it was yesterday. It was a beautiful, sunny Spring day and Rin had taken him on a picnic date in a huge field of grass decorated by thousands of small, colorful flowers. The trees around them were also green and full of flowers. Those were the main reasons why Atsumu’s favorite season was Spring. The landscape looked like one of a postcard. It was beautiful.
And it was just the two of them. Rintarou, too, was beautiful. Atsumu didn’t take the time to look at his outfit before as he was too occupied with hugging his boyfriend, but now that he can properly look at him, he noticed how Suna did make an effort in terms of his clothing. They’re both casual clothes enthusiasts, thinking that comfort reigned above all else — although Atsumu does enjoy proper clothing too. But that day, Rin was wearing a goddamn buttoned-up shirt, to which he left the two top buttons open. He was hot . But Suna still stayed Suna, so he was wearing a pair of simple but elegant black jeans, and his Converse. Accompanied with his usual jewelry, he still looked terribly handsome. Atsumu thanked his past self from that morning when he, too, dressed well even though he initially didn’t have anything planned. He just felt like himself that day and wanted to honor that by dressing up.
Atsumu loves picnics, and Suna’s always remembered it. Atsumu smiles as he remembers the first time he told Rin about it. The latter thought that Atsumu would like to be taken to pricey restaurants and had joked about how he would ruin him, but he laughed softly when Atsumu told him that what he actually preferred were picnic dates. And Atsumu never missed – and still never misses – an opportunity to make Rin laugh. Rin’s laugh has to be his favorite sound in the whole world.
That whole day went so fast. Time always flies when he’s with Rintarou. He remembers their lunch, a picnic that Rin prepared himself with all of Atsumu’s favorite foods, and their walk in the field where Atsumu could observe all the flowers he never really got the chance to see from this close. Nature is beautiful, he always thought so. He also remembers their endless conversations about everything and nothing. They didn’t see each other often due to their professional careers, so they would always make sure to tell the other every little detail they could think of about their lives apart. That way they were sure that the other didn’t miss a single moment of their life, no matter how far from each other they could be.
As they were peacefully walking hand in hand, Atsumu thought back to what Osamu told him a bit earlier. He had no doubt – and still doesn’t have any – about the fact that he and Rin are meant to be, but it was also true that their relationship wasn’t traditional. They didn’t see each other often, and they weren’t really into PDA unless they were tipsy or really, really tired. They liked having their private moments, moments that were only theirs to have, to cherish and to remember.
Yes, they did miss each other when they were apart, but they knew that this situation was only temporary. They both were aware of the length of an athlete’s career, so they both knew that their twenties were their peak moments. They would have never put themselves in between that, and they both knew it. They’ve always been absolutely transparent about their wants and needs regarding their professional careers. Which was why Atsumu didn’t care as much. He knew that, no matter how much time they spent apart, they would inherently come back to the other once they’re retired. It was a silent promise they both had made, even though it had never been voiced. They knew it in their hearts.
Well, it hadn’t been voiced until that day. Because, after having spent their whole afternoon outside, Suna took Atsumu to the restaurant for their dinner. This time, it was a pricey restaurant and Atsumu snorted as he remembered fondly their past conversation about it. The dinner was very romantic. Suna absolutely spoiled Atsumu, and Atsumu very much loved every minute of it. And then they went stargazing — another one of Atsumu’s favorite activities. The day had been so nice and sunny that there were no clouds at all, only the darkness of the sky enlightened by the moon and an infinity of stars.
Once again, Rin had found a place where there was no one but them. Rin looked absolutely ethereal under the moonlight. Even after nine years together, Atsumu sometimes still couldn’t believe that Rintarou was his. And then Rintarou turned to him, a loving smile on his face. They stared at each other for a few seconds and, at that moment, Atsumu had never seen that much adoration in his boyfriend’s eyes before. Suna’s love for him was so evident on his face that night that Atsumu still feels his heart flutter when he reminisces about the moment. Even now, eleven years later.
That night, under a sky full of stars, Rin proposed to him.
There has been lots of crying involved, as well as lots of promises. Because with that ring, they promised each other to always find their way back to the other. That no matter what would happen in the following years professionally, and no matter the distance that there would be between them, they would come back to one another. Because they’re meant to be. With that ring, they promised each other the rest of their lives, and the next one. With that ring, they promised to spend all their retired time together, in a house in the countryside where Atsumu could enjoy nature as much as he’d want to.
Rin also told him about how he went to ask for Osamu’s blessing, and that this was the reason why his twin had acted so weirdly romantically earlier in the day. Atsumu couldn’t help but laugh out loud now that he knew about it. He’ll make sure to tease him later for that. (He did tease him the next day and Osamu punched him. And then the latter took Atsumu in his arms for a bone crushing hug and congratulated him for his engagement.)
After that, Atsumu never once doubted anything about his relationship with Rin anymore. He wore his engagement ring every day. On his finger when he could, or hanging on a necklace when he couldn’t keep it to play volleyball, but he never once separated from it. He kissed it before every important game, and every night before falling asleep when he couldn’t kiss Rin himself because of the distance. As if it was even possible in the first place, Atsumu found himself loving Rin more and more every day. But every day during which he missed him just added to the immense joy he felt when he could finally see him again.
Their story might not be traditional, indeed, but it is a beautiful one. And Atsumu wouldn’t have it any other way.
🌹
Atsumu is being brought back to the present when he hears a deep groan coming from next to him. He turns his head and snorts fondly when he sees Rintarou rubbing his eyes in an attempt to remove the sleepiness in his eyes before stretching his body out. No matter how many years have passed, Rin still looks as beautiful as the first day he saw him. Except he frowns as soon as he looks back at Atsumu.
“Tsumu? What’s wrong?”
“Huh?” He answers, confused.
“You’re crying, baby.”
Huh? Atsumu brings a hand to his face and notices that his cheeks are, indeed, wet. “Oh. Uhh,” he chuckles. “Nothing’s wrong babes, don’t worry. I was just lost in thoughts.”
Rintarou doesn’t seem to believe him as his frown only deepens. The raven turns his body so that he’s resting on his stomach before he lifts himself up with his elbows to look at Atsumu’s face more properly. “You sure?” He asks, voice filled with worry.
Atsumu smiles and lets out a small puff of air. “Yeah. I was just reminiscing about the day ya proposed.” He says, grinning widely.
He sees Rintarou’s shoulders immediately relax when the latter understands that Atsumu’s tears are happy ones and that, indeed, nothing’s wrong. Then, Rintarou snorts and shakes his head. “My husband is a sap.” He says fondly before sending a blinding smile in Atsumu’s direction.
Atsumu is still smiling when he huffs in response. “Happy twenty years anniversary, darlin’.”
Rintarou smiles back, “Happy anniversary, Tsumu. I love you.” He stretched his arms out to caress Atsumu’s cheek.
“I love ya too, Miyarin .” Then, they both bring their faces closer to one another and lose themselves in a passionate kiss.
They both laugh when they get separated after some time by one of their cats meowing on the bed – a sign that they need to get up for breakfast. “Come on,” Rintarou says, “We’ll watch Osamu’s speech from that day during breakfast.” He added, smirky wickedly.
Atsumu guffaws. “Hell yeah!” He exclaims between two laughs as he watches Rintarou getting up from the bed to feed their cats while he also gets up to feed their dog. Rintarou takes a pajama ensemble out of their wardrobe and puts the shirt on before he gives the pants to Atsumu, deciding that he’s more comfortable in his boxers. Atsumu puts the pants on wordlessly and stays shirtless as he, too, feels more comfortable that way. Then they both (along with their three monsters) make their way to the living room
When the three children are happily fed, Atsumu sits on the kitchen island as he watches Rin preparing their own breakfast. And he can’t help but think about how this is exactly the domestic life they promised each other they’d have one day on the night Rin proposed.
That “one day” is today , Atsumu thinks, grinning almost manically. Today and every other day from now on. He can’t wait to see what the rest of their lives will look like.
