Denim Chore Coat

Summary:

Gwen finally wears the denim chore coat, but before she can, Miles has a trick up his sleeve.

Set a few weeks after the end of chapter fourteen of Better Halves; One-shot is based on a minor reference made in chapter two of Better Halves.

Notes:

There was one moment that stuck out to me in the early chapters of Better Halves, preferably the second chapter before Gwen and Miles visit Lundale District for the very first time. Before they leave, Gwen immediately wants Miles’s coat that he is wearing and I wanted to further expand on that.

If you’re a fan of my work, Better Halves, then I hope you enjoy this minor reference, but if you’re new, then reread chapter two! :)

Enjoy!

Their ages:

Gwen - 29

Miles - 28

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Looking at Miles, Gwen was a tad bit jealous of the denim chore coat he was wearing on top of the light brown shirt. Denim jeans and brown dress shoes aside, Gwen wanted that coat. Maybe she would have it after having gone out on a couple of dates, of course. Or permanently have it as a keepsake. Shaking the silly thoughts from her mind, Gwen greets Miles with a short wave, casually walking over.

— Better Halves, Chapter Two

-

There it was, perfectly laid out across the armchair.

Pleading.

Begging to be worn.

Gwen had a staring contest with the denim chore coat. This all started when Miles wore it during their first visit to the Lundale District and she’s been obsessed with it since. Mind you, that it was nowhere near chilly in New Jersey like the time the two of them had gone, so the opportunity to wear it was pointless. Still, cold or not cold, Gwen would not let the chance slip away. Before she could reach out to touch it, Miles’s bedroom door opens, and Gwen places both hands swiftly behind her own back.

“Hey, babe, were you waiting for me? I told you that you could go right ahead and eat.” Even while reminding Miles was irresistibly sweet. “Besides, that omelette I cooked for you won’t stay warm for long.”

“Right sorry. I was just, you know, waiting for you.” Gwen chuckles, nervously. “Like you said.”

“Hmmm.” Miles hums, not buying it. “Is that all you were waiting for when I was getting ready?”

“Nope!” she answers quickly.

“Really now?” Gwen immediately knew what was happening: Miles was going to repeatedly tease her until she had cracked. Miles picks up the coat, not breaking eye contact, even when he places it on. “Because it looks like to me like you were eying this special coat of mine.”

This time, Gwen shook her head, denying the accusation. She knows what is going to happen next when she notices Miles walking toward her, and her boyfriend believes she purposely does this because it’s occurred so many times. One hand gripped Gwen’s waist, drawing her close. Instinctively, Gwen’s hands find themselves placed on either side of Miles’s chest. He leans down and Gwen’s eyes close, expecting.

“Psych,” he says, releasing his hold. Gwen’s eyes were open, stunned by the sudden change of heart. “You wouldn’t last two seconds if I were to kiss you right now. Besides, I have other ways of making you talk.”

“Oh yeah? What other ways, Morales?”

Miles thinks and thinks. Then he quickly says, “I’ve got nothing!” before pulling Gwen back in, actually kissing her this time.

As usual, Gwen expects a full on make-out session, but Miles cuts it short with one. Not two, but three sweet pecks. Gwen wanted to reel him right back in after he slowly pulls back, smiling in satisfaction at his girlfriend’s frustration. Though he was a phenomenal kisser, according to Gwen, they didn’t have all day to stand in his living room sucking face. To Gwen’s surprise, Miles leans in again, but this time to land a kiss on her cheek.

“Okay. Okay, I wanted to wear it.” She gives Miles’s chest a light shove. “But the extra kiss was extremely uncalled for. That was a hook line and sinker kiss, Morales.”

He shrugs. “Don’t act like you didn’t like it.”

Gwen rolled her eyes in a playful manner. “So, can I wear it, Miles?”

“Sure. But on one condition.”

“What’s that?”

“Eat breakfast with me,” he says, turning her body and leading them both to the table. Gwen gives a ‘Deal!’ in response, taking a seat. Taking their plates, the two selectively take turns warming the food in the microwave before sitting back down. After washing dishes, they make their way over to the couch. After a few minutes had passed, Gwen gave a dramatic fake cough and Miles obeys, handing over the coat.

“Yay!” she shrieks and Miles thinks it’s the most precious thing in the world. After trying it on, she stares directly at her boyfriend. “What do you think?”

“It looks better on you than it did on me,” he complimented, flashing a smile. “No, really Gwen. It suits you.”

“Like it was made for me.” Although it was a tad bit oversized, yes. Yes, it absolutely was for the twenty-nine-year-old as she gazed lovingly at her boyfriend, smiling ear to ear. “Just like you were, Miles.”

“I couldn’t agree more.”

They share a kiss. “Miles?”

“Yeah?”

“I’m keeping this.”

“Wait, what?!” Before he could properly register what she had said, Gwen jumps off the couch and Miles chases after her, only to fail.

“I know where you live!” He warns.

Gwen stops, turns to him slowly, and says, “You know we’ve really got to work on your delivery.”

Then Miles realizes his girlfriend was in fact a few doors down from him, so that statement held no meaning. He face palms and Gwen cackles.

“Fine!” Miles sighs. “You can keep it for a week.”

“Okay and oh, Miles?”

“Yeah?”

“If you don’t mind, would you make me another omelette?” Gwen requested, and Miles places a hand over his heart, taken aback. “Seriously, the best omelette I’ve ever tasted. It reminds me… It reminds me so much of home.”

Miles smiled. “Of course. Only if you come back my way, will I grant your request.”

“Sounds tempting.” Came her flirtatious reply.

Gwen walks his way, embracing him. Miles kisses the top of her head, fingers combing through her long, wavy locks. She looks up. “I love you.”

“I love you too, Gwen.”

“Miles?”

“Hmmm?”

“Is there a two week offer on the table?”

“Babe…” Miles warns, and Gwen drops it.

“Hey, can’t blame a girl for trying.” With a chuckle, Gwen nuzzles into his chest as the two happily sway, holding one another.

As the two eat another helping of Miles’s homemade breakfast omelette, Gwen has never felt more full in her life. It had nothing to do with the consumption of food; it had to do with Miles. He made her life full every single day. Ever since, he knocked on Gwen’s apartment door to deliver Margo’s wedding invitation addressed to her. She wanted to savor every single moment. As they bid the other farewell, she couldn’t wait for the very next day when Miles would yet again make her crave for more time with him.

After all, Miles did in fact know where she lived.
