Napping With My Love

Summary:

Even on a mission, Hitoshi falls asleep with the secret love of his life on his phone… The secret being that Izuku doesn’t know he’s the love of Hitoshi’s life. Though maybe this three month mission in the states will change that because there’s a slip of the tongue and conversations to be had now.

I hope you enjoy this fic!!

Work Text:

Hitoshi is on a mission in New York, and he has been for the last three months. However, he finally wrapped things up an hour ago. He’s currently being walked up to his hotel room by his Mission Handler and one of the top Underground Heroes in the States. He’s just ready to get on and do his Facetime call with Izuku and tell him the news that he’ll be coming home soon. Hitoshi is so tired that he knows he’s going to have to tell Izuku the news quickly because otherwise he’s going to fall asleep as soon as Izuku says hi to him. He’s grateful that he’s been able to communicate with Izuku over the past three months because otherwise he’d miss his sleeping buddy and wouldn’t be able to sleep.

Hitoshi has gotten far too used to sleeping next to Izuku over the past few years, especially after spending all of their final year at UA napping together. Nobody was surprised when they moved into an apartment together and only used one room, curling up together to sleep. Everyone has been betting on them getting together since they were first caught napping together two months into their final year. They’d been laying on the floor while studying, and they ended up falling asleep, Izuku’s hand in Hitoshi’s hair while Hitoshi’s arm was slung around his waist, and they were smooshed together. It looked uncomfortable according to their friends, but it kickstarted their consistent naps together because it was the most comfortable they’d been in a while.

“Thank you, Mind Meld for escorting us to our rooms. Hitoshi, our flight is at eleven-thirty, so we will meet down in the lobby at eight-fifteen. Don’t be late.” says Emairi, his handler, before he turns around and goes to his door across the hall.

“Yes sir.” mutters Hitoshi before he waves at Mind Meld and pushes his way into his hotel room.

He has about an hour before Izuku’s going to be able to call, so he decides to hurry through showering and packing his things back up for the flight home. That takes him a good forty-five minutes, and soon he’s flopping onto the bed and pulling up his messages with Izuku and telling him that he’s ready for their facetime call when he is.

Izuku’s sleeping face pops up on his phone moments later, and Hitoshi answers the Facetime with a soft smile.

“Hey, Zu.” says Hitoshi quietly as he adjusts himself under the comforter, setting his phone up against the other pillow on the bed.

“Hey, Toshi, how was your day?” asks Izuku with a sleepy smile as he curls up more in view, one slow blinking eye showing just above the purple comforter that Hitoshi knows is his merch comforter.

“It was good. We’ve wrapped up the mission, so I’m coming home later tonight.” replies Hitoshi quietly as he leans further into his pillow, the scratchy material making him wish he had his soft, Deku pillowcase with him. “How was your day?”

“That’s great! When are you getting in? Do you have to go to your agency for the final debriefing with your boss, or have you done that already through your handler? Are you flying into the same airport you flew out from?” Izuku starts rambling, and Hitoshi can’t help but snort at him as he ignores the question Hitoshi had posed all because he’s stuck on Hitoshi’s return. Izuku’s eye re-focuses on Hitoshi and there’s the slight pink to his cheeks as he buries his face in his pillow for a moment before tilting back and answering the question. “My day was good, just paperwork and meetings because we’re launching a few new quirkless and mutation quirk support programs and the agency building has finally been signed over to Kacchan and I.”

“Oh, Zu, that’s wonderful! You’ll be able to start prepping the agency and scouting potential sidekicks and other Pros! That’s going to be great.” says Hitoshi with a soft smile as a yawn leaves Izuku and has him covering his face more with his comforter. He takes a second as a yawn tears through him, then he goes about answering the questions Izuku asked him. “I’ll be getting in very late, or early depending on how you look at it, but there’s going to be a car waiting because I have to do a quick debrief to go over a few things that will affect my agency and other heroes that were on this from home. So, I’ll probably get home after you go to work in the morning, but I’ll be there when you get off. I have to take a week off work after this because I already signed up for the break at Zawa’s insistence.”

“Yeah, we’re going to be working on setting the agency up tomorrow actually. Kacchan already ordered all of the furniture, and Eijirou has the day off too, so all three of us are going to be organizing the furniture around the building. It’s a small two-story building, but it’s wide and has enough room for a training space that Mei is going to come and outfit for us in a couple days. We’ve taken the next two days off to work on setting things up and going through paperwork to start pulling heroes to our agency.” Izuku starts to ramble despite the way his yawns keep breaking up his words, and Hitoshi can feel himself being lulled to sleep by the rambling as is typical for them. “What’d you do after finishing the mission? Did you eat?”

Hitoshi fights sleep because he wants Izuku to go to sleep first tonight since he fell asleep first last night, and Izuku ended up staying up another hour and a half before managing to fall asleep. Izuku’s eyelids start to droop, and Hitoshi knows he’s going to fall asleep soon.

“Yeah, I ended up stopping at this Olive Garden. I was craving spaghetti with the four-cheese sauce, and the breadsticks were next level. They did really well, even though it felt a bit more expensive than back home. We also ended up walking around to get pictures because I didn’t really get much of a chance to take as many pictures as I promised that I would.” Hitoshi lets himself ramble as he watches Izuku start to drift off, talking about New York and the sights that he managed to capture pictures of for Izuku to look at when he gets home. Once the snores start up, Hitoshi sighs and brushes the back of his knuckle against the screen. “I can’t wait to come home to you… Fuck, ZuZu, I love you.”

Sleep tugs at him as he stares at his sleepy Izuku, wishing that he’d had the guts to confess that to him when he was awake, but he’s still incapable of saying that to an awake Izuku. Finally, he yawns one last time before melting into the slightly stiff mattress and falls asleep.

He doesn’t know how long he’s slept, but he knows it wasn’t as long as he would like. Hitoshi rolls over when he doesn’t see a phone, shifting slowly and sleepily as he tries to pull himself awake.

“What time’s it.” groans Hitoshi with his raspy, sleep-addled voice as he rubs at his eye while grabbing his phone with his free hand to hold the phone above his face, squinting to try to make out the time.

The clock on his phone reads 8:05 a.m. as Izuku whines, "Fuck, that is evil, you're too fucking hot when you just wake up, and I just wanna be able to kiss you, what the fuck?"

Hitoshi blinks, then blinks again, and then he clears his throat and asks, “Zu… Did you just call me hot and say you want to kiss me? When I’m fourteen hours away and unable to see you until late anyways? That’s really evil.”

“Wha-wait, uh, wait, I-” Izuku is gaping at the phone like a fish, looking far more awake than he had a few moments ago when the appreciative gaze pulled words from his mouth.

“You’re the one complimenting me over the phone and talking about kissing me, dunno what you’re so surprised for, I just woke up to it.” replies Hitoshi amusedly as he sits up, pulling his phone with him to keep his bare shoulders and face in the camera. “We’re gonna have to have a talk when I get home, aren’t we?”

“Or, and this is just an idea, or we could talk about it now because it would save us a lot of trouble and panic.” offers Izuku as soon as he’s done staring in surprise and confusion, his cheeks flushing prettily over the camera.

“Freckles, we can put it all out there right now, I don’t mind.” replies Hitoshi softly, knowing that this could end badly before he goes for it and puts all of his feelings out there without any hesitation. “Izuku Midoriya, I am in love with you. If you wanna move back to your room, go ahead. I can probably find a new apartment after I get back home.”

“You- I- You- L- Oh.” Izuku stutters through his clear surprise before cutting himself off and taking a moment to breathe and figure out what he wants to say. “Hitoshi Shinsou, I am in love with you too, and I cannot wait to have you back home with me. You’re not moving out, and I’m not moving back to my room. We’re just going to be more than roommates and napping buddies now, and I’m beyond excited about it.”

Hitoshi’s the one gaping now because this was not an expected outcome, not even in his wildest dreams did he think Izuku would ever reciprocate these feelings that he’s had since their final year at UA. It’s silent as Hitoshi stares at the phone and Izuku stares back, almost like they can actually look each other in the eye despite the distance and phones between them.

“O-okay… So, that’s- that’s not what- I wasn’t expecting that. I’m really happy, don’t get me wrong, super fucking happy, but I- I wasn’t expecting that.” says Hitoshi quietly as he stares at Izuku’s blushing face, watching the way his lips curve into a bright smile even over the grainy phone picture. “We can discuss it more once I’m at home, but I gotta get off the call. I’m supposed to be meeting my handler in the hotel lobby so we can head to the airport for our flight in six minutes. Get some more sleep, and I’ll see you back at home after you're done working tomorrow.”

“See you when you get in, Toshi, love you.” says Izuku as his grin softens into a sweet smile.

“Love you too, Zu.” replies Hitoshi before they end the call at about the same time.

He changes into sweats, tugging his hood up over his head before he heads down to the lobby, getting down there a minute past time, much to his handler’s clear annoyance. But then they’re headed to the airport, and quickly boarding a private jet that apparently was organized an hour prior to get them home faster. They also end up doing the debrief on the plane using the wifi, and Hitoshi ends up curled up asleep across a row of seats in the back of the plane as soon as they’re done because his paperwork was already faxed over after doing it during his interrogation like he typically does during these missions.

“-jack. Mindjack, get up. Mindjack!”

Hitoshi jolts, sleep still weighing heavily on him as his hero name is said loudly. He blinks sleepily at Emairi before stretching out and yawning as he asks, “Are we finally back home?”

“Yeah, we’re getting off now. Come on, there’s a car waiting to drop you off at your apartment.” says Emairi with an air of annoyance as he glares down at him.

“Oh, nice, thanks.” huffs Hitoshi with an eye roll as he rolls off the seat and pushes himself into a standing position, stretching high until his back pops down his spine.

Emairi walks off the plane without saying another word, and Hitoshi follows after him moments later. He quickly grabs his bag as Emairi is talking to a driver, and then he’s helped into another car. It takes everything in him not to fall asleep again with the lull of the car moving, but he manages it. He’s gotten back to Japan at six o’ clock on the dot, and that’s at least two hours earlier than expected, but it means he might get to see Izuku before he goes in to do his agency work.

When the car jolts to a stop outside of his building, Hitoshi thanks the driver and pulls out some money to drop a tip despite them being a contracted driver because they moved quickly and safely considering the distance between the private landing and his apartment. He gets his things out of the trunk of the car and heads into his apartment without saying another word, hoping that he’s going to get lucky and there will be a sleepy Izuku in his bed.

As he gets into their apartment on the bottom floor, he sees shoes missing from their shoe rack, and he pouts. It seems he’s gotten there too late because Izuku’s shoes are gone, and the apartment is deathly silent, not even the sound of piano music playing like usual when Izuku sleeps when they’re not on the phone.

Hitoshi heads to their room, leaves his luggage by the door, and flops onto his empty bed, the sheets feeling cool beneath him. He pulls out his phone to message Izuku that he’s back home, and then he lets sleep tug him under again, this time hoping it keeps him under for as long as it takes Izuku to come back home.

He’s jolting a little bit later, feeling like he’s only slept for ten minutes, when the front door of the apartment slams shut, rattling the creaky building and pulling Hitoshi from his sleep. There’s a moment of silence before the bedroom door opens, and Hitoshi has barely a second to sit up in time before Izuku comes flying at him, tackling him to the side.

“Toshi, you’re home!” squeals Izuku excitedly as he hugs him tightly around the neck, his legs bending at the knee around Hitoshi’s thigh as he ends up pressed against the bed.

“Zu, I thought you were doing agency stuff today, what’re you doing home?” asks Hitoshi in his raspy sleep-addled voice, still trying to wake up as his arms are full of an Izuku, an arm wrapped around his waist and a hand gripping a thick thigh to hold him in place.

“You said you were home, and I’d already told Kacchan about our whole talk, so he told me to come see you. I get an hour before he comes and explodes our door in, and you’re supposed to come to squad movie night tonight, Kacchan says.” replies Izuku with a sheepish smile as he ducks his head forward and buries his face in Hitoshi’s neck. “It’s good to have you back, Toshi.”

“Ah, blasty has made decisions for me again. That’s alright, I’ve been missing the squads, so it works for me. It’s good to be back, Zu, and it’s good to see you again, missed seeing your curls and freckles in person.” says Hitoshi as he leans back a little and uses his fingers to lightly pinch Izuku’s chin and lift up his face so he can look at those freckles framed by green curls. “There you are.”

“Hi,” says Izuku shyly as their eyes meet, and his cheeks flush with a soft blush that has Hitoshi brushing the back of his knuckles across the freckled skin softly. “I’m really glad you’re home, Toshi.”

“Hi, Zu, I’m really glad I’m home too.” replies Hitoshi softly, cupping Izuku’s cheek with his hand and leaning forward to lightly brush the tips of their noses together before pulling back and smiling at him. “You interrupted my nap, Zu, so how much longer do you have? I think a duo nap is in order.”

“I probably have like twenty-five minutes before Kacchan comes and blows up our door, but I’m down for a nap if you are.” replies Izuku amusedly with this soft look in his eyes that has Hitoshi’s cheeks heating up as it’s directed at him.

“Sounds perfect to me, tell Alexa to set the alarm. Maybe we can keep the door from disintegrating.” says Hitoshi as he carefully maneuvers Izuku until he can wrap around the other man like normal, one arm under his head and the other wrapped around his waist as Izuku follows his instructions and scoots back until they’re pressed completely together.

The alarm is set, per Alexa’s loud vocalization, and Hitoshi buries his nose in Izuku’s curls, breathing him in as his body relaxes quicker than before.

“Nap time, Toshi.” says Izuku before he starts humming lightly, his hand tugging Hitoshi’s up until he’s holding it against his chest.

“Night, Zu.” replies Hitoshi through a yawn before sleep yanks him under with perfected ease with Izuku’s warmth welcoming him in.

If they end up having to replace their apartment door again, well that’s Katsuki’s fault for not simply using his key like he knew he could. If Hitoshi ends up promising to help with the agency the next day as well as buying the snacks for squad movie night just to get Katsuki to let him sleep a little bit longer, then that’s his consequence according to Katsuki for being gone for so long.

He wouldn’t change a thing… except maybe to have been able to nap longer with Izuku in his arms, but they’ll be able to go to sleep again soon enough.

It’s so good to be home.
