Dusk Till Dawn

Summary:

When Jay disobeyed orders to stay away from the guy that killed his dad and got shot Hank is angry.

Jay faces the consequences of his decision and he also deals with an angry brother as well.

Notes:

This idea came from my editor and we have agreed on most of the idea and came up with different ideas for this story.

I love writing stories where Will is confidant and he doesn't worry about money.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Lower Columbus Drive And Lower Wacker Service Area October 3, 2018.

Jay sits in the back of the ambulance and he is getting treated and he is lucky that the built only hit his arm.

Hank was pissed off and he was angry at Jay for disobeying a direct order and he was going to let the omega know how angry he was.

Hank walks up to the ambulance and the paramedics tell him Jay was lucky to survive and that he needs to take a few weeks off work but apart from a few bruises as well he is ok.

Hank thanks the paramedics and he asks if he can speak to Jay and they say they will give him some privacy.

Both paramedics leave Jay and Hank to talk and they go and grab something to eat.

Hank walks up to Jay and he can tell the omega is going to argue back and to be honest Hank doesn't have the patience for it.

“Before you open your mouth you are going to listen” Hank says and he uses his alpha voice and Jay stays silent.

“I'm so angry at you not only did you put yourself in danger and disobey a direct order you put your other fellow officers in danger and you are acting like you don't care so I'm suspending you for a few weeks and when you come back to the unit we will be having serious conversation on how you acted” Hank says.

Jay looks at his boyfriend and alpha and knows this is his boss talking and he better follow his sergeant's orders.

Hank looks at his boyfriend and he knows he is just trying to cope with how he feels about his dad dying but Hank needs to think about his team and right now that's what he is doing.

Hank walks back to his team and tells them Jay is going to be ok and he is dealing with the situation and he tells them to go home and they all nod.

Hank gets out his phone and calls Will and tells him what's going on and Will is pissed off and tells Hank he will come and get Jay and give his little brother a piece of his mind.

Hank gets off the phone and he looks at Jay but he is angry at him so he goes and checks with the other police officers to make sure they are doing their job.

15 minutes later Will pulls up in his car and he gets out and he looks around and when he sees Jay he goes to him and gives him a massive hug.

Jay is not happy that Will was called and he really doesn't want to see him but one look from his big brother tells him to keep his mouth shut.

“I know you're not happy that Hank called me but I don't care and we will be talking when we get to mine and Connor’s place” Will says and he grabs Jay's shirt and helps the man get up and leads him to the car.

Will nods to Hank and helps his brother into the passenger seat and Will gets into the driver's seat and drives away.

30 minutes later Will and Jay have pulled up to Will and Connor’s apartment and they both get out of the car.

When Will came back to Chicago he was already in a relationship with Connor Rhodes as the two met while they were overseas in Saudi Arabia and they both got paid very well out there so Will had money and he invested some into some properties and other things and his money has grown so when everyone met him and Connor then Will could say he was never dating Connor for his money and it showed as he loved the man completely.

Jay was shocked to find out not only was his big brother dating the legendary Connor Rhodes but that his brother was very rich made him nearly pass out as far as he knew Will was still paying off his student loans but looks like not.

Both Halsteads head into the apartment and Will is glad that his boyfriend is out walking their dog.

Jay looks around the apartment and he walks into the kitchen and he sees some paperwork on the counter and he goes over and looks at it and sees it's an application for the chief of the emergency department.

“That is none of your business” Will says and he takes the paperwork and he puts them into his safe.

“So I don't get to know how things are going in your life?” Jay asks and he is angry.

“Do not take that tone with me” Will says and his voice is now showing signs of the alpha in him.

Jay hates it when Will uses that tone of voice and he may be the alpha but they are brothers so he is not going to bow down to him so easily.

“I'll speak to you in whatever tone I want,” Jay says.

Will is getting sick of the way Jay is speaking to him and he knows it's down to their dad dying but it doesn't mean Jay gets away with it.

“Enough. I get that your angry Jay and I know dad was not perfect but what you did was so stupid and now you're acting like you have the right to be pissed off well news flash baby brother you lost that right when you disobeyed your sergeant's orders” Will says.

Jay stands in shock and he can't believe Will would speak to him like that and he goes to leave but the door opens and he comes face to face with Connor Rhodes.

When Connor opens the door he is not expecting to see a half naked Jay Halstead in his living room and he looks to at the man and he sees he is injured and looks to Will and the redhead's face shows that they are in the middle of an argument.

Kol runs past Jay and goes straight to Will and the man bends down and makes a fuss over the dog.

Jay looks at what's going on and he can see that his big brother was just scared.

“Kol come on buddy food time” Connor says.

Kol trots off to the kitchen and all three men laugh at the dog.

Connor leaves Will and Jay alone and he hopes nothing gets broken.

“I'm sorry I didn't mean to scare you” Jay says and his voice shows that what he says is true.

“Jay it's not just that, it's the fact that you completely disobeyed Hank's orders and you are acting like you think that's OK so I'm sorry but it's going to take me a while to forgive you” Will says.

“I understand and I'll make it up to you” Jay says.

“Let me show you the spear room,” Will says.

Jay follows his brother to the spare room and Will tells him that he can stay here for a few days but Jay says he is going to leave in the morning and Will nods and leaves.

Will goes in to the kitchen and tells Connor that Jay's only staying until morning.

Connor knows that Jay hasn't dealt with his dad dying and from what his boyfriend and alpha told him it took Jay a long time before he got over his mother's death but he is going to keep an eye on Jay and if it comes down to it he will talk to Dr Charlie's.

A few hours later both Will and Connor go to bed and they tell Kol to go to his own bed well one of them as the pup has 4 beds in different places but his main one is their bedroom.

Kol gets up from his bed and he goes up the stairs to the spare room and he climbs on the bed and snuggles up to Jay and the detective lets the dog into his bed and brings him closer.

Chapter 2

Summary:

Jay faces the context of his actions but he seems to be struggling and lashing out.

Hank abd Will are worried about Jay.

Jay makes a decision to go and see an old friend.

Notes:

When I was writing this chapter I didn't have any intentions of bringing in 9-1-1 but after I looked at it and and rereading it I'm happy wiry my decision.

Also for this chapter i wanted to focus on Jay's mental health and how he is struggling with his dad dying as the show messed up that.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Jay woke up early the next morning and he still had Kol lying next to him and Jay just lied there and thought about yesterday's events and he was still angry with how his boss/boyfriend called his big brother.

Jay knew that he shouldn't have disobeyed orders but at the same time his boss had no right calling his brother without his permission.

Jay got up and he changed into his jeans and put his shirt back on and by that time Kol had woken up and he followed Jay out the room.

Jay goes into the kitchen and grabs some paper and he picks a pen up and writes a note to Will saying he has gone back to his place.

Jay gives Kol a hug before he leaves and then walks out the door.

Jay takes a few deep breaths and he then decides to get a taxi and once the taxi arrives he gets in and tells the driver where to take him.

It doesn't take long for the taxi to arrive at Jay's apartment and the man pays the driver and he gets out and heads into his building and gets to his apartment and he opens the door and once inside he closes the door.

Jay goes to his bedroom and puts his phone on charge and then he goes to take a shower.

30 minutes later and Jay comes out and he is a little bit more relaxed and he turns his phone on and he gets a text from Hank telling him once he comes in to head to his office.

Jay ignores it and takes his time getting ready and he makes himself a cup of coffee and then he goes and leaves his apartment.

Jay walks into the station and he sees Trudy at the front desk and he goes over to talk to her.

Trudy sees Jay coming over to the desk and she can see the wound that he got last night and she is not impressed with him but looking at his face it's like he doesn't care.

“Morning Trudy and how are we?” Jay asks.

“I'm fine. How are you doing?” Trudy asks.

“I'm doing good, Trudy,” Jay says.

Trudy looks at Jay and she thinks that he has lost his mind but at the moment she won't say anything.

“Well nice talking to you Trudy I'll see you later” Jay says and he walks upstairs.

Jay gets into the pit and everyone looks at him and he goes to his desk and takes off his coat and sits down.

Hank comes out of his office and he sees Jay and he knows the man read his text message.

“Detective Halstead get in my office now,” Hank says.

Jay gets up and he goes into Hank’s office and he just stands there.

“You are suspended from the field and you are on desk duty until I decide you're ready to be out on the streets” Hank says.

“Is that all?” Jay asks.

“Jay you got shot and you disobeyed an order” Hank says.

“Yeah and I'm not arguing about my punishment and you know what you had no right to call Will without my permission so you need to face those consequences” Jay says.

“Jay you had been shot and you weren't listening to what people were saying” Hank says.

“Don't bullshit me, you disregard my boundaries and I am allowed to be angry,” Jay says.

“Don't speak to me like that” Hank says.

“Or what,” Jay says.

“Don't push me,” Hank says.

“Screw you and screw this team” Jay says and he walks out the office.

“Detective Halstead you are suspended so hand in your shield and gun” Hank says.

Everyone looks at Hank and then they look at Jay and Jay walks up to Hank and gives him his gun and shield.

Jay walks out the pit and heads out the station and he heads back to his apartment.

Jay is back at his apartment and he is angry all over again so he gets changed into his gym gear and goes to the gym and once at the gym he goes to the kickboxing bag and puts his headphones in and starts his work out.

All the rage he is feeling and the anger towards people all comes out and Jay is finding with every kick and every punch he is starting to get his feelings in order.

Jay takes a break and he gets himself a drink and he sits down on the bench and he starts to get his breathing under control and while doing that he thinks about how he feels and yes he put himself and his team in danger but they have all done the exact same thing so why is he getting treated differently.

Jay's phone keeps going off and he looks at it and it's texts from the team and he ignores them.

Jay gets back up and he goes back to the bag and he has another work out and this time Jay just lets himself be free.

2 hours later and Jay is finished with his work out and he knows what he needs to do.

Jay gets back to his apartment and his brother is waiting for him.

“You know I'm really getting sick of people not respecting my boundaries” Jay says.

“Hanks just worried about you and so am I,” Will says.

“I'm fine so you can leave” Jay says.

“Jay this is not like you and you're scaring me” Will says.

“You know what Will maybe this is me and you all can't accept it” Jay says.

“No this isn't you and you need help” Will says.

“What I need is people to get off my back and leave me the hell alone” Jay says and he opens his door and goes in and slams the door in Wills face.

Will is shocked with how Jay is reacting but he looks at his watch and sees it's nearly time to start his shift so he leaves.

Jay puts his gym bag on the floor and he goes and sits on the sofa and he takes his phone out of his pocket and he unlocks it and he has a message from his boyfriend saying he doesn't know what's going on with him but he knows he is not OK and as much as he loves him he won't let him back to work until he gets help.

Jay doesn't bother to respond and he goes and gets himself something to eat from the kitchen.

While Jay is eating there is a knock at his door and he goes and sees who it is and when he looks through the spy hole he sees Kelly Severide standing there.

Jay opens the door and he greets the squad lieutenant and lets him into his apartment.

After closing the door Jay asks if Kelly wants a beer but the man declines and just says he is checking on him and Jay appreciates it.

After a few minutes Kelly leaves and tells Jay if he needs anything to call him.

Jay gets his laptop out and he goes into his bedroom and sits in the bed and he starts to look at flights to Los Angeles and he sends a text to a friend of his who he hasn't seen in a long time and after doing that he goes to sleep.

Notes:

Next chapter Jay arrives in L.A and he goes and sees Buck plus we get more insight on how they know each other.

Chapter 3

Summary:

Buck finds out about Eddie’s little hobby and he is pissed off and he decides to make other people aware of it.

Bobby faces some harsh truths and the man sees that he has put his job at risk.

Notes:

Buck makes his appearance and he is going to make sure people know that he won't be treated like someone who doesn't know what they are talking about.

Jay sees how Buck is different from the last time they saw each other.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Los Angeles Buck's Apartment.

Lena Bosko stood outside Buck's front door and she was in two minds on whether or not she should be here or not.

Lena knocks on the door and if no-one answers in 5 minutes then Lena has her answer but unfortunately Buck answers the moment she knocks.

“Lena this is a surprise” Buck says and he is shocked to see her.

“Hey Buckley I'm sorry for just stopping by but I need to speak to you as you need to know something” Lena says.

“OK come in” Buck says and he stands aside to allow Bosko entrance to his apartment.

Lena enters and she is surprised by how nice it looks and how clean it is.

Buck closes the door and he goes and stands in front of Lena.

“So what is it you need to tell me?” Buck asks.

“Look first of all I never meant to tape over your name and I'm sorry I did that but I believe you had every right to file that lawsuit against Captain Nash as he clearly treats you differently and I have proof” Bosko says.

“Thank you for saying that and what proof do you have?” Buck asks.

“I'm not proud of myself but I'm going to accept any consequences that happen to me” Lena says.

“Still not hearing about the proof you have” Buck says.

“Eddie is taking part in an illegal underground street fighting ring and Captain Nash is completely aware of it” Bosko says.

Buck is completely shocked and he is angry.

“When did he start taking part?” Buck asks.

“It was a few weeks ago I took him to the first one but it wasn't as bad when I brought him but he quickly got addicted and he ended up hurting someone but it's like he doesn't see that he is going to lose everything” Bosko says.

Buck is raging at not only Eddie but also Bosko as well but he sees that she has accepted her part in showing Eddie that world and as she said she will face the consequences for her actions.

“Thank you for telling me but I need you to leave” Buck says.

“Of course. I am really sorry for showing him that world” Bosko says and she leaves.

Buck goes over to the counter and he calls chief Alonzo and requests a meeting and chief Alonzo says he is free at 1pm and Buck says that's fine and Alonzo asks what's it about and Buck says its regarding Captain Nash and the 118 and Alonzo says to come in at 11 am instead and he hangs up.

Buck looks at the time and it's 9:30 so he needs to leave soon as he wants to be there early.

Buck finishes getting ready and he makes sure he has got his phone, his car keys and his wallet but before he leaves there is another knock at his door and he goes and opens it and stood right in front of him is his best friend Jay Halstead.

“Jay, what are you doing here?” Buck asks after hugging his friend.

“I thought I would come and see you but you're going out?” Jay asks.

“Yeah I have a last minute meeting with the chief of the 118” Buck says.

“That's cool I'll just book into a hotel” Jay says.

“No you won't. You're staying here” Buck says and grabs Jay's duffle bag and he walks back into his apartment.

Jay follows his best friend and closes Buck's door and looks around the apartment.

Jay sees that it's big and spacious, the kitchen is amazing and looks like Buck paid top dollar for it and the living room is just as amazing and the couch looks really comfortable.

“So I'm probably going to be about 2 hours so feel free to use the shower or make yourself something to eat and then when I get back we can hang out here or go out and grab a bite,” Buck says.

“No problem man and thanks I appreciate it” Jay says.

Buck hugs his friend again and then leaves to go to his meeting.

Once Buck left Jay decided to go for a shower and try to relax.

After the shower Jay comes out and he has a towel wrapped around his waist and his hair is damp and he walks into the kitchen and makes himself a cup of coffee.

Once Jay has the coffee in his hand he looks around Buck's apartment and he sees some empty picture frames on the wall and the bookshelf and he wonders what pictures were in them.

LAFD Headquarters.

Back pulls up outside the front entrance to the LAFD Headquarters and he gets out of the jeep and goes inside the building.

He walks right up to reception and asks the woman behind the desk if she could let Chief Alonzo know that Evan Buckley is here; the secretary says that's fine and for Buck to take a seat.

Buck takes a seat and he gets his thoughts in order and thinks how he is going to word what he is saying as he doesn't want it to come across like he is being spiteful.

Chief Alonzo comes down to reception and he sees Buck sitting in the lobby waiting for him.

“Firefighter Buckley” Chief Alonzo says as he walks towards Buck.

Buck gets up and he shakes Alonzo's hand and they both walk to the elevator and head to Alonzo's office.

Buck sat down and Alonzo took his own seat and he looked at Buck and waited for the man to speak.

“At 9 am this morning firefighter Bosko knocked on my door and she asked to speak to me as she had information about firefighter Diaz and captain Nash” Buck says.

“What information did she have?” Alonzo asks.

“It turns out that firefighter Bosko has been taking part in an underground fighting ring and she has introduced firefighter Diaz to it who seems to be addicted to it as Diaz nearly killed someone and he had to phone 9-1-1 and Bosko has made captain Nash aware but the man hasn't done much and I believe Diaz still has his job” Buck says.

Alonzo is shocked to hear this and he hopes that Buck has the wrong information.

“Firefighter Buckley, are you telling me this as it’s the right thing to do or are you telling me because you want to hurt the reputation of certain members of the 118?” Alonzo asks.

“Chief Alonzo I'm telling you because it's the right thing to do and because again this shows that Captain Nash thinks he has the right to treat people differently when in fact we should all be held to the same standard” Buck says.

“Your right we should all be held to the same standards as each other and it's clear that Captain Nash needs to learn that the hard way” Chief Alonzo says.

“I know this is going to come across as me being petty but if you need to confirm it then I'm happy to wait until you have spoken to both Bosko and Nash” Buck says.

Alonzo gets up from his desk and goes and tells his secretary to get in touch with Firefighter Lena Bosko and Captain Robert Nash and tell them he wants to see them immediately and the secretary says she will get on that right away.

Buck goes and waits in another room as he doesn't want to see Bobby at all.

Lena Bosko pulls up at the entrance to the LAFD Headquarters and as she gets out of her car she sees Bobby getting out of his and she knows why they both have been called.

“Captain Nash” Lena says.

“Lena what are you doing here?” Bobby asks.

“I just got a phone call telling me that chief Alonzo wished to speak to me,” Lena says.

“I got the same phone call. Do you possibly know why he wished to speak to both of us?” Bobby asks.

“I have no idea,” Lena says.

Both Bobby and Lena walk into headquarters and they get told by the receptionist to walk up to chief Alonzo's office as he is waiting for them and they head to the elevator.

Once the elevator has stopped at the floor Alonzo works on both Lena and Bobby walk out of the elevator and the chief is standing in front of them.

“Captain Nash I'm going to speak to firefighter Bosko first so please wait here until I call you” Alonzo says.

Bobby nods his head and sits down.

Alonzo and Bosko go into Alonzo's office and he closes the door and Bosko sits down.

Once Alonzo sits down he gets some paper and a pen and he looks at Bosko.

“Firefighter Bosko I have been informed that you have been taking part in an underground street fighting ring and you have introduced firefighter Diaz to it” Alonzo says.

“Yes chief” Lena says.

“I have also been told that you spoke to Captain Nash about how Diaz has become addicted to it and that you told Nash that Diaz nearly killed a person,” Alonzo says.

“Yes, that's correct,” Lena says.

“Can you tell me how you found out where firefighter Buckley lives?” Alonzo asks.

“A few days ago me and the rest of my team were responding to a call at another apartment building and after we had handled it and made sure the victims were OK and they didn't need to go to hospital I was walking back to the truck and I looked over and I saw Buckley leaving the building and I looked at the address and wrote it down as I do believe that what Captain Nash is doing to Buckley is unfair and he has no right to treat other firefighters differently” Bosko says.

“OK thank you for coming in and answering my questions. I'll let you know what consequences you are going to face once I have made a decision” Alonzo says.

“Thank you chief and whatever you choose I'll accept” Lena says and she leaves the room and leaves the building.

Alonzo leaves the room and he asks Bobby to come in.

Bobby closes the door and he takes a seat.

“Captain Nash I've been informed that firefighter Diaz is taking part in an illegal underground street fighting ring and he has become addicted and nearly killed a person but you seem to still have him working at the 118” Alonzo says.

“Chief Alonzo firefighter Diaz is going through a lot as you know his wife died and then his son caught up in the tsunami so I didn't feel like it was a good idea to suspend Diaz but get him help instead” Bobby says.

“Really you didn't think that a firefighter who is breaking the law and is clearly not fit for duty shouldn’t be suspended” Alonzo says sarcastically.

“I was trying to help him and I didn't want him to lose his son,” Bobby says.

“That wasn't your choice to make Captain Nash” Alonzo says.

“I thought I was doing what I thought was right,” Bobby says.

“And that's why you are being sued because you seem to think that certain firefighters should be treated differently from other firefighters,” Alonzo says.

“Eddie’s son had been through a tsunami and he had lost his mother so I didn't think it would be a good thing for his dad to lose his job and go to prison” Bobby says.

“My heart goes out to the boy but he wasn't the only one who was in that tsunami and you should have immediately put Diaz on leave so that's another thing that shows you treating another firefighter differently” Alonzo says.

Bobby is shocked and he knows who put the complaint in and Bobby is going to make sure Buck never comes back to the 118.

“Before you try and blame Buckley for this it's your own fault as you were made aware of what Diaz was doing but chose not to report it” Alonzo says.

Bobby doesn't know what to say and he knows that Bosko came to him and he spoke to Eddie but clearly it's not working and now he is being pulled up.

“Captain Nash, I want you and firefighter Diaz in my office tomorrow at 9:30 am sharp and you will find out the consequences for what you both have done. Now get out of my office” Alonzo says.

Bobby leaves and he knows that he is going to lose his job as he broke major rules and this can be used against him in the lawsuit that Buck has filed against him.

Alonzo goes and heys Buck and tells him that he has spoken to both Bosko and Nash and everything Buck said is true and Nash and Diaz will face consequences.

Buck does say that he hopes that Bosko won't get in too much trouble as she has come forward and she knows she did wrong and Alonzo said that her punishment won't be as bad but it will be the right punishment.

Buck thanks the chief and he leaves the building and he decides to go to a Taco Bell and grab some food for him and Jay.

Notes:

The next chapter is when Jay and Buck open up to one another and they both agree to have each other's back.

Bobby and Eddie face the consequences of what they have done plus Lena shows that she is accepting her punishment.

Notes:

Jay finds out the consequences of his actions and how his behaviour has affected his boyfriend.
