These Guys Aren't Normal, and That's OK

Summary:

Discord friend @eardefenders has graciously hosted a prompt for each day of June, Pride Month! Plus a bonus potato. These are my entries. Beware: limericks

Chapter 1: "Birthday"

Summary:

OMG What's that SMELL WHERE GOOD GOOD GOOD
WHY ARE YOU MAKING NOISES AT ME GIVE ME THE GOOD
LOOK I'M WAGGING *twerks*

Chapter Text

Canine Cake Substitute

His eyes shine, all watery-bright
His birth being honored tonight
He looks like a fool
Beginning to drool
Wish they'd hurry and give him a bite

Chapter 2: "Color"

Summary:

There are many colors in the Sherlock tales. I'll focus on the people themselves.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Jonk Identifies as a Cinnamon Roll

The show is completely on audio
Debate goes all around on what we know
About Sherlock's hues
Whether browns, pinks, or blues
But John is for sure a blond himbo.

Notes:

We love you Jonk. Yes, you can be a protective grizzly, but you are also a cuddly teddy bear and that is awesome. I understand that "himbo" can have negative connotations, but not the way I'm using it. It means you're strong, blond, and pretty and says nothing of your brain (which is pretty darn smart).

We love you too, Sherlock. You've given us no clues as to your colors, but somehow most of us think you are a lovely shade of coffee with black hair. Whether or not that's right, it works for me. Go get a hug from your bear.

Mariana, your Spanish background has solidified you in my mind as black-haired and olive-skinned, with big brown eyes. You love bright colors for your clothes and always have flowers on your desk. What a star

Archie, woof woof, pant pant pant. whine woof. skritch skritch *behind the ears*

Chapter 3: "Small"

Summary:

A grain of sand can feel huge in your eye. Imagine the other end...

Notes:

I have always thought it was the wrong move to name the goose. She's going to be someone's dinner; don't get friendly. But maybe once you have your microphone up her ass it's time to get more friendly. I dunno.
Merry Christmas?

Chapter Text

Poor Heidi

All things have relative size
A rock may be large to fruit flies
At least this one's small
That blue carbuncle
Get that out of her safely now, guys

Chapter 4: "Hug"

Summary:

Sometimes you just need some proprioceptive stimulation from your best friend, ok?

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

3-2-1-Awwwwwww

A weighted blanket is grand
The contraption can give him a hand
But Sherlock likes best
When he's close to John's chest
In a hug that makes his heart expand

Notes:

I may drown in sweetness if I keep this up. Isn't there angst to be had in Sherlock & Co? Of course, but it doesn't feel like the themes that grab me. I guess I'll keep writing what comes to mind and you'll have to watch your portion sizes and diabetic tendencies.
*HUGS*

Chapter 5: "Dream"

Summary:

Well, well, well. Here we have John in the realm of the unreal, thinking and wondering if they could become real.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Triangulation

Visions are essential John lore
He has daydreams and nightmares of war
Fantasies recent
Are quite far from decent
There are two that he'd like to see more

Notes:

I am an unrepentant trio-shipper for Mariana, John, and Sherlock in this adaptation. I realize they won't go near that with a ten-foot pole on the show but *my* fantasies do. They just have such good friendly chemistry among them, and that's the basis for a good relationship of any kind. Love them.

Chapter 6: "Restaurant"

Summary:

When you want to debrief with drinks but not in your own boring living room, off you go to the pub.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Another Round, Please

John sure likes having a beer
Mari likes it fruity, with cheer
Sherlock might resign
Himself to some wine
After cases at The Volunteer

Notes:

*In my mind, Mariana's a margarita girl, but I'm sure she is impressed by a good mojito the way I am. ("Hi, yeah, um do you have a good sweet mojito? Reeally fresh mint? Ok, I'll try one just to see. Thanks. OK guys, what happened from the beginning.")

*John appreciates a Guinness among whatever else is on tap. Lots of it, please. ("They gave me a, a steel liver in the army. Heh I really shouldn't, I'm a doctor for God's sake, but you know. YOLO and all that.")

*Sherlock isn't against mood-altering substances, but I imagine he'd rather do them in a safer place for him to let down his defenses. Not, you see, in a pub. ("Do they even have anything of good character to pair with ..pretzels? And boozed up companions? ugh")

Chapter 7: "Crying"

Summary:

Sherlock helps John with sleep when his emotions are overwhelming.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Midnight Serenade

He screams up from the nightmare again
That one full of terror and pain
Among all the dying
He can't keep from crying
So Sherlock will calm down his brain

Notes:

Our dear John, stricken with memories, sometimes needs help sleeping through the night. With his brilliant and talented friend on hand, at least that part of life has gotten easier. Sherlock may not be great with social cues, but he cares for his Watson and has made a study of things that help him. Andante or slower melodic violin in a major key seems to engender a good response after one of his nightmares. The fact that it lets him watch John fall asleep and gives him an excuse to stay a while by his bedroom door...well that's just an extra benefit.

Chapter 8: "Costumes"

Summary:

John might be feeling some jealousy....

Notes:

They were in disguise, but why did John have to wear the tights? One wonders. One spends many minutes staring at the ceiling and wondering.

Chapter Text

Hmmm, Yes

Upon learning of a past with Vince
John began dropping some hints
Perhaps to remind
Sherlock of that time
He'd said John was a "handsome prince"

Chapter 9: "Together"

Summary:

This trio works like a well oiled machine now (sort of?), but they didn't immediately hit it off. It took at least a day

Notes:

No notes. Just happiness. Hug someone today.

Chapter Text

He Grows On You

These three are "sold as a set"
Clicking soon after they met
'Twas not *right* away
As there was some dismay
Over how strange their Sherlock can get

Chapter 10: "Fruity"

Summary:

I had an image that wouldn't stop shaking me until I agreed to write it. Here, have a few limericks about Mariana and clear cherry lipgloss. 😉 They make a really loose outline of an evening with Sherlock and John if you squint.

Notes:

Definitely not canon, but head cannon for me. :) Mariana is not a goddess, but she's got that "put together" air of someone who gets things done around an office. John and Sherlock would probably pile bills and checks on a table, and maybe John would look at the pile every week or so. There's way more exciting things to do and recordings to edit. Mariana, though, she's on top of things. She's good at telling them what to do when it comes to business.* She's good at telling them what to do in other ways too.

*Sherlock tells them what to do when it comes to solving cases. John tells them what to do when it comes to medicine or hitting things. It's a good balance.

Chapter Text

Patient? Not So Much

Her lips shine with clear cherry gloss
She's a friendly sort, rarely cross
She knows Sherlock favors
Her choices of flavors
But John most likes that she's a boss

Clear cherry gloss on her lips
Her attitude: hands on hips
The men try to say
Why they spent cash that way
But they know they both acted like dips

Clear cherry gloss on her pout
She's had it with them, now she's out
She'll sleep downstairs
Let them straighten affairs
When it's fixed, then she'll come back about

Clear cherry gloss on John's neck
She's giving him more than a peck
It seems they're forgiven
The trio is driven
They're done keeping themselves in check

Chapter 11: "Social"

Summary:

Sherlock wasn't interested in the Silver Blaze story that EVERYONE was talking about. What the heck? John and Mariana needed him to get on this. They got devious.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Anti-Party

The scandal about Silver Blaze
Has been all over socials for days
But Sherlock won't budge!
They concoct a nudge
Some party plans knock his malaise

Notes:

I absolutely understand Sherlock here. I, too, would search for a murderer over attending a party, especially a business party. But those bills need to be paid, and John and Mariana know he can figure this out if anyone can. And if you can't trust your partners to emotionally manipulate you lovingly, who can you trust?

Chapter 12: "Big"

Summary:

There's a place this automatically goes in my head. Bad head. Bad. Anyway, let's go there.

Notes:

This is the limerick wherein Chicken humbly invocates the johnaconda, podcast-style. Johnpaconda? Johnaponda? Now I'm just thinking about podJohn as a panda. I think I went too far oh but he's adorable as a panda. I might be tired. Panda!Jonk someone draw this

Chapter Text

That Energy

It's nearly as thick as his wrist
John's business can hardly be missed
A miniscule sway
As he walks away
Gives pause to those watching him list

Chapter 13: "Afraid"

Summary:

Before we met him, John went through lots of phases, like everyone. In one of those phases, he was a skater boi.

Notes:

I can just see John with the floppy long-in-front skater hair practicing his flip kicks and sliding down railings as a teenager. Board shorts, band t-shirt, backwards baseball cap. No elbow or knee pads on this guy, even though he knows it much less safe that way. That's the point. That's the whole point.

Chapter Text

Addiction of Another Kind

Fear is a good motivator
John felt it when he was a skater
That adrenaline fix!
Now he's getting his kicks
With Holmes as an investigator

Chapter 14: "Public"

Summary:

They're a team, Sherlock and John. Mariana is part of it, but even she knows the boys compliment each other in the Work really well.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Useful AND Pretty

Sherlock's not great with the clients
The public don't like it when he vents
He needs his John
For tact and for brawn
While he's finding a theory that makes sense

Notes:

John, Master Deflector, works with Sherlock, Master Inflictor. Both are good Master Debaters, especially lately.

Chapter 15: "Laughing"

Summary:

It's good to laugh in bed, just don't point.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

He Does Too, John

If he can make Holmes laugh out loud
John feels particularly proud
Except when in bed
"That's rudeness", he said
"Most people like how I'm endowed!"

Notes:

Sometimes SOMETIMES laughter is a cover for the nervous feeling you get when slightly worried about the size of the thing and how the hell that's going to fit. (I bet there's a single word in German for that.)

Either that or Sherlock's just more of a classical Greek guy.

Chapter 16: "Future"

Summary:

Better together, as they say, although in this case "better" means maybe more blood than before. More fun, though?

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Day to Day For Now

One doesn't think much of a future
When running two steps from a suture
With Sherlock to guide
And John hitting his stride
They're better off now as a two-fer

Notes:

I feel bad about the grammar but not bad enough to change it. In case you aren't aware, a "twofer" refers to the pair of objects you can buy at a 2 for 1 sale -- in parts of the United States, at least

Chapter 17: "Flowers"

Summary:

Everyone needs a pick-me-up at a desk job. You can get on Mariana's good side by bringing her a bouquet.

Chapter Text

Cutting Flowers

Mariana likes working with flowers
They sit on her desk as she glowers
Down at the accounts
Cuts checks that don't bounce
Their sweetness cuts right through her sours

Chapter 18: "Holy"

Summary:

When Pod Jonk met Pod Sherlock, bleeding ensued.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Stab Me, Plz

Holy cats, there's a crazy man bleeding
Holy cow, this is such a strange meeting
“The hypothalamus
Cuts down pain in a fuss”
Where a “fuss” keeps your heart quickly beating

Notes:

Ok I worked VERY HARD to rhyme hypothalamus in a way that fit. I would be so chuffed if you, dear reader, could comment with a better one. Suss, a bus, hair a-muss etc. Succubus doesn't really fit the theme....

Chapter 19: "University"

Summary:

Sherlock didn't do well in structured education, but we all know his mind is beautifully gifted. He's family-, school-, and self-taught.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Special Interest: Solving Murders

Because of Sherlock's own perversity
He never went to University
Despite that truncation
He's good at mentation
And using his neurodiversity

Notes:

I love how autistic Pod!Sherlock is. As soon as I started listening to the show, I emailed the writer and told them how good it was to find representation here. I'm not diagnosed myself, but I have close family members on the spectrum. Stimming is normal. Being highly literal - normal. Disliking crowds and trying to talk in them - normal. Contrary to some beliefs about autistic people, he does enjoy social interaction with supports like the ear defenders. Normal. Misreading social cues and depending on a loved one for context - normal normal normal. Get him on a special interest, and you'll find a wealth of information in that noggin. And John and Mariana! They're so accepting and supportive of their friend! I adore them all.

Chapter 20: "Love"

Summary:

Poly thruples have to start somewhere.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Polymer Chemistry

Love came quietly to two twenty-one
Lives saved, breathes and laughter all done
That spark moment press
Eyes questioned, said yes
What distance they had became none

When love grew beyond just their two cares
They found Mariana was theirs
She knew their measures
And dreamed of their pleasures
And one night they met on the stairs

The trio spreads loving like frosting
Enough for each one, no one costing
The others affection
Tri-phasic connection
Though schedules can be exhausting

Notes:

This is so soft, I know. I want it to be soft. Yes, Sherlock is sharp and pointy, but he's not always. And I think John and Mariana would know how to soften his edges. You can imagine his role here in any flavor of sexuality from platonic to fully bisexual and invested. The point is *they love each other*, however that love is shown. I imagine there's a lot of snuggling with pressure on Sherlock in the middle for that proprioceptive pleasure. Then he'd have enough and retreat to his chair while John and Mari had a nice snog on the couch. Probably a documentary on the TV that he finds interesting. :D

Chapter 21: "Running"

Summary:

To live a life of danger, you need to be smart, quick, and have an eye for quality footwear.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Business Expenses

On cases they use all their cunning
Avoiding, they hope, any gunning
To that end they speed
Quite a lot, so they need
To invest in some good shoes for running

Notes:

In the US of A, we'd call that a tax write-off. Do you even pay yearly taxes in Britain? Or is all the government money taken directly from wages?

Chapter 22: "Lie"

Summary:

Sherlock thinks deeply about his character now that he has John and his giant audience to notice him.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Morally Grey

"Adhering to truth is obedience;
Lies have too many ingredients"
Holmes ponders this koan
Knowing John’s faith alone
Makes him question his own expedience

Notes:

John, eating popcorn, watching a Bond film: "Hey Sherlock, whatcha thinking about?"
Sherlock, staring at the screen and seeing nothing: "Whether it's better to always tell the truth, or if there is a moral imperative to lie in certain situations."
John, looking at popcorn with concern: "..."
John: "Did Archie get into this before I did, Sherlock. Sherlock. Am I eating dog spit. "
Sherlock: "..."
Sherlock:"...No."

Chapter 23: "Work"

Summary:

In any version of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, there's subtext. Just a ton of subtext.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Like Magnets

Working together is great
Sherlock and John fit like fate
When they’re on a case
They rarely embrace
But nobody thinks that they’re straight

Notes:

This could work for any Holmes and Watson, but I'm still thinking of Sherlock and Co for this. They won't be talking about a romantic relationship on the show, but even if they are platonic, there's something more. There's deep caring, and there's strong hugs, and there's protective streak in each that goes way over normal. You do you, guys. Be happy.

Chapter 24: "Wish"

Summary:

Work/life balance is even harder when you're a danger slut.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

War and Peace

"If wishes were fishes...
we'd want other dishes"
John ponders this koan
Tries to find the right zone
Between boring and fighting militias

Notes:

I like to think that when John was a boy Carol said "If wishes were fishes, we'd all eat like kings". But all John could think was that he'd be pretty sick of fish after eating it all the time. What king would want fish for every meal? A merman? Do Mermen exist? Are they like mermaids? Do they eat people? Would he eat me? Then that thought spiraled a bit, and he'd take a nice cool shower.

Chapter 25: "Kiss"

Summary:

Everyone mishears "Purple Haze". It's OK, John.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Bi Aural Beats

Young John liked a classic rock mix
"Purple Haze" by guitarist Hendrix
It said "Kiss the sky"
but he heard "Kiss this guy"
No doubt his ears were playing tricks

Notes:

"A binaural beat is an illusion created by the brain when you listen to two tones with slightly different frequencies at the same time." https://www.webmd.com/balance/what-are-binaural-beats

A Bi Aural Beat would be a rhythm heard by a bisexual guy. :D

Chapter 26: "Myth"

Summary:

Sherlock: the man, the myth, the disaster

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Safety is Tedious

Sherlock is a man almost mythic
He thinks he is quite scientific
Experiments abound,
Theoretically sound,
But with techniques too far from terrific

Notes:

Did he even think about the biohazard situation he was creating while bleeding all over the treadmill?? And he treats his own body as a chemical experiment every time he takes street drugs. This man needs to retake Laboratory Safety 101. Or maybe he just doesn't value his life highly enough. John, get on that.

(At least pod!Sherlock doesn't seem as bad as bbc!Sherlock in this respect. I shudder every time the food space gets invaded by laboratory specimens and chemical experiments.)

Chapter 27: "Book and Sports"

Summary:

Sherlock's been taught that it's not polite to stare. He's trying for John now, sometimes.

Notes:

I'm getting tired, and the deadline is approaching fast! Time to smoosh some prompts together and hope they stick.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Side Glance

John knows more things about sports
He looks good in his old rugby shorts
Sherlock won't look
Keeps his nose in a book
His peripheral vision reports

Notes:

I can't remember if pod!John played rugby in school or not, but I'm certain he would have for fun. Hence, shorts. Man, I'm not as young as I used to be. In college I could stay up until 4am finishing an awesome laboratory report and get it done. Now I'm tired at 11pm. Ha! Moving on...

Chapter 28: "Family, Pride, & Potato"

Summary:

When you've lived with someone long enough, you get to know what they like.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

One Can Order for All

The Baker Street family has pride
In their food quirks they take in their stride
Sherl's penne/tomato
John's steak and potato
And Mari's brown sauce on the side.

Notes:

This is the last one! With this limerick I've completed the 2024 Sherlock & Co Pride Prompt Challenge. With 21 minutes to go hahahahhahahha I'm so tired. :D Anyway, I just like the idea of John, Sherlock, and Mariana knowing each other's likes and dislikes so well that it's trivial for anyone to order off the menu. That doesn't even have to come with the polyship. Just working and living together and being friends will do it! I'll tell you a secret. I made up John's and Mariana's food quirks, but I believe they have them heart and soul.
