All of the Stars

Summary:

"There's something I really want to do, and I can't risk the universe trying to pull some crap. Not now, not with this. It's too important. So I'm putting my plans out there, letting the universe know, asking for permission."

OR

Tommy comes home to find Evan on the roof, talking to the universe.

Notes:

Prompt response: "Evan, would you please come down from there?" It ended up being longer than I though, and I'm kind of proud of it, so I figured I would post it here.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

"Evan, would you please come down from there?" Tommy yells, crossing his fingers that his boyfriend doesn't fall, because given Evan's luck, it was very possible.

He had come home from his shift to find Evan on the roof of their house, laying with his legs stretched out, arms bent upwards, cushioning his head with his hands. He seemed almost at peace, and Tommy would have left him to it if Evan wasn't on the roof.

"Babe, stop yelling, you're gonna wake the neighbours." Evan doesn't even bother looking at him, just continues to look up at the sky.

Tommy's exhausted, he really is, and all he wants to do is go to bed, but he's not just going to leave Evan up there. Dropping his duffle, he makes his way to the ladder Evan set up and climbs to the top.

"So, uh, what are we doing up here?" Tommy asks, settling beside his boyfriend. He rests his head on Evan's chest, throwing an arm over his waist, tangling his legs with Evan's. One of Evan's arms wraps around him, pulling Tommy tighter to him.

"Getting permission."

"Permission? From who? And what for?"

"Permission from the universe. I've tried to hide from the universe before, y'know? Just quietly doing my thing and hoping it doesn't notice and throw more stuff at me. But it never works. Something always ends up going wrong. It's like the universe is saying "you thought I wouldn't see? Well, watch this.""

Evan is carding through Tommy's hair just the way he likes, and Tommy's eyelids grow heavy. He lets them fall closed as he hums in acknowledgement, hoping Evan will continue talking. He loves the way Evan's voice sounds, soft and warm and like the rest of his life.

"I thought this time, I would do things differently. There's something I really want to do, and I can't risk the universe trying to pull some crap. Not now, not with this. It's too important. So I'm putting my plans out there, letting the universe know, asking for permission."

"H'will y'know when it answers?" Tommy's slurring his words, not ready to fall asleep yet, not ready for this moment to be over.

"Not sure. I think I'll just know."

"You'll know the answer, too?"

"Mhm."

"Wha'tr you askin' for?"

Evan doesn't answer for a few moments, Tommy's breath slows and evens out in the quiet of the night. Evan watches the night sky for a bit longer, the sounds of the universe fading away until it's only Tommy's snores. He yawns, rubs his eyes, and gets ready to wake up his boyfriend so they can go to sleep, when something catches his eye.

He watches as a shooting star passes through the dark sky, leaving a fading trail of light behind it. It's beautiful, and it knocks the air out of Evan's lungs; because that's it. That's the universe's answer, the one he's been waiting and hoping for.

Evan smiles, pressing a gentle kiss to top of Tommy's head, doing his best not to disturb him.

"I was asking the universe to give me permission to marry you, and I think it just said "yes"."
