Work Text:
Buck was going through hell right now. Hell in the form of the flu. The damn thing snuck up on him in the middle of the night. Though he is most definitely blaming Chimney for sneezing on him. Buck could barely move, it was like every nerve-ending he had was on fire. The worst was his leg. He had to resort to using his crutches to even get to the bathroom.
The blond didn't want to move but as fate's favorite punching bag he didn't have a choice. He just wished Chris hadn't been involved.
It was in the middle of the afternoon when the ringing of the phone jerked him awake. With a groan Buck shifted to retrieve it off the night stand.
"Hello?"
"Is this Mr. Evan Buckley?"
"It is. Who are you?" Buck tried to move to sit up. He was panting by the time his back hit the headboard.
"I'm Ms. Jennings. The office secretary here at Durand. I'm calling because Christopher Diaz came to the nurse's office saying he has a stomachache. The nurse took his temperature. Christopher is running a hundred and one fever."
"Shit. Did you call Eddie Diaz?" Buck was struggling to get out of bed.
"We called four times. There was no answer. Nor were we able to get a hold of Carla Price. I'm sure you know she is listed second for medical problems."
"I am aware. I'll be there as soon as I can."
"Thank you, Mr. Buckley. Just call when you are close and we'll have Christopher in the front office." She instructed before hanging up.
Buck fell several times getting dressed, then stumbled down the stairs nearly taking a head dive. His fever was making him tired and the pain making him uncoordinated. Nevertheless he grabbed a mask from the box Hen left by the door that morning. He had called for an Uber because he couldn't drive in his state. Buck told the driver he will pay him double to get to the school fast, wait for him, then drive fast to the hospital.
They managed to make the whole drive barely an hour. Buck was true to his word and even gave the driver an extra two hundred dollars. The driver was also nice enough to carry Chris inside for him.
Buck had checked Chris in the car. Finding out that Chris had appendicitis. He informed the nurse at the desk, He and Chris were taken to a room right away. The doctor came in ten minutes later. Buck knew this doctor.
"Mr. Buckley, can you tell me how long he has been in pain?"
"I can't. I just picked him up from school. Chris, buddy, when did the pain start?"
"Last night before dinner. I didn't want to eat but Ms. Flores made dad tell me to eat. I threw it up shortly after. Dad put me in bed after giving me some medicine. He took my temperature and said it was a ninety-nine. I heard him tell Ms. Flores I was staying home. She said she will stay with me. After dad left she forced me to get dressed and she drove me to school. She told Ms. Mason my fever was gone."
"You won't have to worry about Ms. Flores again. Your dad is definitely ending that relationship."
"Christopher, we are going to remove your appendix after we get your fever down. Now, Mr. Buckley, tell me what is wrong with you?"
"The flu. My fever is high and my body hurts so much. My leg the most. Hence the crutches."
"We'll get you some pain meds and fluids. You can rest while Christopher is in surgery. I'll have a nurse wake you when we're done."
"Okay. And if Eddie Diaz shows up, can you bring him here?"
"Of course."
Buck doesn't remember much after that talk. He was sound asleep by the time his nurse left the room. Fingers through his hair woke him up. He found Eddie sitting next to him still in uniform.
"What is going on?" Eddie's voice was tight.
"Ana sent Chris to school. They called me because they couldn't get a hold of you or Carla. He was running a one oh one and saying his stomach hurt. I brought him here. They took him to surgery to remove his appendix. The doctor gave me fluids and pain meds for my flu."
"Dios, Evan. I was so worried when I finally got to check my phone. We got stuck on the Ten with a multiple car accident. Carla needed the day to renew a certificate for one of her patients. I'm going wring Ana's neck for taking him school. I explicitly told her to keep him home. Seriously you think as a Vice Principal you would know that a kid with a fever and vomiting can't got to school for twenty-four hours after the fever is gone. I'm going to report her for this."
"Good. What she did is child abuse and child endangerment."
The doctor came in, cutting their conversation short.
"Christopher is fine. The surgery was routine. Lets get you checked over, Mr. Buckley." The doctor examined Buck right away. "Your fever is down to ninety-nine. How is your pain?"
"Almost manageable. I think my leg is going to hurt for a while."
"We'll do a quick exam in a couple of hours. For now let the fluids and medicine do it's job. Mr. Diaz, do you have any questions?"
"Can you bring Chris here?"
"We'll have to wait until Mr. Buckley's fever is done. I'll have a nurse take you to your son momentarily."
"Thank you, doctor. Buck, do you want me to call anyone?"
"No, I'm good. Just go see Chris."
"I'll come back when he goes to sleep. Thank you." Eddie kissed Buck's forehead before leaving the room.
A week later Eddie asked Buck out for a date. He did it in front of Christopher who got excited, his dad and his Bucky are boyfriends (his words).
Across town Henrietta Wilson got a feeling she just lost a bet.
