Flowers

Summary:

Chuuya comes home to something surprising

Yet entirely expected

Notes:

Work Text:

Chuuya isn't huge on flowers. Sure, they are beautiful and he does enjoy walking through Ane-san's garden, but that's different. To see flowers in their natural habitat is nice, relaxing, even.

Cut flowers have less of a calming effect on him, though.

The only time he sees them is in bouquets, lining the coffins or gravestones of his deceased men. His deceased friends .

There's been so many bouquets, he was almost positive he'd seen every iteration. Every way to convey every type of love, every form of emotion flowers can.

Leave it to Dazai to prove him wrong.

When Chuuya returns to his apartment late at night he expects to see that idiot lounging on his couch, but what he doesn't expect is a messy bundle of flower heads floating in a ceramic pillow-vase.

Definitely a new approach.

In the far too classy vase are the only three flowers he knows to meanings to:

Red camellias- love, passion and desire.

Plum blossoms-resilience and perseverance.

Then right in the middle is the largest flower, the one that leaves the heaviest weight on his chest, the blue clematis.

A flower that symbolizes cleverness, loyalty, faithfulness, and admiration.

He's seen these flowers in bouquets, but never together. When they were teens, they were the only flowers Dazai explained the meaning of, despite swearing he knew the meaning of all the others. Chuuya had asked him why only tell him these three, Dazai had assured him they were the only ones he needed to know.

"That was a pretty long game you played, Dazai." Chuuya finally says, earning him a lazy smile from the other man.

"I don't know what you mean."

He knows Dazai by now, too well for his own liking.

This isn't some random act of kindness. Nor is it a prelude to Dazai proposing.

He knows exactly what he's asking, what he's giving permission to do.

Of course he has rings, bought them at 18 when he had too much cash and had resigned himself to his inevitable destiny that was Dazai.

Even when Dazai left, he knew damn well they'd reunite and this would happen eventually.

He certainly wasn't expecting flowers , though. Dazai knows he has no interest in caring for cut ones, which he supposes is why it's only the heads floating in a bowl.

"You put a surprising amount of thought into this." Chuuya mutters and Dazai laughs.

"I was a very thorough 16 yr old."

Sixteen, huh? Dazai had known he'd be with Chuuya forever at sixteen.

Somehow it feels like he's won something with that knowledge.

Chuuya can't help but smile to himself before he disappears into his room. He returns with a basic black ring box, Dazai already standing in anticipation.

The brunette's face looks so soft, so happy, that Chuuya can't even bring himself to tease him.

Yet.

Getting down on one knee, Chuuya asks Dazai to marry him. A formality, really, but he's pretty sure if he doesn't do it by the book this idiot will throw a fit.

Dazai says yes immediately, before Chuuya can even open the ring box. Once he does, though, Dazai's eyes go wide in a rare moment of true surprise.

There's two matching rings. White gold bands lined with red and black diamonds.

Chuuya obviously knows more about jewels than Dazai does, even if the bastard was in control of the jewel trade before him. Thanks to his time running it, though, even Dazai knows how expensive these are.

"Chuuya went all out, huh?" Dazai teases after he regains his composure, "I'm not sure I'm suitable for something so fancy."

"Probably not," Chuuya shrugs, taking Dazai's ring out and sliding it on his finger, "But I have an image to uphold, and if they aren't matching then what the hell's the point?"

Dazai laughs as Chuuya stands up and holds the remaining ring out to him, "You spend too much time with Ane-san," He teases, taking the ring out of the box and sliding it onto Chuuya's finger, "What if I lose mine?"

Chuuya rolls his eyes, "I'll buy you another." He smirks at the man in front of him, "This is chump change to me, after all."

"Oh my~ I'm so blessed to have such a rich and doting husband."

They share a look for a moment before bursting into laughter.

Husbands.

They'll have to marry out of the country, but still . After 8 years of knowing each other, they'll soon be husbands . Just the thought feels like some kind of relief, like a final piece to a puzzle being slid into place.

Dazai leans down and presses his forehead to Chuuya's, his eyes shining with the same relief, "Do you think we'll be like this forever?"

They both already know the answer, so Chuuya just scoffs, "I wouldn't have spent /five hours/ in a jewelry store at 18 if I didn't."

"Five hours, huh? I'm so loved ." Dazai boasts, wrapping his arms around Chuuya's waist.

Chuuya rolls his eyes, "Somehow." He teases before tilting his own head up and meeting Dazai for a kiss.

Notes:

Chuuya originally got simple rings, but Kouyou saw them and sent his ass right back to /do better/.

With this I will now return to my actual fics lol sorry
