Summary
Starling understood that he was being selfish, that Astarion was excited for a future he had no idea did not include him. For every second Starling withheld the truth, he likely earned himself another tenday in Avernus, but it had never felt like the right time. There was always a bigger threat to focus on, and Astarion already had so much on his plate.
No, Starling was a coward, that's what it came down to in the end. He was scared of losing what precious little good he'd managed to carve out for himself amidst their shitstorm of a situation. Once that tentative peace was broken, he knew he'd never find it again, so he clung to it as tight as he could.
