Chapter Text
Amy and Sonic have always orbited each other, even if the other couldn't even realize it. She had always been in love with him, and can’t think of a time before she wasn’t. It was clear as day and everybody could tell, although it wasn’t really a secret either — For Amy, her love for Sonic was more than just a “crush”, as many could believe, it was a deep, unwavering, strong affection that had been nurtured over the years. Nurtured by every smile, every shared adventure, every act of bravery, and every moment of kindness he had shown her.
New elementary school, new student, new girl in town, and ever since since she stepped foot in that classroom in third grade, this new girl had been enthralled with the classroom’s established IT boy. Admittedly, he was the most beautiful boy she’d ever seen, quite a bold statement for an 8 year old girl, although young love has always been surprising, really young love. For her, his smile was the kind that could light up the room, and his eyes, oh, his eyes were like two green gems that sparkled with a soft, mesmerizing light — that, truly captivated her. Every time he laughed it was like music to her ears, a sound she found herself longing to hear more and more often, plus, that recurrent picture of him talking with his classmate, smiling, was how she truly saw him for the first time.
He was someone who made her heart race with a single glance.
Amy couldn’t help but hope. She would daydream about him, imagining what it would be like if he knew her name, if he smiled at her the way he smiled at everyone else. Well, not everyone else of course, she wanted that smile towards her to be more special, and maybe, just maybe, there would be a moment where their paths would cross, where he could see her not as just another new face, but as someone worth noticing.
Perhaps her thoughts were listened by the gods above; she didn’t have to keep hoping.
The day would come a few months later, when she would least expect it. In the time she had been at her new school, she had already been warmly welcomed by her classmates, quickly becoming a friendly face that many enjoyed talking to. Despite her efforts to strike up a conversation with Sonic, it always seemed just out of reach! He was too fast, darting out of the classroom the moment recess began, eager to spend his free time racing around the playground, leaving her no chance to catch up.
Fortunately, she found a new friendship, a girl she could always count on. Blaze was more than just a friend; she was a kindred spirit with whom Amy shared endless moments of joy and laughter. Their bond grew so strong they began to feel like sisters, with Blaze naturally stepping into the role of the protective "older" sister, always ready to catch Amy when she stumbled or offer comfort when needed.
Then came the much-anticipated day of the school picnic. With a mix of excitement and determination, Amy enlisted the help of her parents to create something special: cupcakes. She knew that these sweet treats would be a surefire hit among her classmates, after all, what child could resist cupcakes? As she carefully carried the tray to school that morning, her heart swelled with pride and anticipation. Each cupcake was a little masterpiece, adorned with swirls of vibrant, colorful frosting that made them appear as if they were kissed by rainbows. The sight of them, carefully arranged and glistening under the morning light, filled her with a deep sense of accomplishment.
Upon arriving at the picnic, the reaction was immediate and heartwarming—her classmates' eyes lit up with delight as they discovered the sweet treats. Even Sonic, always so focused on running and playing, couldn’t resist the temptation of those desserts. For Amy, this was more than just a small victory; it was a moment of profound significance. Her efforts were not merely acknowledged but genuinely appreciated, making her feel warmly embraced by her peers. As the new kid, being so well-received felt both charming and excited. Her soul soared with the joy of knowing that her simple gesture of sharing had made a meaningful impact, especially on Sonic, adding a special touch to her day.
Sonic approached Amy with a tentative smile, his gaze falling on the tray of cupcakes she had so carefully prepared. Before reaching for one, he looked at her with a subtle, almost questioning expression, as if seeking her permission.
Sonic hesitated for a moment, his hand hovering over the tray of cupcakes. He glanced up at Amy with a small, hopeful grin. “Uh, these look really good… Can I have one?”
And there they were again—those captivating green eyes that had always held her in awe, now locked onto her with an intensity she hadn’t experienced before. For the first time, Sonic’s eyes were solely focused on her, and the sight left Amy momentarily breathless. She struggled to remain composed, her excitement bubbling just beneath the surface.
“Yeah, of course! I made them for everyone.” Amy’s heart raced as she nodded eagerly, trying to keep her voice steady.
Her smile was impossible to contain, stretching from ear to ear, as she tried to navigate the swirling emotions within her. She couldn’t wait to tell Blaze about this!
Sonic picked up a cupcake, his eyes widening as he examined the colorful frosting. “You made these all by yourself?”
“Well, my parents helped a little,” Amy admitted, her cheeks turning pink. “But I did most of it!”
Sonic took a bite, his face lighting up with delight.
“Whoa, this is awesome! You’re really good at this!” He praised her, his smile widening as he took another bite. His eyes narrowed in joy, clearly savoring the taste.
“Really? I’m so glad you like it!”
It was a moment she had dreamed of—a moment where Sonic not only noticed her but seemed genuinely interested in the small gesture she had shared. The way he smiled at her, the way his eyes lit up with genuine appreciation, it was everything she had hoped for and more.
But not everything could remain perfect, and in an instant, the moment of joy was shattered by Sally Acorn’s interruption. Sally, the rich girl who was adored by everyone, swept into the little girl’s spotlight with an air of effortless grace and self-importance.
"Cupcakes, huh? How cute." Sally spoke with notable sarcasm in her voice.
“Yeah, they’re really good! You should try one, Sal.” He said cheerfully, his words slightly muffled by the cupcake he was still chewing.
"But don’t you think something a little fancier would be better, Amy? Not everyone’s into these kiddie desserts.” She leaned in, her voice dripping with mock sweetness.
Amy admired Sally’s long, brunette, lustrous hair, which seemed to flow like silk in the sunlight, but her admiration was quickly overshadowed by Sally’s condescending attitude. She knew she was a friend of Sonic, but she didn’t know why; they seemed so different.
With a single, disdainful glance, Sally made Amy feel as small and insignificant as an ant, her earlier pride and happiness crumbling into a deep, crushing humiliation. Sally looked at Amy's desserts, and laughed arrogantly.
“Well, who in their right mind would want to try that?” She said arrogantly, while going for an exaggerated hair flip.
And in a fleeting, heart-stopping moment, Sally’s careless movement sent Amy’s precious cupcakes tumbling from the tray, scattering across the grass in a chaotic mess. The cupcakes were more than just a dessert; they were an ode to the effort and love Amy and her parents had poured into creating them. The sight of them lying in ruin felt like a sharp blow, a crushing end to the pride and joy she had felt moments before.
"No!" Amy whispered, her voice trembling as she stared at the ruined treats.
"Oops, my bad." she said, shrugging casually.
What had been a radiant highlight of her day, was abruptly extinguished by Sally’s thoughtless act. As Amy looked down at the shattered remnants of her hard work, she felt the weight of her disappointment and humiliation. It wasn’t just the cupcakes that had fallen, it was the small but significant triumph of her day, the joy she had experienced, and the warm, although brief, connection she had felt with Sonic earlier. In an instant, the effort and care she had invested seemed to evaporate, leaving her with a profound sense of loss and a heartache that was far greater than the mere mess before her.
“Now, Sonic, would you be so kind to try my cookies? Mines seem more… classy!” Sally asked, with a malevolent smile on her face.
Of course, it was painfully clear that Sally's actions were driven by envy, a bitter jealousy that surged when she saw Sonic’s attention fixated on her lovingly crafted cupcakes, it was as if Sally couldn’t bear to see Amy basking in a moment of admiration and approval, especially from someone like him. She had felt her envy before, like the time she was close to catching Sonic in a race in P.E. class, only for Sally to "accidentally" bump her. She laughed it off, but Amy knew it was no accident. The realization that Sally’s envy had led to such a destructive act made her feel even more vulnerable.
For Sonic, this wasn’t right. The sight of Amy’s carefully prepared cupcakes strewn across the grass, ruined by Sally’s thoughtless action, struck him. It wasn’t just the loss of the cupcakes that disturbed him (a bit, he was hungry, after all); it was the blatant disregard for Amy’s feelings and the sheer malice behind the act, how could she do that?
Sonic, who prided himself on standing up against injustice, felt a surge of righteous anger. He couldn’t tolerate such acts, especially from someone who clearly lacked the decency to respect others. As he glanced back at Amy, he saw the profound sadness etched across her face, her spirit visibly crushed by the turn of events. He turned sharply to face the brunette girl, his brow furrowed in fierce disapproval.
“Hey! What’s your problem? Why did you do that?” He spoke with seriousness in his tone.
“Did what — exactly?” She answered him trying to act confused.
“Don’t play dumb with me Sally, you know what I’m talking about.” He didn't have time for games, he was being serious. “That’s low, very low, and it’s definitely not ok. Did you think you looked cool throwing her cupcakes to the ground?”
Sally's eyes widened in shock, she seemed indignant. How dare he challenge her so boldly? To make matters worse, he was defending the new girl, whose presence she had clearly resented. The audacity of Sonic’s confrontation and his unexpected defense of someone she had deemed unworthy left her momentarily speechless, her usual confidence shaken by the unexpected turn of events.
But the one who was stunned the most was Amy. Was this really happening? She silently thought to herself. Was Sonic truly taking her side? She had always admired him from afar, but to see him stand up for her was more than she had ever dared to imagine.
“I-It was an accident!” She nervously stuttered, surprising herself in the process.
“Yeah right, sure it was.” He rolled his eyes at her. “Apologize to her, right now.”
Sally quickly composed herself ."Why should I? It's just some dumb cupcakes".
"It’s not about the cupcakes, Sally — it’s about you being mean for no reason." He pointed back at Amy, who was still standing there, wide-eyed, clearly unsure of how or if to react. "You hurt her feelings.” he pauses, looking back at the pink haired girl, smiling. “That’s what matters.”
Sally huffed, glancing around as if hoping someone would jump to her defense, but no one did. All the other kids were watching now, their eyes on her, waiting…
She felt the weight of their stares and her face flushed.
Amy stood frozen, still trying to make sense of everything. The boy she admired had not only tasted her food and complimented her, but now he was standing up for her, defending her in front of everyone. It felt surreal, almost too much to process at once. She glanced around, instinctively searching for Blaze, her anchor in moments like this, but she was nowhere to be seen.
"Fine, sorry." she mumbled, her voice barely above a whisper.
The brunette didn’t give the shorter girl a chance to respond; she left immediately, feeling so humiliated. She’d likely seek refuge with her friends, Nicole and Bonnie, to escape the embarrassment of Sonic “turning his back” on her.
Sonic watched her leave, disappointment plastered all over his face; Sally had always been his friend, but what she did to Amy wasn’t right. His eyes drifted to the ruined cupcakes scattered on the ground, and a wave of guilt washed over him. He felt bad for Amy — she didn’t deserve any of this.
"Hey, I didn't catch your name earlier, it's Amy, right?" Sonic asked, giving her a friendly smile. "I think this is the first time we've actually talked. I’m Sonic, by the way.”
Amy nodded. Yeah, of course she knew who he was, as if she wasn’t fangirling over him since the first day she saw him in class.
"Mhm, I brought chili dogs for the picnic.” Sonic, embarrassedly, scratched the back of his neck. “Since your cupcakes can’t be enjoyed now, how about we share these instead?” He’s taken aback about how crude that last comment came out, so he, once again, turns back to Amy looking a bit nervous. “What do you think?”
He gave Amy a warm, friendly grin and she couldn’t help but smile widely again. The sadness of her ruined cupcakes seemed to melt away as she looked at him; sharing this moment with him felt like the perfect way to turn the day around. It was as if the kindness in his eyes and the warmth of his presence dissolved the sadness she had felt moments before. The small gesture of sharing this time with him, the moment they were forging, made everything else seem unimportant.
"That sounds perfect." Amy replied, smiling giddily.
And so, under the warm, golden rays of the sun, Amy and Sonic enjoyed the chili dogs together, their laughter mixing with the cheerful chatter of the picnic. Despite the earlier accident, the day had turned around; the little girl was soon surrounded by classmates who happily asked her to bring her cupcakes again another time, so they can finally taste them. With each friendly smile and request, she felt her spirits lift. What started as a disappointing moment had become a day filled with new friendships and shared joy, leaving Amy feeling genuinely happy and appreciated.
To think that the boy she had admired from afar was now someone who saw her, spoke to her, and considered her a friend—it was more than she ever imagined. Amy had spent so many days thinking it would always be just a dream, that Sonic would remain out of reach. But here he was, turning her dream into something real, something shared between them. It was a feeling she couldn’t quite put into words, but the importance of that moment weighed heavily in her heart.
That was the moment when her affection began to transform into something more — something undeniably special. It was no longer just admiration, but a growing fondness for the boy who, without knowing it, had become the hero of her small world.

And as time passed, Amy's feelings for Sonic only deepened. She was completely in love with him, and every small act of kindness filled her heart with joy beyond measure.
Sonic soon became one of her closest friends, their connection growing stronger with each passing day. They found themselves part of the same circle, sharing laughter, adventures, and moments that only strengthened their bond, it wasn’t a secret to anyone; their type of bond was something everyone noticed. The way they were always by each other’s side, supporting and encouraging one another, made it clear that their connection was special.
Sonic, continued to look out for Amy in his own way. While he cared for everyone in his life, with her, it felt different. There was a tenderness in the way he treated her, a quiet awareness of her gentleness that made him more attentive; more present.
He knew she could take care of herself. Amy was strong and capable in her own right, but still, he watched over her with a unique kind of care, it was as if he felt responsible for her happiness, for her well-being, even when she didn’t ask for it.
Amy and Sonic continued to orbit each other. Just as the stars move in silent harmony, they circled closer with each shared moment, every look, every word, unaware of how inevitable and stronger their bond had become. Sonic, in his own way, was part of that orbit too—maybe not aware of the depth of Amy's feelings, but always gravitating back towards her. Now that they have grown, feelings haven’t faded, but the fear that confessing those hidden sentiments for years might cause them problems.
Nothing will ever be the same.
