Thrown Into The Wild

Summary:

A boy wakes up in a cave, discombobulated and with a killer case of amnesia. Something besides this, however, is eating at him. Something obvious yet hidden.

Chapter 1: Wake Up Call (in the most literal sense)

Chapter Text

The first thing they saw was the text. They weren't aware of anything else, and it felt like their mind was wrapped in a warm blanket, making everything somehow hazy even though there was just darkness. There were three parts to the message.

Nintendo Presents

They had absolutely no clue what that meant. Who or what was Nintendo? What were they presenting? Why couldn't they think straight?

The Legend of Zelda

The legend of... what? What was happening? Her thoughts were interrupted by an impossibly bright light; so bright that it took up her entire attention span so that she was only barely registering the last part:

Breath of the Wild

As soon as the text disappeared, all they could focus on was the golden light. There was only a sliver, but it was so wonderful to see it and they didn't even know why they liked it so much. They could swear that among the beautiful golds and yellows there was pur

A small, faint noise rang out amongst the darkness and the sliver of gold, gradually turning into a voice:

"Open your eyes."

Suddenly, his entire vision was engulfed by the gold as his eyes obeyed, slowly but still managing to banish the ink from his eyesight.

"Wake up, Link."

His vision cleared and he sat up, taking in his surroundings. The room seemed quite advanced, though how advanced compared to the rest of... wherever he was, he couldn't be sure. He had been in a pool of water that seemed to be specifically shaped for a person. A path stretched from there to what seemed like a closed door. Many questions echoed through his head, but they were quickly drowned out by the most concerning one of the lot:

Who am I?

The question obviously concerned him; he should know who he is. Did someone do this to him? Where was he? Why can't he remember anything? He felt himself begin to panic slightly and forced himself to calm down. Surely answers would come soon. He surveyed the room again; nothing of note that could really help him- A pedestal sat at the far end of the room near the odd door. It seemed pretty important and too out of place to miss. Cautiously stepping closer, his approach set off something in the pedestal, presenting him with what looked like a tablet. The voice (which he could now tell was that of a young woman) spoke once again.

"That is a Sheikah Slate. Take it. It will help guide you after your long slumber."

'Long slumber'? So he had been sleeping in the water, that made sense. But for how long?? He reached out to the slate (she had called it a Sheikah slate?) and took it. He stared for a moment before it... activated(??), sporting the logo of an eye. For some reason, he felt like he knew what it symbolized. It was a comforting logo, and yet... something was off about it. He put that thought aside and continued further, noting the absence of the Sheikah slate from the pedestal had activated the door.

He found two chests with a threadbare pair of pants and an old shirt and (realizing he had nothing on but underwear) quickly put them on, then continued to a second pedestal in front of a larger door. .

"Hold the Sheikah Slate up to the pedestal. That will show you the way."

Showing him the way... could this be a way outside? Cautiously obeying the voice, he held the shining part of the tablet to the matching eye on the pedestal, triggering the door and letting it slowly open. Light filtered in, impossibly bright and extremely similar to the light he had seen when he was waking up. It appeared he was correct: he had finally made his way out. As he approached the opening, he heard the voice again.

"Link... you are the light... our light... that must shine upon Hyrule once again. Now, go..."

The light faded as soon as the voice was quiet, showing trees outside a hole in a stony wall. She had called him Link twice... that must be his name! It felt very familiar... as did the rest of the message, actually. Not only the mention of a Hyrule, but the entire message... the sense of deja vu was growing stronger. Once again, he pushed it all to the back of his mind. His name was Link. He could focus on that and the exit for right now.

He left the cave and greeted the outside world with gratitude, completely forgetting any text that may have appeared before his awakening or any suspicious symbolism in the cave.
