Her eyes opened slowly. She tried to not look directly at the piercing light above her.
"Where I am I?" Amy was lying on a stretcher; her tiredness was limiting her movement. 'I hope I'm not trapped in Eggman's lair again,' she thought optimistically.
"Hey, Ames"
She turned her neck to the side, following the sound and saw her team's leader sitting by her bedside.
"Sonic?"
She tried to sit up, but again the strain in her abdomen was too much for her body. Amy glanced downwards to see that she had bandages and plasters covered all over body and face.
"Hey, don't push yourself," he said while standing up to help her to rest upright on her pillow.
"Did you rest well?" He asked as he fluffed her pillow so much to the point of Amy's irritation, causing her to ask him to stop.
"Sorry," the blue hedgehog apologized.
"What happened?" Amy wondered how long she had been asleep for or whether she was still dreaming.
"Well... you got blindsided by some Beebot and the blast hit you pretty hard so I took you to Doc's for immediate care," he seemed to explain with a hint of smugness.
"That's weird I don't remember being hit that hard-"
Sonic interrupted her thoughts. "Yeah, but I think Egghead's finally building some half way decent machines now. Knocked ya' out cold."
Amy looked strangely at him, his quickened speech made her not fully believe his story, but went along with it anyway, too tired to argue. She sighed.
"I need a drink. I'm so-"
"Thirsty!" Sonic interrupted her again. Standing up so suddenly that the movement almost startled her.
"I'll go to your house and get a bottle of spring water you like. Back in a flash." He gave her his trademark smirk and wink before dashing off, leaving a slight chill.
Amy, now alone, took the time to reflect on past events.
"Oh look she's finally awake."
Or so she thought. Doctor Ginger came out in her usually cheery attitude. It seemed that the old nurse was always taking care of their team's injuries.
"Sorry, I had to get back to my other patients. I mean when Sonic brought you in here all scuffed up he begged me to put you in the infirmary."
"Begged?" She repeated, surprised. If she knew anything about Sonic then it was that he doesn't beg. Unless it for one her famous chocolate chip cookies of course.
"But I thought I had worse injuries because of all the bandages I'm wearing."
The health professional scoffed. "Oh please, you barely had a boo boo. And the way he carried you into the ward, bridal style as if he was Prince Charming, oh it reminded me of my younger years. I wish my crush..."
Amy tuned out Doc's babbling out of her mind. 'Why would he lie to me out my condition? Sonic would never leave the battlefield for no reason.'
"When I told him you probably wouldn't be waking up for a while I swear I heard him wonder whether he should kiss you to wake you up." Doc began to laugh hysterically at the thought whilst that made Amy blush violently.
"Hey, don't be too embarrassed sweetie, it just goes to how love can make one act so gallantly."
"Hold on! We're not-"
At the stop of a dime, Sonic sped back to the clinic, again interrupting Amy for the third time.
"Sorry I took so long," he joked. "But I got your favourite smoothie as well since I happened to stop by Meh Burger to on the way back." He promptly brought out the chili dog bought along with the drink and began to chomp down his lunch.
Amy looked at the smoothie and back at him to give him a wholesome smile. "Thank you," she said earnestly.
"I guess I'll leave you two kids alone." She walked out Amy's room before giving her a knowing look which made Amy wince. Sonic oblivious to the girls' conversation, continued to eat his chili dog, taking his time to lick the chili that dropped on his gloves. If Amy wasn't so tired she would have commented on his sloppy eating habits. Sonic caught her staring at him.
Sonic put on his teasing smile, "Wanna' bite?" She swore he purposely spoke with his mouth full to annoy her, which he succeed in.
"No way, you still eat like pig." She wasn't that tired to scold him.
Sonic shrugged arrogantly, "Whatever," he said, but still slowed down his eating and wiped his mouth.
"I want to rest outside." She demanded suddenly.
"Then I'll get a wheelch-"
"That won't be necessary," she finally managed to interrupt him for the first time today. "There's no need to waste medical equipment on a patient that already has her own means of transportation."
Sonic was confused until Amy's stare made him realize that she was talking about him. He sighed. "Fine."
The leader proceeded to move the blankets covering Amy, then practically scooped her up in his arms and began to walk her out of the room. "You're just lucky that you're heavy enough to classify as a weight. I could use the training." His comment earned him light slap, but it was laughed off by the pair, whose laughs and jokes could be heard throughout the clinic.
Amy may not have been truly 'immobile' or hurt by Eggman's robots, but she could at least exploit Sonic protective nature for just a few hours.
