A Lifetime of Happiness

Summary:

In which Becky took the deal she was offered.

Notes:

Written for Whumptober day 17: "We had a good run."

Work Text:

25 years is a long time, even in terms of a human life. Two and a half decades is enough time to pay off a house, get a kid through college, and have what many would call a successful marriage.

Of course, if anyone knew how that marriage was held together, they’d call it the exact opposite.

Bekcy loved Sam Winchester. She really did. He was amazing. He was strong and kind and compassionate and deadly and humble and just- Perfect. He was the single most perfect man in the universe.

When she was given the chance to have a lifetime with him, how was she supposed to say no?

She knew it was wrong. She knew Sam would never really want her. She knew Dean would never approve. She knew she would go to Hell, in the end.

But it was a good deal. Becky could be happy for once, and Sam wouldn’t really know the difference, not until it was over.

It was wrong, and selfish, and went against everything Sam stood for. But he was a strong man; he could take it. Dean would be there for him, when he called.

(Becky had worked that into the deal. It only seemed fair that Sam would still have his brother after everything. So it would all be okay.)

That’s what she told herself at the time. That was what she still believed now, 25 years later.

Another part of the deal was that she would die a “natural” death. A year ago, she’d been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Sam, sweet, perfect husband that he was, insisted she get treatment. Becky let him, knowing it wouldn’t make a difference either way. The cancer would win, she would die, and he would wake up.

But it was worth it, she thought, to have him doting on her and hounding their sons about coming up for “one last visit”. They had two children together, both working hard in their respective fields of engineering and law. They didn’t come home often but they sent the nicest gifts, including the personalized weighted blanket Becky had with her at the hospital.

They were good boys. She hoped Sam would still love them when he realized what had happened.

“Are you sure you’re comfortable?” Sam asked, gently holding her hand. “I can get one of the nurses to give you more pain medicine if you need it.”

“I’m fine, Sam,” she replied weakly. “I’m just dying. Not much they can do about that.”

Sam smiled sadly, tears pooling in his beautiful eyes. “Don’t say that, love. I don’t want to think about that.”

“I know,” she whispered. “But don’t be too sad. We had a good run, didn’t we?”

He nodded slowly. “Yeah, we did. I love you, so much.”

“I know.” Becky touched his cheek with a shaky hand. “Promise me something?”

“Anything.”

“When I die…. Call your brother.”

Sam’s eyes cast downward but he nodded. “I don’t want to hear what he has to say,” he protested weakly. “He never respected you, or our relationship.”

“I know,” she said. “But you’ll need someone to support you, and you know how busy our boys are….”

Sam sighed. “Yeah…. It has been a long time, hasn’t it?”

She nodded with a small smile. “It has.”

Let this be my one good deed before I go.

Two weeks later, Becky would pass peacefully in her sleep, with her loving and devoted husband at her side.

Two days after that, Sam would cut off all communication with their sons and their friends, disappearing without a trace. Reunited with his brother after a long quarter-century, Sam threw himself back into hunting. Whether it was a coping mechanism for his trauma or a way to make up for lost time, only Dean could say, and he wasn’t talking to anyone but his brother.

Becky, deep in the pits of Hell, was unaware of this. But, as she was strapped to the rack, she couldn’t find room in her soul for regret.

It had been a good run, in the end. Besides, if she did turn into a demon, Sam had a weakness for those. Maybe that wouldn’t be so bad….
