Hawks loved having Dabi stay overnight at his place, don't get him wrong. The sleepy cuddles, having a personal human heater, he even enjoyed smacking Dabi with his wings every time the bastard tried to steal the covers.
But if Hawks were being honest, there was a price to pay for this weirdly domestic relationship they had fallen into. And that price? The race to the bathroom every damn morning.
Hawks wanted to make it clear that he didn't pick this apartment. Like hell would he ever get a place with only one tiny bathroom. No, the hero commission had insisted on it when they were assigning him a "safe house." Apparently, "safe" also meant "inconveniently designed." And inconvenient was putting it mildly when it came to mornings with Dabi.
Sunlight filtered softly through the blinds, stirring Hawks from his sleep. He blinked awake, his gaze landing on Dabi, who was just beginning to rouse. For a brief moment, their eyes met.
"Don't you dare."
Dabi's lip curled into a smirk as he flung himself out of bed, landing with all the grace of a drunk chicken. Hawks shot up too, but in his rush, his foot got tangled in the blanket. A split second later, he found himself sprawled face-first on the floor with a muffled groan.
Dabi, already halfway to the bathroom, barely spared him a glance. Instead, he let out a dark, evil laugh that made the hair on the back of Hawks' neck stand up.
"I swear to god, Dabi," Hawks grumbled, scrambling to untangle himself from the sheets. He sent a flurry of feathers after the villain, one of them wrapping around Dabi's ankle yanking him back.
"What the-" Dabi grunted, landing on his ass with a thud. "Get your stupid fucking feathers off me." he practically growled.
"Not a chance," Hawks shot back with a grin, finally freeing himself from the blanket and leaping to his feet.
Dabi's eyes narrowed dangerously. Without warning, he ignited the feather still wrapped around his leg, flames licking the edges and quickly reducing it to ash. Hawks' eyes widened. His wings twitched in panic.
"Dabi lets calm down ya?" Hawks said, hands raised in mock surrender, though his feet were already inching closer to the door.
Dabi didn't respond. He merely crushed the last feather in his hand with a snap, the ash spilling off of his palm. Hawks took another step forward, glancing at the door, only a few agonizing steps away. Without wasting another second, he made a break for it, his hands slamming down on the handle.
Just as the door creaked open, he saw it in the corner of his eye: Dabi charging straight for him.
Now, Hawks had seen a lot of terrifying things in his career as a pro hero-villains with destructive quirks, catastrophic disasters, heart-stopping rescues-but nothing, nothing, had ever come close to the sight of Dabi sprinting full speed right at him.
Hawks opened his mouth to say something, what, he wasn't sure. Scream? Beg for mercy? But before he could get a word out, Dabi collided into him, sending them both stumbling into the bathroom.
The impact was so sudden and forceful that it took all of Hawks' strength to keep his footing. He had no choice but to release the door handle to avoid bringing the whole door down, allowing Dabi to step fully inside and slam it shut behind him.
"You absolute maniac," Hawks groaned, clutching his ribs where Dabi had barreled into him.
Dabi, grinning awfully wide, didn't bother to respond. Instead, he grabbed his toothbrush, which somehow had made itself at home in Hawks' bathroom months ago.
The hero couldn't help but stare. What had his life become?
Dabi, meanwhile, leaned casually against the sink, toothbrush in hand, a self-satisfied smirk pulling at his lips. "Move your fucking wing," he said, swatting at the appendage that had apparently invaded his space.
"Oh I'm sorry that my anatomy is an inconvenience to you," Hawks deadpanned, grabbing his own toothbrush.
"I guess I can forgive you this once," Dabi replied with a fake, over dramatic sigh.
Hawks rolled his eyes, roughly grabbing the toothpaste out of Dabi's hand. "Remind me why I let you stay here?"
The dorky smile that crossed Dabi's face had the hero's heart clenching. "Because you loveee me" he dragged the word on his tongue just to be annoying, but even Hawks couldn't deny it was kinda cute.
Hawks sighed, fighting down a smile. "Mhm, I suppose that's true."
They brushed their teeth in companionable silence after that, Hawks occasionally elbowing Dabi in the ribs when he got too close, and Dabi retaliating by flicking toothpaste foam at Hawks. By the time they were finished, the bathroom mirror was splattered with tiny white specks, and Hawks was genuinely considering locking Dabi out the next morning.
When they finally wandered back to bed, Dabi immediately stole Hawks' spot, burrowing under the covers with a satisfied groan. Hawks stood at the edge of the bed, hands on his hips, glaring down at the mess of black hair and blankets. "Move."
"Nope," came Dabi's muffled reply, his voice smug.
Hawks sighed dramatically, flopping onto the bed and yanking at the covers. Dabi held on with an iron grip, twisting himself into the fabric. Hawks tried to shove him, but the villain only wriggled deeper into the blankets, laughing under his breath.
"Oh, come on," Hawks whined, resorting to using his wings to bat at Dabi's head. "At least give me a corner."
"You snooze, you lose," Dabi shot back, peeking out just enough to smirk up at Hawks. His eyes sparkled with mischief, and despite himself, Hawks couldn't help but grin.
With a resigned sigh, Hawks finally slid under the remaining edge of the blanket, pressing close to Dabi for warmth. The villain huffed but didn't complain, letting Hawks settle against him. After a moment, Dabi shifted, draping an arm over Hawks' waist and pulling him closer.
"You're insufferable," Hawks muttered, though his voice lacked any real bite.
"And yet, here you are," Dabi replied, his tone soft.
