Chapter 1: Prologue: It was always meant to happen

Chapter Text

Scar blinks his eyes open, just waking up.

The last time he had been awake, he had been a zombie, commanded by who at the end of the day he would be against, in the games of course.

When his eyes eventually adjusted to the light, he flinched back in shock.

He knew where he was.

This… this was Secret life.

Why am I here again? Is this what all the other winners had to go through?

Probably not, Grian would've warned him about this, right?

But then, he thought of something.

Wait a minute…

He didn't succeed in his end of the deal after the last game.

Was this his punishment now?

I guess so…

What was he supposed to do now?

He sat down, waiting for something, anything, to happen.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Jimmy knew it would happen the moment he heard the voice of his rival.
He knew it when he heard that lever being flipped.
He knew it when he heard Lizzie's beeps of distress.
It was always meant to happen, right?
He dreaded watching the rest of the games play on without him.
He could've been the one there, representing his team if Grian hadn't ruined everything.
But like he said, it was always meant to happen, right?
No matter what he had.
No matter what he did.
His fate was always locked.
And he didn't have that precious golden key.
But the game's the game.
Grian did what he needed to do and Jimmy should just accept that.
He needs to.
Whatever rage or liking you have to someone fades by the next game so why dwell on what happened?
It wouldn't matter anyway.
But still, he felt an indescribable anger, fiercer than anything before.
He had a chance but yet, Grian had the nerve to snatch it away from him.
Grian knew how much he wanted that win.
He sighed frustratedly.
It's not like there's anything he could do now.
But wait.
He knew who was in control.
Plus, he had already prayed to them earlier and that worked out well for him so why can't he just do it again?
He felt a pang of regret.
What would the listeners do to him?
They're definitely not gonna be so keen on his new idea, especially after what he did previously.
But he couldn't just live like this.
He needed that extra edge.
But yet, he also had someone else, someone he knew better who could hate him if he did this.
He liked Martyn and didn't want to betray him.
Suddenly, he started to get lightheaded.
Was the game over and he just didn't notice?
He sighed. Probably.
And that's when he felt consciously snap away from him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Scar felt a gust of cold wind brush over him.

He looked up, seeing traces of some snow falling.

He grinned. Fixing his roof finally paid off.

He walked into his house, wanting to make himself a nice hot chocolate.

He gulped in fear.

Shadows started to engulf him like he was visiting the secret keeper, only worse.

He saw bits of purple mixed in.

Soon, they began to form something.

As they started to do so, he started to notice what they were becoming.

He saw the shape of Grian.

He felt a prickle of sadness and fear. “Shadows, where are my friends?”
