Work Text:
It had been a few months since Ratio and Aventurine actually started dating each other.
It once started with a mutual agreement to just play pretend to be lovers, and be a normal, married couple living together in a nice apartment, while adopting three unusual yet intriguing cats (on the courtesy of Ratio’s (spy) colleague, Ruan Mei). This is in order for both Ratio and Aventurine to finish their own hidden missions, which unbeknownst to the both of them.
Agent Ratio, the calculating spy from the Intelligentsia Guild, was sent with a long term mission, to investigate a disreputable company, the IPC, which is notorious for illicit dealings behind the successful organization. Now playing as a therapist in a local hospital and married to Aventurine.
Assassin Aventurine, from the Stonehearts crew which is under the command of the IPC, to protect the company’s name and assassinate whoever is assigned to be killed. He is on a duty to scan a particular spy around this area and he needs to create an unsuspecting identity of himself. Now playing as a housewife and work as a part-time accountant.
As time goes by, shared experiences and being together for a long period of time, they realized they had feelings with each other. Maybe being a real couple won’t hurt — kill two birds with one stone.
Now Ratio has been away from town, on a mission to investigate a mysterious organization. It had been two months since he and Aventurine seen each other, only communicating through occasional calls, even that alone can be counted by hands.
One time, in the middle of one of their nightly chatter, Ratio informed Aventurine he will be back on Christmas day. So Aventurine decided to make plans, thought of having dinner together and sharing a gift in their apartment, once Ratio go back to town.
Ratio agreed with no hesitation.
They had around one month before Christmas. Of course Ratio was preoccupied with his current mission, so he has less time to look for gifts.
How lucky though (blessed by Gaithra I suppose), Ratio managed to complete the mission early. With this, he was going to make use of this precious time to hypothesize things that Aventurine might like — based on his observations whenever he is at home with Aventurine.
Unfortunately though, they had known for each other for just a year, and half of the time spent on doing missions. Naturally both Ratio and Aventurine has limited clues on what they actually enjoy and what their likes and dislikes.

It was the day.
Though today was Christmas day, Aventurine somehow still has to assassinate someone, so he was employed for this supposed-to-be-festive day.
Unlike Ratio's schedule, he has been less busier the past few months, so he has some time to do surf the internet for gifts. He even has the time to decorate the room. Sure he can now walk into the house with blood splatters everywhere on his body and there will be no what he assumes screamings of horror from his spouse, yet he missed Ratio’s presence in their shared home. His comforting company, his grounding voice, his touch- ah, the phone vibrated.
Merry Christmas, Aventurine. I’ve just arrived in town a few hours ago, i will be home soon at 6pm tonight. Can’t wait to see you.
Is what’s written from Ratio in Aventurine’s phone. Aventurine smiled, he has come prepared. Now at home, he has ordered a few appetizers and main courses. All he has to do now is just to wait for his dear husband.
Aventurine looked at the clock on the living room — it was 5.30.
guess Ratio is coming soon...
An hour had passed after the time Ratio was supposed to appear, but there was still no sign that tells Aventurine that someone was coming. He was feeling a bit hungry, so he snacked on some chips. In the room, all seems and feels fun — fully decorated, played pop music with Robins's melodic voice and all. And yet, all Aventurine do is just waiting and sitting restlessly on the sofa, with the cat cakes.
Speaking of cat cakes, they were now yowling. Spades keeps nudging his feet, seemingly tells Aventurine that it is missing Ratio too. Club was just zoning out, but something tells him that he is not looking too good right now.
While Hearts was also zoning out… it’s a little hungry it is. Aventurine deduced.
At least this one is solvable.
A bell rang.
Aventurine rushed to the door swiftly.
“You’re late by an hour,” Aventurine said while opening the door, “it’s rare for you to be not on time, what could possibly happen-“

After their hearty meal together and exchanging gifts together, They cleared the table and the leftovers, and washed the dishes together. Even wearing matching sweaters that they had just opened.
“I was actually free for the past three days, my work has finished earlier. I used these days to look for gifts and stayed at a hotel. Yet I’m still wondering if these gifts are to you likings,” Ratio explained.
Aventurine has similar thoughts about whether this is to Ratio’s preference, this whole gift exchanging thing. He wasn't sure in the first place. What if Ratio didn't like surprises? What if he preferred if he asked him what he likes rather than just blindly guessing?
But it went well, judging by his response. What he didn't expect is Ratio spoiling him with a lot of gifts. Guess this is a new found fact about his spouse, he can get ridiculously bountiful.
When the ambience has simmered down and heard one of them yawning, it’s a sign to get some rest for another day. Ratio and aventurine might have their schedules clashed, even their main goals go on different ways, but at least for today they got to spend akin to a real lovers, talked just like normal couples, regardless of their backgrounds.
