Chapter 1: A new Land
Chapter Text
Sunday walked towards the Party car, having gotten a text about a system hour ago from Himeko stating she would like to talk to everyone about making a detour.
Frankly he was a little surprised she had invited him to join them on this, considering it hasn’t really been a month yet since he boarded. Not to mention he wasn’t really a part of the trailblazers, and felt a bit out of place here. Nevertheless it would’ve also been rude to just ignore Himeko’s invite as well.
So within that hour he made his— the guest bed, got into proper clothing, making sure nothing was out of place while doing so, and thus landed himself here.
A part of him was still unsure he should be doing this, he didn’t want to overstepped his boundaries on the express. Welt had reassured him multiple times that he could do as he pleased here and that he wasn’t being a burden, but it was still hard for him to fully believe that.
Sunday took a deep breath, pushing away all the doubts and worries to the side for now, before sliding the door open.
Inside the Party car the crew sat in one of the few booths that resided in the car, the lot talking amongst themselves having yet to realize Sunday's appearance.
March 7th was the first to spot him, her face beaming as she waved over, “Over here sunday! I saved ya a spot!” she chimed pointing to a spot next to her.
A small smile formed, nodding as he made his way over securing the spot next to march, “So what's this about a detour? I presumed you all were going to head to Amphoreus after departing Penacony?”
Himeko hummed, setting her cup of coffee down on the table, “We still plan on going to Amphoreus, however with the uncertainty of what it's like or what we’ll face there I would like to be prepared for anything.” She started folding her hands in her lap, “So I would like to make one stop before we go,” Himeko paused for a moment, her honeyed eyes glancing at everyone, “It’s better to be prepared than under prepared.”
Everyone around the table sat in silence for a beat or two taking in the information, Sunday especially. It would be his first time going to a different planet - if he was allowed to go - in what was probably over a decade. With being the Oak Family Head Sunday was to remain in Penacony to continue with his workloads, listening to people confessionals, and continuing on with his goal of the endless dream.
But that was over, and now there was a chance he would be able to experience another planet's lifeforms, cultures, food, and so much more…he wouldn’t like it made him both excited but equally nervous.
“Where did you have in mind?” Dan Heng piped up, breaking the silence.
“Minda 21, it's a very well known planet to get supplies from. We’ve been there a couple times before whenever we needed supplements for a few different things.” She informed, taking a sip of her coffee.
“We have?” Caelus perked up
“Oh that place!” March gasped, the memories flowing back, “It was before you joined us, we went there to get some sort of mechanism thingy pom-pom needed, and it was only located on that planet!”
Caelus glanced over to Sunday, a mischievous grin forming on his face, “Guess we’ll both be going into this blind Sunny!”
Sunday scoffed, rolling his eyes, “I’ve already told you plenty of times to stop calling me that.” He sighed, crossing his arms over his chest - earning giggles from both March and Caleus.
Welt and Himeko smiled at the small interaction before continuing on.
“Make sure to wear something warm as well, around this time Minda 21 is in its colder seasons,” Welt glanced over to Sunday, “Sunday I can lend you one of my coats if you decide to join us.”
The wings behind Sunday's ears twitched a little, his eyes widening at welts words, more so at that he was allowed to come with them if he wants to, “Are you sure Mr. Yang? I wouldn’t want to ruin your clothing.” he said, fidgeting with one of the rings on his fingers.
Welt waved his hand reassuring Sunday's worries, “It’s fine, and even if it were to get ruined I have plenty more so there's no need to worry.”
“I can also lend you one of my scarves too! I have this nice cozy blue one that would suit you perfectly!” March clapped her hands together, smiling over to Sunday.
It was true he didn’t bring a lot of clothing with him, the most he had was the clothes he was currently wearing, a pajama set, and also some casual wear. He really didn’t have the time to pack anything else considering being a fugitive doesn't give you that time. But hearing how willing these people would offer up clothing to make sure he didn’t freeze made a warmth envelope in his chest.
Most days he still doesn’t think he deserves their kindness, after everything he did, nearly killing them, and trapping so many people in an endless dream…It still baffles him. Yet they were still giving him another chance, and treating him with such a kindness he hasn't received in a very long time.
“So when we dropping?” Caelus asked, looking over to Himeko.
Himeko laughed softly, still not quite understanding a lot of Caelus’s references, “In about 3 system hours, that way everyone can get ready and I can also make a list of things we will need.” She replied, taking another sip of her coffee, “Does that work for everyone?”
The rest of the group nodded in agreement, with that they all collectively got up from the booth heading their separate ways to get ready.
“Follow me Sunday, you can pick out which coat you want to use for our trip.” Welt said, smiling warmly down at Sunday.
“Right, thank you again for letting me borrow one of them, I’ll try and repay you back in some way.” Sunday thanked as the two of them started making their way down to the cabin car over to welt’s room.
A sigh left the older man's mouth, “There's no need for that, I just want to make sure you don’t catch a cold or anything while we're down there. Maybe while we're also there we can do some shopping for you to get new clothes.” Welt pondered stepping inside his room, Sunday following close behind as he made way to the closet.
Once more that warmth from earlier blossomed in Sunday's chest, there was a familiar tone to how welt said it - almost like what he imagined a real father was. A part of Sunday was always curious if Welt had been a father before, seeing as how he treated the other and also Sunday.
But he wouldn’t dare to bring it up.
“If it’s not too much trouble then I would much appreciate it.” Sunday replied with a small smile, a small question popped up in Sundays head, “Do you think there might be snow there?”
Welt hummed as started pulling out different variety of coats, “There’s a good chance, I’ve heard that when it’s the winter time at Minda 21 it usually snows a decent amount. I think at least once that season they also get a blizzard.” Welt informed, starting laying out the coats on his bed, “why you ask?”
Sunday glance out at the variety of coats, all ranging from either a warm grey to a dark brown. His lips curled a bit more upwards seeing how Welts clothing choices never changed in colors.
Eventually he set out with the lighter gray great coat folding it over his arm, “If memory serves me right, then I think this’ll be the first time I ever witness snow.” He confessed glancing over to the older man who looked flabbergasted by the news.
“Really? Not even your home before Penacony had snow?” Welt asked curiously, it wasn’t uncommon for planets to never see snow or like Jarilo-VI snow was the only thing they saw.
Nodding Sunday tried to look back at his childhood, before gopher wood had adopted him and robin, before his mother had passed, before the stellaron disaster ever happened…he had very little memories of that to begin with considering how young he was when everything took place. But never once did he think he saw snow.
“I can’t recall a time considering…considering I was very young when the stellaron disaster happened.” He said quietly, noticing Welt's shoulders stiffen slightly, “But either or I’m excited to see it never less, and also seeing a whole new planet in general.”
The room was silent for a second, before welt gently laid his hand against Sunday's shoulder, “It’s a big step to your new journey, while there is a lot of excitement to it, it can also be nerve wracking. So if you need any assistance at all while We're down there don’t hesitate to ask ok?” Welt said gently and sincerely, his gaze softening even more, speaking nothing but the truth in his words.
Sunday flinched, it felt like welt could see right through him because while again he was excited for this new experience he couldn’t lie and say he wasn’t incredibly anxious about this. There were a lot of new things he was learning with being aboard the express, something he was only starting to adjust to.
He gave a curt nod, “ok.”
With that Sunday exited out of welts room, March 7th almost immediately dragging him to her room now to try on the different scarves. Even though earlier she had just mentioned the one, this seemed to be a common theme with them.
It wouldn’t be the first time March has used Sunday as a model to try out different accessories at outfits, the casual clothes he had did come from her after all. However he didn’t mind it, however he didn't mind it, to be honest he found some comfort in this.
While he never admits it out loud, March reminded him a lot like robin. When they were younger robin would always dress him up, whether that was with accessories, nail polish, or whatever else the two of them always held a bright smile while doing it. When March first did his hair in different styles tears swelled up in his eyes from the painful familiarity.
But now he was more than happy to do it.
“See what I told you! The dark blue one suits you perfectly!” Marched exclaimed, stepping back, posing her pointer fingers and thumbs in a square like angle like she was taking a photo.
A small flushed escapes Sundays cheeks as he adjusted the scarf a little, “Miss March—“
“Stop calling me miss, it makes me feel old!”
“Ahem, March, I don’t mean to be rude but we should hurry. Thank you for the scarf nevertheless.” Sunday glanced over to the clock that resided on her nightstand, it was nearly time to go.
“Oh crap is it really that time!” She shouted quickly running to her closest throwing out a bunch of different winter clothing she had, “ughh what to wear!!”
A soft chuckle left Sunday at the scene, although he slightly cringed from seeing the mess she was creating of the clothing, “I’ll leave you to it then. See you in the parlor car.” He lastly said exiting out of the chaotic room.
“Ok! Cya!” March called out, half muffled behind the closet door.
A sigh left his lips as he walked down the corridor, his grip tightening around the great coat. This surely was going to be an interesting trip.
It would also be his first trip with the crew he had just realized as well. Something about that made something turn in his stomach, unsure if it was a negative thing or positive.
———
Time passed quicker than expected, and only Caelus being late by a couple minutes did they all gather once more in the parlor car.
Pom-Pom was also here, “Now remember to be back before dinner! Pom-Pom has planned a special dinner and will be very upset if you all are late!” They huffed, crossing their arms, “but other than that, stay safe!”
Himeko chuckled and nodded, “I’ll make sure we’ll all be back before then conductor, don’t worry. See you soon!” She waved and gestured to the rest of the crew to follow suit.
As they all disembark onto Minda 21, Sunday eyes widen from the sight before him. The streets were bustling with people, either trading or buying a different form of items, the landscape of different sorts of buildings scattered the land a completely different vibe compared to Penacony.
But what made his eyes really sparkle was the fresh snow that laid on the streets and buildings, covering the whole place.
“Looks like your wish came true.” Welt said, looking down at Sunday with an amused expression.
The halovians face went instantly red as he cleared his throat, adjusting his scarf again, “looks that way…” he said softly the small curve of his lips not quite leaving his face yet.
Behind them Himeko clapped her hands, gaining the attention of everyone, “alright everyone listen up!” She firstly said, “to make this trip quicker We're going to divide in teams of two, me and welt will cover the majority of the list while the four of you handle the rest!” Himeko smiled, handing a note to Dan Heng with the second half of the items.
Dan Heng quirked an eyebrow seeing how short their list was, “Himeko, are you sure you don’t want us to get some of the things on your list?” He asked curiously glancing up at the red hair and brown hair figures.
Himeko nudge welt with her elbow, the older male clearing his throat, “well we thought this might be a good time for you lot to enjoy yourselves too. Me and himeko came to the conclusion that you four needed a small break after everything we’ve been through so when your done collecting those items,” he paused looking at all the youngsters in from of them, all their faces seeming to perk up from his words, “you all can do some light shopping, March I’m looking at you specifically.”
“Hey! Don’t call me out like that Mr. Yang! I can do light shopping no problem!” She huffed, a puff of fog leaving her mouth, as march crossed her arms over her chest.
Caelus snickered at that, “you said the same thing in Penacony or do I have to pull out the receipts again?” He poked her puffy pink jacked, teasing lightly causing the girl's face to turn a bright red.
“That was the only time! Forgive a girl from having a hobby other than dealing with stellarons!” She shouted, swatting away Caelus hand, “but fine I won’t spend…too much.”
A round of laughter escaped the group, even Dan Heng had a warm smile at the exchange.
“Alright you two, ease up.” Welt chuckled, “stick together and if you need anything—“
“Contact you or Himeko if something were to happen.” They all said in unison.
Welt blinked, then blinked again, before clearing his throat, “yes that.” He grunted shifting his weight on his cane, “anyway, meet back here in three hours alright?”
“Ok!” Caelus and march chimed while Dan Heng and Sunday nodded.
Before the group's departure Himeko stopped Sunday, gently grabbing the cuff of his coat, “Now Sunday I understand this is all new for you, if you feel uncomfortable at all, just text me or welt and we’ll take you back to the express ok? Don’t push yourself too much.” She said softly, fully understanding how overwhelming this all can be sometimes.
Sunday paused, opening his mouth before closing, unsure of what to say at first, not really expecting her to say that…after a second he needed, “I don’t think it will come to that, but if it should I will let you know. Thank you Miss Himeko.” He said gently, the wings on his head flapping softly.
“You can just call me Himeko dear.” She smiled warmly before joining back up with welt to carry on their duties.
Sunday watched them go, clutching at his scarf March lent to him. Once again not understanding how he deserved their kindness, just that interaction alone made his eyes sting but he didn’t shed any tears.
“C’mon Sunday we don’t want you getting lost now!” Caleus called to him waving him over.
His golden eyes landed on the small group, his group. Nodding before making his way over, his feet crunching in the snow below him with each step, “coming!”

Chapter Text
One by one, group youngsters were able to cross out most of the items that were on their list, making their way over to a little store for the last remaining thing they needed.
“We're almost done and y’know what that means? Personal shopping time!” March exclaimed, skipping over to the store, “I’ve already spotted a couple things I already wanna get!”
“Of course you did.” Dan Heng and Caelus said in unison, both having a soft smile on their features as they walked behind March.
Sunday however was falling a little behind the group, throughout their searching every minute that passed he could feel himself getting colder and colder.
Despite the layers of clothing he was wearing it felt like it was doing little to nothing, his body already began to shiver as he rubbed his arms trying to gain some warmth in them. Sunday's nose was a bright red, sniffling almost every other second trying to keep the snot that kept threatening to leak out, his poor wings too were quivering, almost feeling they were gonna fall off at any second if he didn’t get some warmth.
How could it possibly be this cold!? Are the others as effective by this too?
Golden eyes glance up to the three in front of him, seeing how they were fairing with this bitter cold. Caelus and March 7th's faces were flush with red similar to him, although a lighter color, but other than that they seemed fine, both of them were smiling brightly, and Caelus kept trying to catch some snowflakes in his mouth as they walked.
Dan Heng on the other hand didn’t seem effective at all, maybe it was due to his Vidyadhara blood but regardless he kept walking with that stoic expression he always wore.
That same expression glancing back at Sunday every now and then to check in on him seeing as how he was falling behind.
When they approached the store Caelus and March already rushed in, wanting to get the boring part over and done with. However before Sunday stepped a foot inside Dan Heng placed a hand on his shoulder, stopping his movements.
“Are you feeling alright Sunday?” He asked, jade eyes scanning him head from toe, “You look a little pale. Do you want me to contact Himeko or Mr. Yang?”
A pang of guilt struck Sunday at that, he really didn’t want to ruin anyone’s day just because he was a little cold. He was fine , Sunday was an adult not a child.
“I-I appreciate your concern Dan Heng,” Sunday started trying to smooth his features, putting up the act that he was in fact fine, “but there’s no need for th-that, I’m not used to this type of weather yet so I’m still a-adjusting.” It wasn’t a full lie, considering Sunday never grew up in any cold climates so it was understandable when someone who hasn’t would be heavily affected by this.
Dan Heng stayed silent for a bit, while it was hard to read his expressions Sunday had a feeling Dan Heng didn’t fully believe him, “Alright,” He finally said after a moment, “if you start to feel worse let me know ok?”
Sunday nodded, “I will, let’s continue shall we?” He gestured to the store March 7th and Caelus had disappeared into. Dan Heng hummed and stepped inside, Sunday following suit and thanking the aeons above that a wave of warmth greeted the both of them as they entered.
“What do you mean you don’t have it!? The other guy we went to first said you would!” March voice echoed throughout the store, making it easy to find her located at the front desk.
“Like I told the both of ya’, someone had already bought out the rest of the stock I had for those types of batteries. Don’t be surprised either if other stores tell you the same thing.” An older gentleman sat behind the counter, looking irritated at both March and Caleus.
“C’mon pops—“
“Don’t call me that.”
“There’s gotta be someone in this town that has these batteries right?” Caelus continued waving his hand in the air, “like what about the guy you buy the batteries from! Surely they have it right?”
“What’s going on?” Dan Heng interrupted, sliding up next to March casting a curious look down at her.
March let out a dramatic groan as she rubbed her temple, “This store also doesn’t have the batteries we need, and there’s a good likelihood that none of the other stores will have it either - apparently their low on stock of them.” She whined, Dan Heng hummed in taking the information.
“If that’s the case then we can just tell Himeko—“ He was about to say before the older gentleman cut him off mid sentence.
“There might be one fella actually, although his store is a bit out of town.” The older man grunted, pulling out a map of the town pointing near the top, “it’s a total ghost town up there only a few shops remain, but considering that there’s a good chance he might still have those batteries stocked.”
“Really? Awesome! See march told you not to get all mopey just yet!” Caelus smiled ruffling her pink hair playfully.
“I’m not moping! Still, that's great someone might have it! How far away is it?” March asks swatting Caelus hand once again off her hair.
“About two hours give or take, there’s not a lot of transportation that can take you there considering it’s basically abandoned so you might have to walk.” The man said, rolling up the map and placing it back into his drawer, “just head north and you’ll stumble upon it eventually.”
Everyone had a glance at one another about that, it was already about mid afternoon with almost getting every item. If they were to go it would be cutting close to the set time they were supposed to get back to the express.
“Considering it is our last item we need, I guess we can make the trip.” Dan Heng muttered glancing over to March, “but this means we probably won’t have time to go shopping afterwards.”
At that March’s shoulders slumped her lip pouting, “aw man…” she whimpered but quickly straightened herself up again, looking triumphant now, “oh well, can’t be helped. I guess that means I’ll just do some extra shopping in Amphoreus!”
Caelus snickered, Dan Heng face palmed, and Sunday lips turned upwards, “I don’t necessarily think that’s how that works—“
“Shshshh!!” March cut off Sunday sentence, her hands flapping in the air, “that’s how it works in my logic! Anyway let’s get going, we don’t have all day to get those batteries!” She lastly put to the conversation, rushing out of the store, the trailblazer hot on her heels.
Dan Heng and Sunday were the last to leave the store, the black hair male casting a concern glance over to Sunday but not saying anything.
Heeding the store owners directions they all started heading north, heading farther and farther away from the bustling streets into the more quiet side of the city. As they walked the snowfall picked up, from once was a soft flurry to snow showers.
Sunday was, struggling to put it lightly. His body was now fully shaking with each step he took, his breathing becoming ragged, his skin pale and a bright red. Desperately he tried to gather some warmth, whether he tried to adjust his scarf tighter around himself that it was now covering or hugging himself so tightly hoping something would come out of it.
Frankly he didn’t think he could make the two hour walk, but a voice hissed in the back of his mind saying he was pathetic and weak , for not being able to handle a little cold. Trying to convince himself that he's been through worse, he could manage just one more hour of this. Besides the others weren't as bothered by this cold, they weren't complaining, and Sunday wasn't going to start that.
It was fine , he was fine .
Finally after what seemed like forever, at least in Sunday's mind, they had made it to their destination.
“That geezer was right, this area is like a ghost town.” Caelus hummed, scanning their surroundings, not seeing a single soul insight. All the buildings surrounding them too looked abandoned, not lights, sounds, or any indications that people lived in them.
“Yeah…it’s kinda giving me the creeps a little.” March shivered, sticking close to Caelus, who patted her shoulder reassuringly.
“There's no need to worry! The Galactic Baseballer is here! So if any ghost tries to bother us I just send em flying!” He puffed out his chest, his voice echoing around them.
“And how exactly are you going to hit a ghost? Last time I checked their not physical beings” Dan Hend inquired, raising an eyebrow.
“Well ummm,” Caelus choked, not prepared for that question, “I’ll have them possess something first then send em flying!” Quickly adding, motioning his arms like he was swinging a bat.
“Uh-huh.”
March giggled as she lightly elbowed Caelus' side at his silly remark, “C’mon let's find that shop then get out of here before we're the ones getting possessed!”
“Ugh no thanks, I've been possessed once too many!” Caelus shivered as memories of Heliobi taking over his body for a split second. Shaking his head from the thoughts he continued to lead the way, hoping they managed to run into the shop soon.
Thirty minutes went by, nothing.
Going from street to street in hopes to find any instances of a store to only come empty handed.
“We’re we duped or something!? We’ve been searching forever and there's no sight of this stupid store!” March groaned, scratching her head with her mitten gloves, “Did we waste all this time for nothing?!”
Sunday glanced over at the trio, despite them shouting it sounded so distant - like he was further away when in reality he was only a couple feet away. He tried to collect on what they were saying, trying to read their lips, but he couldn’t.
So cold, it was so cold.
There was an attempt to take a step forward, to try and get closer to see if he could hear them better. But his legs stood still, again he tried, nothing, again, again, again .
Why can't I move?! It's almost as if…as if
“D-D-Dan Heng…..” Sunday words slurred, barely above a whisper.
It was enough to catch Dan Heng's attention. Thankfully, after saying those soft words the black hair male turned around, those jade eyes widened with concern as he hurried over to Sunday.
“Sunday! Sunday what's wrong?” He asked frantically his hands hovering over the shaking form in front of him. Sunday looked awful, his whole body shaking from head to toe, his skin was deathly pale , with only a bright red of color spreading from his cheeks.
“I-I can’t m-m-oo–” he tried to mutter out, but in the next second his knees buckled in on themselves, arms instantly dropping to the side, as his eyes rolled to the back of his head.
The last thing Sunday register was someone screaming his name, and catching him before falling onto the cold floor. Before his world went completely dark, only one thing still remained.
Cold, it’s so cold….

Chapter Text
“Sunday! Sunday!” Dan Heng shouted, lightly slapping Sunday cheek trying to get the man to wake up, but nothing was working.
This was bad, really bad, guilt ate away at Dan Heng. He should've pushed Sunday more if he was really alright, he knew that the halovian wasn’t looking good for wear since they were at that other store.
But he didn’t, he had dropped the matter because Sunday said he was fine, and now…
“Wh-what happened to him-!?” March cried out, breaking Dan heng’s thoughts as she hurried next to his side, her hands hovering over Sunday's unconscious form unsure of what to do.
“We need to get him out of this cold, I don’t think he can handle this type of weather.” He said, shrugging off his jacket to quickly put it on Sunday, hoping it would give some extra warmth,”Caelus help me get him on my back.”
“Right!” Caelus nodded, adjusting sunday so now he was being supported against Dan heng’s back, during that Caelus had also adjusted sundays scarf so now it was covering his wings and ears. His face winced as his fingers brushed against Sunday's ear - it felt frozen to the touch.
“Where should we go?! The other towns are too far away to carry him all the way there for assistance and we're basically in the middle of nowhere!” March panicked. frantically looking around her surroundings hoping a miracle would just plop right in front of them.
“We didn’t pass by any clinics either,” Dan heng grunted, standing up on his feet - surprisingly sunday was very light despite the layer of clothings, and he wasn’t sure if he should be concerned for that aspect or slightly thankful, “Our best option is to hope maybe someone still lives in one of theses buildings, and gives us some help.”
Getting the memo Caelus and March 7th started going door to door, banging their fists against the wooden frame.
“Hello! Anyone in there we need help! Please!” march shouted from the outside, waiting for a beat or two before moving onto the next door.
“Please, our friend needs help!” Caelus begged, slamming his hand against the wood, only to be greeted with silence.
Ten houses went by, nothing, and the snowfall was only growing heavier.
March had run back to Dan Heng, tears pricking up in her eyes, shoulders shaking as she wrapped her arms around herself - the cold starting to get to her too, “No one answering Dan Heng! W-what do we do now?!”
“That old man, I swear…” Dan Heng hissed, clenching his jaw. If they didn’t do something soon then Sunday could…
A loud bang echoed through the streets, causing both Dan heng and March to jump. When they looked in the direction the sound had come from they were greeted with Caelus standing in front of an open door, a bat hanging in his hand.
“Get it quick!” He said urgently, Dan Heng and March not wasting any time before darting into the house, not second glancing at what Caelus had just done. This was an emergency they would save for consequences later if anyone did live here.
Inside the house wasn't much, there was furniture littered about, some photos, and papers littered about. However what was good about this place was that there was a fire place.
The trio rushed into the living room, Dan heng had settled sunday down onto the worn couch, “March go see if this place has any blankets or anything that might help sunday warm up.” He ordered, gently stripping off Sunday's scarf from his head.
“On it!” She saluted before running up the stairs, grabbing anything she could that might assist them.
“Caelus, do you think you can start a fire?” Dan Heng glanced over, taking off the jacket he had given Sunday before taking off the great coat.
Nodding Caelus gathering up the papers that were scattered on the ground, luckily while he was gathering he managed to find some logs tucked into the corner of the room. With items in arms he hurried back to the fire place, tossing the items in the open brick box.
“Let's hope this works.” Muttering under his breath Caelus closed his eyes, manifesting the power of destruction into his body, he could feel his body temperature turn a little warmer, outstretching his hand to try and summon his lance. It took a moment but eventually his lance appeared into his hand, the room growing brighter from the blazing weapon.
Quickly he shoved the tip of the blade against the logs and paper, breathing a sigh of relief seeing the small fire that started to form.
“Fire up and running Dan Heng!” Caelus cheered, looking over his shoulder and giving a thumbs up to a baffled Dan heng.
“Honestly I shouldn’t be surprised anymore,” He huffed, shaking his head, “Nevertheless good job.”
“I got blankets!” March called, fumbling down the stairs with arms full of blankets of different sorts, before racing around the couch, “Will these do?”
“Yes, here help me lay them on him and make sure to tuck him in too.” Dan hand got up from his kneeled position, taking some of the blankets out of her arms before laying them down onto sunday.
Layer by layer they had covered Sunday's body, his head being the only thing to poke out of the pile. March had taken off her ear muffs to place on Sunday's head, tucking his wings under the fuzzy material to give them some much needed warmth.
They all stood around the couch, concerned inch into their features, “Will he be ok…?” March had asked quietly, glancing over.
Dan Heng leaned over, placing two fingertips along Sunday's neck, his shoulders stiffening a bit, feeling Sunday's heart beat flutter. Leaning his head closer to Sunday's mouth, listening how the man's breathing was slowly getting back to normalcy then continuing to be ragged.
“He should be, I’m not sure how long he’s going to be out for but with everything we’ve done hopefully his body temperature will rise up soon.” He sighed, pulling out his phone, “I'm going to contact Mr. Yang and Himeko, While we might have helped a bit, Sunday still needs to go to a doctor, but we're in no position to leave while he's like this.” His fingers were speeding away as he typed out in the group chat they all had.
However, as soon as he had sent the message the next thing that popped up made his stomach sink.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Astral Express Family GC:
Dan Heng: Mr. Yang and Himeko, we have a problem on our hands. Sunday passed out while we were on the search for the batteries we needed. We're in the outskirts of the town located in one of the houses, if you head north you should be able to find us eventually, please come as quickly as you can and bring any medics with you. Seems to be experiencing signs of Hypothermia, We’ve done what we could but unsure if it will help.
*Message could not send, please try again*
Dan Heng cursed underneath his breath, clutching onto his phone tightly, “There's no signal.”
Those three words drained the color out of March and Caelus' face, “You're joking right?” Caelus' lips quivered into a nervous grin, he knew Dan Heng couldn’t tell a joke for the life of him but still there was a first time for everything right?
…seeing Dan Heng stiffly shake his head made knots form in his stomach.
“So do we just wait here until he wakes up…? I don't mean to be the bringer of already bad news but the snow outside doesn’t seem to be lightening up anytime soon! What if we get snowed in?” March whined, glancing out the nearby window, since coming inside the snow seemed to have gotten a couple more inches taller.
“I know it doesn’t look good right now, but we can’t do anything until sunday wakes up - we have to make sure he’s stable when he does, if I’m correct he could be suffering from hypothermia.” he informed, glancing down at the unconscious silver hair male. Adjusting the blanket that laid on top of the pile ever so slightly.
“Hypothermia!? This guy…why didn't he tell us sooner that he wasn't feeling good!” She groaned, scratching at her hair furiously. She had thought since Sunday had been with them for almost a month now he would've been more open to tell them things like this!
Caelus patted her back calmly, “We’ll figure something out March, and when Sunny wakes up we’ll give him one hell of a lecture about health stuff!” He smiled reassuringly down at her, which seemed to perk her up a little more.
“Darn right we will!”
As they waited for their fourth companion to wake up, Dan Heng, March 7th, and Caelus sat around the fireplace, talking amongst themselves and figuring out a plan on how to get back to civilization to get Sunday the medical help he needs.
As they talked something kept gnawing at Caelus, since the moment they got to this part of town something felt wrong to him, “Do you guys think that store owner did this on purpose?” He asked out of the blue.
“Well duh! He had to have known there was nothing out here!” March huffed, crossing her arms over her chest, “He probably got mad that you kept calling him pops or something like that!” she said, pointing an accusing finger towards Caelus who raised his arms up in surrender.
“You think so?” he hummed tilting his head to the side, if that was the case then he shouldn’t have this sinking feeling inside of him right now, it could also be because of what's going on with sunday but…
“Why? Do you think he had ulterior motives?” Dan Heng piped up.
“Maybe? This all just seems weird and a bit too convenient y'know? For starters he didn’t even give us a map to this store, despite knowing this place was basically abandoned and knew we were outsiders too.” He started, holding up one finger as he explained, “Secondly, why would a guy be selling specifically batteries all the way out here? This could just be me but seeing how dead this area is that seems really bad for business.”
Dan heng’s ear flicked at that, he was mostly preoccupied about sundays well being that he didn't really get the chance to connect those dots, but now looking back on it, it was very odd that the owner would have done something like that…
“Thirdly, and I could totally just be reading into this, but that guy just kinda had a glint in his eye y’know?” Caelus continued.
“A glint in his eye?” March had inquired, raising her eyebrows, “what’s that supposed to mean?”
“Like….Like getting a bad vibe from someone! While we were talking to him I kept seeing him glance at the stuff we had gotten,” he continued, snapping his fingers, “But again, this all could just be a me thing. It just seems strange, since we got here I’ve kinda had a bad feeling, but then Sunday collapsed and we had to take care of him first. Yet I’m still having that feeling.”
The room settled into a tense silence, taking in all the information Caelus had just laid upon them. March shifted in place her eyes glancing out the window, “Now that you mentioned it…when we were looking for the “store” I did have a little feeling I was being watched by something.” She confessed quietly rubbing her arm, “I just assumed it might've been a critter or something, but it was washed away after everything with Sunday…”
Once more the room had fallen into a silence, their eyes kept drifting to the window. The outside world became darker as the sun began to set, the snow outside growing heavier by the hour, the wind outside shaking the house softly with how strong it was, likely a blizzard was on the way.
“If you're both having similar feelings then you might be onto something Caelus.” Dan Heng muttered inching slightly closer to the couch Sunday resided on, “Whatever the case, keep on your guard.”
“Right.” March and Caelus nodding in unison.
Chapter Text
“Anything yet?” Himeko had asked, despite asking the same question only just five minutes prior.
“Nothing.” Welt mumbled shifting on his feet as he checked the group chat messages for the twentieth time.
It had been hours since the time they were all supposed to meet up. Welt and Himeko had waited, just assuming that the group was running a little late considering it was Sunday’s and Caelus' first time being on Minda 21 March probably took them to all her favorite shopping spots. Thirty minutes had passed and there was silence, Welt kept glancing at his phone, checking in to see if there was any sort of text from the others.
Nothing.
An hour had passed, no sightings of any of them to be seen.
“Do you think they got lost?” Himeko questioned, pacing back and forth - her feet crunching against the snow fall, worry starting to bubble in her gut.
“With Dan Heng's sense of direction, besides from you, he should've been able to direct them all back here.” Welt muttered, typing on his phone once more to ask the rest of the others locations.
Just like all the other messages he had sent he was met with nothing.
“Maybe they just lost track of time? March is usually known to get distracted whenever she goes shopping.” Welt added, looking up at his red hair companion, who was deep in thought.
“Even if she did, Sunday probably would have reminded her…We both know he doesn’t like being late for things.” She replied, stopping in her tracks, a tense silence falling between the both of them, “Could they be in some sort of danger? It’s usually a common theme whenever we go somewhere…”
At that Welt body stiffened, “...Let’s hope not. How about we wait one more hour, just in case they supposedly just did get lost, but if they're not back we’ll start looking and asking around if anyone saw them.”
Himeko took a deep breath before nodding, “ok, sounds like a plan.”
Which led them to the present, walking around the streets of the city of Esapus, in search of the rest of their crew. Asking store owners, passer byers, locals, and all of that sorts.
Night was quickly approaching and the snow was only growing heavier and heavier as they searched. Another hour passed and at this point they felt like their were only going on a wild goose chase, some people stating they had seen them going into stores and walking around but other than that not really giving anything on where their current location could be.
The last place someone had seen them was a general store, but by the time Himeko and Welt got there it was already closed.
“Still no messages from them…?” Himeko asked quietly, tugging her coat a little tighter around herself.
Welt shook his head gravely, “As much as I don’t want to, we should probably book at a hotel nearby.” Welt sighed, adjusting his scarf, “With how heavy the snow is getting and the wind picking up too it might not be smart to continue like this.”
“Right, we might end up getting lost, plus we don't want to over extend ourselves.” Himeko added, while also not really wanting to put a pause on the search, it wouldn't do them any good to walk aimlessly. Especially not in this weather.
So with heavy hearts and worries bubbling up in the guts the duo headed to a nearby hotel, warmth immediately greeted them as they stepped inside.
“Welcome in! How might I help you folks tonight?” A tall elven woman with dark black curls tied up into a bun called behind the desk, a warm smile adorned her face.
Welt and Himeko walked up, “Evening, two rooms please.” Welt muttered, exhaustion already getting to the best of him.
“My, My quite grim faces! Rough night for you folks?” The woman inquired, reaching back to the wall behind her with rows and rows of keys hanging from it, grabbing two keys and handing them both to Welt and Himeko.
“You can say that,” Welt said grimly, “We lost contact with our other Companions we travel with here. It feels like we’ve looked all over this city but don’t have a clue on where they could be. So you could say we are a little worried.” He sighed, running a hand down his face.
“That's awful…” The woman gasps, placing a hand over her mouth, “What do they look like? I could have some of my co-workers look out for them tomorrow?”
Welt and Himeko began to give the Description of Dan heng, March 7th, and Caelus. However when they started to begin describing Sunday was when the womens face seemed to have light up a bit of familiarity.
“A halovian you say?” She asked, her fingers tapping against the table.
“Yes, Sunday was one of the people in the group, his notable features are his wings and halo.” Himeko added, and something seemed to click.
“One moment, I think I have someone here who saw those exact descriptions.” She said running to the back room, leaving Himeko and Welt waiting with bated breath.
It took a moment but eventually the back door opened once again, The hotel owner looking down at a small elven child with long brown hair and scars scattered on their face. Seeming to have still been waking up by how they rubbed their eyes and were grumbling something.
“I know, I know, but remember the angel man you saw earlier today Allir?” The woman whispered rounding the desk placing both hands on small shoulders, “These people are friends with that man, and they really need help finding him and their other companions.”
Allir glanced up at Himeko and Welt with tired eyes shifting on their feet.
Himeko smiled warmly, kneeling down to be at the same level as Aillir, “Allir was it? Sorry to be disturbing your sleep, but it would really help me and my friend on anything you might have seen about them?” she said softly, tilting her head to the side a little.
“I…I saw them when I was in the general store.” Allir started quietly, keeping their head down, “I was shopping for some items mom needed, I saw the pink hair girl and the grey hair man first, saying something about needing batteries i think…? But the man said he didn't have any.”
Himeko glanced up at Welt as Allir kept explaining.
“Then that's when I saw the angel man, I-I never saw someone like him before and was really curious but I didn’t want to bother him…he looked kinda ill so I thought it might have been best not to disturb him.” Allir continued, as they strung their fingers through their hair anxiously. At that welt shuddered slightly hearing the word sunday and ill in the same sentence.
His worry and now dread were ten folding in his stomach.
“Is there anything else you might've heard or sawn?” Himeko encouraged gently, taking in every information Allir was giving to them.
Allir nodded slightly, “They talked with the store owner some more, and the man mentioned how there was a store in the outer town limits that might have what they were looking for.”
“The outer town? Are you sure?” Miss misty asked, when Allir nodded in confirmation her brows furrowed.
“Why? What's out there?” Welt was the one to ask this time.
“Well that's the thing, nothing’s out there. Over time people found that area to be bad for business and living conditions so they pretty much abandoned that whole area,” Misty explained, waving her hand about, “So it doesn’t make sense for someone to be selling anything out, unless they want to fail in business.”
Silence settled over them, Himeko processing all of this.
Why would he send them all the way out there? From the sounds of it he's a local so why send people to a deserted section? Unless…
“Allir when they left, did you catch it at all if the store owner did or said anything?”
For a moment Allir remained quiet, trying to think back, “I think I heard him chuckle? But not a light hearted type of chuckle I guess? It's kinda hard to describe…” They mumbled chewing on the bottom of their lips, “But after that he announced about closing the shop a little earlier, he mentioned it was because of the heavy snow that was gonna come. Other than that I didn’t see or heard anything else.”
Once more Welt and Himeko glanced at each other, the dots starting to connect with one another.
“Thank you so much for telling us Allir,” Welt said gently, smiling down at them, “That was a big help to us more than you can know.”
“I-Im glad I could help, I hope you're able to find your friends.” their lips curling upwards a bit, before a yawn broked out, their head nodding forwards.
Miss Misty and Himeko both chuckled at the sight, “Alright sweetheart let's get you to bed.” Miss Misty picked up Allir settling their head onto her shoulder, “I also hope you two are able to find them, if you need any help on the search don't hesitate to ask.”
“Thank you Miss, we will let you know. Have a good night you two.” Himeko said lastly before the two departed, her and welt heading up the stairs to their rooms.
In the hallway they both stood, thinking over all the information they were given, and possibly theories forming.
“Lets go over what we learn,” Welt stated, leaning on his cane a bit, “So we at least know they're still together, and that they were still gathering items on the list we provided them so it had to have been noon when they went to the general store.”
Himeko nodded, “Right, although the part where Allir mentioned Sunday looked ill doesn't sound promising…” she continued, biting her lower lip, “He was fine when we first arrived and forming the timeline his health had worsened at some part in the middle. Do we know if Halovians get easily colder in winter climates?”
Welt shook his head, “I’m not certain, I still have yet to understand the biology of Halovians - some things are still a mystery about them.” he added clutching his cane a little tighter, “Regardless It's the best bet that sunday is coming down with a cold.”
“Now onto the store owner,” Himeko hummed, crossing arms over her chest , “He had to have known the location he sent them was abandoned, for him to own a general store he must live in this city for a long time. So why send travelers out into the middle of nowhere?”
Amber eyes met honeyed ones as they both had a hunch, “He has to be up to something, considering after telling them that he closed the store early.” She continued on, “What he could be up to I have a few ideas, but we don't have much to go on unless we actually confront him.”
Welt nodded, “Right, at least we know where they are. So tomorrow we’ll head straight to that area, and hopefully we get there before that man does.” He said quietly, his eyes drifting over to the window at the end of the hallway, snow still falling outside, “I just hope they managed to find some sorts of shelter out there.”
“Me too, I know they can handle themselves but I still can’t help but worry a little…” She confessed quietly shifting on her feet.
“I know what you mean,” welt added looking back over, “The best we can do right now is try and get some rest, we're going to need as much energy for tomorrow seeing as how there's more to play at this.”
“Your right, Good night Welt.”
“Good night Himeko.”
Then they both went into the rooms, getting ready to try and get some sleep. It was a struggle with worry and dread eating away at their younger companions, people who they saw as family, that kept them twisting and turning in their bed.
The night seemed endless like this, neither of them getting quite the rest they were hoping. But eventually the sun rose up again.
Time to move.
Chapter Text
Falling was something Sunday had grown accustomed to at this point. His hair and head wings flapped relentlessly against his face as he could feel the harsh wind hit his back, continuing to descend down, down, and down.
As he was falling into the abyss, whispers from past voices echoed around him, spitting venom of how much he was a failure, that he couldn’t protect anyone, a useless piece of flesh in THEIR gaze, and so much more.
But none of those voices were the ones that brought tears to his eyes. Out of all of them there were two voices Sunday recognized anywhere.
“Why brother…? Why?” A young female voice echoed, her vocals filled with a broken trust.
I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.
“You’ve disappointed me yet again child,” an older man’s voice hissed around him, “I think you're due another punishment don’t you agree?”
I’m sorry, forgive me, please forgive me.
As he descended lower, the colder it had gotten, to the point his tears began to turn into ice.
Sunday knew the ground was coming soon, that’s how it always was in this dream. That no matter how long he fell for eventually the impact of harsh reality would hit him soon enough. Every time he prayed it would come sooner if it meant he wouldn’t have to hear THEM.
However this time around he didn't meet with the ground, instead his back hit against ice cold water. Sunday sank into the frozen water, struggling trying to keep afloat, he failed his arms, desperately kicking his legs, but nothing worked.
His lungs were burning from the lack of air, vision starting to blur, movements becoming more sluggish from the sheer coldness of the water. It felt like his whole body was starting to freeze in place as he continued to sink deeper into the cold abyss.
In a last effort to try and get out of the freezing water Sunday opened his mouth, screaming out to whoever might be listening. Water rushed into his mouth quickly filling his lungs, as every bit of air left his body, his eyes rolling to the back of his head as darkness consumed him once more.
No one answered his call.
Slowly Sunday's eyes fluttered open, the first thing he noticed was there was a weight against his chest. Looking down what was causing the weight to only find a pile of blankets on top of him.
What happened?
The last thing he remembered was going into the general store, the owner there saying he didn’t have the batteries they needed and redirecting them to another location that might have some. After that everything was fuzzy, only small glimpses appearing in his memory but nothing about how he got here…
Golden eyes wandered around his surroundings, trying to gather any new information. To the left of him was a fireplace, the fire inside sent a wave of comforting warmth towards him to which Sunday was grateful for.
There was still a slight tremor going through the Halovian body, despite the layers of blankets on him and the fire that was giving that additional warmth.
That’s when he heard it, voices coming from around the corner, his mind was still trying to catch up with him from its drowsy state that it didn’t quite click yet who the voices belong to.
“H-Hello—?” Sunday called out, his voice strained and shaky soon after a coughing fit broke out, his chest rattling doing so.
That…that can’t be normal.
A small amount of relief washed over Sunday seeing the faces of Dan Heng, March 7th, and Caelus quickly rounding the corner into his point of view.
“Sundaaay!” March cried, throwing herself onto Sunday wrapping her arms around the man’s neck, a small grunt leaving the halovian’s mouth.
A grin broke out on Caelus face as he approached Sunday, poking his cheek, “took ya long enough to wake up sunny! You scared us half to death!”
“Yeah! Why didn’t you tell us you weren’t feeling good!?” She pouted, releasing the hug and poking the other side of Sunday's face.
Sunday, flustered and equally confused, gently pushing away the two hands that relentlessly poked his cheeks, “Apologies… but I-I’m a little confused, what happened e-exactly?” He asked quietly, adjusting the blankets tighter around him.
“You passed out.” Dan Heng spoke up kneeling down next to the fireplace, picking up a mug that was settled next to it before carrying it over and handing it to Sunday, “While we were on our way to that — store, the owner told us about, mid-walk you crumpled and then went unconscious.”
Sunday cradles the warm mug in his hands, looking down at his reflection a mixture of shame and guilt forms on his face.
Pathetic.
“I apologize…I-I guess I pushed my limits a little too much.” He says, taking a small sip from the mug, the warmth of the drink dwelling some of the cold that was in him.
“Sunday, I know you're still adjusting to this new path.” Dan Heng began to say, his jade eyes landing upon golden ones, “but you're not alone anymore, you're part of the Astral Express and it’s our job to look after one another.”
“Exactly! We’er supposed to help each other out, but we don’t know how to help unless you tell us!” March added onto this, crossing her arms over her chest.
Sunday shuddered, opening his mouth before quickly closing it again. His eyes stinged from their words, from the sincerity they held.
This was still new territory for him, where people other than his sister genuinely cared for his well being. This was coming from the same man when he was sick or anything of that such, he would still have to carry on his duties as the head family member, and no one would cast a second glance at him in those moments.
Yet here these three were, going out of their way to make sure he was ok, taking him into shelter, providing him the warmth he needed, and now saying he was one of them . It all felt so foreign to Sunday, these same people who he once fought against, nearly killing them, were doing much more than his “father” or the rest of the oak family ever did for him.
“I…I apolo—“
“Stop apologizing!” Caelus and March said in unison, poking his cheeks once more, which earned a small smile from Sunday.
“Alright, alright, if it-it means you both would stop poking me.” Sunday huffed, once again pushing their hands to the side, “A-and yes I’m still getting used to…all-all of this, regardless t-thank you all for helping me.”
March and Caelus smiled brightly, while Dan Heng's face softened, nodding.
Sunday took another sip out of his mug, a shaky sigh leaving him, “Now that-that part of the dots is connected, where exactly are we right n-now?” He asked, lifting his head, “did someone let us into their home so I-I could recover?”
At that the trio froze in place, sweat dripping down their faces as all their eyes looked in a different direction.
“Well—“ Dan Heng voice cracked, scratching the back of his neck, “not exactly—“
“We had to get you out of the snow as quickly as possible sooo,” Caelus added on, pointing his two finger tips together, “I may or may not have busted down one of the doors so that you didn’t freeze your wings off!”
The wings on Sunday head jerked, choking mid sip, another coughing fit following suit, not expecting to hear that .
“It was the best case scenario! The town was too far, the snow was getting heavier, and this place is basically abandoned so no harm no foul!”
“If you say so…” Sunday sighed, rubbing his temple, “does Mr. Yang and Ms. Himeko know where we are?”
Dan Heng glanced at March, “that’s another problem, there’s no connection out here, we’ve tried multiple times but nothing worked.” Dan Heng explained, placing a hand on his hip, “Plus with your condition, and how much the snow increased last night, we can’t travel just yet.”
“Is it really that b-bad?” Sunday inquired, also not knowing how bad his health really was.
Silence and an uncomfortable tension settled over the room, which only caused more knots to form in Sunday's stomach.
“From my knowledge you check off some of the symptoms for hypothermia.” Dan Heng said slowly, noticing how Sunday shoulders stiffen, “because of that, it’s too risky for you to go outside.”
Sunday remained silent throughout all of this, his hands tightening around the mug, processing everything Dan Heng was telling him. Guess that makes sense considering he still felt cold despite all the blankets and the fire…but still it was hard for him to grasp. He knew it must’ve been bad but didn’t know it was that bad.
“Plus there is also another reason we haven’t set off yet.” Dan Heng added, dragging Sunday out of his thoughts.
“A-and what’s that?”
“Remember the general store owner guy?” March butt in, when Sunday nodded she continued, “well, after we brought you here Caelus pointed out how weird this all was and we all came to the conclusion that guy was definitely up to something!”
Caelus jumped in, “so we decided to camp here in the meantime while we were waiting for you to wake up and also to keep a lookout, so far nothings happened. We’ve heard a few noises but by how hard the wind was blowing it was hard to tell if it was people ruckus or wind ruckus.”
“What do you think h-he’s up to?” Sunday asked, rubbing his pointer and middle finger with his thumb.
“That’s the part we are unsure about,” Dan Heng replied, glancing out the window - it was still early in the morning and the snowfall was now only small flurries, “It could be a multitude of reasons, but considering there hasn’t been anything yet we could try our first plan…”
“First plan?”
“Yeah! To get you help we came up with an idea that Dan Heng could make his way back to Esapus, considering his sense of direction is really good and also he isn’t affected by the cold like us.” March filled in, sitting herself next to Sunday, “But when we connected the dots that there could be more to play we held it off because the last thing we wanted is that creep to jump him, even though Dan Heng could easily kick his butt.”
Sunday nodded, still processing everything, to his condition and now the potential of something more nefarious. His head still felt a bit groggy from all of this, probably one of the many symptoms of hypothermia. It took a beat or two to fully grasp all of this, which was very uncommon of him to do, and he hated it.
Useless, get yourself together.
“You ok sunny?” Caelus reached out, placing his hand on Sunday's trembling shoulder, briefly pulling him out of the fog.
Shrugging in response, hesitating, he shook his head, “It’s just…it’s just a lot for me to take in right now. My mind feels a-all distorted and it’s just a bit hard to f-focus at times.” He confessed, tilting his head down as knots formed in his stomach.
Useless, Pathetic, weak.
“It’s ok!” March quickly reassured, “we did pile that all on you while you were still waking up. So that’s our bad, do you need anything? Like another coat, more water, or—“
Sunday raised his hand, silencing March, “I’m fairing for right now with everything you lot have already provided.” This time it was him doing the reassuring, “I might just need more rest, because again taking all this new information of perhaps being followed…and then me having hypo— “
His words were interrupted as the front door crashed onto the ground, making all of them - except Sunday - jump to their feet.
6 men made their way inside of the house, all of them carrying a weapon of different sorts. The first man who walked in instantly struck recognition to all of them, it was the store owner, he wore a sly grin on his face.
“Finally found you brats.” He chuckled, twirling a crowbar in his hands, “I didn’t think you lot would actually break in one of these places to avoid the storm last night, but I guess I didn’t plan that far ahead. Thankfully though we managed to spot you out because of the smoke coming from the chimney .”
Dan Heng glared at the men, taking a step forward, “What do you want?”
“Straight to the point hm? Fine for me.” Slowly he raised the crowbar up, pointing it at all of them, “Let’s make this easy, I saw all the stuff you lot were getting meaning you must have a lot of credits on you yeah? So how about you hand that over, then me and my pals won’t have to hurt you.”
Three of the men raised guns as the other two held out spears.
“And if you decide not to do that, then I can’t promise you’ll be leaving here without a few injuries.”
Chapter Text
Quickly Caelus summoned his trusted bat, making the men immediately charge forward with their own weapons trained.
Swinging he managed to hit one of the brutes sending him flying backwards towards the end of the hallway, then just barely missing the other guy which would be his reckoning. The guy he missed managed to hit him in the side, making him stumble a grunt escaping through gritted teeth.
“Caelus!” Dan Heng called out, summoning his spear before quickly running over to give support.
The two men with the guns trained their focus on March and Sunday, “Watch out!” Sunday gasped as he grabbed march, diving them both quickly onto the ground before 2 blasts of energy flew over their hands.
As the two made impact on the floor Sunday squeezed his eyes shut as he began to cough and hack, his whole body shaking once more.
“Sunday!” March cried, quickly sitting him up and rubbing his back.
“T-thank you, But I’m–” Sunday coughed into his hand, his wings quivering, once more he had that sensation of his lungs that felt like they were rattled each time he coughed.
The two men with the guns rushed around the couch, reloading their weapons, but before they could shoot, the march was quicker and was able to summon her bow, shooting two arrows at the men, striking the weapons out of their grasp.
After that sunday widened his eyes, glaring at the men as he summoned his odes of harmony - causing a high pitch frequency to go through their minds, both of them instantly crumbling to their feet as they clutch their heads.
“T-that should subdue them for a while.” Sunday panted, curling a little on himself - the bitter cold starting to make its way back into his system.
“Nice work! Now let's get you outta here!” March said, helping Sunday onto his feet, his legs felt weak but with march’s support he managed.
The two of them hurried as best as they could towards the kitchen, while Dan Heng and Caelus kept Fighting it out with the rest of the men. March felt a little guilty she couldn’t do more right now to help them out, but with the state Sunday was in she needed to get him out of there.
Once in the kitchen March dragged Sunday to the nearby staircase, “c’mon up the stairs!” She urgently said, the two starting to make up.
With each step the wood groaned underneath their weight, almost feeling like one wrong step would break the wood underneath their feet.
Just before they got to the top, a hand gripped Sunday's ankle, “where do you think you're going? You're missing all the fun—!” The store owner grinned, yanking him back with full force.
Sunday grunted as he was pulled back, falling forward - his head hitting on one of the edges of the step, black spots immediately taking over his vision from the impact.
“Sunday! Let go of him!” March shouted, aiming her bow at the man, but before she could shoot he was one step ahead of her.
In the next second the man was able to pull Sunday against him, wrapping an arm around his throat holding the crowbar up, “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” He chuckled darkly, tightening his grip making Sunday gasp, “if you shoot you’ll also be hitting him, and also seeing how much he’s shivering as well I don’t think it would be smart using those ice powers of yours.”
Sunday was still dazed after hitting his head, his brain barely focusing on everything that was happening to him. The only thing he could register was something cutting off his airway, his hands coming up to claw at the arm at his throat although it was sluggish and shaky.
“You're playing dirty!” She said her bow was still drawn but there was hesitation in her eyes.
“Say whatever ya’ want, I tried to give you lot a chance but now it’s come to this.” He sighed, shaking his head.
“Oh so it's our fault we didn’t wanna get mugged?! What kinda logic is that!”
The man merely tightened his grip tighter against Sunday's throat, causing him to gasp once again and cough, his head wings fluttering anxiously.
March flinched and slightly lowered her bow, “ok, ok! Just stop choking him!”
The grip lessened slightly giving Sunday the ability to breath finally, but the man didn’t let go of him. Instead he started to drag Sunday along with him seeing as now he had leverage, he couldn’t just simply let him go.
Sunday started to get his bearings in him again struggling against the grasp of the store owner's grip. He was dragged back towards the entrance of the home, the cold air of the open door hitting him much harder than he would've liked it, his whole body began to shake and all the warmth he had gathered seemed to vanish in that split second.
Cold, Cold, Cold.
“Alright listen up you brats!” The man spat, his grip once again tightening around Sunday's throat, “If you don’t want your bird friend here getting hurt, I suggested laying down your weapons.” His words seemed to have struck Caelus and Dan Heng, as soon as their eyes caught Sunday they froze in place.
Damnit Sunday get yourself together! You’ve already been Useless through this entire trip, so what if your mind feels like in a dense fog, you've been through worse, you've dealt with worse. Get. It. Together!
As much as his head was pounding, Sunday glared back at the man holding him, once more summoning the odes of harmony. Like before a high pitch frequency went through the man's psyche, the man easily became distraught by this.
But instead of crumbling to the floor, the man had Flung sunday outside into the bitter cold.
His body landed into the freezing snow below him, basically covering his whole body, he coughed as Sunday curled in himself to try and gather whatever left over warmth there was, but there was nothing.
The next second a harsh kick landed on his back, a strained shout leaving him.
“What the hell did you do!?” The store owner curse, still clutching onto his head, “What the fuck was that, make it stop!” He spat sending another kick to sunday.
Shouting was coming from inside as Caelus, Dan Heng, and March 7th desperately tried to get outside to help their companion, but the other men kept getting in the way and fighting them.
“Fine, if you won’t stop it then I guess I'll just have to do it for you!!” The store owner shouted, raising up his crowbar into the air.
Sunday could only bring up his shivering arms up to his face, to try and prepare the impact that was to land on him. Squeezing his eyes shut and really wishing a part of him took on more self defense lessons.
Clang!
He opened his eyes, that…that wasn’t a noise he had expected.
When he lowered his arms, the first thing he had noticed was that tge man had a bewildered expression on the man, the crowbar no longer in his hand. What he also was that the man's eyes were not on Sunday, his head was turned to the left.
Sunday followed, his own eyes widening seeing 2 figurines not that far away.
A woman with red hair, a drone hovering around her, and a man with brown hair and a cane.
Himeko and Welt yang
“I suggest you step away from him, unless you want this to hit you next.” Himeko, while she had a smile on her face, her voice was cold and threatening, a dark shadow casting on her face.
“You have the count of three.” This time it was welt, who sounded much more deadlier, there was a glint in his eyes sunday has never witnessed before.
“One.”
The store owner was still baffled by everything that just happened; his brain hadn’t fully registered the words Welt and Himeko just said.
“Two.”
Finally he jerked back, “Fall back guys! Think we bit off more than we chewed!” He shouted, though none of his companions answered him, instead of them coming out of the house it was the trio.
And they looked equally pissed.
“Three. Times up.”
The guy wasn't even given a chance before Welt was right up in his face, a purple energy lighting around his form - his cane especially was glowing. He raised his cane up into the air.
One second the man was up, the next he was out like a light.
A tense silence hung in the air for a moment, it was over. The only thing breaking everyone from their daze was Sunday's violent coughing that bursted out.
Immediately everyone rushed towards the Halovian man, Welt kneeling next to him, shrugging off his coat and putting it back on sunday.
“Stay awake ok sunday? We’ve got you.” He said wrapping his coat and scarf tightly around Sunday's shaking form, noticing a bruise was starting to form on the younger man's temple.
“We’ve got a fire in the house but–” Dan Heng said, glancing back where more unconscious bodies resided inside.
Himeko sighed, “While I don’t want to take him back in there with all these men still around, it's the best case right now.” She said adjusting the scarf Welt had given Sunday to cover his ears and wings, “A medic Vehicle is one the way, we had someone contact them while we were on our way, but we don't know how far behind it is, especially in this snow.”
“H-hard to…to stay awake…” Sunday voice slurred, his vision once again getting blurry.
“Sunday sweetheart you have to stay awake.” Himeko added, lightly tapping his cheek, “I know it's hard, but just for a bit longer.”
“H-how long is the vehicle supposed to be delayed? He needs help now!” March shifted on her feet, anxious and unsure what she could do.
“Soon hopefully, for right now we have to get him back inside, his lips are already turning blue.” Welt said, scooping Sunday up into his arms - with Caelus also assisting Welt into standing up.
The group rushed back inside, once again setting Sunday on the couch and bundling him with blankets. Welt remained at Sunday's side, hugging him close to offer as much body heat as he could while the others either built up the fire or rounded up the unconscious bodies on the floor.
“I-I’m sorry Mr. Yang…I-I should h-have done more.” Sunday muttered, embarrassment and shame eating away at him being like this, he once again felt like a burden even though March, Dan Heng, and Caelus had reassured him earlier that he wasn’t.
But old habits die hard.
Welt merely patted his back, “This isn’t your fault Sunday, you did more than enough considering the state you're in.” He reassured, adjusting the blankets on Sunday, “I’m just glad we got to you when we did, we were worried about you guys especially after hearing you looked ill.”
A shudder went down Sunday's body, his eyes stinging once more, hearing that from welt shouldn’t make him feel like crying. Hearing someone say they were worried about him made his chest tight, it didn’t sit right, the only other person who said he was worried about him was…
Robin.
Small tears formed in the corner of his eyes, unable to stop them he crushed his face against welt chest. Not wanting the rest to seem him more in a pitiful state.
Welt didn’t utter a word, he just tightened his grasp on Sunday, resting his chin on top of silver hair.
He was glad they found him too.
Minutes fly by, Dan Heng and Caelus manage to wrangle the rest of the men, tying them up and watching over them in the kitchen.
March kept looking out the window, waiting for the vehicle to show up, anxiously shifting on her feet. Himeko was standing next to her, a hand resting on March’s shoulder to try and give her reassurance.
Finally after what seemed like forever, a siren was heard in the distance, March immediately running outside, waving the vehicle over.
One thing lead to another and Sunday was transferred to the back of the vehicle, laying down on a stretcher with a heated blanket on top of him.
There was just one problem.
“There’s not enough room to fit all of you, the most I can fit is two other people. The authorities are their own way to give you all a lift.” One of the medics informe, glancing at all of them, conflict shifting through their features.
Himeko was the first to speak up, placing a hand on Welt's back, “You should go with him Welt.” She said with a small smile on her face, “March you go too, Sunday might need your energy when he starts to feel better.”
“Are you sure Himeko? Shouldn’t you go with him?” Welt asked not wanting to leave the others behind.
“It’s fine, I want to ensure that those men are taken away when the authorities get here, plus also I want to hear Dan Heng and Caelus' views on what happened.” Himeko said, pushing him and March closer to the vehicle, “now go you two, we’ll both meet you at the clinic.”
“...Ok, see you there.”
With that the two settled in the back of the vehicle next to Sunday's bed. At some point during the transportation he had fallen asleep, his chest slowly rising and falling as the cat started up and moved.
The tension in the air was thick as the two of them sat in silence, the only noise forming was the engine of the truck, the machines that were in the back with them, and Sunday's ragged breathing.
After several minutes March finally spoke up, her voice barely above a whisper, “is he gonna be ok…?”
Welt glanced down at her, seeing how March had reached out to Sunday placing her hand on the edge of the stretch. His gaze softened as he wrapped his arm around her shoulder, pulling her into a side hug.
“He will be.”
Notes:
Himeko and welt made it just in time before things couldev gone really bad Yippieee!!! Sorry if my fighting writing isn’t the best it’s my first time doing it lol, same with Sundays powers I kinda took a shot in the dark he could do something with high pitch frequencies cuz it makes sense in my mind??? Idk, never the less hope you like it!
Chapter Text
Hours passed since they had arrived at the clinic in town, Sunday was pushed in and immediately treated. The doctors had said they were lucky and did the right steps in helping Sunday with his hypothermia. If it weren’t for what they did his condition could have been in a much worse state than what it already was.
Welt and March felt like they could actually breathe when the doctors informed them that Sunday would be fine and make a full recovery, however he would have to stay in the clinic for a day or two just to ensure Sunday's body temperature reached back up without any further risks.
The only other injuries Sunday had sustained with the encounter back at the house was a mild concussion and some bruisings.
Welt also insisted that March also got a check up just to be sure, even though she told him she was alright, march did it anyways to bring some peace to welt. Luckily she hadn’t sustained any injuries, the most she was suffering from was the sniffles due to being out in the cold for a long period of time.
Currently the two of them were sitting in the room Sunday was assigned in, the man was still asleep with now a different set of warmer clothes, a thermal blanket laying on top of him, and a banaged wrapped around his head covering the bruise that resided underneath it.
Despite all the warmer attire, Sunday's body was still slightly shivering, though it was a better improvement compared to earlier.
March kept fiddling with her phone, to try and get herself distracted, a couple minutes ago they had gotten a text message from Himeko that they were at the Authorities headquarters. Mentioning how they were giving their side of the story and so and so, adding that they would be at the clinic once they finished up.
She reclined in the chair she was in, glancing at Sunday's sleeping form, “When did the doctor say he was supposed to wake up again?”
Welt was sitting on the opposite side of the bed, his hand brushing back some strands of hair out of sundays face, “Probably not until later tonight, his body temperature got dangerously low and after everything it must've taken a lot out of him.” he informed glancing over at the pink hair girl, “March, are you doing alright?”
The question made March flinch, not really expecting it. She shrugged and tilted her head down, “I dunno, I just…” She trailed off chewing at the bottom of her lip.
“You know you can always talk to me if something is plaguing you.” Welt said softly, seeing the confliction march was dealing with, he knew something had been bothering her since getting in the vehicle but didn’t want to push or pry too much considering all the chaos that happened.
After a moment of march opening and closing her mouth she looked back up at welt, “I just feel guilty. I feel like I let that guy basically grab sunday…I just felt like I could've done more to help him but I couldn’t and he ended up more hurt when he's already sick…” She sniffled, small tears pricking at the corner of her eyes which she quickly wiped away.
Welt remained silent for a moment, making sure march got out everything she wanted to say, when there was nothing more he spoke, “March what happened wasn’t your fault, if anyone is at fault here it was those men. You did everything you could to help and protect sunday by trying to get him out of that situation, even up until sunday was in his grasp you still tried to protect him.” He said standing up from the chair he was in and walking over to march, placing a hand on top of her hair, “You did what you could and that's what matters.”
A small smile formed on March’s face as she wiped away another tear, “Thanks Mr. Yang…I just hope he doesn't hate me…” She said quietly, because that was her main worry, she thought maybe Sunday would hate her because she didn’t take the shot or saw her weak.
The hand that was on top of her hair ruffled slightly, “I doubt he would hate you from something that wasn’t your fault.” Welt reassured, a sigh escaping him, “Sunday doesn’t have a hateful heart, while he's still learning a lot of things that part doesn’t sit right with his character. But I think you should still talk to him when he’s up for it, to bring you both some ease.”
March stayed silent for a bit, intaking all of Welts' words, before finally nodding, “Yeah, you're right as always Mr. yang.” She looked up to him, earning another hair ruffle to which this time she laughed, shooing away the hand.
While Welt didn’t say it out loud he knew he too would have to talk to Sunday about all of this.
An hour passed when Himeko, Dan Heng, and Caelus finally arrived at the clinic after giving their stories. The group surrounding the still sleeping Sunday went into small talk amongst themselves, Himeko's hand at some point made its way into Sunday's hair - threading through it.
Night fall soon came, the group deciding to go get some dinner from a nearby place - the trio hadn’t realized how hungry they were until finally being able to relax when all the stomachs rumbled in unison.
Welt decided to stay behind just in case Sunday were to wake up. Sitting back in his designated chair and hoped that their halovian companion would wake up soon.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sunday knew he was somewhere different by the smell alone, the scents of antiseptics overwhelming his nose as he first arose. It was a slow start, his body slightly arched causing a groan to slip past his lips, before slowly his eyes fluttered open, wincing slightly at the blinding light above him.
He quickly used his head wings to cover his eyes from the blinding light, blinking rapidly behind them as he adjusted. This time he turned his head to the side so he wouldn’t be blinded before removing the wings from his face.
Immediately he had spotted Welt sitting in a chair next to him, the older man was scrolling on his phone still had yet to notice Sunday was awake.
“M-Mr. Yan–” Sunday strained, coughing right after he spoke which immediately caught Welts attention.
Quickly he got up from the chair, helping Sunday sit up and rubbing his back, “Easy, easy, here drink this.” Welt said gently, handing Sunday a cup of water that was next to the bed.
Sunday took the cup in his slightly trembling hands, taking small sips out of it. He hadn’t realized how dehydrated he must've been considering the water got rid of the dryness in his throat.
“Thank you Mr. Yang.” he sighed with relief, lifting his hand to rub his throbbing head, flinching slightly when he felt a bandage on it.
“You hit your head pretty bad back there,” Welt filled in, noticing the confusion on Sunday's face, “The doctors noted that you gained a mild concussion, though it should only last for a few days - as well as the bruise hiding underneath it.”
He could only nod as welt informed him of everything that happened after he had fallen asleep again, frankly sunday felt a little embarrassed by all of this. Being overwhelmed by so much affection and genuine care felt a bit all too much in a new territory he didn’t think he really deserved .
Without realizing it, Sunday started picking at the cuff of the sweater, adjusting it and readjusting it to get it at a perfect angle. But no matter how many times he did it, it never felt right.
Useless even doing something so simple.
Welt picking up on Sunday's silence and his nervous tendency, he gently reached over and placed his hand on top of Sunday's hand stopping his movements, “Sunday, are you alright?”
It was such a simple question, one Sunday could easily be dismissed by saying ‘yes I'm alright there's no need to worry.’ likes he's done a million times in the past. But at this moment he couldn't even open his mouth without having the urge to cry again.
Sunday felt awful, this was all too much for him. Sunday didn’t deserve their kindness after how pathetic and utterly useless he was for the past two days, he was honestly surprised how none of them had lectured him for that. Why weren’t they doing that? Earlier at the house instead of blaming him for everything that happened they had instead reassured him that he wasn't alone, and that they could go to them for any troubles he had.
He didn’t understand, never thought he would ever understand the warmth and kindness these people just so easily give out. It hurt more realizing how easy they can give out yet his “Father” could never do that, he was the complete opposite and never showed an ounce of this type of kindness to sunday, not even when he was a child.
“Sunday?” Welt called out again, pulling him out of his thoughts, the hand on top of his own squeezed softly.
“Why?” Sunday's mouth finally worked, his voice cracked as his eyes blurred, trying everything to keep the tears that were threatening to spill at bay, “Why-Why are you all being so… nice to me? I-I don’t understand I didn’t do anything to warrant this, I was weak and helpless at the house. Shouldn’t you all be u-upset with me?”
Welt was a little taken aback from what sunday was saying, “Sunday we would never be upset at you from something like this, you got sick not only that but you're dealing with hypothermia - it's completely understandable you wouldn’t be at your all when you're like this.” He began to say, his brows creasing with concern on the multiple reasonings on why Sunday thought this way, “It’s our job to look out for one another when one of us aren't at our best, if anything this is just the basics, in my eyes you are more than deserving for all of this and more.”
The basics? Hearing that all of this was the basics seemed unreal to Sunday because surely this wasn't…then again with how he grew up a lot of basic needs seemed unreal or too much to him then probably a lot of people. But also hearing he deserved more from the same man that took him into this little express family made his chest ache painfully.
The damned broke and tears started falling from Sunday's eyes, his wings covering his eyes once more to hide them. A small sob breaking from his lips as he hunched in on himself, “Apologizes, I-I don’t mean to cry I just–” Sunday stuttered, trying to get rid of the overflowing tears, this was the last thing he needed right now.
At first Welt said nothing, letting Sunday emotions run its course because it looked like he needed something like this, a good cry.
‘Better out than’ in welt would always say, after a moment he spoke up, “Do you want a hug?” he asked carefully, it wouldn’t be his first time seeing sunday in this state - and doubt it would be the last, so at some point Welt had always asked this question.
Everytime the request was brought up it always made sunday freeze, catching him off guard. Again this was all still new to Sunday, especially physical affection, the whole crew has at least hugged him once, all having different values in them.
When it came to welt hugs however, there was a fatherly sense to it, one Sunday never had received before. Gopherwood never gave him a hug, patted his back, or any of that sorts, the most physical he would get with Sunday was either past punishments or squeezing his shoulder to the point it would bruise.
Maybe it was why everytime Welt had asked him, Sunday would always nod.
Without missing a beat Welt wrapped his arms around Sunday, pulling him into a tight hug as he whispered reassurances to him.
More tears fell out of Sunday's eyes as he gave up trying to hide them, full on sobbing into the older man’s chest, apologizing over and over again.
“This isn’t your fault Sunday, none of this was your fault, and we don’t think any less of you for everything that’s happened.” Welt murmured, rubbing circles against Sunday's back, “Everything's going to be ok, you're going to be ok, you're safe and here with us.”
Sunday felt a bit childish every time this happened, he was an adult so he should act like one…and yet every time this happened, when someone gave him a hug or just comforted him in general, it made him feel slightly better. Grounding him from the horrific thoughts and the too many “what ifs” that were swimming around in his mind, sometimes it was enough to let him know things would be ok even if it was for just a moment.
They stayed like this for a couple moments, sundays sobbing eventually turning into quiet sniffles, while welt kept him in the embrace still reassuring him. While also being like this it brought more warmth to Sunday's still shivering body, dwelling some of the bitter coldness from within.
Eventually Sunday broke away, wiping away the rest of the tears.
“How do you feel now?”
A small smile made its way on Sunday's face, “Slightly better t-than before, Thank you Mr. Yang and truthfully I-I do mean that, but I am exhausted after crying so much.” he confessed, stifling a yawn as he leaned back against the pillows.
“Of course, You know I’m always here for you if you need anything, and I mean that too.” Welt smiled, lightly patting Sunday's head, “Get some rest, do you want me to wake you if the others come back?”
Sunday nodded, “Yes, I want to thank them for helping me a lot back at the house, and also to Miss Himeko dealing a blow to that man before things got worse.” he sighed, bringing his hand up again to rub his bandaged head.
Welt chuckled lightly, “Gotcha, then I’ll wake you when they do.”
It didn’t take long for Sunday to fall back asleep, feeling more relaxed compared to a few minutes ago. Welt settled back into his chair, letting out a long sigh of relief as he adjusted his glasses, casting a glance at Sunday.
In time he was going to be ok, and Sunday would have the support he needs to get there.

Chapter Text
Just like Welt had promised when the others came back from dinner he woke Sunday up from his slumber.
Both Caelus and march practically jumped at him, wrapping their arms around him, crying from relief and joy seeing their friend awake.
“You're finally awake!” March chimed, practically squeezing Sunday to death.
“We thought you would never wake up!” Caelus cried, also basically squeezing Sunday to death.
Sunday patted their arms, a strained smile on his face, “While I appreciate both-both of your concerns–” He choked, trying to squirm his way out of their but to no avail, “I c-can’t really breathe–”
Immediately both Caelus and march let go, sputtering out apologies, on the sidelines Dan Heng sighed, shaking his head, while Himeko giggled lightly.
“Sorry again, we were just so relieved to see ya finally awake that I guess we went a little overboard on the happy reunion.” Caelus chuckled nervously, scratching the back of his head.
Sunday waved them off, chuckling lightly, “Don’t worry I understand, a-again I appreciate both of your concerns so-so no harm no foul.” he reassured them, smiling slightly seeing the two of them letting out a breath of relief.
Himeko walked over, standing beside Sunday's bed, “How are you feeling? We brought back some take out for you and Welt if you're hungry.” She smiled, pulling out a small styrofoam box, to which Sunday took greatly.
“Thank you M-Miss Himeko, I’m feeling slightly better compared to how I was back at the house, still feeling a bit cold b-but a better improvement at least.” He said, opening the box revealing an assortment of veggies and steamed fried rice, taking the fork that was inside the box and scooping up some of the rice.
The taste wasn't much, but the warmth of the food brought a comfort to sunday and the chillness inside of him he desperately needed. Plus after not eating anything for almost two days was doing him wonders.
“I’m glad to hear that! The doctors mentioned keeping you overnight just to ensure your body temperature rises back to normalcy. When that happens we’ll be able to head back to the express,” Himeko informed, handing Welt his own box of food before settling into another chair nearby, “Oh and Pom-Pom wishes a quick recovery for you.”
Sunday's face flushed a little at that last part, even Pom-Pom was worried about him which was honestly a little surprising.
Placing down the fork in his hand, he cleared his throat looking at everyone in the room, “By the way I…I wanted to thank you a-all for helping me out so much for theses past couples of days, weather that was helping warming me back up, to protecting m-me from those men, and also comforting me a-about a few things.” Sunday said, his fingers picking at a loose string on the blanket, “I don’t know what would've h-happened without all of your help, so again thank you.”
Caelus squeezed Sunday's shoulder lightly with a bright smile on his face, “Well first off you probably would've turned into a popsicle!” He humored, March flicked his ear from the comment before continuing, “But we're just glad you're ok Sunny, But seriously next time tell us when you're not feeling good!”
“I second that! Minus the popsicle part,” Marched chimed in next, her gaze softening a little, “I'm really glad you're feeling better, I won't lie - I was a bit freaked out when you first passed out…so seeing some color on your face again has been a huge relief.”
Dan Hang walked towards the bed, placing his hand on the edge of it, “Like I said back at the house, you're not alone anymore, you can rely on us for anything and no thanks should be needed.” He said softly, his mouth curling upwards just a bit, “We're supposed to look out for one another, so it’s the least we can do.”
Small tears pricked up again at the corner of Sunday's eyes, merely wiping them away before they could shed as a genuine smile formed on his face. Unsure of how to really respond to all of their words he nodded, the wings on his head flapping softly.
Himeko and Welt shared a glance, smiling at the interactions, “I’m just happy that you're all safe and sound now, you lot had me and Welt gained more grey hairs when we couldn’t find you.” She chuckled lightly, welt beside her choking on his food at the grey hair comment
A light laughter echoing around the room as Welt slightly muttered under his breath “I’m not that old.”
“Anway at some point we should thank Miss Misty and allir for their help, without them I don’t think we would’ve been able to find out where all you were and…” she trailed off the picture of the man looming over Sunday with the crowbar in his hand just about to strike popped into her mind, shaking the thought away she sighed, “The important thing is that your all here, and those men will get what’s coming to them.”
Sunday seemed to perk up a little at that, he was out for the majority of the day so he hasn’t learnt yet of what happened to them, “Speaking of w-which, what’s going to happen to-to those men?” He asked, taking another bite of his food.
Dan Heng this time was the one to inform, “Well one thing we learnt about was that apparently this wasn’t the first time this group did something like this, there were a few reports before about some muggings happening around that area.” He began crossing his arms over his chest, “ The only thing was though that no one said what the people looked like, the leader mentioned they would threaten the lives of the persons families or the individual if they exposed their identities.”
To any ordinary person they might not be able to pick it up because of how stoic Dan Heng was, but the astral express crew had known him for years to hear the disdain in his voice.
“So it’s a safe bet those guys are gonna be locked up for a pretty long time, that store owner guy was pissed when he realized his charade was up.” Caelus added with a smug smirk.
Everyone in the room nodded, Sunday humming in response, “That’s g-good, hopefully their group was the only one doing that, and hopefully the pervious v-victims are able to rest a little easier now too.” He sighed, taking another bite of his food.
“There is another thing we need to discuss about,” Welt said, placing his box of food in his lap, glancing over to Sunday, “Sunday is the reason why you get colder easier in this climate because of your Halovian biology?”
Sunday flinch a little, he had a similar thought process when they were trying to find the “store” considering the others didn’t seem as affected to the cold compared to him, “It's a p-possibility, I lived in Penacony for a majority of my life and w-weather there didn’t exist.” He mumbled looking down at the food, there were still so many unknown things about Halovian biology.
The only thing that made him connect the dots was that it was common nature for birds to travel to warmer climates when it got colder or else they would freeze. Perhaps it was a similar thing for them, if they stayed in a cold climate for too long without proper attire then they too would freeze.
“I only know one-one other person you might be able to ask more about t-this. She traveled to different p-planets with all types of weather, so she might know more a-about it than I.” Sunday said bleaky, everyone in the room knowing the ‘she’ Sunday was referring to with how they all shifted a little where they stood, “Other than that I-I don’t really know why, it could also b-be because of how long I’ve stayed in the dreamscape my body isn’t use to other climates since I haven’t e-experienced anything like them since perhaps childhood?”
Everyone seemed a little shocked hearing that, “Really so you're telling us you haven’t left Penacony since you were a kid?! You’ve never traveled with Rob–” March stopped her words when Sunday's shoulders stiffen, “I-I mean you didn’t travel at all as a family head?”
After a moment Sunday stiffly shook his head, “No, I had a l-lot of responsibilities even as a child to prepare to be the F-Family Head, and when I did eventually become it I was even busier, plus there are other reasons I wish n-not to discuss…” He sighed, closing the box suddenly not really having an appetite anymore.
The room fell into a small uncomfortable silence, after a moment or two welt cleared his throat, “Well either way - next time we’ll just make sure to get you better clothing that can handle this type of weather.”
“And also next time please communicate with us when you are feeling unwell sunday, so if this were to happen we can handle it.” Himeko spoke afterwards, her gaze softening.
Sunday nodded, a faint blush running back to his face, “Right I-I’m still adjusting to d-doing that. But I will inform you all i-if that should happen a-again.”
After that the room went back into normalcy, chattering happening amongst one another about simpler things. An hour passed when a knock came to the door, before a nurse stepped inside clipboard in hand.
“Evening folks! Just letting you all know visiting hours are over–”
“But I thought you said–” March whined but the nurse continued.
“Except – the people who are assigned to stay the evening with Mr. Sunday as asked. There are extra futons, blankets, and pillows in a storage closet nearby so when you head to bed for the night you may grab them.” She stated lastly before leaving the room to inform the other guest the same statement.
Welt and Himeko stood up from their chairs, collecting their coats, “Alright we’ll leave you youngsters to rest, please make sure to not stay up too late for Sunday's state.” Welt hummed, grabbing his cane, leaving Sunday confused about what was happening.
“I don’t u-understand what's going on?” He glanced at the trio who all had a smile in different sizes as he asked.
“We're gonna have a sleepover!” March exclaimed, throwing her hands in the air, “We asked the doctors if we could stay for the night, they were a bit hesitant but when Caelus threw in his sad puppy dog eyes they finally complied!”
“Told you guys it works every time hehe!” He chuckled.
The look on Sunday's face was a mixture of flabbergasted, shock, and relief. They really went through all of that just to stay with him? On their own terms too?
Once more a smile warmed its way onto Sunday face, once again feeling grateful to be surrounded by these kind people.
“If you guys need anything either ask one of the nurses or contact us, got it?” Himeko said, holding a little authority tone in her voice.
“Yes Himeko!” they all said in unison.
“Good, we’ll see you all tomorrow morning.” She said lastly before Welt and she left the room, their footsteps echoing down the hallway.
Dan Heng tapped Caelus' shoulder pointing at the doorway, “Let's go grab the beddings the nurse mentioned to get ready for the evening. I could use some extra hands carrying them.” Caelus nodded, before the two of them also headed out into the hallway to grab the items leaving march and sunday in the room.
While they waited, march kept fidgeting with her fingers, her face looking conflicted, Sunday seemed to pick up on it his brows furrowing, “M-march? Is everything ok?” he asked, causing her to jump a little.
“Oh! Um yeah I just…” She trailed off, biting her lower lip as she thought of what to say next. thinking about the conversation her and Welt had earlier, fears of sunday being upset with her because of everything that happened but not knowing unless she asked him personally, “Sunday can I ask you something?”
The question held a slight tremor as March spoke, which only caused Sunday to worry even more, “Of course, is something t-troubling you?”
At first she said nothing, her mouth opening before closing again, taking a deep breath her gaze finally met Sundays, “Are you…upset at me at all for what happened at the house? It’s been eating away at me a bit since I could’ve done more but…”
Sunday's eyes widened a little at the confession, shaking his head, “I would never be upset a-at you for what happened, y-you couldn’t predict he would do something like t-that.” He quickly reassured, having no clue March felt that way, “If a-anything I should be thanking you for p-pulling me away from all that chaos, I don’t k-know what would've happened if you didn’t knock those men's weapons out of their hands.”
Hearing that seemed to stunned March a little, “You mean you aren’t mad at me that guy grabbed you…? Even though you got more hurt from it and possibly worse if Himeko–”
“But that didn’t happen, I’m h-here safe and sound because of all your guys helping march.” Sunday added gently, “I barely could even think properly because of h-how I was feeling and if it w-wasn't your quick thinking and then Miss Himeko and Mr. Yang s-stepping in when they did I could be in a w-worsen state but I’m not thanks to all of y-you.”
Tears swelled in Marchs eyes as she approached Sunday, gently wrapping her arms around him as she settled her hand onto his shoulder, “Thanks, I…I really needed to hear that, I’m glad you're ok.” She said quietly sniffling.
Slowly Sunday returned the gesture, gently patting her back, “I’m glad none o-of you were hurt during that encounter either. I know I don’t s-say it a lot, you know I’m not one to s-show a lot of affection but…I’m glad to be a-apart of the express.”
That seemed to get a smile back on March’s face as she pulled back, “Good because you are one of us! And don’t forget it!” they both chuckled, Caelus and Dang heng reentering the room with all the items in hand.
In time the three of them started setting up their bedding for the night, once more soft chatter going around the room, before eventually they all decided it was time to turn in for the night.
Although the bedding they grabbed seemed to be not much of use, considering all three of them decided at some point in the night to bunk with sunday. Dan Heng settled on the right side, March on the left, and Caelus at the foot of the bed using a chair to prop up his feet. Normally Sunday would probably have a problem with this for a multitude of reasons - especially for Caelus back - but for tonight he would let it slide, either because he was too exhausted to fight back, or because he could feel the warmth return to him when they were by his side.

Chapter Text
Morning came soon enough, hours passed of doctors giving Sunday check ups, medications, and more before giving him the all clear he was good to go. The only thing they gave in advice was that there was a possibility of Sunday catching a fever, it was a normal thing to occur after someone had hypothermia so they told him to get plenty of rest once he got back to the express.
Keeping that in mind Welt, Himeko, and Sunday started making their way towards the entrance of the clinic.
“Are we sure I need this many layers of clothing…?” Sunday asked, feeling bashful about the amount of layers he was wearing that he could feel himself begin to sweat. Which he hated feeling, it made him feel gross and sticky already he had the need to wash himself.
“This is just to ensure your body temperature doesn’t drop again,” Welt chuckled lightly, placing a hand on Sunday shoulder, “Once we get back to the express you can get back to your regular attire but we just don’t wanna take any risks.”
Himeko nodded, “Besides, the temperature outside has dropped again since yesterday, so that’s even more reason for extra measures.” She smiled, patting Sunday's back, regrouping with the rest of their trope, “Are we all set to go?”
Everyone nodded in unison, “Then let’s get going, the quicker we get back to the express the more rest Sunday can get. Plus maybe Pom-Pom will lecture us all less.” She smiled as everyone groaned at the mention of an angry Pom-Pom waiting for them back at the express.
Soon enough they all headed out, Dan Heng and Welt keeping close to Sunday as the rest treaded on ahead, their feet crunching into the snow leaving several foot tracks behind them.
Along their way back they did have to pop into a store or two Sunday stating he was starting to feel chilly despite all the layers of clothing, further hinting maybe it is because of his Halovian genes. Nevertheless once he felt like he could bear the cold again they continued on their way until eventually getting back onto the express.
Sunday let out a sigh of relief as he began taking off his scarf, feeling the sweat starting to form on his forehead again.
“There you all are!” a squeaky voice called from the end of the Parlor Car, everyone turned their gaze to see a very angry Pom-Pom, they waddled their way over shaking their head, “I swear you three always managed to get into some sort of trouble! Now your influence has dragged our new member into your magnet of trouble too!”
“Conductor if I may–” Sunday tried to say to take some of the blame off of the trio - only to be given the same death glare.
“And YOU Mr. Sunday need to learn to take better care of yourself! If the others weren’t with you, who knows what would've happened!” They huffed, pointing a paw at Sunday, “You’ve made Pom-Pom really worry! So when your feeling better Mr. Sunday extra chore work for you! And the same goes for you three as well!”
March and Caelus groaned at the mention of having to double the chore work, Dan Heng simply nodded knowing it was best not to fight Pom-Pom about this, Sunday seemed…a bit surprised to hear that.
Most of his life whenever he got “punished” even as a young child it would be something harsh, whether it be no dinner, kneeling for hours confessing sins, and so much more…
So hearing he only had to double the chores, which he enjoyed doing in the first place, made him chuckle, “Of course conductor, I’ll try to feel better as soon as possible to ensure my part gets done.”
“Well don’t rush too fast, getting plenty of rest is equally important! Which you need to be doing, let's go!” Pom-Pom declared, taking a hold of Sunday's sleeve - they weren’t technically dragging Sunday considering the height difference between the two but with how clumsily Sunday was following suit it looked that way.
“Conductor this isn’t–” He stammered, his wings fluttering fluster by the scene,
“Hush! Don’t make Pom-Pom have to triple your chore duty!”
Everyone else watch the two leave the car, smiles and light laughter leaving them all from the scenery in front of them.
“Pom-Pom really doesn’t mess around with peoples health.” Caelus grinned leaning against a nearby wall.
Himeko hummed, “Well of course! It is a Conductor's job to ensure everyone on the express is in good health, While Pom-Pom seems angry all the time they have their own ways to show how much they care about everyone. Sunday is no exception.” She said, her honey eyes still gazing at the door Pom-Pom and Sunday disappeared behind before turning back to everyone, “Anyone up making some hot coco?”
“Yeah!”
—-------------------
A couple of days have passed since departing from Minda 21, and just like the doctors had said Sunday indeed did catch a fever. Himeko was the first to tell when one morning Sunday walked into the party car for breakfast and his face was incredibly flush, he barely looked like he could keep himself upright, and not to mention he sounded horrible too.
She helped him settle back into his room and thus led to the present, Sunday laying in his bed, a cold press place on his forehead, medicine on the nightstand, and some of March's stuffed animals around him - her words being for “emotional comfort”.
Every hour or so one or multiple of the crew members would come in, either to check in on him, keep him company, or so on and so forth. Frankly, Sunday didn’t really have the energy to go back and forth with them, that he would be ok, that he didn’t want to get them sick, and etc.
Plus he wouldn’t disagree that the company was nice even if he didn’t indulge in half the conversations.
At some point a series of soft knocks came from his door, “Sunday are you awake?” Welt called from behind the door.
A groan slipped out of Sunday mouth in response, as he rapidly blinked his eyes to try and keep away but was having some trouble. Most likely the medicine kicking into his system.
The door swished open, revealing Welt’s figure in the doorway holding a tray with a bowl of soup and some water, “Are you up to eating at all? You haven't had much today, or necessarily been able to keep it down much.” He said gently, walking over to the bed.
Sunday grimace at the reminder of the now clean large bowl that was situated next to his bed. The embarrassing memory of Dan Heng holding his hair and wings back as Caelus was quick on his feet to grab a trashcan before any of his contents splattered onto the ground.
“I-I can try…” Sunday replied, his voice raspy as he tried sitting up but ultimately failing that too, he felt so weak that even moving felt like a chore most of the time.
Luckily Welt was there to help him sit up, placing the tray into his lap, he looked down at the contents of the bowl, the smell of warm veggies, herms, and broth overwhelming his senses.
“It’s Pom-Poms ‘Feel Better Soon Soup’. They make it for everyone who’s feeling under the weather.” Welt informed, sitting on the edge of the bed, “Somehow it usually does help the person feel better.”
Picking up the spoon and twirling it around inside the bowl Sunday cast a curious glance at Welt, “What's in it?” He asked, collecting just a bit of everything onto the spoon.
Welt shrugged, “I don’t fully know, they said it was ‘top secret’ so they refuse to tell us.” He laughed lightly remembering all the times Himeko would ask, but Pom-Pom would always refuse but in that case maybe it's a good thing considering Himeko wasn't the best cook…“Rest assured there's nothing dangerous in it.”
Satisfied with that answer he took a bite, instantly the overwhelming savory flavors exploding in his mouth, “It's really good.” Sunday exclaimed, taking another scoop of the soup.
A light hearted chuckle left welt at Sunday's reaction to the soup, it didn’t surprise him finding out that their conductor was a pretty good cook, “I’m glad you like it, I’ll make sure Pom-Pom hears that you enjoyed it too.” he grinned as sunday took more collective small bites.
Eventually Sunday managed to get halfway down the bowl before pushing it away, not wanting to push his limits, “I think that's all I can manage for right now, sorry.” he said softly, tilting his head down silver hair covering his shameful face.
Sunday was the type of person who felt guilty if even one crumb was left on a plate, he didn’t like being a wasteful person no matter the amount of food on his platter so he always tried to eat everything. But taking another bite right now made him feel nauseous and he would rather not throw up in front of another person again.
A hand ruffled his locks softly, “Don’t worry about it, we can always heat it up later.” Welts voice was soft and reassuring as he took the bowl out of sundays lap, “You don’t have to force yourself, I know your stomach has also been bothering you so really it's ok.”
It felt like Welt could read Sunday's thoughts, while he didn’t rid all of the shame it subsided just a bit to have Sunday lift his head again to give a curt nod. He also realized that was a common thing with Welt, sometimes he didn’t have to say anything for the man to know how he was feeling, just seeing the small signs Sunday would show and then Welt would always give him the words he needed to hear.
It always left Sunday ache in some way, because not even his own “father” would do this for him. But yet, a man just mere months ago who was his enemy, that he nearly killed, but then gave him a second chance, was doing more than Gopherwood ever did since being adopted.
A sniffle left sunday as his wings covered his face, he forgot being sick made his emotions loosen a little from his control. It wasn’t new for Welt at this point to see him cry, the clinic being one of the many examples, but he always felt guilty letting others see him like this. He doesn’t want people to know that deep down sunday had a vulnerable side that would crept up at some point, because people would take advantage of it, people would use that side of him to get what they wanted, they would–
“Sunday?” Welt called out, seeing how Sunday's lower lip began to quiver as his shoulders began to shake.
There was no response at first, Sunday tried to calm himself before he spoke because if he were to speak he knew he would sob at the spot. Taking a couple breaths, to try and gain his composure, trembling wings still over his face finally he asked, “M-May I have a hug Mr. Yang?”
This caused Welt to pause for a moment, never having since being on the express, seeing these moments before, did sunday ask him for a hug. It was usually the other way around, so hearing sundays crackling voice in near tears ask such a question made welts heart break.
Steadily he wrapped his arms around Sunday's shaking form, pulling him close to his chest, resting his head on top of the silver hair - keeping in mind the halo, “Do you want to talk about it?” He asked gently, running his hand through Sunday's hair.
Below the younger man shook his head as he quietly sobbed into Welt's chest, not knowing how to express why his father never saw him good enough to give the basic needs. Sunday did everything for him, meld into the perfect being Gopherwood wanted him to be, and yet never did the man ever embrace him, not give him any words of encouragement, never took care of him when he was sick, nothing.
Was he always a failure in his fathers eyes no matter the sacrifices, the punishments, the lengths he went through?
“Ok, we don’t have to talk about it.” Welt's voice grounded Sunday before he could go deeper into those thoughts, “Just know we're all here for you Sunday, you're just as important to this crew as everyone else here. We will always make sure to look out for you as I know you will look after us if we ever need anything. I’m glad you're on this trailblazing journey with us.”
Sunday choked up, more tears flowing down his covered eyes as he tightly wrapped his arms around Welt’s waist. He didn’t consider himself a trailblazer still despite being on this train for little over a month, Sunday didn’t think he earned that title after everything he's done.
But hearing someone he now admired, seeked guidance from, and perhaps saw a little parental figure in, caused him to break.
“T-thank you.” He hiccuped in between sobs, that's all he knew how to respond, not finding the words right now.
They didn’t know how much time had passed being like this, at some point exhaustion had taken over Sunday and he fell asleep in Welts arms his sobs finally ridden.
Welt kept his hold on Sunday just a bit longer, smoothing out any stray locks, before eventually laying Sunday back onto the pillows pulling the covers to his chin.
Gathering the tray and bowl Welt walked quietly out of the room, sparing one more glance over to Sunday, “Goodnight kiddo.” Was all he said before leaving the room to let Sunday get some much needed rest.
The journey of the trailblazing can be a long or a short one depending on the person, for Sunday it was on the more lengthy side because there was still so much he had left to learn. While he probably wouldn’t admit it outloud, he was glad this journey wasn't a lonesome one and had people beside him that genuinely cared for him in ways he's only had with one other person.
Knowing that made the weight on his shoulders a little bearable to handle.
