Bloom Before the Fall

Summary:

For as long as she existed, the Bloom Devil had watched the world move without her. Empires rose and fell, forests swallowed ruins, and humans lived and died in the span of a breath. She was eternal, untouched by time—unchanging.

But eternity was lonely. And loneliness, she learned, was its own kind of death. So, she made a choice.

She abandoned the vastness of her existence, trading it for something smaller, something fragile. A body that could break. A life that could be lost. A chance to understand what it meant to live.

She was no longer a god watching from the distance. She was Aira, the Bloom Fiend. And for the first time, she found something—someone—to lose.

Exploring the dynamics within Quanxi's harem, from the perspective of the newest addition—a newborn fiend.

Chapter Text

There was no silence in the forest.

Even in the stillness, there was motion; roots weaving beneath the soil, leaves sighing in the wind, the slow stretch of petals unfolding to meet the sun. The world breathed in cycles, in rhythms older than language. Life rose, faded, then rose again.

She had been here longer than any of it.

She did not remember when she came into being. There was no moment of birth, no first breath, no awakening. She had always been. A presence. A force. A will woven into the marrow of the earth. A thousand years passed like the unfurling of a leaf, and still, she remained.

Where she stood, the land bloomed. Her presence alone called forth life—roots curling hungrily through fractured stone, thick stems strangling old ruins, forests rising in place of what once stood, collapsing and regrowing again and again. She watched the world shift in quiet inevitability, watched villages decay into soil, watched cities crumble under the weight of creeping green.

She saw humans, frail and fleeting, build their homes, carve their marks into the land, only for her roots to split the roads beneath them, their walls devoured by creeping ivy. She saw animals, big and small, scuttling through the wilderness, frantically attempting to survive in a world so vast it could swallow them whole.

None of them lasted. None of them mattered. At least, that was what she told herself.

She did not exist in the way mortal creatures did. She was not stone, but she never moved. She was not the wind, but she had been everywhere. She was not death, but things faded in her presence, breaking down into soil, into dust, into something new.

She did not know what it was to end.

She saw kings fall, wars rage, empires dissolve into nothing but dust. She watched bones rot into the roots of her forests, becoming but a minuscule fragment of herself. She watched the seasons turn, again and again and again.

The world changed. She did not.

But lately, something began to unsettle her. A strange, unfamiliar sensation crept beneath her bark, winding through her thoughts like an invasive root.

A hollow feeling. It was not hunger. Not pain. It was something deeper, something older. Something she did not have a word for.

She never touched another living thing. Not truly. Not without consequence.

Her flowers bloomed where she walked, but they were not gifts. They choked, they suffocated, they overwhelmed. A kiss from her roots would cradle a body in vines, but only to claim it. The life she brought was not mercy—it was consumption, leaving nothing in its wake.

She watched humans hold each other in grief, in love, in longing. She watched them laugh in the warmth of one another’s hands, tremble in the presence of something they feared, cry for those they had lost.

She did not understand them.

But she watched.

And for the first time in all of her existence, she envied.

Soon, she began to linger in places she never had before.

By the rivers where lovers met in secret.
Near the graves where humans wept over those they would never get back.
Around the ruins where children played, carving names into the stone of a world that would soon forget them.

She wondered what it felt like to leave something behind. To be more than just a presence that watched and waited for all things to return to her. She wondered if she, too, could be something else. Something small. Something fleeting. Something real.

But she could not. She was the Bloom Devil. She was eternal. And eternity did not change.

Except—

Except, perhaps, if she allowed it to.

One day, she found a body in a field of dying flowers.

She had not been searching for it—it was as if fate itself had presented it to her.

A human. A woman, curled among the petals, her breathing shallow, her skin streaked with blood and dirt. She was wilting, fading, like all things did.

She had seen many bodies before, had experienced their decay, their return to nothingness.

But somehow, this felt different. She felt that something in the woman was not ready to die. And something in the Bloom Devil was not ready to keep existing like this.

She knelt. She did not know why. She did not kneel for anything.

She watched the woman’s chest rise and fall, rise and fall. Such a fragile, fleeting motion. A single breath that would one day be the last. She reached out. She had never reached before. She touched—gently, reverently, watching as the woman’s labored breathing slowed, all color fading from her face.

She hesitated. For the first time, she was afraid.

If she did this, she would no longer be a devil. She would be something else. Something smaller, lesser, breakable.

Something weak.

But then the woman exhaled, one final sigh—her body going still, her warmth fading.

That was the moment she made her choice.

She took the body.

She died as the Bloom Devil.

And she woke as something new.

Notes:

Hi! Hope you enjoyed this introduction :)
Some things to keep in mind before you continue reading:
- Since we don’t yet know much about Quanxi and her fiends in Chainsaw Man, I’ll be taking some creative liberties with their personalities, relationships, and interactions. I keep up with the manga and will tweak certain details in future updates if needed.
- This story will include sexually suggestive content, but if you’re here purely for NSFW, you’ll likely be disappointed. While sexual intimacy is naturally part of the harem’s dynamic, I don’t plan to include explicit smut, as I simply don’t feel comfortable writing it. Instead, I plan to focus on implied, restrained, and more poetic depictions of intimacy, with an emphasis on the emotional rather than the technical.
- This work will include spoilers for the first part of the Chainsaw Man manga, especially the International Assassins Arc and Gun Devil Arc.

Now that we have that out of the way, see you (or not, up to you, lol) in future chapters! Bye! 💞
