Chapter Text
Sonic felt his anxiety start to rise as he stood before the entire village. His friends, those closest to him, stood right at the front, watching him closely. The crowd murmured amongst themselves, unsure of why their hero had called this impromptu meeting in the first place. Was Eggman stirring up trouble again? Was a new villain on the scene? Or was there some other emergency no one knew about? The questions buzzed around like an unrelenting swarm. But what was making their hero so uneasy? Why was he so worried?
Sonic’s heart pounded in his chest as he tried to collect his thoughts.
“Thank you all for coming today,” he began, his voice a little shakier than he’d like. He fidgeted, twisting his hands together in a nervous habit. “Uh... I have something to say, and... well, I hope it doesn’t change how you all see me. Or, um, how you treat me.”
Damn it, Sonic, why was this so hard? He’d prepared a whole speech, and now the words felt stuck in his throat.
He took a deep breath, his quills slightly twitching with anxiety. "I just–I wanted to say... that... I’m trans."
The words hung in the air for a moment, and then the crowd erupted into murmurs. There were surprised looks from his friends, eyes wide with shock, and children tugging at their parents, asking in confusion what that meant. The Mobian world wasn’t known for being open about gender transitions. It was rare enough for someone to transition in the first place, and even rarer for them to openly share it with others.
Mobians who did, usually waited until they reached a certain age—often when heat or rut cycles started—though even then, many preferred to keep it private. For others, the only reason they’d come out was when they felt like they had to because of being constantly misgendered, or perhaps when they felt they could trust someone deeply enough to confide in them. Sonic hadn’t done that—he hadn’t trusted anyone enough until now. He wasn’t even sure why he felt so compelled to do this in front of the entire town.
“I, uh... I just wanted to be upfront with all of you," Sonic continued, feeling his cheeks heat up despite the cool air. "I didn’t want to hide it anymore.”
The mayor stepped forward, his gaze kind, though clearly taken aback. “Thank you for trusting us with this information, Sonic,” he said, his voice gentle, though he clearly hadn’t expected this. “I take it you told your friends before you called this meeting, right?”
Sonic winced, his ears folding back in slight embarrassment. He scratched the back of his head, avoiding eye contact. “Umm... no? I figured I’d just rip the bandage off and do it all at once.”
The mayor smiled softly. “Understandable. And for what it’s worth, we’ll support you, no matter what.”
Sonic couldn’t help but feel a little relieved, but his anxiety didn’t quite let go.
“I’ll also have a list for you to fill out soon,” the mayor continued, "nothing too major, just some details about who you’d like to invite, and—”
“A party?” Sonic’s voice cracked slightly as he interrupted. The idea made his quills stand up in sudden surprise.
The mayor nodded, sensing Sonic’s growing nervousness. “Yes, a party. It’s rare for a Mobian to come out so bravely, or at all, about being trans, so when it does happen, we throw a little celebration. It’s our way of showing that we care and that we won’t treat anyone any differently, no matter their preferred gender. It’s about showing acceptance and support.”
Sonic blinked in surprise. He had no idea. “Ah, I didn’t know that…” he mumbled, still trying to process everything.
The mayor chuckled softly. “It makes sense, really. It’s been three years since Sticks transitioned—she was the last one before you.”
Sonic nodded, though his mind wandered for a brief moment. Sticks. The only other Mobian he knew who had gone through something similar. He had heard the stories, of course, but he never realized how much time had passed. Speaking of time… he couldn't help but think back to when he first arrived in the village. He didn’t even remember how it all started. One moment, he woke up in his shack, disoriented, with no memory of who he had been before. But there he was, surrounded by people who seemed happy to know him, even if he couldn’t recall anything about his past.
All he knew for sure was that Eggman had been attacking the village when he appeared. Everything after that was a blur. That was also the day he became their hero.
"Anyway..." Sonic cleared his throat, shaking off his thoughts. "I guess this means you all won't think I'm weird, right?"
The mayor smiled warmly, putting a reassuring hand on Sonic’s shoulder. “Not in the slightest. You’ve always been our hero, Sonic. And we’ll stand by you, no matter what. We’re all in this together.”
Sonic felt a small, grateful smile tug at his lips. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all. Maybe, just maybe, he could finally breathe a little easier.
And for the first time in a long while, the weight on his chest felt just a little bit lighter.
“Shadow!” Sonic caught up with his rival easily as they ran around Hedgehog Pass. “You were right! They were so nice and didn’t judge me at all!”
The black and red hybrid hummed, “no one gave you any trouble?”
“Mm-mm,” Sonic shook his head, “even the Lightning Bolt Society is using the right pronouns, I guess even they aren’t evil enough to misgender someone.”
Shadow was the first to know, Sonic didn’t even tell him. With his heightened sense of... well... senses, he knew since they first met and kept it quiet. Then again, he thought everyone knew and it was just normal now. Sonic found out Shadow knew after they got back from the Void; Sonic’s heat was slower to begin due to the depletion, and Shadow was the first out of the two to notice and warned him. Sonic had panicked so badly from that.
Sonic's heart still raced when he thought about that moment—the fear, the confusion. He never had the words for it before, but when Shadow had noticed, it was like a weight lifted off his chest. For the first time, he didn’t feel like a freak or someone who had to hide parts of himself. Sonic wasn’t sure what he would’ve done if Shadow hadn’t been there.
“I’m glad,” Shadow said simply, but there was a softness in his voice, a rarity for the usually stoic hedgehog. “It’s important to feel seen.”
Sonic nodded, looking ahead as they both kept running, the wind whipping through their fur. They passed the familiar landmarks of Hedgehog Pass—the rocky outcrops, the sharp curves, and the long stretches of forest that always seemed to go on forever. Sonic loved it here, the freedom, the rush of wind in his face. It was peaceful, almost.
"Yeah, it was a lot less scary than I thought it'd be," Sonic admitted, his tone a little sheepish. "I used to always think people would treat me differently, you know? Like I’d be some kinda freak or something."
"You’ve never been a freak," Shadow said firmly. “You’re you . And that’s all that matters.”
Sonic flashed a grin, his signature confident smirk, though there was a hint of vulnerability behind it. "Well, maybe I'm still getting used to all of this, but... It feels right. More than I thought it would. And hey, if even they can get it right, I guess there's hope for the world."
Shadow raised an eyebrow, glancing sideways at Sonic. "You sound almost optimistic."
Sonic laughed, the sound bright and carefree. "I think that’s a first, huh? But I’m not saying it’s all sunshine and rainbows. It’s just... I dunno. It’s nice to finally be me, even if it took a little longer to figure out."
Shadow didn't say anything for a moment, letting the words hang in the air between them, but then he gave a small nod. "I can’t say I understand everything you’re going through, but I’ve got your back, Sonic. Always."
Sonic’s smile softened, and for a brief moment, he let the comfort of Shadow's words settle in.
The party was in full swing, villagers were congregating Sonic left and right, but the cobalt hedgehog wasn’t paying too much attention to them. He was on the lookout for his rival. Really, Shadow was the only one who he actually wrote the name of on the list; he was the one to give Sonic the courage, so of course the cobalt wanted to share this party with him.
That’s when it started.
“Hey Sonic, how are you girly?”
“If you ever need help with make-up, lemme know!”
“Girl’s night out on Saturday?”
“We can do our nails! Just let me know when!”
Sonic thought it was innocent, until near the ending when the banner was released. Reading it, the hedgehog paled.
“Congrats on being Female!”
Panic ate at him, and suddenly everyone was cheering, calling him a “her,” so much misgendering happening at once, in one place, directed at him.
Sonic ran.
Sonic darted through the crowd, the laughter and cheers turning into a blur behind him. His heart raced, his mind spinning in confusion. What was supposed to be a celebration had suddenly turned into something entirely different, something he wasn’t ready for. The cheers, the teasing—it was all too much.
He didn’t even notice where his feet were taking him until he found himself on the edge of town, breathing heavily, trying to regain his composure. The crisp night air was cold against his fur, but it wasn’t enough to numb the wave of frustration that coursed through him.
Why would they do that? Why would they put something like that on a banner? He never asked for this.
A soft voice broke through his thoughts. “Sonic?”
He whipped around, recognizing the voice instantly.
There, standing in the moonlight, was Shadow.
His red eyes were filled with concern, and for once, Sonic felt a slight sense of relief. Shadow wasn’t smirking, wasn’t making some sarcastic comment. Instead, the Ultimate Lifeform just stood there, waiting.
“What the heck was that about?” Sonic asked, his voice sharp, almost frantic. “Why would they—why would they do that to me?”
Shadow took a step forward, his expression unreadable. “I don’t know, Sonic. But whatever it is, you don’t have to face it alone.”
Sonic clenched his fists, the feeling of being misunderstood gnawing at him. “I didn’t want this. I just wanted a good time. I don’t know how to fix this.”
Shadow’s gaze softened, and he stepped closer, offering a hand. “You don’t have to fix anything. Just… let’s figure it out together. If it’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that running away won’t make it go away.”
Sonic looked down at the offered hand, hesitating for a moment. Then, with a sigh, he took it.
“Alright, Shadow,” Sonic said, his voice quieter now. “Let’s do this.”
