For a heartbeat, he hesitated. Then, the carefully constructed armor he had wrapped himself in shattered, exposing the raw emotion beneath. “I look at him,” Charles said, his voice trembling under the weight of his confession, “and I see myself.”
His gaze swept from Crystal to Edwin, desperation etched into every feature. “That boy is terrified,” he continued. “I don’t even think he knows what he’s scared of. Before we came along, the only person he’d ever known was Esther fucking Finch!”
The venom in his voice turned to a bitter snarl. “Familiars aren’t born, they’re created. They’re molded to serve their masters—to act as extensions of their will. We all heard how she talked to him back there!”
Charles’ eyes softened, though the pain lurking behind them remained. “Are we really going to hold him accountable for something ingrained in him? Something she stitched into his very nature? He betrayed us, yes, but - What choice did he really have? What would she have done to him if he hadn’t?”
