The Best Medicine

Summary:

Talking to Jack has somehow made Samira forget how emotionally drained she was. Laughter truly is the best medicine.

This fic is inspired by the 1x15 scene of them in the park that was cut from the episode!

Work Text:

Samira watched Dr. Robby put his headphones in and begin his stroll home through the park.

He was leaving an empty space next to Abbot. She took the empty spot, still nursing her beer.

“You’re babysitting that thing.” Jack said teasingly.

“I know.” Samira felt like getting a buzz might make her even more exhausted than she already was

Suddenly he nudged her with his knee “You alright?”

“Yeah, this was just… a tough one.”

“More than tough, it was hell Dr. Mohan”, he smiled and sipped his beer.

“Yep Dr. Abbott we were in a special circle of it” Samira mirrored his sip.

They both smiled at each other and laughed. This was the first time Samira had smiled genuinely in hours. She had smiled when she was only slightly manic and running on adrenaline. She should probably look into that.

“Did you mean what you said during that procedure? That it was too risky for you to do?” Samira suddenly inquires.

Jack chuckles “No, Dr. Mohan I didn’t mean that.”

“Then what did you mean?”

“I meant to say that you’re a damn good doctor. I know we just went through hell but you rocked that shit… we all did.” He offers Samira a toast with his beer and she accepts it.

“Thanks Jack”
“Of course Samira.”

“ For the record, you’re a damn good doctor too.”

“Oohh you really want me to give you one of my go bags” jokes Jack

Samira gives a genuine laugh again. “I do, i do!”

Talking to Jack has somehow made Samira forget how emotionally drained she was. Laughter truly is the best medicine. Physically, she hopes her head touches her pillow before she falls asleep.

She tugs her bag over her shoulder and stands up, tossing her beer into the trash. “Bye guys ,”she waves at Mateo, Victoria and the others

She turns to look down at Jack still smiling and he is too.

“Oh you’re leaving me?” He says before sipping the last of his beer.

“Good night Jack.” She replies

“Good night Samira” he says with a nod.

As she walks away she replays their conversation in her head with a smile. She wonders if he’s watching her walk away. The thought stirs butterflies in her stomach for some odd reason. Butterflies over her attending? Maybe she really needs to touch grass and socialize outside of work.

Samira knew her next shift at the pitt would be much better and the thought of Jack possibly being there made her look forward to it even more.
