For Dratchrod Week 2025, filling with prompts: memories & touch the stars

Work Text:

“In Nyon,” Drift asked, lifting his hand toward the blanket of stars in the sky above them, “Could you see the stars?”

“Not really,” Rodimus replied. “Sometimes, the very brightest ones, but usually there was too much smog. Or too many skyscrapers, depending on where you were.”

“Rodion, too.” Drift sighed. “But when it was clear enough, there was this place we used to go and watch til the sun came up. We never had enough for a picnic, especially not like this, but we had each other and a view that no one could top.”

“Sounds great. I think I'm a little jealous.” Rodimus was grinning when Drift glanced over, taking any sting out of his words. “What about you, Ratch? What were the stars like in Iacon?”

“You couldn’t see the stars in Iacon.” Ratchet sighed softly. “Too much light pollution, which was probably part of the problem in Rodion, now that I think about it. I didn’t see my first stars until I left Cybertron on the Ark.”

“Kind of wild, huh?” Rodimus sat up and reached for Rratchet’s hand. “It’s not often that we got something you didn’t.”

“That’s true enough.” Ratchet took Rodimus’ hand and squeezed. “But I am glad that our pasts brought us here, now.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Yeah.” Ratchet looked down at Drift and smiled at him. “Even if there are parts that could have been better. We wouldn’t be here, with this fancy energon and these candies and all these stars, if we had been different people then.”

“I wouldn’t trade the circumstances that brought me to the two of you, either,” Drift agreed. “Even if some of it was terrible.”

“Really terrible,” Rodimus agreed. “And I might change a couple of things, but not the things that brought me to you. You and Ratch are the best things that ever happened to me.”

“Better than the Matrix?” Ratchet asked with a smirk.

“Better than the Matrix,” Rodimus replied. Then he leaned over and kissed Ratchet. And then leaned down to kiss Drift.

And then Drift sat up to kiss Ratchet, too, and they forgot about the stars for a while.
